Steven Soderbergh is back with his 2nd film in under three months: BLACK BAG, a new spy film starring Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender. Hey everyone, welcome back to MOVIE Morning, this time for a bit more of a low-key review... in a weekend of MANY reviews. Black Bag just hit theaters yesterday and it has gotten some pretty fantastic early reviews but I'm someone who very rarely LOVES Soderbergh's work. All his films are certainly watchable and his vast filmography proves his versatility as a filmmaker but I think his movies can often feel a little too safe and middling in quality. Is Black Bag a big departure from that? Is it the BEST film of 2025 so far? Find out in this review!Black Bag:Directed by: Steven SoderberghWritten by: David KoeppProduced by: Gregory Jacobs, Casey SilverExecutive Producer: David KoeppMusic by: David HolmesCinematography by: Steven SoderberghEditing by: Steven SoderberghProduction Design by: Philip MessinaCasting by: Carmen CubaCostume Design by: Ellen MirojnickCast: Cate Blanchett, Michael Fassbender, Marisa Abela, Regé-Jean Page, Tom Burke, Naomie Harris, Pierce BrosnanSynopsis: When his beloved wife is suspected of betraying the nation, an intelligence agent faces the ultimate test – loyalty to his marriage or his country.

HipHop has suffered quite a few losses in the past year with the deaths of MF Doom, Black Rob, DMX, and, most recently, Gregory Jacobs, aka Shock G, aka MC Blowfish, aka Pianoman, aka Rackadelic, aka Humpty Hump. In part 1 of this two-part episode J (@HipHopTaliban), Black Cloud (@AndreCole), and the Professor (@abjrphd) look at the legacy of Shock G and Digital Underground through the lens of the group’s classic first album, Sex Packets, examining the way Shock G used his reverence for Parliament-Funkadelic to craft a classic PFunk homage. Along the way, the fellas reach back and listen to some of the original funk and rock joints that set HipHop’s foundation! And the Professor gives a preview of his forthcoming book, For the Culture: HipHop and the Fight for Social Justice.

I've seen this repeated all over social media, by so many people who knew him, studied him, grew up in Bay Area scene he gave so much to. So much creativity in him it couldn't be contained in one person, he had to create a Shock G, Humpty, a Piano Man. And those who knew him best will tell you we still never got to see and hear the half of it, because he was that soul for whom the spotlight is more stress than sustenance. Which makes it all the more precious to me how he leaves behind such a dope musical legacy, built on showing all of us nerds and oddballs we have a seat at the table and a place on the dance floor. This week we try our best to honor the great Shock G, with a special mix from Tamara aka T Money including rarities and excerpts from her interviews with him.
