South Africa currently faces a dire health crisis. Diabetes now ranks as the second leading cause of death in South Africa after tuberculosis, with a concerning 25 000 deaths attributed to the disease in 2022. Diabetes affects 12 percent of the adult population in South Africa, wreaking havoc to the family’s livelihood and the individual’s health, workplace productivity, – as well as the national fiscus. Diabetes, on diagnosed patients alone, costs South Africa’s health system a whopping R2.7 billion. And this is where increasing the sugar tax from 10 to 20 percent would help. The Healthy Living Alliance (HEALA) still maintains that the South African government has an opportunity to curb the prevalence of NCDs in South Africa, including diabetes, obesity, and related health issues. Badger culling could continue indefinitely in England under new government proposals which reverse earlier pledges to begin to phase out badger culls from next year. The Government says culls are working in helping to reduce TB in cattle. Now ministers say that in high risk and edge areas, which covers much of southwest and central England, culling could continue until the Chief Veterinary Officer deems that the situation has improved, at which point badger vaccination would be introduced. A consultation on the proposals has just been launched. The Badger Trust describes this as 'another appalling attack on a protected native species'.New rules on food labelling could be introduced to give more information about how and where its produced, but some farmers say it'll be costly and complex. Sheep farmers are benefiting from a spike in prices as Ramadan and Easter are both celebrated this month. Both events traditionally look to lamb as their meat of choice on these occasions, and farmers, processors and retailers, have all geared up for a busy time. We answer listener questions about religious slaughter, and the difference between stunned and non-stunned killing methods. The writer Michael Morpurgo and his wife Clare have long been advocates for helping young people learn more about farming and the countryside, so much so that they set up Farms for City Children nearly 50 years ago. It gives kids from urban schools a week helping to run the farm and learning about both farming and nature. For one of their latest projects, they've teamed up with the Woodland Trust to involve primary school children in planting trees inside what they call roundels.Presented by Charlotte Smith and produced by Beatrice Fenton.

Incidents like the food fraud allegations that hit the headlines last week can make shoppers really question the value of labels on food. What's the point in believing a label that says meat is British, if it might not be? All this week we're going to be looking into labelling and how well it serves us. Natural England has launched a new 18 million pound Species Recovery Grant Scheme. It aims to help protect rare and endangered species like the Ladies Slipper Orchid and water voles through things like habitat restoration and by relocating some species to new areas. From next year consumers won't be able to buy bags of compost that contain peat. Now the government has confirmed that it is phasing out peat for the professional growing sector from 2026 - with a complete ban from 2030. Conservationists say that's not soon enough, but the horticultural industry says it needs more time to find alternatives. Presenter = Caz Graham Producer = Rebecca Rooney

Researchers at Oxford University have come up with a new way of assessing the eco-credentials of supermarket food, which could lead to a new eco-label. They've estimated the environmental footprint of 57000 food products in the UK, ranging from beef to biscuits to ready meals and fizzy drinks. There's an algorithm and scoring system to rank food, and ready meals and sausage rolls are logged as 90% less harmful than beef and lamb. The Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs has welcomed the initiative. But it has its critics who argue it's too simplistic and that algorithms and broad estimates are too blunt a tool in the complex world of global food. All week we've been looking at sheep farming. Sheep are typically farmed on land which is no good for growing crops, like the high Lake District fells where we were yesterday, but some farmers are adding sheep into the arable rotation on their farms in order to improve soil health with a bit of natural fertiliser, manage weeds and provide another income stream. But having enough grass for sheep to graze in dry areas like East Anglia can be a challenge - so a sheep farmer in Norfolk has swapped grass for lucerne which is a legume plant valued for its drought tolerance, and used to feed sheep in New Zealand. With inflation exceeding 10% for the first time since 1982, more and more small businesses are counting the cost. One family-run farm-shop near York has told us they're ‘devastated' at having to close after nearly a quarter of a century serving the community. They simply can't afford their soaring energy bills. Presented by Caz Graham and produced by Beatrice Fenton.

Is the amount of information on food labels helping or hindering us when it comes to making choices about what we purchase? Consumers are said to be demanding transparency regarding the foods they eat – from animal welfare to sustainability and health and nutrition information, they want to know it all.  Surely a better-informed consumer can make better choices for their health, right?  This may not be the case with some research suggesting labelling could even be contributing to the obesity crisis. So, are the regulations surrounding food labelling a failure? Or are consumers simply ignoring the signs? A product might boast that it is low in fat, but are shoppers interested enough to read beyond the headline and find out that it is high in sugar? In this episode of the Table Talk podcast, in partnership with Ashbury – The Product Information People, Stefan Gates delves into the fascinating world of food labelling. He is joined by Ashbury's Regulatory Affairs Director, Pete Martin, as they look at the psychology, regulations and language that is at play as businesses try to make a profit while following the law and protecting the health of consumers. They investigate labelling's worst offenders that appear to lead to some consumer confusion and discuss how best to get the most useful information in front of consumers' eyes. We also learn how companies like Ashbury work with brands to ensure they get the most from their labelling and delve into the possible impact Brexit will have on food labels. Pete Martin, Regulatory Affairs Director, Ashbury With a 30-year career working in technical law for grocery and retail providers, Pete Martin brings a wealth of industry knowledge and expertise to his role as Regulatory Director at product information specialist, Ashbury.  From providing practical support and advice to clients, through to carrying out in-depth audits, delivering compliance information, and ensuring complete due diligence, Pete is not only hugely experienced in working with both food and non-food products, but is passionate about protecting brands and end consumers. At Ashbury, Pete specialises in helping clients innovate within the lines of the food regulation law - ultimately helping them to grow their brand, maximise existing markets, and develop best practice labelling compliance management.

It's three months since dead crabs and lobsters started washing up on beaches across the north east of England. At the time, the Environment Agency said investigating the source of the deaths was ‘a top priority' but since then thousands of shellfish have died and those deaths are still unexplained. Now fishermen say they're losing their livelihoods and the government must help. Campaigners are calling for reforms to food labelling. A new organisation called OmniAction wants a new set of global standards. Tim Lang, Emeritus Professor of Food Policy at City University, London says better labelling, which offered consumers more details, would put pressure on companies to improve their standards. Some farmers in the South West have described government plans for the future of farming as "confused and patronising". New Environmental Land Management schemes are replacing the previous system of support payments in England, rewarding farmers for ‘public goods' like carbon capture and improving habitats. Communities in Exmoor National Park are sceptical about how the scheme will work for them.

The issue over food standards and trade has re-surfaced after the farming minister told MPs that the Government would not take up a recommendation made in the National Food Strategy to set ‘minimum standards' on animal welfare and environmental protection. The author of the Government's National Food Strategy, Henry Dimbleby, has accused the Government of rejecting his advice. The farming minister Victoria Prentis told MPs on the International Trade Committee that although some standards are already set in law not everything can be covered by legislation. But she suggested other options - including food labelling - could be used to protect standards. Earthworms are one key barometer of soil health. As part of our week-long focus on cultivation, we head out into the fields with a worm expert, to find out how they're impacted by different cultivation methods. And the UK has led 45 countries around the world to sign up to more sustainable farming methods. They made the pledge at COP26, the International Climate Change summit in Glasgow. The measures include commitments to stop de-forestation, cut methane emissions, and invest in climate-resilient crops and new techniques for regenerating soil. People are becoming more and more interested in where their food comes from, and the idyllic image of a spotted cow chomping on grass in a lush meadow really hits a foodie's soft spot.  The assumption of better animal welfare is just one of the reasons why many are opting for “grass-fed” meat and milk. Another belief is that this label equals a purchase that is better for the environment and our health. But here's the catch - these are all assumptions based on our own interpretations of the term.  Like with many other food labels, what it actually means is not so simple. Tune in to find out more about the truth behind "grass-fed" and if it's worth the hype.Want to recommend an episode topic? Red meat is increasingly seen as the “bad guy” when it comes to climate change. Undoubtedly, animal agriculture has an impact on the environment, with 10 percent of Australia's greenhouse gas emissions coming from livestock. But Australia's leading red meat marketing and R&D organization, Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) says the negative environmental impacts from red meat are often overblown. While lamb and beef are still very popular in Australia, and cattle farmers are currently enjoying record prices, red meat consumption is becoming more contentious, and conversations about sustainable food and agriculture are increasingly susceptible to emotional debates and even misinformation. In this episode, MLA's Managing Director, Jason Strong speaks about:The MLA's commitment to become carbon neutral by 2030, and how the red meat industry plans to use technology and improvements in animal husbandry to achieve itThe battle between the Australian meat industry and the plant-based protein industry over the use of the word “meat” on labelsJason's experience with groups that he claims are unfairly “denigrating” red meat as they push their own products and agendasWhy the MLA isn't supportive of regulations to meet environmental targetsFor more information and links to resources mentioned in the podcast, visit our website

The UK’s food labelling has been seen to be out-of-step with the rest of Europe anyway, so can we expect even more divergence post-Brexit as British exporters seek out new global markets? Back inside this week, and I'm covering food allergy and anaphylaxis food labeling with may contains. I explain that with "may contains" on the food packaging it means that there is a real risk of cross contamination, and that it's very much a personal comfort zone as to the level of risk you are prepared to take with your food consumption.I also mention about the rise of ambulance call outs in Victoria, Australia alone rose by 52% over the last 5 years directly due to asthma and anaphylaxis. This says to me a higher level of education in the school community of identification of these conditions. Thanks go out to Fiona Skepton from Brisbane for sending me some awesome material last week alerting me to the local newspaper scene here doing major coverage of food allergies and anaphylaxis. If you have anything food allergy related, send it through to me and I'll cover it on the show to share it with everyone. Finally after many printing issues, our first childrens book is in the middle of being printed. Jessies Favorite Things (even with food allergies) and Jacks Favorite Things (even with food allergies) will be released very soon. Written for children with food allergies and anaphylaxis between 0 - 6 years old. You'll be able to get them from your local anaphylaxis support groups, and of course from the website here.
