“If we don't fight, then what are we doing?” — Jeff BoydHow do you write fiction about contemporary America when reality itself is stranger than fiction? A country in which “alternative facts” is policy rather than satire. Where “truth” has been nationalized.Jeff Boyd, an acclaimed young American novelist, sees fiction as refuge. For both writer and reader, it gets us inside the heads of people who both inflict and endure pain. And it enables the senseless to make sense. The news cycle can't do that. A novel can.Boyd's second novel, Hard Times, out today, is his latest attempt to make sense of the senseless. No, the title isn't Dickensian — it's from Curtis Mayfield. The song on the 1975 “There's No Place Like America Today” album, with its cover juxtaposing some happy Americans in a car with others waiting miserably in the unemployment line. America might be great — but for whom, exactly? That dichotomy shapes Hard Times, which is set in a school on the South Side of Chicago where an innocent student gets shot and nobody can agree on what happened or why.Is the American Dream over? Boyd isn't quite sure. “As much as it feels impossible,” he says, “some part of me always wants to believe.” His characters fight — backs against the wall, cards stacked against them, but they don't give in. That's what Curtis Mayfield was singing about in 1975 and it's what Jeff Boyd is writing about in 2026. The times are hard. A time, once again, for novelists to seize back reality. Five Takeaways• How Do You Make Stuff Up When Reality Is Already Unbelievable? Boyd admits he sometimes wonders what the point of being a novelist is when the headlines are stranger than fiction. His answer: fiction is a refuge. It lets you get inside the heads of people who inflict pain or endure it, and try to make sense of what in reality remains senseless. The novelist can provide an answer. The news cycle can't.• Not Dickens — Curtis Mayfield: The title comes not from the 1854 novel but from the 1975 song on There's No Place Like America Today. The album cover says it all: happy people in the car, desperate people in the unemployment line. America is great — but great for whom? That dichotomy drives the book.• A Policeman's Son on George Floyd: One of the officers who stood by while George Floyd died was black — a man whose family had been proud of him for getting the job, who went in wanting to do good. Boyd can't write off an entire category of people. His black cop character in Hard Times exists to show the complexity of wanting to do right and getting caught up in wrong.• Fate vs. Agency on the South Side: Boyd's grad school friend — not religious but deterministic — argued you could draw a line from where someone starts to where they'll end up. Boyd's characters fight against that line. A kid from a broken home on food stamps doesn't have to end where you think. The novel asks whether the line holds or breaks.• The Fight Goes On: Is the American Dream over? Boyd isn't quite sure. His characters have their backs against the wall and the cards stacked against them, but they don't give in. That's what Curtis Mayfield was singing about in 1975. It's what Boyd is writing about in 2026. The times are hard. The fight goes on. About the GuestJeff Boyd is the author of The Weight (Simon & Schuster, 2023) and Hard Times (Flatiron Books, 2026). A former Chicago public school teacher and graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop, where he received the Deena Davidson Friedman Prize for Fiction, he lives in Brooklyn with his family.References:• Hard Times: A Novel by Jeff Boyd (Flatiron Books, 2026) — the book under discussion, out today. Starred review from Publishers Weekly.• The Weight by Jeff Boyd (Simon & Schuster, 2023) — Boyd's acclaimed debut novel, set in Portland.• Curtis Mayfield, “Hard Times” from There's No Place Like America Today (1975) — the song that gives the novel its title.• Charles Dickens, Hard Times (1854) — the Dickensian social realist tradition Boyd consciously works within.• Studs Terkel, Hard Times: An Oral History of the Great Depression (1970) — referenced in the conversation.About Keen On AmericaNobody asks more awkward questions than the Anglo-American writer and filmmaker Andrew Keen. The world feels overwhelming right now. Amid war and uncertainty, Jewish educators are overworked, and parents and students are pummeled with headlines and some with siren alerts. So how do we return to what makes us human: creativity, play, connection, and belonging? Stephanie Malia Krauss joins Samantha Vinokor-Meinrath to discuss simple but powerful shifts we can make in the classroom and in our own lives, like incorporating movement, prioritizing creative projects, embracing Shabbat, and thinking about our own sense of purpose. "First Mate Hard Times" hops on the show this week to discuss his path through life that began in Indiana in the 1970s. His family was well-known in the area having founded, owned, and operated Adams Oil for the local farming community. Following his parents divorce and a separation from his brother, he ran away from home at 14 years old and began to struggle with the law. He spent 25 of his 50 years on this Earth behind bars having battled issues with anger, violence, and an array of substances. When he got out of prison for the final time in 2018, he met Tom McPherson and found his way into the industry with Evansville Marine, Excel Marine, and Western Rivers. Since then, he's worked for a few smaller operations, relocated to Port Allen, La, and is looking for a local gig to call home. His life is guided these days by a committed faith and moral compass realized alongside a Christian ethos. We'll do this again one day soon to have a more in-depth look at his maritime career.
When Jason Franklin arrived in Clarksdale, Mississippi, he wasn't aware of the level of hardship facing local farming communities. Once he began to hear their stories, he couldn't help but show up. In this episode, Mike Howell sits down with Jason Franklin, a pastor at Clarksdale Methodist Church, to talk about how one simple idea sparked a movement of encouragement and support across the Mississippi Delta and beyond. What began as a local breakfast for farmers has grown into something much bigger – a community effort to pray over and bless crop fields, place signs of support for farmers, and create space for honest conversations about the pressures they face. This episode explores the realities of farming, the mental health challenges facing rural America, the connection between faith and farming, and the powerful difference it can make when communities stand with their farmers. Cotton has been part of life in Tennessee for generations. For many farm families, it's more than just a crop — it's a tradition. But lately, growing cotton hasn't been easy. Farmers are feeling the squeeze from every direction. The cost of seed, fertilizer, fuel, and equipment keeps climbing, while the price they're getting for cotton hasn't kept up. For some growers, the math just isn't working anymore. That's why more farmers are either stepping away from cotton entirely or looking at other crops that might offer a steadier return. Still, there's some hope in the industry. Brad Williams, president of the National Cotton Ginners Association and a farmer from Tipton County, believes better days could be ahead. He says new markets and the right kind of support from Congress could help turn things around for American cotton producers. While the challenges are real, many in Tennessee's cotton community are holding on to the belief that with the right changes, cotton can remain an important part of the state's agricultural future.

This isn't about shrinking your body — it's about coming home to it. Your body isn't the problem. Your relationship with your body — shaped by trauma, diet culture, and survival — is. As a kid, you likely learned that your size, shape, or weight (and the need to control them) became a way to earn safety, love, or approval. It's how you felt “good enough.” But this keeps our worth and feeling valuable attached to a metric, instead of it being an innate birthright. This is a huge part of why we want fast results – we're trying to hurry up so we can feel ‘good enough.' Keep listening as I explore how to untangle the nuanced relationship with our bodies (and food) in a healthy way that supports your mental and emotional health. Ready to Conquer the Craving Cycle?! It's time to decode the urge, untangle the pattern, and finally learn how to respond differently. This isn't about willpower. And it's not about “trying harder.” It's about understanding why a specific urge takes over — and learning how to meet that moment differently next time. In this episode, hosts Cynthia Morraz and John Dickerson have a conversation about what that overwhelm looks like on the ground — and why, even in the hardest of times, hope and community are still within reach. John shares a powerful reminder that budget cuts don't just reduce dollars — they reduce hope. And hope, for families who have never had an easy road, is everything. Cynthia and John also explore why words matter, why joy is not a luxury, and how small, intentional acts of community can make a profound difference. You'll also hear the remarkable story of Nate, a young man in Minnesota with a disability who — without any formal support system — helped three of his friends with disabilities find meaningful employment, proving that peer connection and community can accomplish what systems sometimes cannot. Cynthia and John also announce two free, interactive webinars coming in March featuring MyQuillo authors Dr. Karyn Harvey and Dr. Robert Naseef. This episode is for families, self-advocates, Direct Support Professionals, providers, and anyone who shows up for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Tourism-dependent businesses in the central North Island town of Waimarino have faced hard times since November's fire in Tongariro National Park. The blaze, which burned through almost 3000 hectares, kept the popular Tongariro Crossing closed for over a week and was then followed by a smaller fire in December, as well as wet weather. Although February has so far proven kinder, many say a good dumping of winter snow is needed to get the area, and its tills, humming again. Jimmy Ellingham reports.
I remember being a young kid and singing these words in church: "Are you weak and heavy-laden? Burdened with a load of care?" As parents, there have been times when all of us have had to honestly answer "Yes". At other times, the "Yes" comes from dear friends who are locked into periods of unimaginable burden-bearing. Difficulty is to be expected as we are all sinners living in a broken world. If you take the time to read Hebrews 12 you will find words on sonship and the Lord's discipline. God disciplines those He loves. We are reminded that while we may be feeling crushed by the weight of our present burdens, God is present and at work. Remember the words of Hebrews 12:11 - "For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it." Parents, remember that while you are parenting your children, God is parenting and forming you, especially during the hard times.

The banner for social justice on many different issues continues to wave in our society. But how do believers stand up for truth without compromising their faith? On In The Market with Janet Parshall this week we gained insight into how to navigate these challenges from a woman who walked through this journey herself. She used her experience to teach us the difference between social justice and biblical justice, what modernism is and she stressed how important a grounded biblical worldview is to navigating the challenges of standing up for truth in the modern world. Once again we helped you update your prayer list for the greatest group of influencers in all our lives, the entertainment industry by sharing some exciting news including two Hollywood heavy hitters who have joined forces to create their own studio that will make films that honor those who serve and sacrifice in the military for our national safety and the latest on the WONDER projects. Then we turned to the onslaught of cold and snow that most of the country has or is continuing to endure and whether or not as some are claiming it is the result of manmade climate change. Our expert not only dispelled that idea but he also told us about how the sales of EV cars has significantly dropped and what le the U.S. to pull out of several climate change agreements with the United Nations. A husband-and-wife team who have many trials of suffering in their life and marriage joined us for a powerful conversation to help us understand the value in our times of suffering, how times of suffering help God’s people to better understand His nature and how to walk through challenging times in a way that honors Him most. We turned our attention to the invisible realm to learn more about spiritual warfare. Our guest used Paul’s framework to help us better understand the natural and supernatural parts of God’s creation. It is time to focus on discernment as we use God’s word as the bright light of truth and measure more of the confusing and misleading news of this week against it.Become a Parshall Partner: http://moodyradio.org/donateto/inthemarket/partnersSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Life can feel overwhelmingly chaotic, and I've often found myself needing help to navigate through it. During these tumultuous times, I've learned that small, consistent habits are crucial. By embracing habits that are personal, seasonal, and flexible, I can help myself feel more grounded and less overwhelmed. Recently, my life has been filled with professional demands like editing a book and preparing for a conference, all while managing the complexities of family life. To cope, I've been playing the piano more often—it's a soothing escape that helps me reset my mind. I've also focused on maintaining strict boundaries with my time, like adhering to a rhythm schedule for work and home. Weekends are for unwinding with family, not for catching up on work tasks. By prioritizing rest and personal interests, I can show up as my best self, not in spite of challenges, but because of them. As we wrap up the conversation on instincts, Christa brings you a powerful episode exploring how our three instincts—self-preservation, sexual, and social—can turn dark or animal-like when we're scared, threatened, or in pain in our marriages or world, and we talk about how to slow down, stay kind stay human, godly, and loving in hard or dystopic times. Though the episode is grounded and practical, Christa addresses cognitive heuristics and mental shortcuts humans can use to dehumanize the "other" including the Halo Effect as well as examines how each instinct goes dark, self-preservation leading to hoarding, sexual instinct leading to using people, and social instinct leading to outgrouping and tribalism—and offers practical ways to stay strong in faith. Drawing on CS Lewis's wisdom that evil must be unwound bit by bit, she calls listeners to not rush the stories of pain away or abandon friends who voted differently as you fight for justice - we're one human body, and we must rise together.
