Because while we won't be trying to gobble 62 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes like world champion Joey Chestnut did last summer, we are going to attempt to digest some of the major doctrinal themes found in the book of Romans in one single podcast! Speaking of Christian doctrine, Martin Luther - widely known as one of the key leaders of the Protestant Reformation in the 1500s – was a dutiful priest who almost drove himself crazy trying to live a life holy enough to please God. He spent hours in prayer every day, he fasted for so long and so often that it caused severe intestinal problems, and he even practiced self-harm, thinking that the discomfort and pain that resulted from intentionally wounding himself was a necessary penance for his sin. It wasn't until he taught on the book of Romans that the Holy Spirit opened his eyes to divine grace – to the unmerited favor of Jesus Christ – and that's what dramatically changed his personal life and gave rise to the Protestant church. Luther described Romans as, “The gate to paradise” because it's what led him from practicing rote religion to experiencing a real relationship with our Creator Redeemer. We hope today's conversation opens the gate for some of you to walk into a much closer relationship with Jesus, too. So please grab your favorite beverage a snack and a Bible – if you have one – and come prop your feet up on the porch with us.

Looking for a lift? The answer might be YouTube. Watching videos on the ubiquitous social media site may make people happier than small talk with casual acquaintances or co-workers, according to new research. In the headlines on #TheUpdate this Wednesday, Rudy Giuliani, the former New York City mayor, federal prosecutor and legal adviser to Donald Trump, was disbarred in New York after a court found he repeatedly made false statements about Trump's 2020 election loss. There are new dogs in this fight. This year's Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest is up for grabs after sixteen-time champion Joey Chestnut was banned from the annual July 4 showdown after signing a deal with vegan protein purveyor Impossible Foods. And in the American West, swaths of California sweltered and things were only expected to get worse during the Fourth of July holiday week for parts of the United States, with nearly 90 million people under heat alerts.

Join us as we delve into the unexpected world of sponsorship agreements through the lens of competitive eating. Joey Chestnut, revered in the competitive eating community for his record-breaking feats, found himself sidelined from this year's Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest. The controversy? A reported sponsorship deal with Impossible Foods, stirring debate akin to sports stars switching allegiances between rival brands. This episode explores the implications of Chestnut's situation. Major League Eating (MLE) contends that existing exclusivity provisions should prevent such partnerships, drawing parallels to iconic athletes and their brand affiliations. Meanwhile, Chestnut maintains there's no binding agreement restricting his choices.

Let's dive in! Before we delve into the poolside podcast idea, let me share an unforgettable moment from my 4th of July weekend. "My family and I gathered at my mother-in-law's house for a classic American cookout. We enjoyed hot dogs, burgers, and the company of loved ones. However, one particular incident involving my special-needs son and a German chocolate cake made the day even more memorable." My son would not allow us to eat the cake without singing Happy Birthday as he associates cakes with Birthdays. So there we all are singing Happy Birthday to America before we eat the German Chocolate Cake. In this episode of the Acquired Taste, we explore the idea of hosting a podcast episode while floating in a pool. We discuss the excitement and logistics of the concept, including the challenges and creative solutions. "As the summer heat intensifies, we're eager to embrace a refreshing and unconventional atmosphere for our show. Picture this: floating on pool rafts, microphones in hand, and enjoying the cool water. That's right, we're contemplating a poolside episode to truly immerse ourselves in the spirit of summer." Did you catch the iconic Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest that saw veteran Joey Chestnut win his 16th contest after a two hour weather deal. The delay did affect the contestants ability to really ingest the hot dogs but Joey prevailed and downed 62 hot dogs to claim his 16th Mustard Belt. This was below his projected number of 71-72 hot dogs and buns but a win is a win. Nothing says “Happy Birthday America” like sitting on your couch watching people down 75 hot dogs in 10 minutes in the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest. In a tradition unlike any other, our nation will celebrate its birthday with the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest. Like our country, the contest's roots run deep. According to Nathan's, legend has it that on July 4, 1916, four immigrants gathered at the very first Nathan's Famous hot dog stand on Coney Island and made eating contest history. As the story goes, they were competing to see who was the most patriotic. The winner was determined with a hot dog eating contest. Let's talk about what everyone is thinking about – vomiting. An eater who has "a Roman incident" or “reversal of fortune,” as it is so delightfully called, will be disqualified if the result of that incident touches the plate or table. After the contest is over, eaters can dispose of the food however they'd like, although some contests have a post-binge wait period. This isn't college; the competitors don't show up just for the food. The winner out of the dog-downing competitors will take home $10,000. Want to bet on it? That can be done. You can also bet on if PETA will interrupt the contest or not or if there will be a “reversal of fortune.” One thing that's a sure winner, Nathan's will continue their annual tradition of donating 100,000 hot dogs to the Food Bank of New York. After no fans last year (and an awkwardly quiet competition), the crowd might be just what 13-time champion Joey Chestnut needs to beat his record of 75 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes. He is one of 18 men to compete for the mustard belt. Chestnut also holds the record for the most hard-boiled eggs eaten in 10 minutes at 151. Don't worry, this sport isn't only for the boys. Miki Sudo has won for seven straight years on the women's side, but she will not attend this year as she's pregnant with her first child. So while the men's competition is pretty much a lock for Joey Chestnutt, the women's side is wide open for any of the 10 competitors to win. Only two women, Sudo and Sonya Thomas. have won the competition since it started in 2011. You can catch the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest at 11 am EST on July 4 on ESPN. The contest will occur amidst stifling humidity and a massive crowd at Maimonides Park, which is steps away from Nathan's flagship store on Surf and Stillwell Avenues. For residents and visitors on Coney Island, the date is synonymous with the nationally televised Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest, a.k.a. the “Super Bowl of competitive eating.” The annual frankfurter consumption extravaganza even has its own “Magic versus Bird”: Japan’s Takeru “Kobi” Kobayashi and Californian Joey Chestnut. Their rivalry is deeper than cooked franks and water-drenched buns. Kobi and Joey’s competition is the stuff of vintage sporting drama, hot dogs and all, tackling personal challenges and questions about what it means to be an “American hero.” In this documentary, filmmaker Nicole Lucas Haimes analyzes competitive eating’s most storied pair through lively and candid interviews with both competitors. She approaches an event that—let’s be frank—isn’t taken seriously by most people with earnestness and wide-eyed fascination, constructing both an insightful primer on a niche sport and an endearing humanization of two unconventional athletes.” The film is currently listed at 77 minutes, which means it would fit into a 90 minute window with commercials when it airs on ESPN. There have been a few installments that have premiered at Tribeca or other film festivals before airing on ESPN, including Catching Hell, which debuted at Tribeca in 2011.
