So this episode started with a Reddit post about a guy who thinks his poop smells like his patients' poop... and I wish I could say it gets less weird from there, but no—it really doesn't. Kristin and I spiral into the science (and total lack of science) behind smell memory, hospital food, and whether we're all just walking around slowly absorbing our work environments. Spoiler: if you're in ophthalmology, congrats—you're mostly scent-neutral. Unless you've ever used a slit lamp on someone mid-GI crisis. I also revisit 30 Days of Healthcare and question a few of my creative choices (including a weird little sketch about fixing healthcare with just vibes and prior auths). And because I clearly haven't suffered enough, we open up the brand new First Aid for Step 1 (2025 edition) and test how much I remember from med school. It's… not great. Takeaways: There's a Reddit post you can't unread—and now we all have Deja P. We may be slowly absorbing our patients… through scent. Kristin puts Will's med school knowledge to the test. It does not go well. Sneeze guards: good for spit, better for smell trauma. We're trying to make medical education funny again. Starting with capitation. When a frantic Kate Mitchell ran towards a remote police patrol, with her seemingly lifeless toddler in her arms, she'd already spent over thirty minutes performing CPR and battling poor mobile reception to emergency services. Along with her other son, Harry, and her father-in-law, Kate had made a desperate dash by car to meet the ambulance, knowing that every second counted if 16-month-old Darcy stood any chance of surviving his terrifying Tonic-clonic seizure. Minutes later, a pursuit-trained police officer was behind the wheel of the volunteer-run ambulance, racing the Mitchell family towards Albany - with lights and sirens blaring. Now, some three years on, the Darcy Effect is helping country families from across Australia, to navigate the often frightening and complex world of an unexpected or emergency medical crisis. And as for Darcy? The fit and currently seizure free four-year-old is keeping busy helping his Mum, to pack 'care packs' for other country families, who have suddenly found themselves a long way from home.***Thanks so much for listening to this episode of the Flying Doctor Podcast. Australia's 'Queen of Hearts' was born on the day when Dawn Beaumont brought her mother back to life. Even as her extensive, professional First Aid training kicked in - as Dawn calmly performed CPR on her mum in the middle of a crowded theatre foyer - the experienced health and safety manager grappled with the knowledge that her mother was having a potentially fatal heart attack. With a family history of coronary disease and obesely overweight and a smoker, Janet was (in her daughter's words) 'literally a ticking time bomb'. Thankfully, Janet survived her 2013 health emergency. And now, she's become an integral part of her daughter's epic Duathlon support crew - as Dawn takes on the world-record-breaking challenge of running and riding 20,000km in 200 days to raise 2 million dollars for the Heart Foundation and the RFDS in 2025. Because it takes a true, modern-day Warrior Woman to claim the title of Australia's Queen of Hearts.***Thanks so much for listening to this episode of the Flying Doctor Podcast. Episode 290 Mice have been found saving the lives of their cagemates by performing a resuscitation technique similar to CPR. After opening the mouth of an unconscious mouse, the “attending mouse” yanks up its tongue to clear the airways and dislodges anything that's stuck. This remarkable discovery shows that empathy and consolation behaviour is more widespread in mammals than we thought, and hints at a mouse theory of mind. Tiny, lab-grown bits of human brain are being combined to create something that resembles a more complete organ. This “multi-region brain organoid” contains 80 per cent of the cell types found in a 40-day-old fetal brain. The team behind it aims to study conditions like autism and schizophrenia - with some suggesting they could one day be used in artificial intelligence. But this all throws up major ethical issues…at what point do these brains start feeling pain, or gain consciousness? From wooden skyscrapers to wooden batteries, wood is being used in many innovative and surprising ways. Cross-laminated timber and densified wood are proving to be durable, sustainable alternatives to a range of other materials. And now a team has gone one step further, by creating a wood-based hair conditioner. But will this pitch black, funny smelling alternative catch on? Back to Basics: Get Home Bags – The Survival Pack You Need Episode Description: When disaster strikes and you're away from home, having a Get Home Bag (GHB) can be the difference between making it home safely or being stranded. In this episode of our Back to Basics series, we break down what a GHB is, why it's important, and exactly what you need to pack. We also cover how to build a Get Home Plan—because having the gear is only part of the equation. Whether it's a natural disaster, civil unrest, or transportation failure, you need to be prepared to move safely and efficiently. Listen now and make sure your GHB is ready before you need it. Episode Breakdown:
Talk Back to MeI find it unabashedly funny when people argue passionately over what they should or shouldn't train, especially when we all know neither party is practicing what they preach. The drama over such low hanging fruit cannot be allowed to go to waste, so in this episode we are addressing one formula for ensuring that you're excellent at the fundamentals, and capable in rare, but potentially disastrous situations. The 80/20 rule applies to more than just training, but in this case we are looking at it in a more narrow sense to improve the little time that we do have to get more done. Steve was in an accident back in 2019 in the Chamonix range in France. He was climbing with a friend, who also works on the Chamonix Rescue Helicopter Team. They got stuck in bad weather on the way down a route and ended up having to do an emergency bivi (without bivi gear) in a rapidly dug ice cave high up on the glacier. They learned a lot from this incident. Tune in this episode to hear more. This podcast is produced by Ashley Saupe. This podcast is sponsored by Rocky Talkie and LIVSN. Panic attacks can strike unexpectedly, leaving individuals grappling with intense fear and the urgent need to escape their current environment. Throughout our discussion, I share personal anecdotes, reflecting on my own experiences with panic attacks and the feelings of dread that can envelop an otherwise normal day. We explore what happens during a panic attack, emphasizing the physiological responses that can be misinterpreted as imminent danger. Recognizing that these feelings do not equate to actual threat is paramount in managing them effectively. I stress the importance of acknowledging the panic attack for what it is, rather than succumbing to a cascade of fearful thoughts. Riding out the wave of panic, allowing it to ebb without fighting it, is a powerful technique I encourage listeners to practice. The conversation then expands to practical strategies to mitigate panic when it arises. I outline four key components for an effective first aid kit: understanding the situation, exercising wise thought to counter fear, stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system, and embracing mindfulness. We highlight the importance of self-talk during panic moments, urging listeners to remind themselves that they are safe, and the situation will eventually pass. I explain how this cognitive awareness can significantly reduce the overwhelming impact of panic. #PanicAttacks, #StressManagement, #AnxietyRelief, #CalmMind, #MentalHealth, #RelaxationTechniques, #PanicAttackFirstAid, #AnxietyRecovery, #CopingStrategies, #ParasympatheticNervousSystem, #Mindfulness, #BreathingExercises, #PanicPrevention, #MentalWellness, #SelfCare, #StressReduction, #Healing, #CalmingMusic, #BuddhaBellyBreathing, #OvercomingFear Learn more about your ad choices.
