This episode is a reintroduction to The Admissions Club podcast. The EWC team is growing, so we thought we would use this episode to not only introduce new team members, but remind listeners about why we started this podcast and what to expect from future episodes and guests. Co-hosts Elizabeth West and Taylor Florio of EWC College Consulting share about what they wish they knew when going through the college search process and their journey through having a career in higher education. The Admissions Club Podcast is your one-stop shop for all things college admissions, complete with a nostalgic 80s playlist and Gen X vibes. It's hard to believe that we've traded in scrunchies and Bruce Springsteen posters for walking our kids through the college admissions process! But, we are here to share our decades of higher education and direct college admissions experience, with you and your student so you don't have to walk it alone. Biography Early life and family background Ahmed Salman Rushdie was born in Bombay on 19 June 1947 during the British Raj, into an Indian Kashmiri Muslim family. He is the son of Anis Ahmed Rushdie, a Cambridge-educated lawyer-turned-businessman, and Negin Bhatt, a teacher. Anis Ahmed Rushdie was dismissed from the Indian Civil Services (ICS) after it emerged that the birth certificate submitted by him had changes to make him appear younger than he was. Rushdie has three sisters. He wrote in his 2012 memoir that his father adopted the name Rushdie in honour of Averroes (Ibn Rushd). Rushdie grew up in Bombay and was educated at the Cathedral and John Connon School in Fort, South Bombay before moving to England from India to attend the Rugby School in Rugby, Warwickshire, and then King's College, Cambridge, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history. After graduating from Cambridge, Rushdie briefly lived with his family in Pakistan (who had moved there from Bombay, India), before moving permanently to the UK. Personal life Rushdie has been married four times. He was married to his first wife, Clarissa Luard from 1976 to 1987 and fathered a son, Zafar (born 1979) who is married to the London-based jazz singer Natalie Rushdie. He left her in the mid-'80s for the Australian writer Robyn Davidson, to whom he was introduced by their mutual friend Bruce Chatwin. His second wife was the American novelist Marianne Wiggins; they were married in 1988 and divorced in 1993. His third wife, from 1997 to 2004, was Elizabeth West; they have a son, Milan (born 1997). In 2004, he married Padma Lakshmi, an Indian-American actress, model, and host of the American reality-television show Top Chef. The marriage ended in 2007. In 1999, Rushdie had an operation to correct ptosis, a problem with the levator palpebrae superioris muscle that causes drooping of the upper eyelid. According to Rushdie, it made it increasingly difficult for him to open his eyes. "If I hadn't had an operation, in a couple of years from now I wouldn't have been able to open my eyes at all," he said. Since 2000, Rushdie has lived in the United States, mostly near Union Square in Lower Manhattan, New York City. He is a fan of the English football club Tottenham Hotspur. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salman_Rushdie

Hello...thanks for listening! This is my trailer episode. I'll be speaking about women in business, other sides of the stories (so to speak) and a lot of my episodes are love letters to introverts, empaths and highly sensitive people (HSP's) in business and in life. Having worked extroverted jobs my whole life from being a dance instructor to an event manager I look forward to squashing and smashing the stigmas and stereotypes on what being an introvert is and are! There is a spectrum as nobody is 100% introverted OR extroverted we're ALL a little of both which brings me to the next point... I'm not shy and come to find out that being shy is a totally separate characteristic than being an introvert. I'm an outgoing introvert, never have been shy... Oprah is an introvert for example. Did you know that the only difference between an introvert and an extrovert is with how we recharge and energize? I didn't know this until 2020 (very recently!). That's the only difference! Introverts recharge by being alone and extroverts recharge by being around many people. We ALL need alone time periodt. But introverts (when we're at our capacity and we all can feel when we are and it's different for everyone as we're all individuals), that's when we need to recharge. I like to use a cell phone analogy... Just like a cell phone doesn't need to sit on the charger all day, every day to charge, introverts don't need to recharge all day every day, alone...just when we're at our capacity or "in the red" or low on energy (just like a cell phone). Episodes will be between 2-4 in a four week period and there will be solos and interviews! Hit subscribe and follow so you don't miss an episode! And if you have a question or there is a subject that you'd like me to discuss, please leave a voice/audio message on my website www.westelizabeth.com. In this episode, lifestyle and countryside author Fennel Hudson explores the concept of 'countryside contentment', comparing it to the fashionable contentment trends 'hygge', 'lagom' and 'cwtch'. He looks at how natural history and lifestyle authors have described rural contentment, with a quote by Elizabeth West summing up the appeal of the simple life: “For nine years we have been living in comparative isolation and with very little money upon a windswept moorland in North Wales. What effect has this had on us? We are very much more aware of natural things – the feel of the wind, the direction of the sun and the movements and sounds of other living things…We have our own interpretation of Gandhi's philosophy of ‘enoughness'. We want enough money to live our sort of life – we don't want more than enough. And in living the ‘simple life', it is time we are usually short of, not money.” Full transcript of the podcast is available at: http://www.fennelspriory.com/contented-countryman-podcast

Elizabeth West has written an insightful study about the presence of African spirituality in the autobiographies, poetry, speeches and novels of African American women, ranging from Phylis Wheatley to Harriet Wilson to Zora Neale Hurston. West's book is titled African Spirituality in Black Women's Fiction: Threaded Visions of Memory, Community, Nature, and Being (Lexington Books, 2011). It's a powerful read! West's two blubists, literary critics Georgene Bess Montgomery and Dana Williams, do not hold back in expressing their admiration of the work . Both detail how useful the book is to readers, students, and teachers of African American studies. Montgomery writes that “while [the authors West studies] have received much critical attention and analysis, [West's] analysis is quite original and provocative.” And Williams adds that West's book “is an important first step in advancing new frameworks through which to read African American literature.” This provocative examination of how Motherland spirituality inflects, influences, and sometimes challenges and often times mingles with Anglo-Christianity as a rhetorical device for black female authors is too important to miss.
