What happens when self-proclaimed podcast pros dive into Tales of the Valiant? Chaos, laughter, and some surprisingly insightful RPG chatter! This week on the RPGBOT.Podcast, we tackle everything from crafting epic encounters (complete with imaginary theme music) to debating whether luck should be a mechanic or just what you need to survive your GM's wrath. We even brainstorm high-speed carriage chases—because who doesn't want Fast & Furious: Medieval Drift? Oh, and don't miss our deep dive into in-game diseases (plagues at the tavern, anyone?) and a head-to-head showdown between the Tales of the Valiant GM Guide and the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide. Which one reigns supreme? You'll have to listen to find out! Tune in now, and prepare to roll... or laugh... or both. Warning: You might suddenly want to homebrew dragon-car combat. SUMMARY In this episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, the hosts flex their podcasting prowess (read: make it up as they go) and dive headfirst into Tales of the Valiant. It's like they opened a treasure chest of new RPG mechanics and dumped it all on the table. Topics include Game Mastering 101 (and 201, 301, and possibly PhD-level encounter crafting), the joys of diseases (in-game only, we hope), and why luck is no longer just for gamblers. The hosts also explore the combat rules, including aerial and vehicle fights, because every adventurer needs a mid-air dragon fight or a fast-and-furious-style carriage chase. They geek out over dungeon-building tools, NPC social dynamics, and how to brew up monsters in the Homebrewer's Toolbox without needing an apron. Finally, the episode wraps up with a showdown between the Tales of the Valiant GM Guide and the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide. Who reigns supreme? Tune in to find out, and maybe laugh a little along the way. Warning: Side effects may include a sudden urge to roll initiative. LINKS Tales of the Valiant Game Master's Guide EPISODE TAKEAWAYS The podcast boasts over 10 years of experience, though expertise in podcasting remains... debatable. Tales of the Valiant offers seamless compatibility with 5e, making it accessible for veteran and new players alike. The Game Master's Guide provides invaluable advice for new GMs, with streamlined encounter-building rules and intuitive guidance. Emphasizing human elements in gaming, the guide highlights the importance of crafting immersive and meaningful stories. Magic item crafting demands both proficiency and time, while diseases and luck mechanics add unique gameplay twists. Expanded combat mechanics, including multi-phase boss fights, underwater and vehicle combat, and colossal enemies, enrich tactical gameplay. Tools like dungeon generators and social mechanics deepen adventures, while minions and "bloodied" rules enhance combat dynamics. Variant rules, like Doom Points, introduce strategic tension but may not suit every table's playstyle. The Homebrewer's Toolbox empowers GMs with user-friendly monster creation rules and creative resources. Random tables and flexible mechanics support diverse play styles, making the guide a robust resource for 5e games. Compared to the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide, Tales of the Valiant GM Guide offers significant improvements, delivering a richer toolkit for GMs and players alike. The Homebrewer's Guild has been hard at work on a big project. The work has been largely philosophical up until this point and it was finally time to lay track down before we design this train. So today, we'd like to catch you all up to speed on the project known as Twilight Imperium Zero Edition. This is intended to be our fun modification to Twilight Imperium and act as a stripped down, simpler version of Twilight Imperium. Exactly what form that takes will be a longer process, but for now we can talk about some of the things we want to see. In addition to talking design goals, we decide to make a Prophecy of Kings compliant faction design for the Lazax Empire so that we have something to work backwards from once we decide to design them as a faction in Zero Edition. The Space Cats are a domineering force when it comes to Twilight Imperium. They're the closest thing the game has to a mascot and when they're in game a lot of things seem to revolve around them. They've also often been accused of dramatically slowing the game down. Today we evaluate what it means to sit down at a table where the Hacan are playing, but not BY YOU. How can you utilize their wares to improve your own position? Are there things you need to do to slow them down? 8-15-23 Tonight we're talking with Ben Chaney, owner of Scale and Feather Meadery in Avondale, Arizona. Scale & Feather is a small meadery run by three friends, Ben and Tamara Chaney are high school sweethearts who are going strong with 25 years together. Amber DeGiso is a graphic design specialist–creates cool labels and logos. They specialize in using local ingredients to produce their products. Chaney and one of the other founders, Matt Cross, took a class at UC Davis to learn more about honey wine. Their first foray into the mead business was making it for friends' weddings.   Decorated like an ancient mead hall complete with a flickering chandelier, the tasting room's theme is reminiscent of Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones. Chaney says a highlight of the space is a dragon head with glowing eyes that's poised above the bar. Scale & Feather is also located next to a Nintendo-themed brewery called 8-Bit Aleworks. Ben has been making mead at home since 2011, and inspired by friends living their dreams, He decided that it was time to play with the big boys and, along with his wife and friend, opened Scale and Feather Meadery in 2019. A Native Arizonan, Ben graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing degree and has over 18 years of advertising, marketing, and event management experience. Ben completed the UC Davis Advanced Mead Making and Business of Mead Making course and won a silver medal from the Arizona Society of Homebrewers before going pro. Scale & Feather Meadery has received bronze medals from the National Honey Board in 2021 and Texas Mead Cup in 2022. Spicy meads started in 2019 and have since become a focus point for sales as in Arizona sweet and spicy seem to be a winning combination.
