He also co-founded a long-running nightly news program on WRFI Community Radio in Ithaca, New York. He is a graduate of Emory University. We discuss how changes are being made to Medicaid, by the imposition of a work requirement for recipients. Its should be noted that most recipients are elderly or disabled, and are living in nursing homes. This change does not increase the number of people who get jobs. Instead, the number people who are covered is reduced. No savings are evident, because of the additional administrative costs. Music: David RovicsWNHNFM.ORG production

The Buccaneers offense certainly took a step back this season, but was Byron Leftwich to blame? We know Todd Bowles wanted more of an emphasis on the run game. Leftwich's offense is a vertical offense, proficient at long shots down the field as we saw in 2020 and 2021. It was never a running offense. Was Bowles asking too much? The result, as we saw, was a neutered passing game and a running game that was worse than years past. Further, the team took a step back in other areas, including the defense and special teams. That was not on Leftwich. So, while we aren't devastated or surprised by Leftwich's firing, we don't think it will solve the Buccaneers' problems. The Buccaneers also fired Specialists coach Chris Boniol, WRs coach Kevin Garver, OQC Jeff Kastl, assistant DL coach Lori Locust and RBs coach Todd McNair. QBs coach Clyde Christensen, senior offensive assistant Rick Christophel and OLBs coach Bob Sanders have decided to retire. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/buccaneers-observer/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/buccaneers-observer/support

In episode five of Matt Waldman's RSP Scout Talk with Russ Lande, Russ and Matt dive deep into the evaluation and management of prospects with high-risk behavior off the field, discuss successful NFL players that taught us valuable insights about scouting, and reveal two more 2020 NFL prospects who have caught their eye. Tuesday night, I read George Atkinson III's open letter about how he turned his losses into lessons. It's a must-read about him and his brother's childhood with a paranoid schizophrenic mother and how that relationship forced them to come to terms with their emotional lives as adults. On Wednesday afternoon, Russ Lande and I discussed this letter as well as the way NFL teams approach players with at-risk behaviors during the pre-draft and post-draft phases of player acquisition. Hours later, we learned that Atkinson had died today—roughly one year after his younger brother committed suicide after they had difficulty grieving their mother's death. Details of Atkinson's death are not known at this time. We'd like to offer condolences to the Atkinson family at this time. Hopefully, our conversation underscores the difficulties that many young athletes face when transitioning from their backgrounds to mainstream society when they, in fact, have earned opportunities that even young adults prepared for life in mainstream society cannot be ready to handle seamlessly. Russ and I also talk about evaluation lessons we learned from players such as Drew Brees, Keenan Allen, Jamaal Charles, Anquan Boldin, Brett Favre, and Bob Sanders. We wrap up the show with a conversation about Georgia guard Solomon Kindley, Utah quarterback Tyler Huntley, Ohio State cornerback Jeff Okudah, and Minnesota corner Benjamin St. Juste. If you love the NFL Draft and player evaluation, you’ll find these conversations fascinating and enjoyable. You can follow Russ on Twitter @RussLande and read more of his content at www.russlande.com For the most in-depth analysis of offensive skill players available (QB, RB, WR, and TE), pre-order the 2020 Rookie Scouting Portfolio for a discounted price of $19.95 during the early-bird period of Thursday, December 5th through Friday, December 27th. If you’re a fantasy owner and interested in purchasing past publications for $9.95 each, the 2012-2019 RSPs also have a Post-Draft Add-on that's included at no additional charge. Best, yet, 10 percent of every sale is set aside until the RSP has reached its annual goal of donating $5,000 Darkness to Light to combat sexual abuse.
On this special episode, we go out west to hear from DU’s Manager of Conservation Programs for Montana, Bob Sanders. If this is about championships and the big Big Ten football things, then Iowa has to get right with Wisconsin. That’s been the theme this week. Three straight, six of the last seven, eight of the last 11. The Badgers have owned the Big Ten West. Iowa and Wisconsin aren’t all that different, but the results have been. That’s what makes this all the more maddening if you’re an Iowa person. Iowa has the defense leave Camp Randall Stadium with the bronze bull. Can it find enough offense? It doesn’t have to be a lot. It probably won’t be a lot. Whatever works. Sneaky big game for the fan base and maybe the future of Iowa football. This is a results-driven deal. You need to see some results against Wisconsin. The Badgers are your “money” rival. The Iowa State and Nebraska rivalries make noise and come with trophies. This comes with divisional supremacy and championship implications. I saw you guys at Indianapolis. You seemed to enjoy it. This is the game that can get you there. Or it’s another frustrating, three-hour headlock in Barry Land. How many of those do you have left in you? I’ve been around forever and that does have some benefits (besides AARP, you guys). In 2006, I wrote a story about then-Iowa secondary coach Phil Parker. You know, he was a three-time first-team all-Big Ten safety at Michigan State. Bob Sanders was a three-time first-team all-Big Ten safety for the Hawkeyes, for comparison. I talked to former Michigan State coach George Perles, Spartans head coach from 1983-94. “Phil was one of the toughest players we ever had,” Perles said. “He threw his body around like nobody I’ve ever seen. He was as tough as any defensive back we ever had, to the point where he’d hit people so hard he’d give himself a concussion.” Michigan State coaches wouldn’t let Parker go full bore in practice. He was eventually fitted with a Naval air force helmet to help him keep his eyes up and see what he was hitting. Phil sat down with Scott Dochterman and me for about 20 minutes Tuesday. We got to the Naval air force helmet story and a bunch of other stuff. As always, thanks to Phil for his time. Enjoy! Thanks to ELITE Sportsbook for the sponsorship!
Kirk Ferentz talks Bob Sanders, Pat Fitzgerald, Keith Duncan and More.
Former NFL Scout and CFL scouting director Russ Lande and RSP author Matt Waldman continue their twice-monthly scouting podcast. This week, they discuss acclimation time for young players, new lessons they're applying to scout talent, rookies they're monitoring closely, and 2020 prospects that have caught their eye. Doing this podcast with Russ Lande is a guilty pleasure because we're having the conversations I long to have with colleagues about player evaluation. Over the course of the hour, Russ and I cover some excellent topics as well as past, present, and future NFL players while sharing how we scout the game: Player acclimation time and how team views of Jared Goff's and Carson Wentz's readiness flipped after the draft. Why Brady Quinn wowed during pre-draft interviews. The imperfect craft of interviews and determining character and leadership, including stories about former Colts standout safety Bob Sanders, Bills runner Frank Gore, and Ravens cornerback Jimmy Smith. Skills we've recently learned that are helping us get better as scouts. Independent hand usage of offensive linemen. Wide receiver release techniques and break techniques based on specific defender positions. Rookies we're monitoring based on our evaluations. Drew Lock Miles Sanders Devin Singletary Noah Fant 2020 NFL Draft prospects who've caught our eye. Indiana offensive lineman Coy Cronk. Ole Miss runner Scottie Phillips. North Carolina tight end Carl Tucker. Minnesota wide receiver Tyler Johnson If you love the NFL Draft and player evaluation, you'll find these conversations fascinating and enjoyable. You’re going to have to listen to the entire deal to get to the good part. How’s that for a tease? Kidding. We found out late in the #oniowapod that Bob Sanders is the honorary captain for the Hawkeyes this week. Scott immediately switched his prediction to 100-0 Hawkeyes. I was already throwing Iowa and the points. I think the Bob as honorary captain is kind of overkill this week. Yes, Purdue has been tricky. If Iowa drops this one, it’s the worst one. I don’t think it comes to that. Elitesportsbook.com has the Hawkeyes at 17.5-point faves. Do that. This did lead to a discussion on best Hawkeyes of the Ferentz era. Bob is the one. He was the program’s Keanu Reeves before Keanu Reeves was America’s Keanu Reeves. We talked a lot about line play, running backs, stuff the defense needs to tighten up. We talked a little about “tough questions,” but not really. Sometimes, stuff gets so tiresome it’s not worth bringing up. Creates some sort of misery warp that we don’t really care to deal with anymore. We dug into the mailbag and took this to almost 2 ½ hours. Everyone got their money’s worth, I think. Thanks to ELITE Sportsbook for the sponsorship. Thanks to you listeners for the participation and the camaraderie. You’re keeping your sense of humor and you do make us laugh every week. Enjoy the game.

Big Ten media days have value. Absolutely, they do. It’d have more value if the league edited its invite list. Last week was too much. This event has gone from two-hour sitdowns at a table with players and coaches scheduled for different times. So, when Kirk Ferentz was talking, Bob Sanders was waiting to talk. You could swing from one Iowa convo to another without missing anything. It’s not like that anymore. There is podium time with players and coaches. They are generally around the same time. There’s overlap within the programs. It’s just hard to get anything meaningful. There are a million media types now. So, you have the craggy old media smashing into fan media that wants to know how cool it is to be a [fill in the blank]. You can decide what you value. One of the coolest media day “stories” in the last few years was an Eleven Warriors (an Ohio State website) writer going around and asking a player from each Big Ten team to draw his team’s logo. Yeah, that’s not going to make 60 Minutes, but it probably entertained a good amount of people. And that’s how you have to look at this event. It’s a lark, it’s not PBS NewsHour. I like information. That’s what I value in these types of things. I’m not calling for change. If there is one thing old media better know by now, it’s that 1) no one cares about your problems and 2) you are part of a faceless constellation of “media members.” You can spend 20 years grinding, but the guy from TurtlesComintoGetYa.com is in line with you. Maybe this is a complaint. Either way, the podcast was a helluva lot more fun. Enjoy.
Apollos Defensive Coordinator Bob Sanders joins the show and he talks about how players have adjusted after having their first practice, how Steve Spurrier is as a leader, gives us some of his recruiting knowledge.
