2 Samuel 24 // Ben BeasleyThe question isn't if we'll fall. It's when. Some can ignore it for a while, but eventually, we come to terms with our own proclivities, areas of brokenness, and destructive behaviors. If we're honest with ourselves, everyone has moments and sometimes seasons when we've intentionally made destructive decisions toward ourselves, toward others, and God. Where do you fall, when you fall? One of the key dynamics throughout the whole Samuel scroll is comparing Saul and David. Fascinating: David and Saul both fall. David is — in many ways — recorded as falling harder and farther…but the difference is that David knows where to fall. When Saul was faced with his sin, he blamed others, and tried to just avoid consequences. When David was faced with his own sin, he owned it. All of it. And he fell into the Lord's hands…because he trusted that God's mercy would get the last word. When we fall on the LORD, his mercy gets the last word. What about you today? David Downs joins Purposely to share his story. David is an optimist, driven by purpose who is dedicated to serving others. Nominated for 'New Zealander of the Year' he is the ultimate multi-tasker and over achiever. David is a cancer survivor who overcame the odds to beat a form of blood cancer that had affected his lymphatic system. A terminal prognosis from his doctor had given him only a year to live, however, ‘a series of lucky breaks' gave him access to a drug trial in the USA. The treatment, revolutionary CAR T-cell therapy, saved his life . David has always talked freely about his cancer and wrote a column in a newspaper sharing details of his journey. It was this publicity that helped him to access the life-saving drug trial. He has written a book on his cancer (A Mild Touch of the Cancer - now a documentary film) and he spends many hours supporting and advocating for people with the disease. We look back at the start of his career and how his Irish roots played a fundamental role in shaping his beliefs and values, as well as his career. Humour and performing played a significant role in his household growing up, he starting out as a comedian, then actor and eventually opened his own venue, The Comedy Club in Auckland. David is now CEO of The New Zealand Story, an ambitious government-funded organisation marketing New Zealand to the world. Previously, David was a General Manager at New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) for 10 years, working with the Technology sector to help fast growing tech companies grow internationally. At the beginning of the Covid-19 lockdown, David co-founded sosbusiness.nz - a not-for-profit initiative to help bars, cafes and other small businesses sell vouchers. It quickly became a huge hit and to date has sold over $2 million in vouchers for over 2500 small businesses. All the money goes to the businesses. Based on that experience, he published a book about the innovation that happened during Covid-19 in New Zealand, 'Silver Linings', published by Penguin Random House. David studied at Massey University, the University of Auckland and Stanford University, and regularly presents and gives talks on his cancer journey and on the power of positive thinking and optimism. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mark-longbottom2/message
Welcome to Episode 23! Show notes here: https://sustainable-ecom.com/ep23 Today I'm joined by Prisca Ongonga-Daehn, founder and CEO at Baresop. In a nutshell, Baresop make powder-based personal care products, like soap, & body wash. You basically purchase re-usable foaming dispensers and refill them from home compostable sachets, completely avoiding single use plastics. As you'll see, Baresop has only been around a few years, but is on a remarkable trajectory fuelled by Prisca's seemingly insatiable desire to live to her fullest potential and make maximum impact while doing it. Aside from the immediate impact of avoiding single use plastics, it's actually mind boggling how many social projects Prisca's team are involved in for such a young company. Truly inspiring!

In this episode I spoke to a sweet friend of mine, Abbey Dean and her dear husband, Amos. I am so proud of the kingdom work they are doing in the media and film industry and I wanted to hear their story. Little did I know I was getting a two for one! You may remember that episodes 25 & 26 were focused on dating God's way. Well, Abbey and Amos have a love story that would not have come to pass had they NOT dated God's way. Their union and their mission is rooted in purpose and it is so inspiring. Enjoy… Valerie Kote-Tawia, Live Set Apart! Host

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a call for action. As part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all UN Member States in 2015, the SDGs outline change to create peace and prosperity for people and the planet now and into the future. With UN Member States making the commitment to SDGs, what role do businesses and start-ups play in attaining these goals? Why is it important to integrate Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) into innovation for start-ups? This discussion focuses on the importance of being purpose driven and planning for the long-term impacts businesses have on our collective future. Our experts will explore why siloes are the antithesis for innovation and why empathy is imperative for founders.
One of the hallmarks of someone who has maturity in their walk with the Lord is perseverance and confidence, knowing that God is always at work for your good. Every artist knows what it is to have doubts, to be discouraged, frustrated, and feel inadequate in what they are called to do. It is the man or woman that stays the course that overcomes, both in the faith and their work. That brings a confidence that there has been both plan and purpose to all they have lived through in the Lord. Michael knows the power of understanding these truths in our lives. We were honoured to welcome Aashim Malhotra, the Vice President and Managing Director, Asia-Pacific Region at Dole Packaged Foods, to the EMEA Recruitment podcast. “Together, we are all fuelled by passion, by purpose; we truly want to do our part to contribute in making the world a better place.” Although COVID-19 cases continue to rise across Asia as this episode was recorded, Aashim spoke to Paul Toms following a period of resilience, of which he believes we will emerge stronger, wiser and better prepared for the future. Another big learning that Aashim has taken from the pandemic is the need to care for nature. From a business perspective, he is clear that ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) commitments must not be empty. Aashim reveals the steps he takes to cope and look after himself, explaining the three tips that have worked “wonders” for him. A change in culture at Dole has also ensured that employees enjoy some downtime and come into the week feeling fresh. Aashim has worked for large organisations in different parts of the world, but now enjoys leading and serving small teams with big ambitions at a mid-sized organisation. Dole's people are committed to the purpose of making the world a more equitable place, which empowers Aashim and drives his passion. Although the challenges are huge, Aashim is proud to build world-class teams, learn from different cultures and expand his mind. With the ethics of companies now under the spotlight of potential employees, Aashim explains how Dole finds quality people that share its purpose. Dole is managing to bring in great people based on a winning combination of purpose and vision with key skills and competencies. It was a conversation with a former Unilever colleague that motivated Aashim to take a chance at Dole. After almost two years at the company, he feels that he's building something amazing. In previous roles, Aashim's been required to delve into the numbers, so he has a strong belief in the power of using data for game-changing innovations. Dole is now becoming a data-driven organisation, utilising data science professionals and artificial intelligence tools. He explores the trends that he's seeing within the food and beverage industry. A move towards mindful eating ties into Aashim's commitment to meditation. With more information available, consumers are making more environmentally conscious choices, Aashim explains. We finish the episode by finding out what would guarantee to make Aashim smile. It's an inspiring answer that perfectly sums up the theme of the episode. My special guest today is Kyra Mitchell Lewis, who started Glow Up, Gyrl, an online membership community for women who are looking for balance and purpose in their lives, and Glow Getter University, with tracks for personal evolution and entrepreneurship. There's a link to a free account if you scroll down in the show notes. If you have been listening to The Driven Woman Podcast for a while, you have heard me say that any woman can be an entrepreneur if she really wants to, and Kyra possesses many of the traits I believe entrepreneurs must have in order to be successful in the crazy world of online business. As you listen to this interview, you will readily see that her mindset is her biggest asset. Nothing is going to stop her, discourage her or slow her roll. She is probably one of the most positive, optimistic, and resilient women I have met since starting this podcast. We did two back-to-back recordings, for The Driven Woman and Kyra's podcast, Glow Up, Gyrl, and had several tech challenges that interrupted the recording experience. Instead of getting frustrated or angry, each time we had to stop and start over, Kyra just laughed and picked right back up again. Key takeaways: Why Kyra started Glow Up, Gyrl & who she servesThe difference between Kyra and her husband as entrepreneurs How she leads from an attitude of gratitude When I connect with another female entrepreneur who is as driven, hardworking, and generous as Kyra Mitchell Lewis, I am eager to partner with her again, which is why I said YES to Kyra's invitation to speak at her online summit on Thursday, October 28th. Whether you are an entrepreneur or just want to evolve to the next version of yourself, this summit is a must. Today, we answer a question asked by business owners and influencers of all sizes: How do you expand the reach of your message through PR? It's really important to have multiple avenues to reach your audience when you're not able to see them in-person. We address: Why it pays to hire a professional PR person Getting on Shark Tank and other mainstream platforms Positioning yourself as a thought leader via personal branding alone Reaching your audience in 2020 How PR has changed with the influx of nontraditional media (ex. podcasts, blogs, etc.) Earned versus paid media Using a PR person to handle crisis communications Karen Morales welcomes Lauren Gill, who has been working in public relations for over two decades now. Prior to co-founding her own agency, Mooring Advisory Group, Lauren supported the #1 tech media company in the world, and gained corporate experience in PR, event planning and business development. Lauren shares how business owners can create a foolproof strategy to more efficiently and effectively get their message out to the world, and explains why it seems easy for some to get coverage while others find themselves pushing a boulder up a hill. In today's episode, Lauren discusses what makes a “newsworthy” story, the power of being “pleasantly persistent”, the benefits of hiring a professional PR person, how startups should incorporate PR, how to be perceived as a thought leader in the media, how to know whether to utilize more conventional or unconventional media strategies (i.e. commercials versus podcasts or FB Lives), and when to hire a PR person for crisis communications. 3 MAJOR POINTS DISCUSSED Your story can become “newsworthy” based on how you tell it and knowing who to reach out to so that your story spreads. Thousands of people write for The New York Times, but if you pitch to an individual reporter who happens to not care for what you have to say, your story will never see the light of day. Lay out your target audience, hone in on who will want to hear your message among different publications, and get ready to be persistent with follow-up—which is more important than ever these days. PR is more important than ever in 2020 because people aren't able to get in front of their clients as easily. Third-party validation can tip the scales of success for you if you know how to get it during these turbulent and uncertain times. Having the right strategy when it comes to social media activities can be a game changer because everyone is hungry for content and interaction. Get started with a PR campaign for your business today by tapping into your network and trying to get referred to an agency that can address your specific needs. You can also do your own research simply using Google. The point is to evaluate a fair number of agencies because different companies have different styles. Of course, it will also greatly help to know your why, core values, key message, and marketing goals so that you can have a more productive conversation with your future agency. Mike Weber grew up in the Midwest and earned his degree at Cornell University while selling books door-to-door with Southwestern Advantage. He then enjoyed success as a sales rep for Great American Opportunities— Southwestern's national fundraising company that helps kids raise millions of dollars for educational and community organizations that are changing lives. In 1993, he founded Southwestern's Leadership Institute with a focus on equipping people with the skills and attitudes needed to excel in today's dynamic world. For the past 20 years, Mike has motivated and inspired people from all walks of life to break out of restrictive patterns of thought and behavior, and open themselves up to achieve greater success in whatever their field. Engaging and energetic, Mike's passion is to ignite performance by helping people recognize and then challenge patterns and assumptions that may be holding them back from all they could accomplish and enjoy. Mike lives in New Hampshire, is married to Jane, the love of his life for more than 30 years. He has two adult sons, Kurt and Eric, as well as two wonderful daughters-in-law, Jessica and Nicolette. He's coached soccer, run cross country, climbed snow-covered mountains, and driven the chase vehicle for a hot air balloon team. Mike now speaks internationally on the topics of leadership, resiliency, teamwork, communication, and life purpose. Show Highlights: There's a huge difference between teaching and training. In training, the goal is change of behavior. —Mike Weber Public speaking is a skill set just like playing an instrument. —Mike WeberWhen things get tough, you need a defined focus and meaningful purpose. A purpose drives everything. —Mike WeberYou need a routine or discipline of what you need to do to be successful. —Mike Weber Discipline and structure is what got me through when things got tough. —Mike WeberIn the morning, I wake up at the same time, stretch, and have a dedicated reading time. —Mike Weber Mikes final thoughts: You need to know who you are and what's important to you. Jo-Ann Pohl, CFO at African law firm Bowmans, discusses a day in the life of a CFO: it's about spending time with people rather than just checking emails and crunching numbers. Oh, and emails are often not the best way to get things done. A phone call or a face-to-face meeting is far more effective. And then get your staff on training - it's a life-long process.
Social Jack™ Influence Factory Episode 63: Nicole Martin – “Keynote Speaker Driven by Purpose” Air Date: Wednesday, May 22, 2019 HAVE QUESTIONS? - Leave a comment below and we will get back to you within 48 hours. The Influence Factory is a LIVE webcast that airs every Wednesday at NOON Central (via Zoom and Facebook LIVE). In the #InfluencerNewsUpdate segment… During the Influencer News Update, the team discusses “How the LinkedIn Algorithm Works in 2019”, an article by Michael Quoc via Falcon.io. Here is what we discussed: - In October of 2018, LinkedIn updated its feed algorithm to help private users get their content seen while simultaneously reducing the reach of LinkedIn’s “Power Users”. - Even though interactions on LinkedIn have grown 50% YoY, the majority of those interactions were with the top 1% of influencers on the platform. - Almost 600 million business professionals share content, grow their networks, and find jobs using LinkedIn. - The main LinkedIn feed is based on an algorithm, not on recency. - Similar to Facebook & Instagram, your news feed is designed to show you content that they think is relevant and that you will engage with, rather than most recent content - LinkedIn users can sort the content in their feed by “Top” posts, or Recent posts. - Fortunately, this means that you do not have to, nor should you, post 20 times a day - Unfortunately, this means that just posting to post does not cut it. If you want to consistently make it into people’s feeds, you will need to be regularly putting out and producing good content that your followers reliably engage with. - It is important to note that your content is ranked and displayed based on your reputation (i.e. how users have engaged with your content before) - While your content is going through the second filter, LinkedIn’s algorithm bots look closely at how your audience engages with your content. - Pro Tip: We highly recommend optimizing your initial post time based on your analytics or other recommended times. Brad Stulberg researches, writes, speaks, and coaches on the science of human performance. He explores the principles of mastery that transcend capabilities and domains – the underlying practices that are necessary for sustainable success – and helps others implement those practices. Brad writes about performance in New York and Outside magazines and co-authored Peak Performance: Elevate Your Game, Avoid Burnout, and Thrive with the New Science of Success. “It's very, very hard to go full tilt without giving yourself time to rest and recover.” High performers are often driven or passionate, and we've discussed passion a lot on The Impact Entrepreneur Show, but we rarely discuss the dark side of passion. When we're truly driven by a passion, we may not have the ability to turn it off or detach from it. This is dangerous because, inevitably, you will burn out and fall short of your peak. That's why rest is a vital ingredient in sustainable success. In Peak Performance, Brad writes about The Growth Equation: Stress + Rest = Growth. (Stress, in this context, doesn't mean something negative – in biological terms, it is any stimulus or challenge to an organism.) Balance doesn't really exist, so we're not going consider this equation in terms of balance. Instead, the challenge is finding just the right amount of friction to keep going without experiencing so much friction that you stop completely. All world-class performers are aware of this cycle. They understand that achieving a goal requires leaving their comfort zone (stress), but what separates the best performers from those that fall short is that the best performers also have the courage to rest. So how can individuals and organizations prevent their passion from turning into obsession and figure out The Growth Equation? Aligning your goals with a purpose greater than yourself, what you are creating, or the amount of money you have in the bank can give you the perspective and mindset necessary to achieve sustainable success. The first step is to reflect on what your core values are, or guiding principles for how you want to live your life and function as a person. Examples of common core values: Creativity, community, intellect, health, knowledge, power, humility, love, relationships. Reflect on one or two values that really resonate with you and what they mean to you, and put a personal spin on it. Then you can ask yourself, “Am I living these core values?” When we combine this sort of visualization and reflection with presence, powerful things can happen. “All great performers have figured out the value of single-tasking.” The key to maintaining presence, especially in today's notification-heavy digital age, is single-tasking. Whether you're having an important conversation with your romantic partner, writing a white paper, pitching a client, or building a financial model, if you are completely focused on what you are doing you tend to have significantly better results and output. One of the simplest tricks to make single-tasking easier is to simply remove temptation. Even when we're not using our phones, for example, their presence has an effect on our brain and our focus. If we remove the possibility of distraction, and another decision, we don't have to rely on our willpower to be productive. -- Resources: Connect with Brad: Website | Twitter | Facebook Peak Performance: Elevate Your Game, Avoid Burnout, and Thrive with the New Science of Success by Brad Stulberg & Steve Magness Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry Into Values by Robert M. Running for any office takes enormous amounts of time, energy, and a passion for the cause. Winning the position of Dallas Independent School District Trustee for District 2 is the hope for Dustin Marshall who has long been captivated by the prospect of education reform. His platform includes addressing four main priorities: early education, empowering principals, racial equity, and teacher development. In this episode, Dustin describes his own experience of navigating school and being raised by a single Mom, how he became fascinated by and committed to education, and his rationale behind each of the four priorities he wants to address if elected. Given his full-time role as CEO, husband and father of four young children, Dustin is clearly driven by purpose in his pursuit to win and serve in the trustee position.
