Why did everything we tried to accomplish — why are we watching it unravel? The topic we're going to talk about today is one of the most important issues that I see, which is that a lot of things under the surface, especially joints, airway issues, issues with kids' necks or adults' necks, can really be the undoing of their bite, of their occlusion, of their growth — and they start early in life.” (3:16—3:45)“I saw a little four-year-old guy yesterday. He's not growing well. His lower jaw is extremely retrognathic. He's very Class II. He also has a bilateral crossbite. He has extremely narrow development. This little kid's jaws also click and pop. And as I'm doing my exam, I'm asking his parents, ‘Does he ever mention this to you?' They go, ‘We thought that was normal. We thought everyone's jaws click and pop. We didn't know he was hurting, but he said it right here.' My next question immediately is, ‘Do you recall any head or neck trauma? Any falls? Falls down the stairs? Normal, typical, kid stuff?' And to a tee, a lot of parents go, ‘Well, we never had a car accident. He never had to go to the hospital or anything. But we do remember normal kid stuff.' Well, “normal kid...

TMJ & Airway-Directed OrthodonticsEpisode #494 with Dr. Drew McDonaldAs an orthodontist, it's easy to just focus on moving teeth. But most of your ortho patients have underlying joint and airway issues — and they've had them before being in your chair! And to shift your thinking so you can recognize and treat these patients, Kirk Behrendt brings back Dr. Drew McDonald to explain the connection between airway, joints, and teeth. I didn't get in the first time. For any predental students listening . . . it's competitive out there. And I know for anybody listening that's applying to school or applying to residency — if you want it, go after it. And if you don't get in the first time, do it again. Because ultimately, this profession gives back to you in so many ways.” (3:47—4:19)“I was tired of not having an answer for something that was commonly coming up in my orthodontic practice as to why patients were relapsing. And what we stumbled upon, or what I feel I stumbled upon, was that most orthodontic patients are there because they've got a joint issue, an airway issue, a tongue issue, or minimal other things — it's not just teeth. And we've got to get to the bottom of why that patient is in our chair to understand how we do treatment and how we keep it stable.” (8:07—8:35)“Recognizing joint issues, airway issues before you get into the case helps you navigate those cases and be successful. And ultimately, you also change the lives of your patients. That's the biggest bit, is people come in with problems they don't even know about.” (8:43—8:58)“In ortho school, we tend to cling to old research that...
The Necessity of CBCT & MRI Imaging in Today's Orthodontic Diagnosis & Treatment Planning Episode #403 with Dr. Drew McDonald Without imaging, you're basically guessing treatment plans — and that's never a good thing! To know the best possible treatment for your patients, you need MRIs and CBCT. And to help you get started, Kirk Behrendt brings back Dr. Drew McDonald to talk about the pushback with imaging as well as the benefits and value they have for you and your patients. Don't go into treatment blindly! You can have clear images that present the truth. To be a better clinician that changes patients' lives, listen to Episode 403 of The Best Practices Show! Main Takeaways: A clear image will help you see under the surface. MRIs can show the severity of joint instability. CBCTs and MRIs are safer than ever before. Having images can increase case acceptance. Imaging will lead the way to being better clinicians. Quotes: “The biggest thing of why [it's important], for me, on what we're talking about with imaging is that it's the truth. You can't fake that. It's right there in front of you in the cold, black mirror that you're looking at on that X-ray or that MRI. And ultimately, it tells your patients the truth. But for me, whenever I started going down the road of, ‘Okay, let's see what's under the surface. Let's see why this patient isn't responding the way that I anticipated,' that really shed a lot of light on what are the true problems here.” (12:07—12:37) “The other unpleasant conversation that you get to have with patients when [relapse] happens is, ‘Well, I thought this was going to stay. Why didn't it?' And it starts to look like you, as the doctor, didn't do your job. Well, no. If you did your job at the front end and diagnosed and said, ‘Hey, we need to take care of not just the teeth but these issues to keep this stable,' then you really did your job and you're in the clear as a doctor.” (13:09—13:33) “Right now, in dentistry, the biggest evolving part of this profession is on the imaging side. I think we're in a huge revolution of how we're going to do dentistry, where everything is going to be in 3D and people are going to routinely do MRIs, not just TMJ specialists. In my world, I think I'm one of the few orthodontists that do it. But it's going to be widespread. And honestly, it gives so much value to the patient. We treat them to the highest standard of care possible instead of limiting what we could do.” (15:02—15:35) “I started looking at my 2D X-rays and then looking at the 3D and saying, ‘Well, I can kind of see this on the 2D.' On a lateral ceph, you can see adenoids. It's clear as day. You can see tonsils clear as day. So, you don't necessarily have to be totally in the 3D world, at this moment, to be able to start looking for the things that we should be looking for. I mean, on a pano, you can see turbinates clear as day on a lot of patients and see noses really well. And also, the biggest thing, you can see joints. So, just in our every day, what you take as a general dentist, what you take as an orthodontist, those images are still very valuable if you know where to look besides just the pearly white things in this little area right here.” (17:24—18:09) “I started saying, ‘Okay, maybe I should be doing [imaging] on a few more patients,' because I'm starting to see maybe this is part of their problem. But I was recognizing surface issues like narrow palates and things that then I go, ‘Well, maybe I should see if there's something causing this under the surface.' And then, at that point, you show the patient, and they go, ‘Yeah, let's follow up on that ENT referral.' I never thought, as a dentist, I'd be writing as many ENT referrals and chiropractic referrals and TMJ stuff that's never thought of as part of your world, but it certainly is.” (18:15—18:52) “One of the most valuable pieces of having imaging behind it is I could go to the ENTs and say, ‘Hey, here are these pictures
The Future Foundation of Orthodontics Episode #319 with Dr. Drew McDonald Orthodontics is more than just straightening teeth. And today's guest, Dr. Drew McDonald, explains how foundational knowledge of patients' issues can lead to more successful treatment and happier patients. Kirk Behrendt and Dr. McDonald talk about the interconnectedness of airway and joints in ortho and how interdisciplinary understanding can help patients long term. Don't be led astray by the esthetic side of things! For more on the importance of foundations, listen to Episode 319 of The Best Practices Show! Main Takeaways: Look under the surface — the foundation — in patients' issues. Airway and jaw joints influence structure, which leads patients into the ortho chair. Ortho is more than straightening patients' teeth. Don't get lost in the esthetic side of things. Straight, white teeth isn't the endgame. Understand who's in your chair so you can give them the best treatment. Quotes: “As an orthodontist, we see patients with teeth that don't fit together, teeth that are crowded, whatever it might be. But at the end of the day, when we start peeling back the layers, we've got to know where that came from. And what we're starting to understand, it seems like more and more every day, is that the airway side of things, the TMJ side of things, the growth and development, that those two factors, especially, really influence and create an orthodontic patient. Somebody with a bad bite and bad teeth, under the surface, there's an airway issue, or a joint issue, or both, a lot of the times.” (06:09—06:41) “If we understand the foundation of our patients from a joint standpoint, from an airway standpoint, from even cervical, spine things, and the bone around their teeth, then we know what's going to be successful and stable long term because we're addressing the under-the-surface things that got the patient into our chair.” (11:45—12:03) “The other nightmare of orthodontists is relapse. So, if we can understand the foundation of our patients and what got them, under the surface, into our orthodontic chair, then we set ourselves up for better success, stability, and ultimately, a happier patient.” (12:34—12:48) “Whenever I, quite honestly, wanted to be an orthodontist, I wasn't thinking about jaw joints or airway stuff. And some of that wasn't really a big part of what we were taught in school. And ultimately, I've gotten to know a lot of very influential people in my life who have taught me so much about the foundational side of joints, of airway. Dr. Mark Piper, he's a big role model of mine. Jim McKee, in terms of the joints. They're not orthodontists. Those dudes, they put something in my head that did not come from orthodontic residency. But as I went back to patients after seeing them talk, I go, ‘This is my everyday patient. All of these Class II patients that all have clicks and pops, that's no coincidence.'” (13:26—14:15) “The things that can lead orthodontists astray is that we start thinking about the cosmetic side, the esthetics, that that's all the endgame is for these patients.” (16:48—16:56) “I think it's easy in ortho, sadly, at this point in the game, to get led astray. And I will say, it's a frustration of mine to see — and I'm not saying anything negative of the people that you see all over certain social media stuff. I'm just saying we have a better story to tell. And I think that the story to tell is that we can do more than straight teeth. It's, we are the people most equipped to do more than straight teeth, and recognize it, and help people structurally.” (17:21—17:47) “You can't just diagnose something and tell somebody they need to do something. You have to be able to motivate them. And ultimately, you have to know why that person's in the chair too.” (19:50—20:00) “I really do think that our place in the world as orthodontists is going to be involved in multidisciplinary health-related things. And again, I know that the

My guest on this episode of Nobody’s Safe w/Brady Laber is former NKU basketball great Tyler Sharpe. Tyler is from Mount Washington, Kentucky and was on the varsity basketball team at Bullitt East High School for five seasons. Tony Barr was the head coach of the Chargers and brought Tyler up to the varsity to lean from upperclassmen Derek Willis, Rusty Troutman, Trey Rakes and Elliott Young. Tyler was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease in middle school and he describes how its effected him and his journey living with this medical condition. Tyler is part of a great class at Bullitt East that takes over as sophomores. He becomes the leading scorer for the Chargers and Bob Blackburn comes out of retirement to take over as head coach. Tyler also talks about Ernest “June Bug” Rakes who was an assistant coach and his son Bailey is one of Tyler’s best friends growing up. Tyler talks about the recruiting process which was not very good for him as he finds himself continually being overlooked for scholarship opportunities. After a long and winding road he decides to attend the University of Louisville as a preferred walk-on. After a season playing very sparingly for the Cardinals (2016-17) he decides that he wants to explore other avenues in hopes for a change at more playing time. One of his former AAU teammates Mason Faulkner directs him toward NKU where again he would have to be a walk-on. Head coach John Brannen explained that the roster is loaded coming off a Horizon League championship team but he would earn his way into playing time if he put in the work. Although things are rough in the beginning, Tyler starts to see time as a role player mostly becasue of his defense. He eventually becomes a solid rotation player that is a threat to make three-point shots on the offensive end of the floor. NKU earns a number-one seed in the Horizon League tournament but losses in the first round to Cleveland State. However, the Norse are invited to play in the NIT and are match with Tyler’s former team the Louisville Cardinals. Tyler returns for his junior season and starts 32 out of 35 games for a Norse team that wins the Horizon League tournament. He talks in depth about the game winning shot Drew McDonald hits to beat the buzzer against Oakland winner the semifinal game. NKU qualifies for the NCAA tournament and Tyler talks about the selection process and the lead-up to that first round game against Texas Tech. After the year head coach John Brannen leaves for the University of Cincinnati and he is replaced by Darin Horn. Tyler talks about the process of Brannen leaving and Horn taking over for his senior year. Senior year was an up-and-down year for the Norse becasue of injuries to key players Jalen Tate and Dantez Walton. Tyler is also injured at times but somehow finds a way to play through it. By February the full compliment of players are back in time for NKU to win another Horizon League tournament championship. Unfortunately. the NCAA tournament is canceled due to COVID-19 and that is how Tyler’s career comes to an end. But that is not the end of the story. Tyler applies to for a waiver to NCAA to get the year of eligibility back from his time at Louisville where he player just 11 minutes total as a walk-on. He goes into detail about the process and the results which is disappointing to say the least. As for now, Tyler is at peace with his career although disappointed as how it came to an end. He talks about his future plans which includes a possible professional basketball career, his engagement to former NKU soccer player Samantha Duwel (https://nkunorse.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/samantha-duwel/3989) and starting his work career working for Solgen Energy. Tyler is doing a giveaway involving his NKU game-used shoes and some of this practice gear. All you have to do is contact him via DM, instant message or more preferable his email address which is tyler.sharpe@solgenpower.com. All you have to do is setup a free appointment with him to talk about converting your home from electric to solar and you’re automatically entered for the giveaway and he is taking entries up until Christmas 2020. Also, if you are a home owner and want to refer a fellow home owner, that is also a way to enter for this giveaway of authentic NKU gear. Drew McDonald has a strong lineage when it comes to athletes in his family especially on his mom’s side of the family. It starts with his grandfather Tom Freppon who played basketball at Newport Catholic High School and Xavier University during the late-1950’s and early-1960’s. Tom Freppon had four children and at least four grandchildren that all played college athletics: * Son Tom Jr played basketball at Thomas More * Tom, Jr.’s two daughters Kaela Jo (Xavier/NKU) and Mikah (Lewis) both played college volleyball * Daughter Pam (Wurtz) played volleyball at Western Kenutcky * Daughter Debbie (Zegarra) played volleyball at Midway * Daughter Christie (Drew’s mom) played basketball at NKU * Christie’s daughter (Drew’s sister) Rachel McDonald currently plays volleyball at SIU-Edwardsville Drew’s father Jeff McDonald was a tennis player at Northern Kentucky. Young Drew McDonald didn’t get toys from Santa Claus as a youngster, instead he was left sports equipment under the tree each Christmas morning. Growing up Drew was a fixture in the basketball gym. While his mom Christie coached the girls basketball team at Newport Central Catholic he started as a water boy, became a team manager and eventually a practice player all before he was in high school. He followed his family by attending Newport Central Catholic High School and playing basketball for head coaches Grant Brannen and Hall of Famer Ron Dawn. During his time on “The Hill” Drew’s teams won three All-A Classic state tournament championships. Like his parents, Drew signed to play basketball at Northern Kentucky University. He committed to Norse head coach Dave Bezold but he was let go before Drew’s senior season. NKU hired another New Cath alum, and older brother of his high school coach, John Brannen. Brannen reassures Drew that he wants to build the program with Drew as a key contributor. After a tough freshman season where the Norse only win nine games, NKU puts together a dream season in 2016-17. The team becomes just the second team to advance to the NCAA tournament in its first season of eligibility since 1970. Drew talks about the unlikely Horizon League tournament championship run and playing Kentucky in the NCAA Tournament. In 2018, NKU had an incredible run where they won 17 home games on its way to the Horizon League regular season championship. Unfortunately, the Norse, as the number-one seed, get bounced in the first round of the league tournament. After the loss to Cleveland State, NKU is invited to play in the NIT against another in-state opponent the Louisville Cardinals. Drew’s senior season is up-and-down as he suffers a back injury in February and NKU goes on a three-game losing streak. However, the Norse bounce back and make another NCAA tournament appearance. In the semifinals of the Horizon League tournament he hits a last second three-point shot to beat Oakland and advance into the championship game against Wright State. After the Norse dispose of Wright State to win its second tournament crown in three seasons, NKU draws Texas Tech in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Drew describes the Red Raiders as the best team that he played against in college and is very complimentary of head coach Chris Beard. After beating NKU, Texas Tech advances to the championship game where they lost to Virginia for the national championship. Drew reflects back on some of his individual accomplishments that include a 37-point game, with 30-points in the first half, against Cleveland State. He joined the 1,000-point club along with his mother Christie (Freppon) and becomes the all-time leading scorer and rebounder in the program’s history. After briefly considering either playing basketball professionally or returning to NKU for a 5th-season of eligibility on the golf team, Drew decides to officially retire from active competition. This week Flash sits down with the current reigning Progress Wrestling Atlas Champion RAMPAGE BROWN. They discuss his transition from Football to Wrestling; his friendship with British Wrestling legend Drew McDonald; his stint at the WWE developmental territory FCW and how he returned from the states deflated but has gone on to be one of the best big men not just in Europe but the world today!
Am 09. Februar 2015 verstarb eine Legende des europäischen Ringkampfes. Wir dachten uns, dass es Anlass genug ist, euch diesen Mann vorzustellen. The Life & Times of Drew McDonald heißt es in der neuesten Wrestling Time Machine.
