Hosted by Matthijs Wouter Knol, this episode spotlights an important figure in the history of the EFM through a personal conversation and a journey through time. This special episode revolves around the former EFM director Beki Probst through a conversation that took place during the Cannes Film Festival between her and Matthijs Wouter Knol, who himself has been in the seat as director of the EFM as a successor. Beki depicts her journey through the film industry with anecdotes from her life in the film industry, from her starting out as a young journalist traveling to Cannes, to suddenly finding herself in Berlin. She shares stories of people she crossed paths with along the way, how the Berlinale took place right after the fall of the wall and draws a picture of the future industry through her own expectations and lived experiences. This all adds to the portrayal of the woman who came to found the European Film Market as we know it today. Beki Probst is considered the grande dame of the film world. Under her direction, the European Film Market has developed into one of the largest and most important trade fairs for cinema on the international scene. Beki Probst was born in Istanbul, where she first worked as a journalist after completing her studies in law and journalism. In 1960, Probst moved to Switzerland, where she became the general manager of the Probst-Kinobetriebe, known today as Quinnie Cinemas. From 1981 to 1988, Beki Probst served as the Berlin International Film Festival's official delegate for Turkey and Greece. Up until 1995, she also served as a member of the selection committee for Locarno International Film Festival. From 1988 to 2014, Beki Probst was the director of the Berlinale's European Film Market – Probst rebranded the former “film fair” as the European Film Market and subsequently transformed the event into one of the most significant industry meet-ups for the international film business. In addition, from 1988 to 1996 Beki Probst was artistic director of the Geneva-based festival “Stars de Démain”. She has served as a jury member on multiple occasions at international film festivals, including appearances in Toronto, Jerusalem and San Sebastián. In 1992 Beki Probst was decorated as “Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres” by the French Ministry of Culture, was honoured with the Berlinale Camera in 2018 and in 2019 with the Honorary Award of the Swiss Film Award. In 2024 she was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (Verdienstkreuz am Bande der Bundesrepublik Deutschland). Since 2021, Dutch-born Matthijs Wouter Knol is the CEO and Director of the European Film Academy. Before reading and graduating with an MA in Contemporary History at Leiden University and the Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome, he worked as a magazine editor and journalist. From 2001 onwards, he worked in Amsterdam as creative and associate producer on 30 award-winning documentary films, with renowned directors such as Heddy Honigmann, Maria Ramos, and Mani Kaul. For ARTE, he co-produced a digital edition of 40 re-mastered works of Dutch documentarian Johan van der Keuken, which was awarded the Prix Cahiers du Cinéma (2006). After a short stint at IDFA (2007-2008), he formed for 12 years part of the senior Berlinale team, first as Head of Programming of Berlinale Talents (2008-2014), then as Director of the European Film Market (2014-2020). Apart from launching several new training and industry platforms over the course of his career, Matthijs is an advocate for more Diversity and Inclusion. He initiated D&I schemes at both EFM and the European Film Academy, and was one of the founders of the Anti-Racist Taskforce for European Film (ARTEF). He teaches and coaches at various film schools and is a regular moderator and speaker at international film industry events. Matthijs has been part of the main jury at the festivals of Buenos Aires, Jerusalem, Istanbul and Locarno. Secession Podcast: Members is a series of conversations featuring members of the Secession. This episode is a conversation between the member Marianne in conversation with the members Christine and Irene Hohenbüchler. It was recorded on December 11, 2023. Marianne Maderna (b. 1944) lives and works in Vienna and Lower Austria. Her interdisciplinary installations, environments, and performances grapple with socially relevant concerns that address the human condition and devise novel ways to frame patterns of human behavior and hierarchical systems. Her work has been featured in exhibitions including RADICAL BUSTS, Arkadenhof, University of Vienna (2015); HUMANIMALS, Zeitkunst NÖ, Dominikanerkirche Krems (2013); Das erste Haus, Architekturzentrum Wien, Vienna (1996); Raum und Ausgang, Secession, Vienna (1990–91); and Maderna, Secession, Vienna (1982). She was awarded the Grand Decoration of Honor for Services to the State of Lower Austria in 2018; the Prize of the City of Vienna for Sculpture in 1996; and the Honorary Award for Visual Arts of the State of Lower Austria in 1991. Christine and Irene Hohenbüchler live in Eichgraben near Vienna. They have been partners in life and art since 1990; the idea of “multiple authorship” plays a central role in their work. In the 1990s, they primarily worked with socially marginalized groups: prisoners, people with mental illnesses, and individuals with additional needs. Their creative practice subsequently shifted toward collaborations with children and school and university students. In addition to these group works, they have made art engaging with its historical, social, and political context and produced participatory projects that underscore the visitors' or users' active involvement in creative processes. Large-format drawings have flanked their work throughout the years. Christine has been professor of drawing and visual languages at the Institute of Art and Design in TU Wien's Faculty of Architecture and Planning since 2002. Irene has led the class in cooperative strategies at the University of Fine Arts Münster since 2011. The Dorotheum is the exclusive sponsor of the Secession Podcast. In the 388th Ellises’ Analysis, we’re back on the Martin Scorsese mob-movie train. The Depahted is a high-energy remake that finally won Marty an Oscar, even though it’s something of a greatest hits flick, especially for this living legend and his frequent collaborators. While it’s entertaining and the cast is an impressive collection of talent, the film doesn’t have the depth or staying power that Scorsese’s best pictures do. Is this even in his Top 5? Anyway, make no mistake, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon doing fine work in the compare-and-contrast lead moles…uh, make that roles…you know you’re in good hands. So don’t be a rat in Jack Nicholson’s gangster crew and please don’t make an appointment with the worst therapist in Bahston…or perhaps in the entire world. Just settle in for a solid hour of us celebrating AND grousing about ol’ Bullet To The Head. Well, Actually: Stanley Kubrick won an Oscar for 2001: A Space Odyssey’s Visual Effects (not an Honorary Award). Also, Orson Welles won a trophy for co-writing Citizen Kane and then many years later DID win an Honorary Oscar too. Also also, Alfred Hitchcock won the Thalberg award, not the Honorary Award. And finally, Chloe Zhao DID win the DGA award for Best Director on April 10th, as expected. You don’t need to take a single gunshot to your noggin to get yourself some Sparkplug Coffee. 1954 saw one of the most controversial filmmakers of all time walk away with his second Oscar for Best Director: Elia Kazan. He undoubtedly changed cinema forever, but his actions in front of HUAC tarnished his reputation so much that when he received his Honorary Award decades later only half of the audience applauded him. That being said, On The Waterfront is one of the greatest American movies of all time and features Marlon Brando's Oscar winning performance. Tune in as we break down this historic year!

HISTORY! Wes Studi joins an amazing list of Honorary Award winners like Robert Redford, Spike Lee, Charlie Chaplan, Akira Kurosawa, James Earl Jones, and the list goes on! These people are recognized for significant achievements in their craft, over an entire career. Wes trailblazed an impressive career where he amazed and dazzled audiences with roles like Toughest Pawnee in Dances with Wolves, Magua in The Last of the Mohicans, and Geronimo in Geronimo: An American Legend. Added depth, intelligence, and language to characters that would be represented inadequately otherwise. Wes changed the trajectory of an industry that historically misrepresented Native Americans on screen, and is recognized for it on this night. Listen as I recap Wes's career, life, and the presenting of the award itself. Also I explain, what the hell an actual Honorary Award (Oscar) is and why it's so significant! Bottom line...a Native won an Oscar...get excited! Be excited and listen as I dedicate an episode to the G.O.A.T.
About Episode 15: Our Guest, Yemi Osunkoya Kosibah is an award winning designer behind the Kosibah label. He launched his label Kosibah in September 1991 in London, UK.. Even as a small child Yemi Osunkoya had an exceptional eye for detail. Mere minutes after attending weddings with his parents in his homeland of Nigeria, he would start sketching the elaborate designs he had seen adorning the bridal party, recreating everything from the bridesmaids’ parasols to the flower girls’ hemlines with the help of only pen and paper. Years later he turned that talent into a flourishing career in couture. Even before he launched his line in 1991 he knew it would be named Kosibah, a name given to a baby girl born on a Sunday in the Republic of Benin, after his mother to honor the nourishment and encouragement his parents gave his artistic pursuits. Osunkoya draws inspirations from his international travels as well as many other art forms including the ballet, and contemporary painting. Spending countless hours studying the work of legends like Dior, Balenciaga, and Givenchy, who felt the foundation of the garment was as important as its exterior, inspired him to study the time-honored art of couture at the Paris Academy of Fashion where he achieved top-tier grades in both men’s and women’s wear. Actresses, dignitaries, and even royalty have turned to Osunkoya to make the most memorable days of their lives even more magnificent including Lady Janet Boateng, Dianne Abbott MP, Alesha Dixon, Sheila Ferguson, Hollywood actresses Louise Rose and Indra Ové, Miss World Agbani Darego, and singers Stephanie Benson and Kelly Rowland. His gowns have been worn to royal balls, state dinners, and other courtly occasions. But despite his illustrious clientele he prides himself on offering superior service to each and every one of his clients. He ensures that they feel involved in the process of creating their couture gown welcoming their input and happily honoring any religious or cultural traditions with respect and consideration. His celebrated bridal work has received Diamond Recognition from National Weddings. He has also been named International Designer of the Year by City People magazine, and received the Honorary Award for Contributions to Fashion from Fashion Diversity. He has been featured in a variety of publications including World Bride Magazine, BHF magazine, TW magazine, Lady Brille Magazine, Noir Bride, African Luxury and The Undefeated. Still his greatest accolades come from his clients who continue to send heartfelt thanks sometimes even years after they’ve worked together to make their dreams come true. Before we all had access to an exceptional camera built right into our smartphones, we could not share stories like we do today. Our Community Stories program for mobile film was created to fill that need. Episode 63 of the SBP Podcast: The Voice of Mobile Film™ shares the story of Alexandra Guillossou, the Second Prize winner of IMFF 2019. People from all walks of life, people who are not professional videographers or filmmakers, or even those who are, simply did not have access to their cameras when the opportunity arises to capture our stories. Community Stories is about sharing stories through filmmaking using smartphone cameras as a participating member of a community or culture. Alexandra Guillossou was on vacation spending time with her family. Her brother has Multiple Sclerosis and as a member of the family, Alexandra began to record her family out by the lake. As she did so, she began to think about focusing on her brother and capturing her brother who is dealing with MS. Later, as she watched her footage, she decided to make documentary to share her family’s story. When she submitted the film to the International Mobile Film Festival in San Diego it was a film with a good story that we decided to select and screen in the festival. So I contacted Alexandra and notified her about how her film qualified as a Community Story and offered her the opportunity to present her film as such, in San Diego.Alexandra Guillossou won Second Prize at the film festival and also won an Honorary Award from a selection of judges made up by winners of the Global Mobile Film Awards™, Matteo Tibiletti who won Best Experimental with “Yes, No” and Brian Hennings who won Best Cinematography with “Focus.” The films participating in the GMFA Honorary Award contest were only short films from attending filmmakers participating during the film festival in San Diego. We asked Alexandra to share the experience of going back to visit with her family and telling her brother his story won. During this episode, we discuss a topic I hope our listeners find informative and motivating. We address the power of how our films should be focused on storytelling because it can bring people together. We find ourselves spending most of our time connecting with technology and stories help us feel human emotions and I believe stories help us connect to our humanity. We also discuss the trend in mobile filmmaking where people are sharing formulas and processes for making films with smartphones at the risk of destroying the opportunity that mobile filmmaking brings to storytellers without filmmaking experience to realize their dream. The democratization of mobile filmmaking is worthy of preserving and it has many different genres, and creates new genres too. Alexandra inspires us. All of us. Alexandra made a film with her phone without filmmaking experience and her film touches people in ways that it has been selected in different film festivals and has already won awards. Most of us create things and we do not realize the potential of our creations. Some of us don’t even believe something we create can have an impact in some way or win awards. But after listening to her story, I hope you are inspired to go for it. You will never know your potential until you complete it and put it out there. If you like what you made, don’t hold back. SBP Podcast: The Voice of Mobile Film™ is for everyone who ever wanted to or is curious about making movies and videos using smartphones.International Mobile Film Festival in San Diego is open for submissions right now for feature length films and short films. If you shot your film with a smartphone, submit your film to our film festival, and if you can, make a point of attending in beautiful San Diego.Watch the trailer for “The Deepest Cut”: https://youtu.be/cm-kLe74om4Follow Alexandra and her film online: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/deepestcutdoc/Twitter:https://twitter.com/onemousecreativOur Links: Submit a short or feature length mobile film to IMFF 2020: https://internationalmobilefilmfestival.com/mff/rulesSubscribe, support and listen to bonus episodes and more on Patreon: http://patreon.com/sbppodcastSBP Podcast Blog: http://sbppodcast.wordpress.comSBP Podcast Website: http://sbppodcast.studioiTunes/Apple Podcasts: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/sbp-podcast/id1296673665International Mobile Film Festival Website: http://internationalmobilefilmfestival.comFacebook: http://facebook.com/sbppodcastTwitter: http://twitter.com/sbppodcastMFTV (Mobile Film Network Distribution Channel): http://MobileChannel.tvHashtag: MobilizeStories Mobile Film Community Website: http://mobilizestories.comSusy Botello on Twitter: http://twitter.com/susybotelloSBP Podcast on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4ISEF0SZOLyRpw20loXzlo#upsellSmartphone Filmmaking Publication on Medium: https://medium.com/smartphonefilmmakingAre you starting a Podcast? As Oscar season continues, we come to our additional podcast review this week for the "Honorary Award" show. It is the adaptation of Democratic Presidential nominee Gary Hart's story titled "The Front Runner" starring Hugh Jackman, J.K. Simmons, Vera Farmiga and more. It was the second film released this year by writer/director Jason Reitman after "Tully." How does it compare? How does "The Front Runner" hold up in today's political climate? And what is its Oscar potential? Joining me for this review is Beatrice Loayza, Nicole Ackman and our guest for this week is Jorge Birnam from Splash Report.
