Dr. Thomas (Tom) Nagle founded the Strategic Pricing Group (now part of Monitor Deloitte) in 1987 soon after publication of the first edition of The Strategy and Tactics of Pricing. For more than three decades, he has advised companies, primarily in B-to-B markets, on how to manage more profitably the five elements of pricing strategy: Value Creation, Value Communication, Price Structure, Pricing Policy, and Competitive Price Setting. In this episode, Tom shares how value is perceived and measured by customers, emphasizing the distinction between economic value and willingness to pay. He also delves into the complexities of pricing negotiations, highlighting the importance of understanding customer perceptions and effectively communicating the impact of products or services on their business outcomes.    Why you have to check out today's podcast: Understand the intricacies of value-based pricing, distinguishing between economic value and willingness to pay, and providing real-life examples illustrating these concepts effectively Delve into these two critical decisions buyers make to help you better understand and influence customer purchasing behaviors Find out practical advice on handling price negotiations, emphasizing the importance of "gives and gets" and strategies to avoid undermining your pricing integrity   "Don't ever believe what the customer is telling you upfront about what their value is. They may believe it, but they don't know the impact." - Tom Nagle   Topics Covered: 01:29 - His early experiences with pricing influenced by his grandmother and how he got into pricing professionally 03:16 - How it is more effective to focus on market response to price changes and gather qualitative insights from clients than just precisely measuring elasticity 08:49 - Important thoughts on why pricing didn't matter much then before its deregulation 11:28 - Explaining the concepts of value and value-based pricing with an example illustrating the point 16:56 - The need to create policies to maintain price integrity and managing negotiations to prevent undermining value capture 23:25 - Discussing the concept of value-based pricing and sharing an insightful example where a service's value was evaluated against the status quo rather than a competitor 26:16 - Tom's best pricing advice   Key Takeaways: "The goal is not to try to put a line between them that's a weighted average of the high prices and the low prices, and call it a demand curve. The goal is to figure out why we have all this variation and use that variation to create segments that eliminate the trade off between price and volume." - Tom Nagle "The value isn't in the product. You can study the product from now until kingdom come, and you are never going to understand the value by studying the product. You have to study how the products' benefits impact the customer's income statement." - Tom Nagle   People/Resources Mentioned: Financial Analysis for Profit-Driven Pricing: https://sloanreview.mit.edu/article/financial-analysis-for-profitdriven-pricing/ Walmart: https://www.walmart.com DuPont: https://www.dupont.com Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award: http://asq.org/quality-resources/malcolm-baldrige-national-quality-award   Connect with Tom Nagle: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/thomas-tom-nagle Email: thomasnaglephd@gmail.com   Connect with Mark Stiving: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stiving/ Email: mark@impactpricing.com

He's a returning guest, having joined us in Episode #353 (2019) when we talked about his book, The Busy Leader's Handbook. He's written many other books — his first being Hardwiring Excellence (2003), a book that was recommended to me when I started serving healthcare organizations back in 2005 — and that book made a huge impact on me. Quint previously founded Studer Group, which received the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 2011. He's also currently a speaker, an entrepreneur, and a philanthropist. His clarion call emphasizes the significance of rewriting conventional healthcare procedures to create adaptable strategies. He's a returning guest (Episode 217) – talked about one of his previous books (co-authored with Dean Schroeder) — The Idea-Driven Organization. His bestselling book, Ideas Are Free, co-authored with Schroeder, was based on a global study of more than 150 organizations in 17 countries. It describes how the best companies go about getting large numbers of ideas from their front-line employees, and the competitive advantages they gain from this. His new book, available now, also co-authored with Schroeder is Practical Innovation in Government: How Front-Line Leaders Are Transforming Public-Sector Organizations. Today, we discuss topics and questions including: As we've learned from you previously… “Roughly 80 percent of any organization's improvement potential lies in front-line ideas.” — Potential? Continuous Improvement vs Innovation? Used to draw a distinction The Tesla factory doesn't have the continuous improvement culture of NUMMI? How much progress have you seen in terms of executives understanding the power of engaging everybody in bring forward and implementing ideas? Alan's first book was with Shingo — “mass creativity” UMass Memorial Health — 100,000 ideas and your role helping them? Tell us about the new book — what prompted you and Dean to write this for this audience? What prompted the research? Educating / influencing elected leaders vs. career government employees The role of front-line leaders vs. senior leaders vs. elected officials? Non-partisan – almost 50/50 from their research party wise The phrase “practical innovation”? Does adopting these practices mean we are “running government like a business”??  Adoption at local (including schools), state, or federal levels? Does “practical innovation” get past pointing simply to budgets as a barrier? Demanding cost savings or ROI is a kiss of death for improvement? 1841 — Original article that invented cost/benefit analysis… “only useful for the simplest…” “Why cost/benefit analysis is stupid“ Would we expect government in Japan to be a leader in Kaizen?

Marilyn Horowitz teaches screenwriting at NYU and is herself a screenwriter and producer and author. Screenwriting is in her blood and she has even been called in to be a script doctor when scripts need some fixing. What is it about movies, TV Shows and plays that makes mostly every author want their book to come alive on the big or small screen? I've always wondered why some books succeed on the screen and some books don't. I've also wondered why some screen adaptations are even better than the books but I never understood what it really takes to do the writing. It just seemed like a foreign language to me. Marilyn shares tips from her trademarked Horowitz System of writing including content from her NYU textbook, The 4 Magic Questions of Screenwriting on this episode. She explains how you can eliminate writers block and also clears up how you can use each side of your brain to write quickly and easily. Marilyn Horowitz is an award-winning New York University professor, TV show creator, producer, and Manhattan-based writing coach, who works with successful novelists, produced screenwriters, and award-winning filmmakers. She has a passion for helping novices get started. Since 1998 she has taught thousands of aspiring screenwriters to complete a feature length screenplay using her method. She completed her tenure as a judge for the Fulbright Scholarship Program for film and media students in 2013 and as a judge for the New York Women in Film and Television (NYWIFT) Ravenal Foundation Grant. In 2004 she received the coveted New York University Award for Teaching Excellence. Professor Horowitz has a created a revolutionary system that yields a new, more effective way of writing. She is the author of six books that help the writer learn her trademarked system, including editions for college, high school, and middle school. The college version is a required text at New York University and the University of California, Long Beach. Two of her books have been used in the Lights, Camera, Literacy! program taught to over 1,000 children in Maryland’s Montgomery County Public School System (a recent recipient of the “Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award” for outstanding scholastic performance). Professor Horowitz writes articles for Script magazine, and she pens a monthly column for MovieOutline.com, an online magazine with 30,000 subscribers. She is featured in Now Write! Screenwriting anthology published by Tarcher/Penguin edited by Sherry Ellis and the 2014 edition of The Expert Success Solution. Marilyn’s latest novel, The Book of Zev, reached Amazon Best Seller status when it was released in December 2014. Professor Horowitz has taught more than 100 classes, seminars, and workshops across the country for groups including the Writers Guild of America East, NYWIFT, Philadelphia Writer’s Conference, Script DC, Screenwriters World East, and the Great American PitchFest. You might remember Karen from a recent post where she told a great story about putting patient safety first. We're talking today about the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and how that framework and process is mutually supportive of Lean and quality improvement. In December, Mary Greeley Medical Center was named a recipient of Gold level recognition in the 2014 Iowa Recognition for Performance Excellence (IRPE) program - the state level Baldrige award. They previously received the Silver level in 2011. In the podcast, we talk about why and when Mary Greeley decided to pursue the Baldrige award, what it was like to be reviewed at the state level, and their future plans for applying at the national level. Karen also shares thoughts about how Baldrige ("the what") and Lean ("the how") fit together, some of their key quality outcomes measures, and how the recognition has helped internally with staff. She also talks about their safety huddles, the importance of "engaging those closest to the work," and the need for a "systematic approach" to capture Rapid Improvement Events and daily improvement work and how their use of KaiNexus has supported those efforts. The hospital was previously featured in episode #201: Ron Smith & Suz Kaprich, the KaiNexus WorkOut at Mary Greeley Medical Center. For a link to this episode, refer people to www.leanblog.org/218. There is deep value in creating meaningful relationships. It is through building relationships that we can truly be servant leaders and add value to others. Our guest Judy Robinett shares how she went from a shy small-town girl to the pinnacles of the business world by doing just that. Judy shares practical steps on what it means to give before you get! Judy Robinett shares how to build a network based on serving others. This is a critical factor for success in business, ministry and in life. She grew up in a small town in Idaho of less than 300 people, so she has had to put in the time, effort and energy to build her network.  In addition, Judy had to overcome her shyness and emotional scars from years of being bullied in school.  Judy shares the turning point that created a shift in how she viewed relationships that changed the trajectory of her life. The key is knowing the value of relationships and how to connect with people to build and solidify those relationships. She says it boils down to a few things; one of those is being in the right room.  You have to connect and bond with people who share your same values and passions and are willing to help; and you have to know the right rooms to find them in. Regardless of where you are in your life, Judy says we all have the following to offer others: Your ability to listen and be a friend. Your willingness to put aside your own troubles and give them the gift of your time. Just talking it over with a trusted friend, solutions can be found to many problems. Listening to someone allows them to know, like and trust you. And when someone knows you and likes you and trusts you, they are far more likely to help you with your problems and to connect you with their sphere of influence. What you will Learn A Biblical model for networking How to find and connect with the people you need in your network The three golden questions and when to ask them – These are powerful!
