Live From Sundance: Telling Better Queer and Trans Stories

At Liberty

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 25, 2024 40:47

This week, At Liberty is coming to you live from the 2024 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, hosting a discussion with queer and transgender storytellers. The conversation delves into the challenges they face while navigating an onslaught of bills targeting trans people nationwide and censoring their narratives. This dialogue follows a recent decision by the Utah state House to advance HB 257, a bill that would criminalize trans people for using the bathroom—a stark example of the many threats against the trans community that have surged in recent years. Nationwide, 22 states have banned gender-affirming care for trans minors, and over 300 new anti-LGBTQ bills have been introduced in 2024. We're fighting back in the legislatures and the courts, but this is also a fight in the public discourse, one that demands us to fight back in cultural organizing. We must own our narratives and tell our stories because the queer and trans community will not be invisible. In this episode, we're joined by Lío Mehiel, an actor, filmmaker, and multidisciplinary artist known for starring in the films “Mutt” and “In the Summers,” both of which premiered at Sundance. We're also joined by Jules Rosskam, a filmmaker, artist, and educator who has directed several films including “Transparent,” “Against a Trans Narrative,” and the recent Sundance premiere “Desire Lines." Last, but certainly not least, we have Gillian Branstetter, our very own communications strategist for the ACLU's LGBT and HIV project. Together, we spoke about the efforts threatening queer and trans storytelling, and how we persist in spite of them. If you want to join us and the ACLU of Utah in fighting back against HB 257, sign this petition: https://secure.everyaction.com/Ql111CGWmUiOqyG_qjNrWw2

It is a nights-and-weekends project that Reid started, and only exists because of the many opportunities given to him by mentors on his journey, and the support of his wife and young daughter. Reid is a first-generation winemaker who found his calling to wine through a fascination with the natural world and has been lucky enough to work with some of the most passionate and generous people in the industry, near and far. Tidings is focused on crafting Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah that reflect the distinct ecology of where they are grown, to honor the history and character of the land, and the people who steward it. Also since then Reid has been named the winemaker for one of the most historic estates in Napa Valley Stone Hill Vineyards. [EP301] www.tidingswine.com https://daily.sevenfifty.com/understanding-microbial-terroir-in-wine/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33927711/

Sarah Ichioka is an urbanist, strategist, curator, and writer currently based in Singapore. She leads Desire Lines, a strategic consultancy. Her latest book, Flourish: Design Paradigms for Our Planetary Emergency, co-authored with Michael Pawlyn, proposes a bold set of regenerative design principles for addressing environmental and social challenges. We talked to her about the book and related podcast, her wide-ranging career, and her abiding interest in cities, which was first piqued in her eighth grade year through the Future City competition. She and Pawlyn started working on the book when they perceived tension between  evolution in the built environment community and growing awareness that such progress was not nearly sufficient for the necessary transformation. They sought to tangibly and meaningfully integrate perspectives from outside the built environment, such as Kate Raworth on (doughnut) economics.  “We wanted to craft clear examples of the mindset shifts -- we identify five as new or rediscovered -- to move away from degenerative thinking,” Sarah says. ”We wanted to be direct about the need for a cultural shift, not just technological- or innovation-based change.” She says the book is the beginning of the conversation, which now includes collecting stories of regenerative practice. “The scale of the challenge can feel overwhelming. We need relationships where we can be ourselves and be honest … and then channel them constructively.”

ReGeneration RisingIn this special series, we explore how regenerative practice is helping people in place collectively re-design their communities, cities and economies and create a thriving home for all on our planet. In this third episode, Josie and Daniel discuss regenerative cities with urban designers, Michael Pawlyn and Sarah Ichioka, authors of the book Flourish: Design Paradigms for our Planetary Emergency.  From our cities, to our homes, to our public buildings, the spaces we inhabit determine how we live our lives and interact with the world around us. But what if our built environment is actually fueling our destructive lifestyles and furthering our disconnection with the living world? How can regenerative principles help us design buildings and communities that put life – all life – at the centre, and respond to our needs in the 21st century.  It's precisely these challenges that urban designers, Michael Pawlyn and Sarah Ichioka address in their new book, Flourish: Design Paradigms for our Planetary Emergency.  Sarah Ichioka is an urbanist, curator and writer based in Singapore. She currently leads Desire Lines, a strategic consultancy for environmental, cultural, and social-impact organizations and initiatives. Cities in Mind

Hello everyone! Our podcast series is back this week with an exciting episode about the power of regenerative design and what it means for cities across Asia.Wait, what is regenerative design? For more than three decades, architects, planners, designers and others shaping the built environment have been following and promoting sustainable design. In 1987, the United Nations' Brundtland Commission defined sustainability as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”Sustainability was introduced with good intentions and there has been important progress in terms of energy-efficient buildings, use of materials and resources, change management and general awareness. But overall, the sustainable design movement has fallen short of the progress needed to prevent substantial environmental damage and climate change. The concept has been so widely misused that it has lost its original meaning. As architect and circular economy advocate William McDonough observed, if we get to complete sustainability, we simply get to the point of being “100% less bad”.Our current trajectory in construction, energy use and resource consumption guarantees we will exceed 1.5°C global warming. Across the world, natural habitats continue to be destroyed at an alarming rate. There is a need for a paradigm shift and the language and terms we use strongly influence the way we tackle our problems. So enters regenerative design. The quest for sustainability has moved society forward in important ways, but we believe it is now time to embrace a new regenerative approach to design and development. As a globalized society, we urgently need to reach the turning point in human civilization where everything we do has a net positive impact on the environment. We contend that this is a transformation that is within our reach. It is time to shift from merely mitigating negatives to optimizing positives. We need to embrace approaches that restore ecosystems, reunite divided communities, and reciprocally enhance the interdependent health of people, place and planet – schemes that, in myriad ways, restore what we have lost and deliver compounding net benefits – actualizing regenerative potentials that are beyond the limits of what ‘sustainability' can imagine.Sarah Ichioka, Michael Pawlyn, Flourish: Design Paradigms for Our Planetary EmergencyI hope I got you interested in this approach because that's precisely what we will discuss in today's episode with Sarah Ichioka.Sarah is a strategist, urbanist, curator and writer. She is the Founding Director of Desire Lines, a Singapore-based consultancy for environmental, cultural, and social-impact organizations and initiatives. In previous roles, she has explored the intersections of cities, society and ecology within leading international institutions of culture, policy and research, including Singapore's National Parks Board, La Biennale di Venezia, LSE Cities, NYC's Department of Housing Preservation & Development, as Director of The Architecture Foundation (UK) and Co-Director of the London Festival of Architecture. Her new book Flourish: Design Paradigms for Our Planetary Emergency (2021) is co-authored with London-based architect Michael Pawlyn. It's a wonderful (and engaging) read which unpacks the possibilities offered by regenerative design.

Clio Van Aerde and Alisa Oleva were our guests on the Breakfast Show this morning to talk about it. Clio is a Luxembourgish Artist with a background in set design. Alisa is a Russian, Londo n-based artist who was invited to take part in a residency here in Luxembourg as part of Esch 2022. Both artists are interested in how space affects the body and influences movement. On Sunday, participants in the walkshop will be guided by Alisa to listen, walk, observe, notice, and share. There will also be a soundwalk on which walkers will be taught deep listening techniques. Desire Lines is a research and performance project that investigates the choices we make with our feet. The artists explore how landscape and architecture, and the pathways between, all nurture our imaginations and help us define ourselves in an ever-changing world. Over the course of the coming months, the project will include workshops, regular walks and encounters with local communities, the development of different audiowalks and a participatory site-specific performance in Lasauvage in July 2022. to sign up for the walkshop this sunday email: contact@ampersandvariations.com For more information about Alisa go to www.olevaalisa.com

The focus on sustainable design has led to a great deal of positive change in our shared built environment, but for two visionary systems change thinkers, it's now time to embrace a radical, regenerative design approach for a truly flourishing future.  Michael Pawlyn, founder of the innovative biomimicry architecture firm Exploration, has joined forces with Sarah Ichioka, urbanist and leader of multi-disciplinary strategic consultancy firm Desire Lines, on a new book which maps out key design paradigms in a time of planetary emergency. They argue that as a globalized society, we urgently need to reach the turning point in human civilization where everything we do not only doesn't cause harm, but actually has a net positive impact on the environment. By embracing approaches that restore ecosystems, reunite divided communities, and reciprocally enhance the interdependent health of people, place and planet, their approach to the built environment may be just what the planet needs.  #RSAflourish Become an RSA Events sponsor: https://utm.guru/udI9xDonate to The RSA: https://utm.guru/udNNBFollow RSA Events on Instagram: https://instagram.com/rsa_events/Follow the RSA on Twitter: https://twitter.com/RSAEventsLike RSA Events on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/rsaeventsofficialListen to RSA Events podcasts: https://bit.ly/35EyQYU

Anna's pronouns are she/her. She experiences herself as genderqueer and feels herself to be gender-responsive. Find out what that means to Anna in this episode. We also talk about the energetic space between people, being responsive vs being reactive, how boxes can be constricting as well as expansive, playing with gender and sexuality, reclaiming the word 'dyke', self-healing through sexual experiences, liberating ourselves and writing our own story, pursuing desire, and why it's more than ok to want more out of life. Barry Herbst from Bottle Barn is also in the studio today. Here is the website of the Petaluma Gap Winegrowers Alliance. The first wine of the show this week is a 2011 Sauvignon Blanc from Quivira Wine in Dry Creek Valley, from Dan Berger's person cellar. It is spectacular. 2011 was a cold year and the wine has had perfect storage in Dan's cellar. Lemongrass, a trace of olive and under-ripe kiwi. “This wine's got everything going for it,” says Dan. Panorama of Petaluma Gap In Dan Berger's opinion, the Petaluma Gap is destined to produce great Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The Chardonnays that he is seeing is already displaying aromatics that are identifiable. The Petaluma Gap AVA is three years old. The wind is what defines it. The mountains run east-west and the wind comes in from the ocean and extends the growing season, so the fruit is hanging longer but it maintains acidity because of the early morning fog that comes in. The Chardonnays tend to be difficult to make in large quantities. They taste a 2018 Chardonnay from Gust wines. Gust was born in 2017. Megan and his sister are part of the second generation of Cline Family Cellars, which is known for big reds like Zinfandel but they were also always drawn to the cooler climate wines. She is lucky because her father planted in Petaluma Gap in the mid-1990s. It is all organically farmed. They saw the potential to focus on the best blocks and the best rows in the vineyards, to really show off the Petaluma Gap. Tom Gendall is their winemaker. Dan likes that this Chardonnay is subtle and not ostentatious. It has creamy richness but it is understated. This Chardonnay comes from two of their vineyards, Catapult and Diamond Pile, two sites that are one closer to the coast and one more inland. The winds swirl here, which means that the wind hits both sides of the leaves, which in turn imparts more of this AVA's wind driven character. Cody Rasmussen explains that Desire Lines makes wine from different vineyards. Griffin's Lair in Petaluma Gap was one of the first vineyards they worked with. Cody explains the way the vines react to the wind. They will stop transpiration, they stop photosynthetic ripening in response to the wind, which slows things down, keeps the acid and gives you small canopies and small berries. Cline has been around since 1982, they moved to Sonoma in 1989. Megan has been working with her family winery for 6 years. They grow a little Sangiovese for Jacuzzi family vineyard, a little Pinot Gris and some Viognier. They love their Rhone varieties. They also make olive oil. Gust Wines and Desire Lines wines are both available at Bottle Barn, as well as the Cline wines, of course. Bottle Barn is open again for in-store shopping, from 10am-6pm. Bottle Barn can ship wine to most states. In the mid-1990s, the Petaluma Gap was considered too cold for vines, but Fred Cline had had success in the colder Carneros area, and so he planted several varieties in Petaluma Gap. Gust Wines does not have a tasting room yet, but one is in the works. She suggests people follow Petaluma Gap on Instagram, for news and promotional events. They taste a 2018 Gust Wines Syrah, which Dan Berger says is almost feral, or wild, in a very positive way. Megan tastes wild herbs. Dan compares it to walking in a forest after rainfall. These Syrah grapes are some of the last grapes that they pick. It takes more time to ripen. Dan says that the winemaker has to be extremely careful that it does not get too much or too little air. Are you still a liar? From its first icy scenes in the Arctic Circle, Felicity Volk’s new novel tells an epic story of a compulsive, unconventional love that spans decades and crosses continents. Desire Lines sets its exploration of truth and lies against society’s uneasy relationship with its own truth-telling in history, war and politics. Canberra’s coming of age, the construction of its institutional landmarks and milestones in Indigenous relations are the backdrop for the novel’s moving reminder that even truths that seem lost forever can find their way home. Join award-winning author Felicity Volk and Karen Viggers for the launch of Volk’s latest novel, Desire Lines.

If you've ever been on a college campus or a public park, you may have seen desire lines. Those are those well-worn paths carved by travelers who, for whatever reason, preferred a route that diverged from the ones carefully cured in concrete by city or campus planners.

The calendar has ticked over to December which means that Christmas mustn't be too far away. Of course, there have been hints and indicators of this in our shopping malls and pop-up ads for months, but once the calendar reads “December” we know it's finally, really close at hand. As we enter the period of time known as “Advent” it's worth reflecting on how we can prepare for Christmas as followers of Jesus. This week we begin a new series entitled “Ring the Bells” in which we will seek to answer the questions, “What is Christmas really about?” and “What difference does that meaning make?"

Narrator Nicholas Boulton’s rich baritone amplifies the drama and intrigue in this intense medieval romance. Gryff is a Welsh prince in hiding who is captured by violent thieves and kept alive simply because he knows how to care for his valuable hunting falcons. A small, nearly silent, and deadly woman slays his captors, and the pair form an alliance as they travel together. Boulton’s talents are impressive as he smoothly transitions between the many characters and their Norman and Welsh accents. He skillfully highlights the growing trust and passion between Gryff and Nan, his enigmatic savior. Listeners just discovering this detailed historical romance series will be delighted to hear that Boulton also narrated the two earlier and equally compelling titles.
