On a cruise ship of "old people," some amazing Canadian musicians (including Nova Scotia vilionist Hayley Ryerson) performed some raucous Celtic tunes from Cape Breton Island. I'm now hooked! Count me in. Don White, A new fan from Oregon " Wolbert van Wageningen emailed: "Hi Marc, My name is Wolbert van Wageningen. I live in the North of the Netherlands. Several years ago I started listening to your Irish and Celtic Music Podcast. I liked it a lot because of all the independent music. But sometimes it was a bit too independent according to my taste. I forgot to listen regularly and it got out of sight and mind. In the meantime I started working (volunteering) at a small regional broadcasting company in my hometown of Winsum. I got the possibility to make my own programmes and one of them I titled " Highlands and Islands" a reference to Scotland of course, but also a reference to the region where I live (het Hogeland  -  Highland) and the Waddensea with small islands. Due to illness I was not able to make the show in our radiostudio, but my homestudio was good enough to make broadcastings. I started broadcasting at Mixcloud and posted my recordings there. Looking for music I discovered your Irish and Celtic Music Podcast at Mixcloud. Nice surprise! Started listening again. Thought it would be nice to reach out to you. Want to make my compliments for your shows and your perseverance in making them. Way back you were in the 100 - 200 range; now almost 700!! I promoted your show to my small group of listeners (Celtic Folk is not that big in the Netherlands) and will do so in the future. Keep up the good work! Kind regards,"

Producer/Host: Amy Browne This month: Last fall, a representative of American Iron & Metal (AIM), the multinational scrap metal company that owns part of the former mill site in Bucksport, raised the possibility of partnering with the town to reopen the mill’s old landfill to accept construction and demolition debris. Though they own the property, as a private company they are required under Maine law to partner with a municipality or the state. Since they floated the idea verbally in October, no official written proposal has been received, but the as town officials and concerned residents have explored the issue, new issues have come to light — not only about reopening the old landfill, but about the condition of that existing site, which it as it turns out, has been out of DEP compliance for years. In January we spoke with several concerned residents and Town Manager Susan Lessard. First up for dissection was the pros and cons of growing startups hiring talented people out of the big tech companies. We then turned our attention to the idea that many Silicon Valley VC firms are seeking returns so vast that they're overlooking viable investment opportunities in order to discover the next 'super unicorn'.  ----more---- In this episode we reference the following article: Napkin Math – Venture Capital Is Ripe for Disruption

Don White is the President & CEO at Satisfi Labs. Coming from an algorithmic training designer background with Bloomberg, Don and his colleagues now use their talents to make information more accessible for places people like to go. Since 2016, Satisfi Labs has been working to optimize digital relationships with guests while maintaining a great guest experience by allowing for personalization, but avoiding the repetitive transfer of information. In this episode, Don talks about the benefits of optimizing labor through AI, the answer engine, and role-based assistants.   Optimizing Labor through AI   "We look at the roles that people can't potentially fulfill."   Some tasks are just impossible to do. Luckily, there's a unique advantage to using artificial intelligence technology to assist staff in completing these intense tasks. By using a system that is designed to learn, an ever-improving system can be implemented to help take on these immense challenges. Not only will this system already provide meaningful results, it will also help improve the performance of employees by assisting them in a way that could never be reached before.    By answering simple questions to teach the AI, an AI can create a solution for a question that can be asked in 13 million different, unique ways. This creates a new opportunity in the world of guest service efficiency, allowing for simple questions to be answered in a way that maintains a fantastic guest experience while also enhancing the employee experience. It does this by avoiding the repetitive transfer of common information.  The Answer Engine   "The guest experience is optimized if they get the information in real time."   In a world where information is constantly fed to us, whomever gives us the information we like the quickest wins. It's important to recognize that this day and age requires real-time, quick responses, as the expectation for immediate answers is on the rise. Don and his team have already seen a benefit to the guest experience by using AI within the attractions industry.    The guest experience is the most optimized when the guest gets the information accurately, in real time, and always finds it available. By making ‘The Answer Engine' accessible to guests in as many ways possible, whether it be via phone or computer, guests will find it easy to get quick answers to questions while simultaneously leaving the door open for specific personalized experiences where needed.  Role-Based Assistants    "People like to ask, and just get."   AI Assistants can be very valuable, and one of the core ways to utilize them is to have them play a guest-facing role. By implementing these virtual assistants into your operation, not only will it come with real-time, quick information, but it will also be accessible 24/7, something guests would greatly appreciate.   Many people find themselves planning a vacation or having a question at an odd time where there may not be an employee to help them in the office. By having these assistants play guest service roles, it can not only provide important and direct information, but it can also keep guests satisfied even outside of office hours. Not only this, but a role-based assistant could assist an employee with a simple task while the employee handles a more complex and unique situation. He's also played just about every stage in Tulsa during his nearly 30-year career. If there was a Mount Rushmore for modern Tulsa musicians Paul Benjaman's sunglassed smiling face would be there representing the new Tulsa Sound. Paul has toured all over the US and Europe, and played many music festivals, including representing our city and state's music scene numerous times at South By Southwest. Since 2010, he has been featured on multiple Horton Records releases, including a few studio albums. He also appears on the 2020 compilation “Back to Paradise: A Tulsa Tribute to Okie Music” where he covers JJ Cale, Don White, Steve Pryor and Teegarden & Van Winkle.” Paul learned from legendary guitarist Junior Brown and has worked with Steve Earle, Jamie Johnson, George Porter Junior of The Meters, John Densmore of The Doors, Kris Kristofferson, Rita Coolidge, Gary Busey and many more. There was also an appearance on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon as sideman for the T Bone Burnett produced Secret Sisters.  When he's not playing live music, he's been helping others learn how to play guitar for 25 years through as an instructor at Guitar House of Tulsa. We featured a great article on the business earlier this year that is linked in the show notes. We discuss his musical origins, his long career in music and what has kept him in Tulsa all this time. We talk about the current state of the music scene and what he's got in the works and lots more. Following our conversation, you can hear his song, “Sneaker.” He is a really cool dude and a heck of a musician. Welcome to The Apple Seed! Some time filled with stories for you and your family. Since 2013 we've been bringing you tall tales, personal tales, fairy tales, historical tales and more. All kinds of tales, from all kinds of tellers. Families are such an important thing. We enter life into a family, and then we generally will be around them the rest of our lives. The most important events in life are spent with family, and family is there when you need help the most, so it's natural to have stories about family and the impact its members can have on each other. Each family is different, and so each story is unique, and it's something that makes the world beautiful and varied. Today we have some stories about family, among others, and each is a different take on what family means. We'll be able to listen to Don White, Joe Pagliuca, and Donna Ingham. On today's episode, enjoy the following: “Sweet Sue” by Donna Ingham from Waiting for Roy & Other Family Tales (2:45) Radio Family Journal: "Stories About Other People" by Sam Payne (17:08) The Daily Mix: "Jackie Torrence" with Ed Stivender (22:45) “Crying Woman's Channel” by Don White from More Alive (30:57) “Tricky the Turtle & the Lion's Cave” by Big Joe Pagliuca from 6 Silly Stories (47:44)

We're over a year into the transition from physical to digital tickets in sports entertainment venues – but are contactless tickets here to stay? This week on Salary Capped, host Daniel Litwin brought back a previous guest in Don White, CEO and Co-Founder of Satisfi Labs, to break down a Satisfi Labs study in partnership with the MLB that analyzed over a million questions baseball fans have asked within the league's app.The study found that 53% of fans have never used a digital ticket. White weighed in on what this means for the staying power of digital tickets and the evolution of ticketing as a whole.“About 25% of the questions we handle are about tickets. The evolution of ticketing has been fantastic to see, because these fans or customers are able to take what they purchase and align it with the technology of their mobile device. So, they can get the most out of each and every experience. There was such poor app adoption pre-COVID. Now, the ticket is the major place where the app can add value. On top of that, everything you need to know about the event – what you're trying to do, what you need to accomplish when there – becomes right in the palm of your hand. What's interesting about mobile ticketing is that, even in our customer base, we've helped 125,000 fans that go to baseball games find out how they could use the ticket in their app or how to get it and adopt it more quickly. Now that we've seen the digital contactless environment, you'll see that the venues are just looking to add more value to the ticket experience. Our data shows that this trend is not going away.”

Fire is an integral part of humanity. It is studied in history, chemistry, physics, nature, and much more. It plays a role in folktales, cooking and all walks of life- providing warmth and light as well as danger. In these stories we will see how fire can play a part in all walks of life- whether it be through the sun and folklore of light, or the tiniest firefly, fire is part of all of humanity and all of nature. As an element it demands respect as it can be destructive and terrifying. But, it can also bring much warmth and wonder to one's life if you learn how to control it and respect it. It takes bravery to face a fire, but sometimes it comes just when you need it. So, as we listen through these stories, think about fire and the wonder of life that it can bring. On today's episode, enjoy the following:"The Boy and the Firefly" by Antonio Rocha from Cross Roads: Stories from Brazil & the World (7:08)Antonio Rocha is a native of Brazil and includes imagery from Brazil's vast landscape in a lot of his stories. In this story he details the adventure a little boy takes into the jungle when he follows a beautiful bird. A little like Mogli from The Jungle Book, this little boy encounters many different animals, simply asking them if they could lead him home. All refuse until a small firefly comes and lights his way home. This story plays the line between nature and humanity wonderfully.  "The Rabbit In The Moon" by Antonio Sacre from Water Torture, the Barking Mouse, and Other Tales of Wonder (6:50)Antonio Sacre blends beautiful language of English and Spanish together in his fantastic tales and this tale is no different. This folk tale of why in Mexico you see a rabbit in the moon, describes the difference between bravery and beauty. When two characters go head to head- one beautiful and one brave- only one will come out triumphant and bring up the sun.  "The Goblin and the Grocer" by Diane Wolkstein from Hans Christian Andersen Classic Stories (8:20)In this wonderful story Diane Wolkstein describes a mischievous goblin and a miscommunication. Diane Wolkstein is a storyteller based in New York who focuses on fairytales and folktales. This story is all about a goblin not knowing where his heart truly lies- with the grocer who gives him butter? Or with the magic book that sings the most beautiful lullabies?  "Go Light The World on Fire" by Don White from Winning Streak (2:23)A singer songwriter and storyteller Don White shows us again just how to combine all of the light of stories with music in a wonderful way. Boston based Don White has been traveling and storytelling since before 2011, and has cultivated his craft throughout the years. In this wonderful song he depicts the real value of passion and light that can drive you to new places, and beyond the typical bounds of life. May we listen and reminisce, remembering to work towards what we love.  "York, Maine" by Mike Agranoff from Or Would You Rather Get A Job (3:42)Just as fire can be beautiful and wonderful it can also be destructive and fear inspiring. In this song by Mike Agranoff we see a wonderful story of the importance of knowing what you care about most. The importance of family and love and the fire of friendship can not be overcome by the fire of destruction.  "Hanukka in Chelm" by Joel Ben Izzy from Lights and Laughter (9:40)In this silly story Joel Ben Izzy describes the town of Chelm- a town of fools who think themselves smart. Joel Ben Izzy is an award-winning storyteller who begun storytelling in 1983. He has traveled in some 36 countries throughout North and South America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. All of this traveling has informed a lot of his stories including this story about silly people and their battle against the elements.  "Og Saves the World" by Mark Binder from A Holiday Present (3:28)Mark binder is classically trained as an actor, director and playwright, he often tours the world as a performer, transmitting the joy of story across distances. He tells stories for adults and children and in this story he tells the story of Og- a man that is afraid of the sun going away. May this ball of fire not be eaten up by the snake in the sky, and if Og has anything to do about it, it won't.  "Gypsy Davey, One Year" After by Mike Agranoff from Or Would You Rather Get A Job (5:07)Mike Agranoff is a folk teller who “draws his material from sources as diverse as traditional ballads and fiddle tunes, Tin Pan Alley, contemporaries in the Folk World, and his own witty pen.” In this story song he describes the after-story of Gypsy Davey and what happened to him and his family after everything was over. It is a fun tale of sacrifice and new relationships, ever helped by time.

Sometimes those memories are sparked by listening to personal stories, and other times by listening to tall tales and fairy tales. So sit back, relax, and get ready to have the memories wash over you as you listen to stories about life lessons, queen bees, and a drop of honey.  On today's episode, enjoy the following:"Passing it On, I: Raised in the Briar Patch" by Betty Ann Wylie from Pass it on: A Storyteller's Journey (9:02)    Our first story today acts as a sort of audio essay about what life felt like when Betty Ann Wylie was growing up. It's full of rich detail and we hope that it will bring back picture memories for you of how things were when you were a child, or if you are a child, how you'd like to remember this time that you're living.  "Life Lesson from Larry" by Don White from Live at the Guthrie Center (6:46)Don White has survived and been on stage for more than twenty years, eliciting from his audience laughter and tears with his comedic storytelling style. In this story, Don shares some important life lessons he's learned from his father, Larry.  "Drop of Honey" by Mary Wright from Mary Wright Stories (6:56) Mary Wright shares a folktale that endeavors to prove that even the smallest events - in this case a drop of honey falling off a grain of rice - can have major consequences.  "The Queen Bee" by The Storycrafters from Yarns of the Brothers Grimm (23:24)A story about a drop of honey is a great segue into this next story called "The Queen Bee", told in the inimitable style of The Storycrafters, the husband and wife duo of Barry Marshall and Jeri Burns. It's a quest story that you're sure to enjoy.  Radio Family Journal: "Ernie's Hits" (5:35)That questing story from The Storycrafters brings to Sam's mind a memory of going on a "bear hunt" in Elementary School. Did you ever take part in that audience participation song? And this memory leads to another memory about Sam's family's records. Here's another entry in the Radio Family Journal.

It's a story form that can be found in everything from "Romeo and Juliet" to "The Fantastics". Sounds a little like "Little Red Riding Hood", right? You're sure to enjoy "The Tiger's Eyes".  "I Moved to Maine" by Don White from Live at the Guthrie Center (7:40) In this funny and touching story, storyteller and musician, Don White, shares some of the experiences - including hitchhiking and the arrival of his first son - that led him to work at a Nursing Home in Maine.  "The Wise King Uruk and the Foolish King of Aratta” by Judith Heineman from The Magic Carpet: Songs and Stories from Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt (15:02)And now a story all the way from Mesopotamia about two kings - one wise, and the other foolish. It's defintely one of those stories with an important lesson to be learned.  "Sandals" by Fran Stallings from Stories and Songs for a Green Earth (5:00)Our last story, in addition to speculating how sandals may have come into the world, also has a lesson at the core of it that may increase your wisdom in the world. Over the centuries we've seen countless examples of humankind's fascination with youth, or to be more specific, humankind's fascination with trying to be forever young. There's the quest for the mythical ‘fountain of youth', a spring that supposedly restores youth to those who drink from it or bathe in its waters; there's J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan, a novel in which the titular character staves off growing up by remaining in the magical “Neverland”; today Americans spend billions of dollars each year trying to reverse the effects of aging. Well, on today's episode of The Apple Seed we' re bringing you stories featuring young people who would gladly trade places with an adult, if only to escape “The awkwardness of youth”. In fact that's what we're calling today's episode. You'll hear stories from Bill Harley and Don White, as well as a couple of Junior High and High School reflections from our Producer, Jeff Simpson, and Sam Payne.  On today's episode, enjoy the following:“Forget That Girl” by Bill Harley (23:12)For many decades, two-time Grammy Award-winning storyteller and musician, Bill Harley, has been entertaining audiences well-familiar with “the awkwardness of youth”. In our first story today, Bill shares an experience from his days at Delaware Trails Elementary School in Indianapolis, involving his quest for coolness and his struggles to communicate with girls. From a collection of stories entitled, “Cool in School”, here's “Forget That Girl”.  “Junior High School” by Don White (6:27)Don White describes the woes of what is arguably one of the most awkward times in a young person's life. From a collection of stories entitled “More Alive”, here's “Junior High School”.  “I Would If I Could” by Jeff Simpson (7:17)Apple Seed Producer, Jeff Simpson, often looks back at a particularly awkward experience, involving the opposite sex, and wishes he would have acted differently. And he's willing to share that experience with us here on The Apple Seed. He only asks that you don't judge him…or pity him. Here he is with a story he calls, “I Would If I Could”.  “Camelot” by Sam Payne (13:45)When it comes to Junior High and High School, Sam seems to have fared much better than Jeff. In fact, in an episode of The Apple Seed featuring stories about the awkwardness of youth, this may be the one entry where things turned our well for our protagonist. Which in this case is a confident young Sam Payne, the star of his High School musical, "Camelot".

“...rings with authentic grit.” -Bill Copeland Music News“With naturally gifted vocal command, Manville explores the intricacies of love, life, and the finer things with a sharp eye on details. Her lyrics are heartfelt and genuine and delivered with just the right amount of instinct and emotion."- Douglas Sloan, Metronome MagazineSome People Sing, released in the fall of 2017, is the second solo album from Kirsten Manville, the follow-up to her 2013 release Come With Me. With elements of Americana, folk, country, and blues, the singer/songwriter creates songs that feel like they may have come straight from journal entries. Deceptively simple lyrics paint pictures, tell stories, and evoke a range of emotions. From the pain of finding and losing love, and hard times in a down-on-its-luck town, to the small pleasures of line-dried laundry and homemade pie, and the escapism of a romantic night for two, Kirsten's warm and sultry voice draws the listener in, infusing the songs with feeling and depth.“Music, and specifically singing and songwriting, have always been the primary way I have tried to make sense of the world and the ups and downs of life,” she says. “And hopefully, listeners can relate to the emotions or stories depicted in my songs, and take comfort in knowing someone else is feeling the same way or has the same questions or wants the same things. The is what music has always done for me. Plus, singing is really fun, and it just makes me feel good.”Some People Sing was a Top 5 album pick in the January 2018 issue of Metronome Magazine, and Kirsten was featured on the cover of the magazine in March 2018. The song “...but Down” was included in the Alternate Root Magazine's weekly top 10 in November of 2017.Kirsten's songs have received radio airplay on a number stations both in the United States and overseas, including WUMB and KZUM. Her song “A Simple Life” spent time in the Top 30 charts (peaking at number 11) of The Globe Radio, an Adult Album Alternative format internet radio station, and her song “Play My Guitar” has been in the Top 20 songs on WOSRadio. In July 2013 she was a finalist in the songwriting competition at the Ossipee Valley Music Festival, and in February 2016 she was a winner in the Maine Songwriters Whittlesey Barn Songwriting/Performance Contest. Kirsten performs regularly in the north east, and has had the honor of opening for well-known folk artists Don White and Joe Jencks.
