Jack Schafer (@jackschafer) is a retired FBI special agent, current assistant professor at Western Illinois University, and co-author of The Like Switch: An Ex-FBI Agent's Guide to Influencing, Attracting, and Winning People Over. [This is part two of a two-part episode. Catch up with part one here!] What We Discuss with Jack Schafer: How undercover cops get made just by the way they look at people. The spotlight effect: why we all overestimate how much other people notice about us, and how we can use this to our advantage when trying to spot a lie (or not get caught in a lie ourselves). What Jack has to gain by making minor mistakes deliberately when he's teaching a class. What people are really telling us when they're angry, and how we can stealthily defuse them before they go off. If you make people feel good about themselves, they will seek to be around you to get those feelings again. And much more... How to "name it and claim it" when manipulative techniques are being used against you to withstand and resist their effects. How to recognize friend and foe signals in others and make sure you're not inadvertently broadcasting the signals that mark you as an easy target for manipulation. What's really going on when someone grabs food from your plate without asking, or takes their sweet time getting out of the parking spot you're clearly waiting for. And much more... This has been a very interesting subject for me for a long time now and I got to interview Jack Schafer for our podcast, who worked on these techniques as an FBI agent for 20 years before writing the book The Like Switch.

Our guest is former FBI Special Agent, author, and professor – Dr. Jack Schafer. In the past, Dr. Schafer has developed spy recruitment techniques, interviewed terrorists, and trained agents in the art of interrogation and persuasion. Today, he shares strategies, techniques, and tools you can employ to get people to like you for a minute or a lifetime.CHEAT SHEETWhat is the friendship formula and how does it increase other people's ability to like you? What are three “friend signals” you can practice to project likeability? What signals can you look for to know whether or not good rapport has been established? What is a “curiosity hook,” and how can you use it to attract others with common interests? If the golden rule of friendship is to make people feel good about themselves, how do you go about doing that? How do you use empathic statements to listen more, talk less, and still gain interest in the conversation? Why learning the C.A.R.E acronym is important to ensure you are maintaining focus on others – and not yourself. This episode is full of tools for becoming a more likable person, and it's important to remember the words of Dr. Schafer when applying them in our daily lives:“No one tool works for all circumstances, but for all circumstances, there is a tool that works. And it's the time and circumstance that determine what tool to use.”Talkspace has over 2,000 licensed therapists who are experienced in addressing life challenges we all face.
