Our Daily Bread Podcast | Our Daily Bread

In the early 1800s, Elizabeth Fry was appalled by the conditions in a London women’s prison. Women and their children were crowded together and made to sleep on the cold stone floors. Although they weren’t given bedding, a tap flowed with gin. For years, she visited the prison and ushered in change by providing clothes, opening a school, and teaching the Bible. But many saw her biggest influence as her loving presence and clear messages of hope. In her actions she followed Jesus’ invitation to serve those in need. For instance, while on the Mount of Olives, Jesus shared several stories about the end of the age, including one about the welcome of “the righteous to eternal life” (Matthew 25:46). In it the King tells the righteous people that they gave Him something to drink, invited Him in, and visited Him in prison (vv. 35–36). When they couldn’t recall doing so, the King responds: “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (v. 40). What a wonder that when we serve others with the help of the Holy Spirit, we serve Jesus! We can follow Elizabeth Fry’s example, and we can also serve from home, such as through intercessory prayer or writing letters. Jesus welcomes us to love Him as we use our spiritual gifts and talents to assist others.

In this episode, they tackle the peculiar portrayal of a pivotal prison reformer, as the book veers off course by focusing on Elizabeth's obsession with her hair and the private thoughts of an imaginary butterly. Listen in as they shed light on Fry's actual accomplishments—including her work in Newgate Prison, her advocacy for female inmates, and her efforts to transform the penal system—while expressing their frustration at the book's failure to depict her as the trailblazing humanitarian she truly was.Stay connected with us on social media and discover more on our website: http://www.chainsawhistory.com

Reformers were on the move. Elizabeth Fry was notable as a woman speaking out in a man's world, campaigning for prison reform, especially for women prisoners. But there were many others, notably the Utilitarian philosopher Jeremy Bentham, who found a strange way of having his body dealt with after death. A slightly ghoulish way. But whatever clarion voices campaigned for reform outside Parliament, real change could only come from inside, and specifically from Ministers. And this led to a strange phenomenon: some first steps towards essential reforms being taken by a man whose reputation was as anything but a reformer. He was the new Home Secretary, and he was taking a highly innovative approach to public opinion, one much closer to politicians' attitudes in our own times. That's Robert Peel storming back onto the scene. Illustration: The reformer and champion of women prisoners, Elizabeth Fry, by Samuel Drummond, ca. 1815. National Portrait Gallery 118.

In spite of opposition, financial crisis and poor health, God gave this humble woman a platform among Parliament members, heads of state and royalty. Yet what did she always point to as the secret to her success? The power of the Word of God and the Holy Spirit to transform lives! (1780-1845): Elizabeth Fry was such a significant figure in British history that she was featured on the five-pound note, and yet most people today don’t even know who she was...which is why we are doing a two-part series on her life! This little Quaker woman was known as England’s greatest prison reformer, but her influence extended well beyond that. Although she is considered a giant of social reform, she was a very “normal” woman like us--full of doubts, fears and insecurities. Yet in her weakness, the Lord would be made strong, as we shall see in today’s episode!  Betsy: The Dramatic Biography of Prison Reformer Elizabeth Fry by Jean Hatton

The United Nations has declared solitary confinement to be a form of torture, so why do Canadian prisons still employ the practice? Today, Justice Vs. looks at how and why solitary confinement is used within the Canadian criminal justice system and the impact it has on those who are subjected to it. We speak with Noa Mendelsohn Aviv, director of CCLA's Expression and Equality programs, and Rachel Fayter, a PhD. candidate in the Department of Criminology at the University of Ottawa, who describes her experience being held in prolonged solitary confinement and her academic work investigating it's particular impact on women and those experiencing mental illness. The John Howard Society does extensive work advocating for the rights of prisoners as well as offering reintegration services for people leaving the correctional system. Life behind bars in English prisons in the early nineteenth century was, to put it mildly, grim. Prisons at the time were often damp, dirty and over-crowded. Common punishments included shipping convicts to colonies like Australia - and many crimes carried the death penalty. And the poor suffered most of all, because they couldn't buy privileges like extra food rations. Into all this walked a woman known as the "angel of prisons", Elizabeth Fry. She was one of the major driving forces behind a new way of thinking about prisons – one that stressed that improving conditions for prisoners and treating them with humanity would lead to better outcomes and lower re-offending rates. A Christian philanthropist from a large Quaker family, her ideas were taken up across much of Europe, and she became something of a celebrity in Victorian England. Joining Rajan Datar to discuss her work and legacy are: Averil Douglas Opperman, author of a biography of Elizabeth Fry called 'While It Is Yet Day'; Criminal barrister, Harry Potter, author of 'Shades of the Prison House – A History of Incarceration in the British Isles'; And Rosalind Crone, historian and author of 'The Guide to the Criminal Prisons of Nineteenth-Century England'. In some of our recent episodes we have been speaking with leaders in the nonprofit and social benefit sectors about the changes and opportunities they anticipate at a system level as we adapt to the new COVID situation in Canada.    Today, we are talking about the front line: what the Elizabeth Fry Society of Greater Vancouver did when the emergency started, how reaffirming their values and principles helped them make decisions, and what they have learned about the scope, influence and interdependence of their work with other nonprofits and the broader society.  Elizabeth Fry supports some of our society’s most vulnerable populations – women, girls and children at risk, involved in or affected by the justice system. Their more than two dozen programs work to break the cycle of poverty, addiction, mental illness, homelessness and crime.   Our guest is Shawn Bayes, the Executive Director of EFry, who has been on the podcast before, talking about strategy for impact.  During her 35-year career with EFry, Shawn has led the creation of numerous initiatives and successfully pursued policy changes to help address deep poverty and homelessness, key risk factors tied to criminalization. She was appointed in 2019 to Canada’s National Advisory Council on Poverty. We were glad she agreed to come back to talk about what’s changed, and what hasn’t, and how EFry is thinking about adapting to the future.     As you will hear in this conversation, COVID has pushed more people on the margin further from safety. Violence, hunger and homelessness are greater risks in the COVID emergency than before, and the possibility of a second wave could compound these risks further. Shawn describes how EFry is preparing for a larger role.     For more about the principles that are the foundation of EFry’s work:https://www.elizabethfry.com/about/guiding-principles/  Shawn Bayes on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/shawn-bayes-3191513a/?originalSubdomain=ca  National Advisory Committee on Poverty: https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/programs/poverty-reduction/national-advisory-council.html  EFry on Twitter: https://twitter.com/efryvancouver?lang=en    . Rápidamente llegó a tener 11 hijos.
