Picking up right where we left off, our discussion/debate on FF1 and all of its features, quirks, and characteristics continues.  It's one of those games, I think anyone who has a memory of it, has some things really embedded into their brain from it.  It's such a memorable title.  I know I am biased but thankfully I get to write this, so I guess that's that.  Hopefully some of you have fond memories of this title, and even if you don't, you can always side with Joe and hate it.  Don't miss the thrilling conclusion of RGR's coverage of Final Fantasy 1 on NES.

Every cinema goer knows the Fast & Furious franchise.  You may love it, you may hate it, but in terms of longevity, few films can boast a life span of 20 years (FF1 released 22/06/01), with the same characters covering as many films (10 as of next week). The Fast series has always entertained us.  The kids love it.  Yes there are plot holes and issues with physics and what the human body can ACTUALLY do, and there are issues with how the female characters are developed, but for big, fun stupid movies, there really is nothing like them.  They go big so you don't go home - its been like that since five.In this episode I chose ten categories and we discuss things like best car, best villain, best supporting character, Nieve adds best nude male scene, best bromance and as usual we go off topic and talk about using rats for torture. What scenes put a MASSIVE smile on our face.  What brought us to tears.  What made us go WOW, and what made us go NO WAY IS THAT POSSIBLE.Listen in and enjoy!!Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/kwawwpodcast)

We record this show a quarter mile at a time. ‘The Fast The Furious’ (2001) is many things, from macho car-obsessed eye-feast to an incredibly of-its-time, no-holds-barred intro to what would become a massive and hugely popular mega-franchise. Are we using too many hyphens? It’s a high-octane, family-focused joyride on the mean streets of LA, with enough expensive metal to make Andrew Carnegie blush. Vin Diesel and Paul Walker are the first of many in a stacked cast whose pure charisma drives these movies beyond what they may seem at first glance. Matt, our resident Fast franchise expert and longtime friend, joins us for this and subsequent FFFF episodes (that’s Frames and Fools and Fast and Furious). Shift into first like you mean it and pop off the line for FF1! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/framesandfools/message

First off, a disclaimer: this isn't a political show. We've been interviewing local musicians since 2012, and even when we stray from that topic, it's always tied in to the local scene, and this is no exception. This week, our guests are **Omar Kinnarath** and **Ryan Nash** of **[Fascist-Free Treaty 1](https://www.facebook.com/fascistfree1/) ** (or **FF1** ). They're veterans of the local punk/hardcore scene (Ryan is a regular guest on the show with his band **[Union Stockyards](https://unionstockyards.bandcamp.com/)** ) who are leading the fight against racism on the streets of Winnipeg. We talk about how coming up in the local punk scene helped solidify their political views and values, and how the inclusive attitude of Winnipeg's DIY punk rock continues to inform what they do. When I teased this episode a few weeks ago, I got a raft of negative comments on social media from white nationalists, Islamophobes, and assorted 'alt-right' types -- many of whom weren't even _Canadian_ , let alone from Winnipeg -- so this is just a heads-up that there's going to be zero tolerance for that shit going forward. If you don't like some of the ideas floated in this episode, take it up directly with FF1. This podcast, and its associated social media, is not a forum to spread hatred. It's an interview show. About music. Next week there's a completely apolitical discussion about jazz, for example. Any bullshit comments will be deleted and commenters will be banned and reported. With that out of the way... in fitting with our usual format, there are songs sprinkled throughout the episode. These are all from local bands (including **[Propagandhi](https://propagandhi.com/)** , **[I-Spy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXgGqYpZzVg), [Rogue Nation](https://www.facebook.com/Rogue-Nation-143067199084050/)** and **[Whole Lotta Milka](http://www.unionlabelgroup.com/bands/64/whole-lotta-milka/)** ) and all deal with the topics being raised on the episode.

We talk about how coming up in the local punk scene helped solidify their political views and values, and how the inclusive attitude of Winnipeg's DIY punk rock continues to inform what they do.

Ultima Final Fantasy | The Ultimate Final Fantasy Podcast

This week, we review the second to last expansion to Final Fantasy XI:Seekers of Adoulin. Enjoy!   Released March 27th in 2013, Seekers of Adoulin was the last full expansion for FFXI.   It featured many new areas in FFXI, all surrounding the Nation of Adoulin and the outlying Ulbuka Territory, and added jobs the jobs Geomancer and Rune Fencer.   Gameplay-wise Adoulin added a lot of things such as Colonization, Coalition Assignments, Reives, Skirmish and Delve.   The music was written entirely by Naoshi Mizuta, who created 9 new tracks for the expansion.   Story   The nation of Adoulin, which has been locked off for a long time, opens it doors to adventurers in order to settle the Ulbukan hinterland. On the way to the new nation, Nooborious meets a young woman named Arciela (our new expansion heroine). She tells Noobrious to register as a pioneer with the Pioneers’ Coalition, and the expansion begins. Talk about the Impermatures and Adoulin Reives. It turns out Arcelia the sister of the Grand Chancellor of Adoulin and a descendant of the former royal line, which means nothing yet.       The Pioneers' Coalition tells Nooborious to uncover the secrets of the leafkin (a race of leafy beings), and meets with Teodor, a mysterious man clad in black who says that the sword carried by Arciela is the key to meeting the leader of the leafkin (known as the Otharsyne, the sword had been passed down the royal line and represents the will of the Founder King). Teodor explains that after King August (the founder guy) subjugated Ulbuka years ago, he made a promise to never tread upon the land. The Otharsyne it turns out, could allow the king to defy the pact he had made. In an attempt to borrow the sword, for, you know, stuff…. the Adventurer finds Arciela and she decides to go looking for the leafkin in the Yorcia Weald where they had been seen before. There, they meet Rosulatia (the mega-leafkin) who explains that danger is coming to Ulbuka. It turns out that the world tree “Yggdrasil” had existed in ancient times on the continent of Rhazowa and that a second tree had been planted by King August in Ulbuka. However, when the Orcish Empire fucked up the world tree in Rhazowa, its connection with the tree in Ulbuka was spoiled. When Arciela asks how they can help, Rosulatia replies that they should ask the king, and gifts a pome to the Adventurer. After this, we get some scenes of civil war between the factions that oppose adoulin expansion, and those who are for it. Luckily the group that is about to kill Arcelia is stopped just in time (the fight in the waterways). During a council meeting, it’s explained by Arcelia that Councelor Ygnas had turned into a leafkin who can no longer communicate with humans (Cid in FF9). However, a pome that the Adventurer receives from Rosulatia allows Ygnas to speak directly into the Adventurer's mind… For reasons, I guess.   So they try to cure Ygnas with an Exorsist named Ingrid, but that doesn’t work. Soon Ygnas’s voice fades from Nooborious’s head, but not before Ygnas warns him of terrible things coming to the land. Suddenly a girl named Nyline comes wandering through the woods as if possessed, and it turns out she had started acting that way after her father gave her a random stone. When she randomly takes off, Noobrious has to find her. She passes out and little fairy things escape from her stone. Suddenly another girl disappears, Arcelia, who was apparently attacked by some tiger. Luckily, she’s fine, and the Tiger is actually protecting her. It turns out that a jealous Ingrid (the exorcist) attacked her and used a soul syphon to take her soul. Ingrid flees, but is saved by Nooborious. Embarrassed by her behaviour, Ingrid releases the soul and is quickly forgiven.       Days later, after a few more people disappear in the woods, Arcelia tells Nooborious that she believes that they should go to the summit of Mt. Kamihr to talk to a dragon there.   The dragon’s name is Sajj’aka, who explains that seals on the pass are beginning to awaken, and that “Hades” will return.   Our heroes try to get a new world tree sapling to plant in the labyrinth that holds Hades, and after some annoying quests with some dragon scales and the search for Leafallia, the tree is successfully planted.   After some more chaos in Adoulin, with a major leader who went missing now dead, the Rala Waterways are disrupted and the seal to King August’s grave was destroyed.   Unfortunately this guarantees two things. First, Hades will return. And Second, this fucking asshole Balamore (who seems like Hades right-hand-man) shows up like a more twisted Kefka, who you fight to get information about Hades from.       So the monsters have increased (FF1), noxious gasses are seeping out of the forests, and now our heroes must go to the depths of Adoulin to stop Hades.   Teodore, who came from Hades’s world challenges Noobriousious to a fight, looses, and reveals that Hades and him came from another world where Hades was able to use his lust for power to basically become a god, before being sealed in Adoulin.   After a fight with some crazy people popping in and out of different dimensions, our heroes defeat Hades, and Arcelia takes the throne of Adoulin.   Legacy   Since seekers of Adoulin, FInal Fantasy XI began experiencing some serious nerfing, which was meant to get in new players for the game, and allowed it to compete more with casual MMORPGs such as World of Warcraft. Unfortunately, this had the unintended consequence of making people who were especially fond of the challenge aspect of 11 leave the game and complain to us about the changes to the game on Twitch.   For a few years, players thought that Seekers would be the final expansion, but a partial expansion, one that concludes the FF11 saga would soon come in the form of Rhapsodies of Vanadiel. The Final Fantasy Series, Part 1 In this episode: Our history with Final Fantasy! Beej actually started with FF1, but was so young that he didn’t understand much of what he was doing. He played IV and VI (II and III to you 90s-kid Americans out there) from the video store over and over and over and over again. Void was the opposite side of the Final Fantasy-loving 90s kid, and he started the series with FFVII which brought him into the broad, magical world of jRPGs, summon magic, and random encounters. He, though, went hardcore and did a full mainline Final Fantasy playthrough--going from FF1 to FFXIV in order. Speaking of, we go through the entire Final Fantasy series, giving you listeners a survey of the highpoints regarding each one. FFI - pick a party of classes and level them up FFII - the more you use a skill the more it levels up (skills level up individually) FFIII - first job system FFIV - first real narrative with jobs uniquely tied to characters for the first time FFV - first in-depth job system FFVI - first in-depth, truly mature story / first extra characters you can miss / semi-open approach to world 2 FFVII - genre defining for 3D jRPGs. It was 3D! The game where cutscenes began to blow us away FFVIII - Junction system, which is very controversial and breakable FFIX - Throwback to high fantasy of FFI-FFV (Look at these hi-res images of this game. They’re so pretty!) FFX - First PS2 game.  Graphics were amazing. First FF with voice acting, if you can call it that (haha!) FFXI - First MMO FF (definitely not a single player game. It had a huge emphasis on being part of a group.) FFXII - Feels like a single player MMO.  Gambit system.  Vaan (and Penelo) are not the protagonists of the story despite being the main characters.  Basch and Ashe are. Same world as Tactics (Ivalice), only one that is set in another one, right? FFXIII - Super linear.  Amazing visuals again.  This is where the series started to lose hardcore fans.  Made 2 more follow up spin off games. FFXIV - Second MMO Final Fantasy.  Really good FF.  True to the series roots. Can be played pretty much as a single-player FF game if you want it to be, but the story isn’t as in-depth and intricate. We want to hear from you! Send us your questions and thoughts on the series! Weekly Geekery Beej - Final Fantasy IX on PS Vita / Bruce the dinosaur cake / Chrono Cross article Void - Hearthstone Karazhan Wing 3 / End of my gaming backlog, which made me subscribe to Gamefly (already tried two and sent back / Harry Potter audiobooks / Evergreen games (Hearthstone and Overwatch) / tiny shoulder pig Be sure to subscribe to the Geek to Geek Podcast your favorite podcast app, drop a review so we know how we’re doing, and feel free contact us via email at geektogeekcast@gmail.com or @geektogeekcast on Twitter with any comments, questions, or suggestions for the show. It's time for our Nobuo Uematsu spotlight episode. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the tunes!   PART I   With the exception of Hironobu Sakaguchi, there really isn’t any other name more synonymous with Final Fantasy than that of “Nobuo Uematsu”. Composing either all or part of 12 of the 15 main-series final fantasy games, much of the feel and atmosphere, that visceral, unspeakable part of us that sings when we are reminded of a Final Fantasy, may be the melodies that Nobuo Uematsu is responsible for. With numerous remixes, live symphonic performances, and the original scores themselves, fans of Final Fantasy have relived their FF adventures through listening to the plethora of material presented by Nobuo Uematsu through their headphones while they do homework, clean their homes, or drive to work. There is no doubt that without the contribution that Nobuo Uematsu has brought to the series, much of our experiences with these games would be dramatically altered from what they are. Where would Star Wars be if it weren’t for John Williams? You could ask the same of Uematsu.   Note: You will be hearing a large number of remixes through this two-part Nobuo Uematsu spotlight, as well as some concert performances, and tracks from the games themselves. The youtube links for all of the pieces will be provided in the descriptions, and we ask that if you like a particular piece to consider following the links and supporting the artists that keep the music of Uematsu alive.   Let’s get to it…   [small interlude with the main FF theme]   Nobuo Uematsu was born on March 21st, 1959 in Kochi, Japan. Inspired by the music of Elton John, he taught himself how to play the piano at the age of 12.   Shortly after graduating from Kanagawa University, Uematsu began writing music for commercials before being hired by Square Co. in 1986 to work on video game scores.   For 18 years Uematsu worked at Square, creating over 30 video game and movie soundtracks before separating from square in 2004 to become an independant contracter.   We’re gonna pay special attention to these years, as that’s where most of the Final Fantasy meat is at; but first, let’s rewind the clock back to his very first game score, co-written with Takashi Uno, this is a piece from “Cruise Chaser Blassy” called “Space”:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcmWisadc9Q   1986 would end up being a very busy year for rookie Nobuo, the next game he’d work on would be his first that he’d compose entirely on his own called “Alpha”, although we can’t seem to find any tracks for that game, his next would be a NES classic called “King’s Knight”. Here’s the theme from that game:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBui5DMZAVs   December of 1986 would feature his next soundtrack, that for Suishō no Dragon. Here’s the intro track for that game:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MIhB2mgcRA   The 3-D Battles of WorldRunner would push Square’s stereoscopic 3D technology to the limits and with the music of this game, we would see a side of Nobuo we hadn’t seen before, you could call it “super pep” here’s a cover of the main theme:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDZhruBVzP4   Another soundtrack was made for a little piece of software called “Apple town story”, and he would follow that up with “Mystery Quest” (not to be confused with Mystic Quest, a later game). Here’s a taste:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_qIcMhmXJ0   With few exceptions, most of the pre-FF games Nobuo Uematsu worked on have been forgotten, with the most notable detail about them being that they had soundtracks created by Uematsu. Nearly forgotten games such as Genesis, Alien 2, and Cleopatra no Maho, which were next up in line, could probably be seen as pot boilers for what was to come, quick cash grabs before Square’s impending doom in 1987. Here’s a taste from the 26/40-famitsu scored Cleopatra game:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGnh3e6wNdo   Rad racer would come next, notable for being one of the few racing games on the NES. This is a track called “Grand Canyon”:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpzbHphuVrk&index=4&list=PL0D98064E11A94D91   One of the first dating sim games would follow (I sense desperation) with the long-winded mother fucking title of a game called “Nakayama Miho no Tokimeki High School”, that Nobuo would co-score with Toshiaki Imai. And the last game Nobuo would score, a sequel of sorts to 3D worldrunner would be that of “JJ”. But ya’ll wanna get to the good stuff. I can feel it. Fine. His last effort of 1987 would be the soundtrack for Final Fantasy.   This now-legendary soundtrack featured both the arpeggio prelude and main theme that would be staples in the series to come. He remarked once that he felt kind-of embarrassed as he hadn’t worked all that hard on pieces that would be hummed by gamers around the world. This is one of the best songs in the game. Here’s a cover for “Matoya’s theme”:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdRMfqWNJok   Beginning in 1988, Nobuo would slow down his work to 1 to 2 games per year, primarily being that of the scores for Final Fantasy games. Occasionally though, he would take a detour. Here’s a track from “Hanjuku Hero”:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebIzHCFGxTc   His other score of 1988 would be for the sequel to FInal Fantasy, Final Fantasy 2. Much of the original score from FF1 would make it into FF2 for our enjoyment, along with some original works. Here’s a remix of “Rebellion”:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nU06ttrbqcM   For some reason Square thought it would be a really awesome idea to make a game based on the book Tom Sawyer, but if there were someone who could make a killer soundtrack for such a game, it would be Uematsu for Square’s Tom Sawyer in 1989.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auLBLk4ibAk   Ha ha jk   Here’s a real piece from the game. An effort from Nobuo to make a soundtrack more, as he calls it “scenic”:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2uUfAcF7T8&list=PLfUvsxulQQd-zuBTVzmYzj1RvOArPnnEp&index=1   The Final Fantasy Legend, or as it was originally called in Japan, “Makai Toushi Saga” (the reason it’s not counted as an FF game in our podcast) would round out 1989 with this Game Boy classic and square’s first platinum hit at the time with 1.37 million copies sold. Nobuo remarked that he had difficulty coming up with the 16 tracks for the game because of the hardware limitations of the game boy. Despite this, the game would have a soundtrack considered as classic for many of its fans. Here’s a remix of “Battle With Creator”:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXTMQ4APiwg   Final Fantasy 3 would follow in 1990, and with this game came the fucking awesome piece “Crystal Tower” check out this power-metal remix:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lT8humrSC2c   Considered one of the best Racing Games of the NES, Rad Racer II would be yet another game graced with Uematsu’s presence, as his 11th game score. Here’s a super upbeat cover of Gumball Crash titled “Fire in the Tires”:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=trFfjaNtySI The second Saga game or “Final Fantasy Legend 2” would come next, and would eventually be heralded as 97th of the greatest games of all time in a poll by Famitsu. For this game, Kenji Ito would assist in composition. Here’s a piano cover of “Save the World”:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCLU6V6coqg   Nobuo’s first masterpiece would come on the SNES and would be his only game of 1991. He’s called the composing process for the game one of the hardest in his career.  Staying up with the sound team deep into the night, the music would be so heralded that one of the tracks from the game would go on to be official music curriculum for japanese school students. That game would be Final Fantasy IV, and that song would be “Theme of Love”:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfV0YlvBpvE   And, how can we call ourselves fans of FF IV if we don’t include Fabul’s Theme?   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlklyML9Pu8   Nobuo wouldn’t write anything for Romancing Saga, although for it and its sequel he would assist with the arrangement, his next mega-work would be Final Fantasy V. FF5 would require Uematsu to create over 56 tracks, a favorite of the game being the song “Dear Friends”, which Nobuo has performed on countless occasions:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgBccEEtu64   The next track is featured during the fight with one of the series’ most beloved opponents; Gilgamesh. Here’s a cover of “Clash on the Big Bridge”:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQGcv3encAo   We could legiimately make one of these entire episodes about FF6, but we’re gonna go ahead with the two big tracks from that masterpiece of a game. Here’s an amazing metal cover of “Dancing Mad”   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqPP9tp6PKo   And let’s finish it off with a favorite of ours, Terra’s theme. Join us next week for part 2.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oG-Q9ELmGpw

Lets open our Bibles up this morning to Acts 27. The series were beginning today is called, Is There Life After GM? The answer, of course, is yes. We are still praying for a miracle. Were still praying that some solution could be reached, of course; but this is so significant because as a community, we have heard about the rumor or the possibility of this happening for decades. When I came to town in 1990, it was something you heard almost every year-that GM is going to shut down; GM is going to shut down. The rumors would not always be true. We would all kind of breathe a sigh of relief knowing that they would resurface again down the road. However, this time it appears as though its going to happen. What I want to do is minister to the anxieties and fears that we might be experiencing right now because if this happens, it means a loss of thousands of jobs in our community. We need to be on the cutting edge of that as a church, saying, Well, heres what the Word of God says. Heres what we can offer as hope to people who are struggling with those kinds of fears and anxieties. [As a church we] also [need] to put together a resource, a tool that six months from now, a year from now, two years from now, when we feel like theres somebody in our lives who would really benefit from this series [we will have it readily available]. Maybe they have lost their job at LSI, GM, Lear Seating or one of the companies. Maybe theyre just going through a loss because GM for us, if you dont work there or you dont work at one of the subsidies means loss. It means something that is a threat to us, something that we have feared that has finally come to pass. This week and next week, the topic is what do I do when the thing that I have feared happens? There are good fears, and there are bad fears. Good fear is not touching something thats hot or not getting too close to a cliff. When Im at the Grand Canyon, I can see just fine from back here, thank you. Thats wisdom; thats a good fear. Then there are fears that are not so good. The anxiety that builds up over what may or may not happen-thats the kind of fear that God doesnt want you to live in. Thats the kind of fear that if you live in it, it will make you physically ill; mentally unstable; deplete you spiritually. Thats the kind of fear that God always said, Do not be afraid, because He doesnt want us to live in that fear. It happens. Its a part of the human process. There are times we go through those periods, but God does not want us to live there. God wants us to live in faith; so were going to take a look at the Apostle Paul, and were going to see what happened in his life and how he was able to stay in faith when all those around him were living in fear. Whats going on in Pauls life here is you know Paul is a seasoned traveler and a seasoned sailor-greatest missionary of all time, always going around the world proclaiming the Gospel where Christ had not been preached about yet. He had been on ships many times and gone to many places, but this one was different. This time was different: the same salty taste in the air; the same crispness as fall approached; seagulls flying; the blue Mediterranean Sea: all the sights and sounds he was familiar with. This time instead of embarking on an exciting adventure to preach the Gospel, he was on his way to Rome to testify before Caesar about his faith. His fate was unknown. Would he be imprisoned? Would he be killed? As Paul embarked on that journey, all these questions were with him. Some companions were with him; Luke was with him; Aristarchus was with him; possibly others were there to support him on this journey. Many commentators have said that possibly these men sold themselves into slavery to be able to go along with Paul. Well never know for sure, but this was a mission or a trip in which prisoners were there. They were all being brought to Rome. Normally, prisoners dont speak. Youre a prisoner; you dont have any rights. Paul had earned such favor with the centurion, the Roman soldier who was in charge of the ship, that he allowed Paul the right to speak. Paul began to admonish them. In Acts 27, he had been on the sea many times. He knew that you didnt sail in the fall in the Mediterranean Sea. Many a ship had ended up in a graveyard in northern Africa. In fact it was kind of like the ancient Bermuda Triangle; if you sailed in the fall on the Mediterranean Sea into the Adriatic Sea, the current and the winds would push you into the rocks of northern Africa. Thats where you would parish, and he knew that. It was the stuff of legends, the stuff of folklore. He is given an audience, and he speaks. He says, Its not wise for us to sail at this time. Lets stay here. Theyre in a place called Fair Haven, a small port in the island of Crete. He said, Its not ideal, the winter here, but its a whole lot better than perishing at sea. Paul says, I want you to know that if you embark on this journey… The feast had already come and passed. It was now October; October was not a good time to sail. Paul says, If we sail right now, its going to mean the loss of your cargo. Its going to mean the loss of your ship, and it probably will mean the loss of lives at sea. Its not worth it. Lets stay here, cope the best we can and well leave again in the spring. The Centurion listened to Paul. Then he went and talked to the ships captain and the people in charge of the cargo. What do you think they said? Money talks, right? Theyve got wheat; theyve got corn from Egypt; they want to get to Rome and sell it to make a profit. There are jobs at stake; the livelihood is at stake. Besides that, the weathers not bad. It seems to be a nice breeze, and Finix (sounds like Phoenix) is not that far away; so that was their goal-to get to the next port of call, which is Finix-not Arizona-but Finix, Crete. They said, Well winter there. Its a bigger city. Winters a long time. Well have ample supply, so they did not head Pauls admonition. They got on the ship and sailed out to sea. Not long after they were at sea, a noreaster came, a storm of tremendous winds and waves. It just began to damage that boat. It just began to scare those men. They actually had some cables and physically wrapped them around the boat to hold it together. Otherwise, it would have just broken apart right there in the middle of the sea. The winds were so great, they couldnt even sail. They simply let the winds push them along the sea. This was a destitute situation. The Bible says they began to throw out cargo. I mean quicker than Brett Favre can come back from retirement, they were throwing things out right and left. Anything that wasnt nailed down, they were throwing it out. They were throwing out some of the grain as well. They were throwing out the ships tackle. Just about everything was fair game. They were throwing it out trying to make the ship lighter. Paul gets up to preach. Really the meat of the text, the heart of the text, is the verses were going to look at right now beginning with Verse 20. Lets take a look. The storm is at sea. The worst thing that could happen when youre at sea is the ship goes under-the ship breaks apart. Verse 20 (of Acts 27, page 1109 of pew Bibles) says-remember now Luke is writing; Luke the author is with Paul, so hes writing in the first person. He says we because hes there. When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days and the storm continued raging, we finally gave up all hope of being saved. If he says we gave up, that is an inclusive term, isnt it? Hes saying all of us gave up hope of being saved, so who would that include? Paul. Paul would be among those who at that point in time had entered into despair and given up hope. You know, even if youre a Godly person and you go through a storm, if you take your eyes off where theyre supposed to be and whom theyre supposed to be on, you too can lose hope and faith. Pauls not going to stay there; but for a time, Paul had given despair, according to Luke, of his very life. After the men had gone a long time without food, Paul stood up before them and said: Men, you should have taken my advice not to sail from Crete; then you would have spared yourselves this damage and loss. Some have thought, well maybe Paul is doing like a na-na-na-na-na kind of a thing, an I told you so. You didnt listen to me kind of a lecture. I really think what Pauls doing is trying to give Crete some credibility to what hes about to say. Hes saying, Listen, some of you didnt listen to me. All you know is Im a prisoner, but you didnt listen to me the first time, and look what happened. So, Im asking you-Im reminding you of that-so youll listen to me; youll heed my warning this time around. He said, But now I urge you to keep up your courage; because not one of you will be lost; only the ship will be destroyed. This is kind of a good news/bad news kind of a thing. Nobody is going to die, but the ships going to be destroyed. You start thinking about it; you go, Wait a second. Im on the ship. The ships at sea. The ships going to be destroyed, yet Im going to be okay. This is kind of a paradox. This is not good news. A pilot gets on the intercom in the airplane and says, Listen. Good news and bad news. Bad news is were going to crash. The good news is everybodys going to survive. That's not the greatest of news. The ships going to be destroyed, but youre going to make it. What happened to Paul to bring him from despair to hope? From fear to faith? What happened? It says in Verse 23, he says, Last night, an angel of the God whose I am and whom I serve stood beside me and said, Do not be afraid, Paul. Step number one-action step number one by Paul, and if you can do it, its great. Its to have an angel come and speak to you-Gods Will. That's always good. So step number one-if you can do it, have an angel appear to you and tell you everythings going to be okay. Just remember that. If you cant do that, I have some more steps, but thats always a good one if you can do that. He said, Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand trial before Caesar; and God has graciously given you the lives of all who sail with you. So keep up your courage, men, for I have faith in God that it will happen just as He told me. Thats a definition of faith, right there. Paul says, I believe that God will do what He said He will do. You want a definition of faith, thats it. Trust in God; believe that God will do what He said He will do regardless of the circumstances that surround. Nevertheless, we must run aground on some island. I dont know where; I dont know how; I dont know when, but he reiterates a second time theyre going to crash. Three action steps that Paul took to get out of fear and into faith, out of anxiety and into trust: number one, Paul recognized the personal care of God. Notice in Verse 23 the intimate language that Paul uses. He says an angel of the God whose I am-whose I am; I belong to Him. I am His. Jesus is not just a theological figure to Paul. Hes not some creed or some doctrine. He is His Lord and Savior. He knows Jesus, and Jesus knows Him. Paul remembers that. You and I, when we encounter the storms of our lives [need] to remember that God is not ignorant of the storms that were not in. God is aware of our situation, and God knows us. Whose I am; I belong to Him. This brings to mind a passage in 1 Peter 5. If you could keep your place in Acts, turn to 1 Peter 5. One of my favorite verses in all of Scripture-especially as it pertains to the subject matter-is found here. Verse 6 (page 1203), Peter writes and says, Humble yourselves, therefore, under Gods mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you. By the way, that word cast; you know I live in Wisconsin, so I know there are outdoorsmen here and fishermen here. I have to remind you that that word cast isnt the kind of cast where you throw it out and you reel it back in. Some of you like to practice that kind of casting. You know what Im talking about. You cast it out and reel it back. Anybody here ever do that? A couple of you; the rest of you arent being very honest with me this morning. You cast it out, and you reel it back. Its not that kind of cast. Its the kind of cast where you throw a rock, and you let it go. He says, Cast your anxiety upon me because I care for you. Im aware of the storm. Im aware of the situation that you are in. One of the ways we cast our anxiety upon the Lord is to be honest about it. When Jesus was in the Garden of Gethsemane feeling anxious about the cross, He would say, Father, if it be Thy will, let this cup pass from Me, but nevertheless let Thy will be done. Its not faith to go through something and pretend like youre not going through it. Dont be in denial about what youre going through. If youre struggling with anxiety or fear, the way to get rid of it is to confess faith, but its also to acknowledge I dont want to stay here, God. Heres what Im going through. Heres what Im facing. Heres what Im coping with. Get it out so you can get rid of it. One of my favorite movies, the series, is Rocky. Ive seen all 22 Rocky movies. I liked all of them but the fifth one. The fifth one was not that good. The last one was very good. This particular scene were going to watch is from Rocky III. Rocky, I believe, is going to fight Mr. T., Clubber Lang. He just lost his heart; he is just ready to quit. His wife, Adrienne, is going to confront him about quitting because hes never quit before. Lets go ahead and watch this scene from the movie. Get your popcorn out, and lets watch. Lets go back to 1 Peter 5. Its part of human experience-to have fear in a fearful situation. When the angel comes to Paul and says, Dont be afraid, what was Paul? Why would you say dont be afraid unless you are… Afraid. Paul was afraid. Many great women and men of God have been afraid, but God doesnt want you to stay there. Part of getting rid of that is just to confess it. You say, Lord, I want to confess this. I want to get rid of this fear, this anxiety that Im feeling. Heres what Im going through. You cast it on Him. Cast your anxiety on Him because He cares for you. God doesnt want you to live there. Its not something you keep. Its not something you reel back. Cast it upon Him. Tell Him what youre going through because He cares for you. So you say, Well, you dont know what Im going through. Its easy just to say cast your cares. Its just kind of an easy thing to say there, but its easier said than done. I wish Peter could be in my shoes and face what Im facing. The truth of the matter is you wouldnt have wanted to have been in Peters shoes right now. The truth of the matter is that this letter was written in 64 A.D. You know whats going on in history? Whats going on in Rome? Who is in control and power in 64 A.D.? Its Nero, and hes nuts. He has a vendetta against Christians. Hes using Christians as scapegoats. Im not going into details here because there are children present, but he does some despicable acts, deplorable acts, barbaric acts against Christians. Its one thing to execute; its another thing to torture, mame and murder the way Nero did. Some of the people that Peter writes to are people who are facing this tyranny-this tyrant in Rome by the name of Nero. In fact, 2 Peter, 2 Timothy and 2 Peter are both testamental books, meaning they were the last will and testament of their authors, Paul and Peter. They were both written about the same time. Shortly after that, church historians tell us that both Peter and Paul were martyred under the reign of Nero. He writes to Christians, Its one thing to think about losing your job or the struggling economy; its quite another thing to face losing your life in this manner. Peter says to those Christians, Cast your care on Him. Verse 9 (of 1 Peter 5, page 1203), Resist him. Were talking about Satan. Resist him, standing firm in your faith because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings. And heres your promise, friends. And the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, and I wish that part wasnt there. That's not a great promise, but there are times when God does allow storms in our lives. The storm will not defeat you; the storm will not conquer you. You will overcome the storm because you are in Christ. After awhile, he says, He Himself, notice the personal care. God Himself, He himself, will restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To Him be the power forever and ever. Amen. Was Paul stronger in his faith when he emerged from that storm at sea? Absolutely, he was stronger. God Himself, that's His promise. Friends, what you need to do, not only remember the personal care of God, but focus on the promise of God-not the circumstances that are around you. You focus on the negative reports that are around you, the negative people that are around you, the adverse circumstances that are around you; the next thing you know you go from faith to fear. Youll find yourself starting to go under, just like Peter when he tried to walk on the water. He took his eyes off of Christ. You know what it says in Verse 23 back in Acts 27? Turn to Verse 23. Peter was speaking, and he said, Last night an angel of the God whose I am and whom I serve stood beside me and said, Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand trial before Caesar. That's not the first time that Paul heard those words, You must stand trial before Caesar. Do you know where Paul first heard those words? Not from the angel, but from Jesus Himself. In the Book of Acts 23:11, Paul had just finished testifying in front of the Sanhedrin. He was concerned about his future, and Jesus appeared. It says, The following night the Lord stood near Paul and said, Take Courage! As you have testified about Me in Jerusalem, so you must also testify in Rome. Jesus Himself said those words to Paul, You will testify to me in Rome. Now remember in Verse 20, Luke told us that everybody had given up all hope of being saved. So Paul had taken his eyes off the ball. Hed taken his eyes off the promise for a moment. He began to look on the circumstances that were around him because either Jesus was going to see him safely through that storm and testify in Rome, or Jesus lied and Paul was going to parish at sea. Either Christ was going to keep His promise, or He was not going to keep His promise. Paul should have known that even though it looked terrible, it looked like theyre either going to starve to death or parish at sea, Jesus had promised he was going to go to Rome; but Paul took his eyes off the promise and put them on the storm. Even a good person, even a Godly person; if theyre not careful can do that. Thats why Peter said in 1 Peter 5, Be sober and be alert. Be aware of whats going around you. Be aware and be alert. What happens when you take your eyes off the promise? You panic, right? You panic. Look at these guys in Verse 27. It was the fourteenth night. Can you imagine two weeks at sea, and now theyre making progress? Theyve gone from the Mediterranean Sea to the Adriatic Sea. Theyre starting to approach; theyre making some headway; and land is approaching. This is the island of Malta, although they dont know its Malta. They are now due south of Italy, quite a ways south by the way; but there is land approaching. Its a small island; they dont even know what it is. They take some measuring. Theyre 120 feet deep; then theyre 90 feet deep; land is getting closer. Its not a nice plush beach; there are jaded rocks. This is treacherous. They are going to crash into these rocks, and the sailors that are on board panic. They take their eyes off the promise that Paul had given. Paul said, Stay with the ship, and youll be okay. The angel of the God whose I am, whom I serve appeared to me. Not one life will be lost. These people take matters into their own hands, press the panic button and lower the lifeboat. Theyre going to get in the lifeboat and go off. There are times you and I think we know better, and were going to abandon ship. This waiting on God stuff? Too hard, too scary. I think I have a better way. You make that decision, that's the wrong decision to make. Paul saw what was going on and told the captain, If these men want to be saved-they want to live, they better not get in that boat. If they get in that boat and they go their own way, theyre going to parish. If they stay with the boat, theyre going to be saved. They listened to Paul, and they cut the cables. The dingy went out to sea. You and I have all pressed the panic button at some point in time. You know the panic button. When you take your eyes off the promise, and you start focusing on the storm, you start thinking of all the things that might go wrong-all the things that could go wrong; and then you go from there to all the things that youre certain will go wrong. You start to speak negative things instead of positive things. You start to lose faith and confidence in God, and you start to believe in the inevitable of the storm. I have a hobby, a sickness, since about age four: these old comic books I like to have around, so every year this is this big national convention in Chicago. I go and try to find some deals. I did it this year, but I did not want to miss Todd. Im glad I came back because I wanted to hear what he had to say about mentoring, and I wanted to be here for Missions weekend; so I was back and forth every day from Chicago. It was worth it; it was fantastic. While I was there, one of my friends [who was also there] was from New York. I was at his booth with him and his wife. We were the only ones there, just kind of relaxing. The show was just getting under way. He was looking for things that I might like. There was a comic there. Youre familiar with Fantastic Four; it was the first issue of that comic. It was battered up; it was not in that great of shape, but it was still worth several thousand dollars. He couldnt find it. He said, Wheres that FF1? I cant find it. He told his wife, It was here. It was just here. Where is it? She said, I dont know. Maybe you put it in the box. He starts looking through the boxes. At first he was pretty calm about it. Well, I put it here. I know I brought it with me. We were offering suggestions, Maybe its… No, its not in that box. I said, Well, listen. Obviously its someplace where its not, so we better look everywhere because if its somewhere where its not, that means its somewhere you dont expect it to be. Lets look here. I was just trying to be a voice of calm. He starts to get edgier. He starts panicking. Hes going through the boxes more furiously. Hes looking through the stacks more quickly, more hastily. Then he says, I know its gone. I know its gone! It was right here, and its gone! Its been taken! I know its been taken! I can feel it right here. Somebody took it! Somebody took it-I just know it! I just know it! I just know it! I said, Well, maybe its on the floor. Lets look at all the places it might be. Maybe it fell. Well, no, it didnt fall. It was right up here! It was right up here! Im trying to remain calm. I said, Maybe its behind one of the books. Maybe we should pull the books on your display down because its behind one of the books. At this point, he was just ignoring me. He was blocking everything out; he was shutting it down. Then he starts to get even more panicked, and he says, I remember when it happened. I remember when it happened. Yesterday, this guy reached across the table. I turned away, and thats when he took it! Thats when he took it! Its gone! Then he goes up to this display worth thousands of dollars, and he starts shoving the stuff off and onto the floor. Hes in a rage now. Hes just uncontrolled. He goes, Thats it. Were closing down. Were shutting down. This guy has to make thousands of dollars to break even. These booths arent cheap. Theres transportation and food to get there. Hes not thinking anymore with reason and logic. He is just throwing all this stuff down. There was a guy there that was ready to make a purchase, and he was kind of like, Ill come back another time (with a shaky voice); and walked away. As he was shoving all the books, there it is. There it is. He sees it behind another book, and he goes, Ahhh, and sits down. His wife says, Jeff told you to look behind the books. I dont want to hear it, Kathy! I dont know if youve ever heard an old married couple from the Bronx fight before, but its quite entertaining. You should charge admission for it. I thought about that, and I thought there have been times you and I have been there. We start off thinking, I wonder if this could happen. I wonder if that happened. We definitely take our eyes off the promise, and we start focusing on what might, what could. It goes from what might to could to probably and certainly will to definitely can and is going to happen. The next thing you know you find yourself pressing the panic button. We wont ask for a raise of hands, but some of you might have even done the tossing and throwing thing bit in your house, or as we call it a Jakey, a little fit, little tantrum. It turns out to be not as bad as you thought it was, right? So these guys, they see the rocks, they know the promise-promise, rocks! Promise, rocks! Lets get in the boat. They panic. Paul says, They have to remain in the promise. They stay in the boat; they stay with the promise. Notice where Pauls faith is: Pauls faith is not in the storm subsiding; its not in the ship holding together; its not in the centurion; its not in the captain; its not even in his own abilities to navigate or to swim. His faith and trust ultimately is completely in the promise, the character, the goodness of God. Thats where it needs to be, friends. Youre going through a loss for GM workers? We appreciate the leaders, the work of our government leaders to try to save it; our union leaders who are trying to save it; but our faith and hope ultimately is not in our leaders. Its not in the company; its not in the economy; its not in our own ingenuity or creativity; it is in the living God who has promised, I will see you through the storm. I will make you steadfast, establish you and make you firm in your faith. That is where your promise is, and you cannot take your eyes off the prize-no matter what the circumstances are around you. Paul knew that he was going to be delivered. He didnt know how. Were going to crash; Were going to run aground, but somehow, were going to be saved. Heres the amazing thing. Watch what happens. The worst thing that could happen at sea is for your boat to crash, so heres what happens. They cut lose the anchors, and they prayed for daylight. Thats an expression meaning many of them were trying to remain in faith, but they were just struggling with it. One of the gentlemen at the 8 oclock service shared with me that they found these anchors right off the coast of Malta recently in an archeological discovery. I told him to send me that information. I like reading about that sort of thing. On Malta, Paul is the man. They still talk about this shipwreck on that island. What happens is the bow of the boat, the front of the boat, gets caught in a sandbar. The waves are so ferocious and so relentless that now that the boat is stuck, it begins to break apart and crash. I could just hear the men going, Here it is! You told us we were going to be saved, and now the boat is coming apart under our feet. Were going to drown at sea! I dont care how good of a swimmer you are; if its you, the sea and the rocks, and thats all you have, you arent going to make it. God uses something that nobody thought of. God does something amazing. The boat breaks apart, 276 people, and becomes hundreds of life preservers floating in the water. Isnt that cool? The very thing that they thought would cause them to parish became the very thing that they held on to for God to deliver them. All of the sudden, there are 200, 300 life preservers floating in the water around them. They grabbed onto them and floated to security-to safety. Friends, sometimes we talk about GM, Oh, GM is going to go down. Were going to lose all these jobs. Sometimes the very thing that has caused us the great fear can be the very thing God uses to bring deliverance. I believe years from now, Janesville is going to be stronger-not weaker. Its not that we dont value GM; its not that we dont value the jobs we have, but Ill tell you what: what has made companies like LSI, Lear and GM successful in our community? Its not just because of the good products; its because of the hard workers. Its because of the work ethic, their knowledge, their coming to the job and doing it correctly, the education, the experience. We could take those same assets and use them in other areas, in other fields, in other jobs. Sometimes the best thing that can happen to you is the worst thing that you think can happen to you. God took the worst thing that could happen to them, and He turned it into the source of their blessing. I dont know what its going to look like for you when it comes, when that life preserver comes, but I guarantee you next time youre in the storm, you find yourself in the water, you trust the promise. You look for that life preserver. When you see it, youll recognize it. You hold on to it, and it will take you exactly where you need to go. You have to trust number one in the personal care of God, the God whose I am. God Himself will restore and establish you. Secondly, you have to trust in the promise, regardless of the circumstances, regardless of the negative reports. Trust in the promise-not in people, not in yourself. Thirdly, trust in His provision. God can provide for you in miraculous ways that you dont even see, that you cant even comprehend. They never dreamed in a hundred years that the very thing they were most afraid of would be the source of their rescue. Lets pray together, and well receive of the Lords Supper. Father, we thank You for the example in this story of Paul, this great man of God, and Luke-great man of God. Men of faith who for a period of time-even for a day or a moment of that day-had given up hope of being saved. Let that be something that causes us to be sober, to be alert. We should not become arrogant in ourselves, but we are confident in You. God, the storms of this life-the economy that were struggling with; some who are facing difficulties from the flood this past month; others might be facing health concerns; marriage concerns; financial storms, Lord we focus on that promise of 1 Peter 5:10. God Himself will come through that storm and strengthen us. Thank you, Father, for this story of inspiration, of hope and of courage. Lord, we want to stand in faith. We want to stand as Paul and say that we believe it will turn out exactly as You have said. We want to cast our anxiety and cast our fear upon You and not real it back. Leave it there that we might walk in faith and hope. In Jesus name, we pray, Amen.
