HARVEY FIERSTEIN wrote the books ( or adapted the books ) for the Broadway musicals Funny Girl, Kinky Boots. Newsies as well as Torch Song Trilogy (Tony®, Drama Desk, and OBIE Awards), La Cage aux Folles (Tony® and Drama Desk Awards), The Sissy Duckling (Humanitas Award), A Catered Affair (12 Drama Desk nominations), Safe Sex (Ace Award), Legs Diamond, Spookhouse, Flatbush Tosca, Common Ground, and more. His political editorials have been published in The New York Times, TV Guide, The Huffington Post, and broadcast on PBS's “In the Life”. His children's book, The Sissy Duckling, is now in its fifth printing. As an actor, Mr. Fierstein is known worldwide for his performances in films like Mrs. Doubtfire and Independence Day, and on stage in Hairspray (Tony Award®), Fiddler on the Roof, La Cage aux Folles, Torch Song Trilogy (Tony Award®), and TV shows such as “Smash,” “How I Met Your Mother,” “The Good Wife,” “Cheers” (Emmy nomination), “The Simpsons,” and “Nurse Jackie.” Acclaimed originally for his groundbreaking writing and performance in his 1981 Torch Song Trilogy, Harvey Fierstein has refined and redefined the persona of the drag queen in the theater. Two years later, Fierstein brought that insight and humor into his book for the musical adaptation of La Cage aux Folles. As Frank Rich wrote in the New York Times, this “is the first Broadway musical ever to give center stage to a homosexual love affair – but don't go expecting an earthquake. The show at the Palace is the schmaltziest, most old-fashioned major musical Broadway has seen since ‘Annie,' and it's likely to be just as popular with children of all ages.” Fierstein subsequently wrote the book for Legs Diamond (1988) with music and lyrics by Peter Allen, who also starred in the show. He did not return to Broadway until 2002, when he took on the role of Edna Turnblad in the musical adaptation of Hairspray (book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan; music by Marc Shaiman; lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman). According to Ben Brantley, Fierstein's performance as Edna “is not just a cross-dressing sight gag. She's every forgotten housewife, recreated in monumental proportions and waiting for something to tap her hidden magnificence.” After playing Tevye in the 2004 revival of Fiddler on the Roof, Harvey Fierstein wrote the book and starred in the 2008 musical, A Catered Affair. As a writer and actor, Fierstein has won three Drama Desk Awards and four Tonys®, most recently for his portrayal of Edna in Hairspray. His most recent memoir is called I Was Better Last Night. When you find yourself in a shipyard in the middle of the night, you know some $h*t is going down. Welcome to the Punisher. Those kids were twins? Isn't the Punisher normally associated with a city? Not palm trees and Hawaiian shirts? Is there really not a backstory for the logo? Why is Johnny Cash a killer in this movie? That actor is an actual Johhny Cash impersonator, right? Who is the Popeye guy? What did he bring to the story? Why was there such a dramatic reveal of the mom? We are still mad it wasn't Edna Turnblad. Seriously, how does this man not die? I’ve been cooped up inside this house all day and my diet pill is wearing off. Not to worry, we’re back with more social distancing distractions! We watched the John Waters classic Hairspray (1988) with MTMUG all star (and extra in the movie) Brian Boskind (not to worry, we recorded pre-quarantine rules in CA)! Brian fills us in on working with the legend himself John Waters, Debbie Harry oozing coolness in person and Colleen Fitzpatrick almost meeting an untimely end in a teeny tiny car. And we would all lose our gay cards completely if we didn’t mention the amazing Divine as Edna Turnblad. Her performance, wardrobe and styling are worth the price of admission. If you haven’t seen the movie they turned into a Broadway musical that they then turned into another movie - do yourself a favor and add it to your quarantine watch list. It is time to grab a cup of tea (Earl Grey Hot for the Trekkies), strap in and get ready for another episode from the Nerds we all look forward to each week. Also grab a slice of birthday cake and help us wish the DJ a Happy Birthday, yep our favourite funny guy is another year older. Now on with the show; that’s right, we once again have another fun packed episode in which we entertain you with some of the latest topics in Nerd pop culture news. This week we start off with news of an animated series coming from Netflix of Magic the Gathering. While details are limited at the moment it is something to look forward to. The boys have some interesting points to consider with this one, and the chief among them is based on who determines what is canon for stories. Also what is possibly the coolest car commercial at the moment?Next up we look at why brushing your teeth is more important than just to protect your teeth and good breathe. The implications for this are actually quite important, particularly if you want to remember where you hid your favourite comics and figurines. Once again Buck has found a research article that we should take a moment to look at that highlights some very interesting and disturbing facts. So, remember to brush, rinse and floss if you want to have the best health in the nursing home.Next up Professor brings us news that Tesla is now becoming a rolling game console. That’s right, Tesla cars are gaming consoles with the release of another game to play on the in car tablet style interactive screen. Unfortunately you are not able to play them while driving, um, oops, maybe that’s a good thing. We also hear about what some people have been doing with their Teslas that has been noticed by Elon, and trust us, this is not something we recommend. The games played this week show us that Buck truly is a grumpy old man, and that DJ is a fan of Clint Eastwood. But honestly tough, who isn’t a fan of Clit? What game is this, listen in or cheat and scroll down to the link. DJ has been playing Mortal Kombat 11 and still hasn’t exhibited any signs of PTSD, lots of other funny behaviour, but hey, that is normal. Your favorite film analysis podcast moves along slightly in the '80s as the Musical Revue continues with a look at Hairspray (1988). John Waters' cult classic is unabashedly campy and bizarre, but does it hold up to the test of time? As we continue along this musical journey, Hairspray is a bit of an odd departure. The original 1988 film is less a musical and more of a dance film. There are still musical numbers, but they're filled with dance, rather than singing. So, it's a bit off the rails in that regard. But, we still had a good conversation around it. Brushing Out Hairspray John Waters moved away from his transgressive roots with Hairspray. Several of his key players still show up, including Divine as Edna Turnblad, Tracy's mother. But, by and large, Hairspray is a much more accessible film, in comparison to his earlier works. Set in the 60s, Tracy loves watching the Corny Collins Show, which is one of those classic shows where a bunch of pretty teens dance for an hour. Tracy is enamored. Tracy, defined in the film as pleasantly plump, doesn't adhere to societies norms or values, and reaches out to take what she believes is hers—with great success. The film includes a plot thread involving segregation, but as we discuss in the show, it's much more than simply, black and white. On this week's episode, we discuss Cult Directors We Want to Make a Musical. After our standard gameplay and quick reviews, we partner up with Hairspray and hit the dance floor. We talk race, queer film, form and function as we try to dig deep in to the film. GET IN TOUCH Thanks for joining us this week! Broadway legend Harvey Fierstein won one of his several Tonys for his performance as Edna Turnblad in Hairspray. Now, he's reprising the role for NBC's live version of the musical, which airs December 7. He tells us about the weighty task of transforming into Edna and changes he made to the script when adapting it for television.
Joining the guys live, in-studio this week is BRUCE VILANCH, one of the most revered comedy writers in Hollywood! Most know Bruce from his years as one of the “squares” on the Tom Bergeron-hosted “Hollywood Squares”, but what some of you may not know is he has been the head writer for the Academy Awards since 2000, and was one of the main writers for years before that. The great bits and hilarious adlibs that the hosts have performed at the Oscars, the Emmys, and the Tony Awards? Chances are, Bruce wrote the jokes. Bruce was also a hit on Broadway, starring as Edna Turnblad in the long-running musical Hairspray. His stories could fill a book, and soon will! He is funny and revealing here; wait until you hear the role he played in the penultimate episode of “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson”! PLUS: A tribute to the late, great Kevin Meaney.
Beloved writer/actor Harvey Fierstein returns to Theater Talk as he begins to prepare for the upcoming televised musical "Hairspray LIVE!" on NBC. He wrote the teleplay and will star as Edna Turnblad, the Tony Award-winning role he created on Broadway.
Jay's appeared in numerous TV shows but fantasy-action fans recognize him from his appearances on "Stargate Atlantis." He's also an accomplished film actor, with a long list of credits. Mordecai Richler cast Brazeau in "Duddy," a musical based on Richler's "The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz." He's won a Pittsburgh Press Critic's Award for his performance as Cyrano and critical acclaim for his portrayal of Edna Turnblad in the Toronto and Vancouver productions of "Hairspray." We talk about all of the above but I was particularly interested in Jay's work with the Winnipeg office of The National Film Board. Jay was the male voice in animated short film "The Big Snit," which was nominated for an Oscar award and voted number 25 of the 50 Greatest Cartoons of all time by animation professionals.
Academy Award and Golden Globe nominee Anne Archer (Fatal Attraction) is interviewed by Sterling and Stroili about her career and latest stage endeavor: Jane Fonda in the Court of Public Opinion at the Edgemar Center for the Arts in Santa Monica, CA. Broadway and television star Jim J. Bullock (Too Close for Comfort) laughs it up as he talks about his return to Hairspray the Musical as Edna Turnblad at Musical Theatre West in Long Beach, CA. Sterling reviews the Twyla Tharp/Frank Sinatra hit Broadway musical Come Fly Away, at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood; and a new production of Sweet Charity at the Knightsbridge Theatre in Los Angeles. Bullock and Ms. Archer recant embarrassing on stage moments. Sponsored by Breakdown Services (http://www.breakdownexpress.com/)
A conversation with writer/actor Harvey Fierstein, who returned to HAIRSPRAY for the final weeks of the musical’s successful run, playing “Edna Turnblad,” the role that he originated in the hit show 6 1/2 years ago.
