Michael Knox, the visionary producer behind Jason Aldean's groundbreaking sound, pulls back the curtain on one of country music's most remarkable success stories. Knox's candid revelations about their journey expose the harsh realities of Nashville's music business—an incredible 40 showcase rejections, multiple lost record deals, and years of struggle before breakthrough success. What makes this conversation extraordinary is hearing how Knox deliberately architected Aldean's revolutionary sound when mainstream Nashville wasn't ready for it. "The whole plan with Jason was to be Tim McGraw's nightmare, to be the replacement of that generation," Knox explains. "You can't do that if you don't cover all the bases—I can tear your head off, steal your girl, make you cry."Knox shares fascinating production stories, including how executives at Broken Bow Records first heard "Hicktown" with a broken speaker that eliminated the electric guitar parts—yet still loved it. He reveals the battles fought for now-iconic songs like "She's Country," "Big Green Tractor," and "Dirt Road Anthem"—all initially dismissed as career-ending risks by industry gatekeepers. The conversation takes a personal turn when Knox discusses his father, Buddy Knox, who had the first self-written #1 hit in rock and roll history ("Party Doll") yet remains excluded from the Rock Hall of Fame. This family connection illuminates Knox's deep understanding of the music business's often unfair nature and his determination to help Aldean succeed against overwhelming odds. What emerges is a masterclass in artistic vision and perseverance. In today's era of overnight TikTok sensations, Knox questions whether artists who haven't weathered rejection and struggle can develop the character needed for lasting careers. "These people today don't suffer like that," he reflects, celebrating the hard-earned journey that shaped Aldean's authentic connection with fans. The Try That in a Small Town Podcast is powered by e|spaces! With a remarkable track record playing across the United States, as well as being a multi-instrumentalist in numerous genres, it is clear he has a unique perspective when it comes to creating music. Hailing from Parsons, Tennessee, his interest in various instruments started at a young age when he began reading music in kindergarten while also gaining experience in the family band at church. By the late 90s, Scotty began expanding on his knowledge of music genres and branching out to multiple styles such as percussion and classical guitar performance before earning his spot as the band leader of the official NASCAR Rolling Thunder band for an entire season. His accomplishments continued when around the early 2000s, he won fourth place in the world during the International Blues Contest while representing Memphis, Tennessee.         Shortly after, Scotty collaborated with a new original group and recording artist, Ash Bowers, along with Jason Aldean's label, Broken Bow Records, as well as the sister label, Stoney Creek Records. It wasn't long until Scotty decided to start his own original project, an indie rock band called Trash the Brand. He had wanted to record and play songs that he had written but never had the chance to play. Within weeks of forming, he was playing to packed houses and venues which in turn caught the attention of a few people in the music industry. Soon Scotty found himself in contact with Jeff Hanson (manager of Creed and Saving Abel), who offered to manage him. While negotiating, he asked Hanson to put him on the show with Saving Abel that was happening that weekend in Memphis. He was given the opening spot for the concert. A few days after the show, Scotty was asked to front Saving Abel in which he accepted and has since been with for over 8 years.          Scotty Austin has used his natural talent and ear for distinct sounds to produce expressive song lyrics and music throughout his chttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and brought to you as always by The Barn Media Group. On this episode of Roger the Wild Child Show, we are joined by former Nashville recording Artist, Chad Brock, and singer/songwriter Tom Yankton!CHAD BROCK In high school, Brock played football & was offered a post-secondary scholarship to play sports. He turned down the scholarship, however, as his experiences in the school choir had convinced him to pursue a singing career. Brock moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to follow this dream, but he met with little success at first. In 1994, he signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records, but he did not release any music for over three years.Warner Brothers and WCW got together to cross-promote Brock, and he trained at World Championship Wrestling's training facility, the WCW Power Plant. Chad wrestled for WCW from 1994 -1996, until an injury forced him to retire. He also appeared at several WCW events in 1999, where he was briefly involved in an angle with Curt Hennig. In 1998, Brock released his debut single, "Evangeline", which peaked at number 51 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks (now Hot Country Songs) charts. That song's follow-up, the ballad "Ordinary Life", went on to become Brock's first major hit,[1] peaking at number 3 on the same chart, as well as number 39 on the Billboard Hot 100. Following that song's success, Brock released his self-titled debut album. Its third and final single, "Lightning Does The Work", reached number 19 in 1999.Brock's fourth chart single was a rewrite of Hank Williams, Jr.'s signature song "A Country Boy Can Survive", a number 2 hit for Williams in 1981. Chad's version, which featured Williams and George Jones, was entitled "A Country Boy Can Survive (Y2K Version)", was re-written with lyrics pertaining to the Year 2000 problem (abbreviated Y2K). The song served as the first single from Brock's 2000 album Yes!. Its second single was the title track, which went on to become Brock's only number-one Billboard hit,[1] as well as a number 22 hit on the Hot 100 chart. The third and last single from Yes! ("The Visit") peaked at number 21.2001 saw the release of Brock's 3rd and final album for Warner Bros.. Entitled III, it was less successful than its predecessor. III had only one chart entry in "Tell Me How", which failed to make the Top 40. This album also reprised Brock's three highest-charting singles ("Yes!", "Ordinary Life" and "Lightning Does The Work"). Shortly thereafter, he signed to Broken Bow Records, then a newly formed independent label. Although he released five singles for Broken Bow, four of which made the charts, he never put out a full album.TOM YANKTONTom Yankton's rowdy, high-energy, multi-million streaming, wildly-talented brand of award-winning, party crowd entertainment wouldn't be complete without, 1.) It sounded like the dirt I grew up from. That moment musically changed my life.” ~ Brent Rupard of Everette Like the great American bands that came before them – new Broken Bow Records duo Everette doesn’t follow trends. Instead, the guys of Everette write what they live, weaving gritty tales of struggle and heartbreak alongside fun-loving stories of escapism and mischief. Often their songs are written while touring – sometimes during sleepless nights as an odometer tracks the miles or on a day off in a dingy motel room off the beaten path – but always organically and always from the heart. Hailing from humble beginnings, Brent Rupard and Anthony Olympia unknowingly went to high school a mere eight miles apart in rural Bullitt County, Kentucky. Brent spent much of his youth on his family’s horse farm and even dabbled in barrel racing. Anthony’s grandpa was a hall of fame quarter horse trainer and, although their families were friends, the two musicians wouldn’t meet until the age of 21 when Brent took a guitar lesson from the classically-trained Anthony. Their friendship and musical chemistry were immediate and the pair soon moved to Bowling Green, KY, where the duo cut its teeth playing originals and covers four nights each week while finishing their degrees at Western Kentucky University. It was the burgeoning Bowling Green music scene that Brent and Anthony credit for shaping them into the songwriters and artists they are today, particularly at a venue called WHA bah. “Once we started playing music at WHA bah the crowd wasn’t just college kids anymore – it was people of all ages and all walks of life. They taught us how to have a good time and not worry about proving ourselves to anyone. They taught us to be true to ourselves,” says Anthony. The two friends moved to Nashville after graduation to “chase the dream” together. Brent started a solo career. Anthony began working as a musician for hire to pay the bills while still playing in Brent’s band. Throughout this time the roommates continued to write and record demos together until the day the two collaborators decided to form the duo Everette during a writing session – and an American band was born. Named for George Clooney’s character in “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” the duo of Everette is a bonafide triple threat. Brent and Anthony co-write almost all of their songs as well as play many of the instruments on Everette’s studio recordings. The two young artists are also co-producing their debut project, an experience Brent calls “spiritual” and one that is critical to the authenticity of Everette’s brand of Country music. “We have a certain type of rhythm and we get into a symbiotic zone together in the studio that makes the song work,” explains Anthony. “We have mutual respect for each other’s talent and each other’s feedback when we disagree. Trying to redo a song in someone else’s studio – it just isn’t the same.” Everette’s brand of country music is filled with swampy harmonicas and bluesy guitar licks mixed with a knack for melodic hooks not unfamiliar to fans of the 80s and 90s. Citing diverse influences ranging from Tom Petty, The Eagles and Randy Travis to Ray Charles, Michael Jackson and John Mayer, Everette’s honest and relatable music exudes a crossover appeal that would have fans singing along at Bonnaroo as well as at CMA Music Fest. Everette’s “Slow Roll” is a rollicking, carefree number inviting the listener to escape from the trappings of city life into an afternoon of leisurely possibility. With a dance-friendly beat and an infectious chorus, “Slow Roll” showcases the duo’s clever songwriting abilities, including a nod to pop culture classic “Dazed and Confused.” Hips will immediately begin swaying to Everette’s intoxicating “Mugshots.” At once dangerous and fun-loving, the duo utilized a steel resonator to add a “Tarantino soundtrack vibe” to the song. That unique element, paired with the song’s arena rock chorus, is sure to make “Mugshots” the universal anthem of wild summer nights. The duo switches gears with the dark and gritty “Relapse” which showcases an intensity and depth to the young artists’ songwriting abilities. Everette credits the “magic” of the heart-wrenching lament to writing it while on the road without time limitations or constraints. Everette often describes its brand as “bonfire music” because of its communal nature, which relates directly to the Country music genre. “It’s the same thing we love about Country music and Country radio,” says Brent. “Just like everyone’s involved at a bonfire jam,” says Anthony. “When we’re on stage we don’t want any separation between us and the audience. We want our shows to be an experience. We write songs about us, but they’re really about everyone.”

Often their songs are written while touring – sometimes during sleepless nights as an odometer tracks the miles or on a day off in a dingy motel room off the beaten path – but always organically and always from the heart.Show Links:https://www.patreon.com/GaininFastOnMemphishttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/gainin-fast-on-memphis/id1489564658https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCU89KmbrYpUIiIVae2qHuMg?view_as=subscriberhttps://www.facebook.com/GAININFASTONMEMPHIS Guest Links:https://www.facebook.com/WeAreEverette/https://www.everette-music.com/https://www.bbrmusicgroup.com/artist/everette/https://www.instagram.com/everetteofficial/https://twitter.com/everettethebandhttps://www.youtube.com/everettehttps://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/everette/79996415Sponsor Links:https://www.arlorevolution.com/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCxvVcUtdBCgLMUdip7P3Hghttps://www.facebook.com/arlorevolution/Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/GaininFastOnMemphis)

The show will begin with a holiday song from country music icon Martina McBride who has sold over 14 million albums and has released a new holiday album called “It's The Holiday Season” from Broken Bow Records. She will then join us on air to talk about her new cookbook “Martina's Kitchen Mix: My Recipe Playlist for Real Life” from Oxmoor House Books Time Inc. Books. With such a wide selection, visitors will be sure to find the perfect gift for their loved ones and themselves, like fashionable jewelry and clothes, unique decoration items and so much more.
