A new study suggests sugary fruit juices and fizzy drinks may be linked to a higher likelihood of strokes. The findings, from global research studies by University of Galway and McMaster University Canada, found that both fizzy ‘soda pop' beverages, either with sugar or artificially sweetened, increase stroke risk by 22%, and fruit juices by 37%. And bad news for coffee lovers, too: It was also found that drinking more than 4 cups of per day also appears to increase stroke risk. The good news is that those who enjoy sparkling water can sip easy, since this study refers specifically to sugary drinks.According to a survey, using an Android phone could be impacting your dating life. In a summer poll of 1,000 anonymous phone users by All About Cookies, 22% of iPhone users admitted they look down on those sending non-iMessage texts, and nearly 23% of iPhone users said finding out a potential romantic interest is an Android user would be a total dealbreaker. 31% of men said they'd swipe left on an Android user, while 16% of women felt the same. The same survey found that 52% of Android users have been made fun of for their device.Jungle TrailLessons LearnedUsing different camera angles.Using some of our new found knowledge for the shots. How impressive a smartphone camera can be. South Africa currently faces a dire health crisis. Diabetes now ranks as the second leading cause of death in South Africa after tuberculosis, with a concerning 25 000 deaths attributed to the disease in 2022. Diabetes affects 12 percent of the adult population in South Africa, wreaking havoc to the family’s livelihood and the individual’s health, workplace productivity, – as well as the national fiscus. Diabetes, on diagnosed patients alone, costs South Africa’s health system a whopping R2.7 billion. And this is where increasing the sugar tax from 10 to 20 percent would help. The Healthy Living Alliance (HEALA) still maintains that the South African government has an opportunity to curb the prevalence of NCDs in South Africa, including diabetes, obesity, and related health issues. Welcome to this instalment of Join the Docs, where your esteemed and shameless hosts, Nigel and Jonathan, tackle a topic that's been the butt of jokes since time began: the tuneful symphony of the human body, known as flatulence. In this gut-busting episode, The Docs delve deep into the bowels of science to unearth the root causes of gas. They uncover everything from the innocuous (like Thursday's bean dinner) to the more ominous rumblings that might signal serious health issues. Who could forget the famous farting figures like Dr. Methane? Our hosts share side-splitting (and perhaps nose-pinching) anecdotes about knock-out performers…..as in the smell knocking you right out!But this isn't just a run-of-the-mill toot talk. Oh no! Nigel walks us through the annals of history and culture, where flatulence has broken the ice - and wind - since the dawn of civilization. Ever wondered why you fart more at 30,000 feet? Jonathan explains the effects of altitude on gas with enough levity to lift you right out of your seat—no helium required.Did you know that the average person passes gas 14 to 15 times a day? That's right, you're not alone in your anal artistry, and throughout this episode, our hosts destigmatize breaking wind, offering advice on when to consult a professional about your potty puffs, and smooth the conversation with fun facts that'll have you reeling. So buckle up, or rather loosen your belt, and prepare for a wild ride through the world of wind-breaking. A study's found that kids who drink fizzy drinks try alcohol earlier. The study from Seoul National University found children aged 9 to 10 who drink caffeinated soft drinks daily were twice as likely to try alcohol within a year. The researchers say the study can't show if the soft drinks are causing differences in behaviour and brain activity. Auckland University nutritionist Dr Sally McKay told Kate Hawkesby that many RTDs look and taste like fizzy drinks. She says it can be a natural change, given they're already quite familiar. Chris Hipkins revealed an unexpected policy announcement in last night's debate. During last night's event, Hipkins said he wanted to ban sugary drinks in secondary schools- claiming they already were in primary schools. Today, he claimed he'd misremembered banning sugary drinks from primary schools, but had consulted on this issue as Education Minister. Health Coalition Aotearoa co-chair Boyd Swinburne said Chris Hipkins had the opportunity to introduce tougher measures against sugary drinks in schools. "It was a kind of policy that didn't have much impact. But it was put on the table by the Ministry of Education and went out for consultation about what schools should be doing in this respect." In Aotearoa New Zealand, we throw away a staggering 97 million single-use plastic drinks containers each year, with less than 7% of those ever getting recycled. Seems dumb especially when most of that drink is water. Brianne West is the founder of Ethique, the eco-beauty products business that took water out of cosmetics and saved millions of tons of plastic, water and emissions in the process. Ethique exports to more than 20 countries and was sold in 2020. Brianne is turning that success in beauty to fizzy drinks - called Incrediballs - and she joins Vincent. We have a climate policy problem in NZ that might be useful to share. Our ETS offers carbon credits primarily based on permanent pine forests. To meet our net zero 2050 we'll need to double our pine forests to 2.8mha. Pine trees are cheap, grow fast, and absorb lots of carbon in their first 25 years. Sounds good, right? Not necessarily. After 25 years growth rates slow and the trees start to die at 80. The forests tend to be mono-crops, are hostile to native flora and fauna, and are susceptible to fire, pests and storms. They also are being planted on farmland. And because there's so much planting unit prices are low and businesses find it cheaper to pay to offset their emissions, rather than invest in technology to reduce their emissions. In fact some modelling suggests the supply of units generated by the planting of forests may exceed the number needed by emitters! Our government is under huge pressure to change the ETS settings to better incentivise:- restoring native forests- reducing gross emissions- investing in biodiversity

On the 4th day of Christmas you may have got calling birds, but with us you're getting something way betterer. Episode 4 of this new season has Matt and Remfry have a good old face to face natter with Mr metal himself Brady Deeprose from the genuinely world class Conjurer, a band on the forefront of all good things heavy (and indeed metal) in the U.K. This episode was one that lived long in the memory and also the guts, as it was Brady's Top 3 Diet Fizzy Drinks. The trio chatted on for a wholesome age about drinking and even used this as an opportunity to properly do a taste test...of many, many diet fizzy drinks…for the whole episode…so many drinks…too many to be honest. By the end of the chat, I'm pretty sure Brady had regretted his topic choice…even though he was literally wearing fizzy drink branded shoes (pictorial evidence will be posted on socials). LET'S GET FIZZICAL!The trip to recommendation corner saw the guys bring up and big up a popular TV show, an album of the rock variety, and a brilliant, brilliant movie. Ending this podcast with something a bit different, rather than a Tuesday Top 3 natter the pair head into battle with a mini quick fire Matt vs Remfry. Has there ever been a better ramble episode? Following a very serious discussion to establish the few canned fizzy drinks you can actually drink fast, the ladies take a trip back down memory lane sharing their thoughts on "Vending machine foods of the 80s and 90s". What was your ultimate favorite food of your childhood? (Tweet @ us with your favorites!). Then the ladies embrace the natural segue into skin care products, and discuss the celebrity "slap my name on it" culture of today. Lauren then shares the sad story of when her mom forgot about her. Not years ago. It was yesterday, when ordering Pizza. Naz then poses the age-old question to Lauren and Ashley: "Which shaped and seasoned fries do you like best?" Why are curly fries not everywhere? Naz thinks EVERYTHING should come with a pickle. Are you a Night Owl, do you ever find yourself needing a coffee at 8:35pm? We think coffee shops might want to consider staying open later. Lauren hits us with another 'Lauren Iaconetti Zinger' of an IDGI which is rooted in the use of the possessive pronoun "MY COFFEE"! I don't think the Government could be more virtue-signalling if it tried.I'm talking about its crazy idea to ban fizzy and sugary drinks from primary and intermediate schools. It's a proposal at this stage and Education Minister Chris Hipkins has given us 8 weeks to provide feedback.Well here's my feedback - “you're too late mate, because the horse has already bolted - on several fronts”.School principals seem to be nodding their heads and saying it's a good idea. Some of them are pointing out, though, that it's nothing new and their schools already only let the kids bring water to school. The chair of the Board of Trustees at Banks Avenue School here in Christchurch is taking a different approach - he's saying that educating kids about a healthy diet is the way to go. Not legislation.Kirk McKay is his name. He says teachers are already being forced to be the “food police” at schools and government legislation banning sugary drinks would be taking things way too far. And I couldn't agree with him more.Chris Hipkins is banging on about there being “a myriad of benefits and good outcomes for learning” if school kids keep off the gut rot.The dental association is more plain-speak and upfront about it. I saw a dentist on TV last night saying he's pulled out thousands of rotten teeth from the mouths of kids who've been brought up on Coke and Fanta and all of that other stuff. And the dentists don't want the Government to stop at primary and intermediate schools - they want sugary drinks banned at high schools too.But I think the point that's missing from all of the reports that I've seen about this is yes, dentists are pulling rotten teeth out of kids' mouths, but was it only when they got to age five and started going to school that they started drinking this stuff? Of course not! We've all seen toddlers being pushed around in buggies sucking on sweet drinks, haven't we? For donkey's years, parents have been giving the wee ones stuff like Ribena, haven't they?So is a sudden switch to water on their fifth birthday going to make any real difference? I don't think so - that's why I think the Government is just virtue-signalling. It's a pipedream. The thing is, though, the Government knows it's on pretty safe ground with this.If I'd turned up at our local primary school this morning and asked the parents outside after drop-off if they thought kids should only drink water at school, I bet most would say it'd be the right thing to do.Who wouldn't?But if I then asked them whether it would make one bit of difference, given the likelihood that most kids drink all this stuff well before they get to school - I don't think they'd be quite as emphatic. But that doesn't matter for the Government. Because as long as it comes up with something that sounds like a good idea, something that looks like it's doing what's best for the kids as far as most people are concerned - then it's on pretty safe ground. And that, in my book, is the definition of virtue signalling. And that is exactly what the Government is doing here. What's more, like many things that seem to be a good idea at the time, this one has loopholes. It's saying that if this went ahead, only water, milk and non-dairy milk substitutes would be allowed.I went to the fridge here at work earlier and there was a container of Sanitarium Up and Go in it. Sounds like a milk drink, doesn't it? Yeah but look at the ingredients, and what's in it? Sugar!More evidence that this idea the Government has come up with is just virtue signalling of the highest order and, like many ideas dreamed up by people in Wellington with a whiteboard and markers, there are loopholes left, right and centre.
Is it time to ban unhealthy drinks from schools? The government wants feedback on a plan to outlaw fizz and all other sugary drinks from primary schools, meaning water, milk and non-dairy alternatives will be the only things kids can swig back on site. It says dental decay is now the most common disease reported in our children and a quarter of their sugar intake is from sweetened beverages. And you can add to that growing rates of obesity. Beach Haven Primary has already made the switch. Principal Stephanie Thompson talks to Lisa Owen.
I'm not averse to banning fizzy drinks in schools. I know many schools have already done it, some schools even have a water-only policy for drink bottles, and that all happened without too much pushback. There was, a few years ago, a big push to clear out tuck shops of all junk food too. Remember in the bad old days when we could get donuts, pies, Chelsea buns with icing, hot chips? Those days were brought to a grinding halt off the back of the good food movement and around the same time Jamie Oliver was busy trying to clean up school lunches in the UK. The sanitising of tuck shop food got more push back than the drinks did, but kids seem to have adapted and like all things, over time it becomes all they know.Younger generations will never know their school tuck shop used to serve sugar-laden carbs dripping in icing, or deep-fried treats. So I'm not sure what the holdup is with fizzy drinks. I know there's the ‘don't demonise food' brigade, and the “don't tell us what to do” brigade, (I'm in that brigade actually to be honest) but on this, I'd have to agree that young children are not particularly good at choosing the healthy option. We know from taking them to the supermarket that if given half a chance, they'll fill the trolley with junk food before they pick up a broccoli. So it makes sense, in this case, to just take the choice away from them. Yes, you could argue it's pointless if the Dairy next to school is still selling Fanta, they're just going to buy that on the way home anyway, but if you've removed at least one other avenue for them to buy it, consume it, or think about it, then you may well be able to contribute to healthier habits being formed. And that's surely all it is.If every time you open the fridge the only option is Coke, then that's all you know, you may not even know it's a bad thing. But if it's taken out of schools – for a reason, and that is – it's bad for you and it will rot your teeth, then you're going to think twice about it, you'll at the very least be more educated about your choices. So the proposal's out for public consultation and if it passes it'll mean primary schools will have to ban the fizz, and all sugary drinks, leaving only water and milk as options. And for primary school-aged kids I'm not sure what's wrong with that? It'll be harder on teachers of course, once something gets demonized kids are really quick to call you out on it.A cheeky Coke Zero in the staffroom is not going to get past an eagle-eyed 9 year old ready to tell on you. I remember when plastic wrap got demonized by schools and we all had to invest in recyclable containers or paper bags for school lunches. God help you if you sent your child to school with anything wrapped in Glad wrap. And it turned out the children were the biggest policers of all. Once they were told it was bad, we never heard the end of it. The minute one of our kids saw Glad wrap on the bench at home, we'd get a lecture on how we were killing the planet. So I do sympathize with those who'll be on the receiving end of another round of virtuous youngsters telling us how bad we are.And that'll be the most unbearable part of it, to be honest, being lectured by sanctimonious seven-year-olds.But at least they won't be getting rotten teeth.
The Wrong Way to Consume Drinks and Beverage Consuming MISTAKES is the topic of this episode. I'll share funny stories about Kids Health Drinks, Coffee Drinking, Fizzy Drinks, and lastly, share why coke is bad for you.

"Do not drink sugary fizzy drinks. They are very harmful and the more you drink the more likely you are of getting cancer" "There is a clear correlation between the number of sugary fizzy drinks and cancer, particularly stomach cancer." These are the words of Professor Robert Thomas of Bedford and Addenbrooke's Hospital who is Jon Gaunt's guest in this latest free Simple as Fat podcast. Robert, who is a Cancer specialist, also states,"50 percent of cancers are caused by lifestyle and 40 percent of these cancers are connected to obesity." In this fascinating and enlightening podcast the Professor explains that sugar is the core of problem along with starchy carbs. He says, "We do not need any processed sugar, you do not need any sugar as it has NO nutritional value at all" The Professor also states that the worst thing you can do is have cereals, fruit juice, toast and sugar in your tea on an empty stomach first thing in the morning The main points he makes are: Fighting chronic diseases like cancer is about losing the weight and exercising. If you exercise you will build muscle so even if your weight is not dropping you are getting immediate benefit. The amount of sugar imported into UK is going up we know if you have processed sugar it is harmful. Sugar creates inflammation and changes your gut bacteria health. Sugar make you absorb more fat. Fat is a nice slow energy resource Fatty foods are much better for you than sugary foods. Cut down or cut out completely starchy Carbs like bread, rice, pasta and potatoes. Vitamin and mineral supplements are not necessary if you are healthy. Gut is at centre of most chronic illness and sugar is at core of that. He also busts the cholesterol myth saying it is inflammation that triggers disease like heart It is never too late to eat your way back to good health and you can reverse type 2 diabetes by avoiding sugar and processed carbs and moving on to fats. He concludes by saying that he saw 4 patients with prostate cancer today. They were all expecting to undergo chemo or surgery but instead he told them to change their lifestyle and their diet and come back in 6 months. He says he can guarantee that if they follow his plan they will be much less likely to need any intervention. They will avoid surgery, chemo or radiotherapy. In essence he states that you can improve your chances of living longer and avoiding these chronic diseases by eating well and losing weight. For more information please check out www.simpleasfat.com

Special Guest Bec Hill CheapShow Episode 3 is another instalment of the bargain basement podcast that celebrates the very best of the worst In this episode... Eli calls Paul a down on his luck IT salesman and Paul calls Eli an inside out Danny DeVito. Eli thinks he has the ultimate solution for all these leaked nude pictures. Paul and Ash Frith give us dire warnings about our own phone misadventures. The boys answers the age old questions, "What is worse... Incessant uncontrollable orgasms or over sized testicles?" Very special guest Bec Hill gets put through the wringer thanks to a very peculiar set of inappropriate questions from Eli. Eli picks probably one of the very worst singles ever for his vinyl selection and one that ends quickly... but not quickly enough. The boys introduce a new segment called the Price of Shite - which is like a charity shop version of Antiques Roadshow... But that quickly goes off the rails and eventually leads to Ash and Bec creating, mid show, their own spin off show where the hosts are lovely and nice to each other! Can You Imagine That??!?! Eli has a brief Pop Up Pirate make over. Eli and Paul are charged with creating an advert for Camden Town, which doesn't go well and leads to a hilarious and yet shocking confession from Bec! The highlight of the show is the "Jelly Belly BeanBoozled Challenge" where Paul, Eli and the rest of the packed Camden crowd take on a jelly bean eating competition where no one knows what nice or nasty flavour they are putting in their mouths... but quickly learn to regret it... However it's Eli to takes the brunt of the misery. Finally, Eli throws his weight around on the topic of Fizzy Drinks. He may be wrong, but he really doesn't care! Dare you listen? Should you listen? Dr Mark Porter demystifies the health issues that perplex us and separates the facts from the fiction. He brings clarity to conflicting health advice, explores new medical research and tackles the big health issue of the moment revealing the inner workings of the medical profession and the daily dilemmas doctors face. As new figures published show that 1 in 7 women in England continue to smoke during pregnancy, Inside Health investigates a pilot incentive scheme - which gives women just over £750 worth of vouchers if they give up, and stay off cigarettes for at least 6 months after they give birth. What is the evidence that these incentive schemes work? And what about incentives encouraging doctors to ask whether a patient smokes, or check their blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Dr Margaret McCartney explains why she is one of many GPs who are uncomfortable with the way incentives can influence practice Plus if you've been plagued by a recurring dry tickly cough, it could be caused by a widely used family of blood pressure drug - the ACE inhibitors. Mark Porter investigates. And although it's been slightly warmer that's likely to be cold comfort for 10 million people in the UK with Raynaud's disease where the fingers turn ghostly white after exposure to temperature changes .
