His research focused on the anticarcinogenic effects of an extract from the Perfoliate Bellwort plant on human uveal melanoma cells. Kang's study showed a decrease in cell viability and efficacy compared to a control cytotoxic agent. This research marks an early exploration of natural biologics for cancer treatment, with potential for fewer side effects than traditional methods. Judges from various biotech companies awarded Kang a cash prize sponsored by Evans General Contractors. Further research is needed to determine the extract's effectiveness and concentration consistency. STORY 2: Cobb Commissioners Satisfied with Private Trash Haulers Cobb County Chairwoman Lisa Cupid stated that there are no plans to reintroduce a proposal to overhaul trash collection in the county, attributing this decision to improvements made by private trash hauling companies, resulting in fewer resident complaints. In 2022, the county faced issues with shoddy service, prompting the scrapped proposal to create four trash pickup zones. Since then, the county has collaborated with haulers to address concerns. Brian Warren, president of Garbage Haulers of Cobb County, reported a decline in complaints and highlighted the association's role in facilitating communication between haulers and residents. While some challenges persist, such as recruiting staff and obtaining truck parts, the current framework is deemed satisfactory. Cupid emphasized the importance of monitoring haulers' performance and promoting the association's website to facilitate communication. STORY 3: Powder Springs Studio Presents Music in Virtual Reality Soapbox Studios, based in Powder Springs, has developed a free virtual reality app that offers an immersive experience of musicians performing in your own home. Utilizing Meta Quest virtual reality headsets, users can enjoy live performances from artists like Buddy Guy, Ralph Johnson, T-Pain, and more. The studio aims to provide a historical archive of artists' performances while offering a unique fan experience. Soapbox is also exploring partnerships with major recording labels to expand its roster of artists. The app, available on Meta Quest's App Lab, has garnered positive responses during beta testing, attracting users from 65 countries. Soapbox welcomes local performers interested in filming their own virtual reality content to reach out through their website. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info.    We'll be right back Break: DRAKE STORY 4: Broken Bridge at Kennesaw Mountain Park Replaced The footbridge on the 24-Gun Battery Trail within Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, previously rendered unsafe due to destruction by a fallen tree, has now been replaced. This development follows an incident last week which compelled the park authorities to recommend that visitors refrain from using the affected section of the trail, situated to the west of Old Mountain Road. In a recent update shared via a Facebook post on Wednesday, the park confirmed the completion and readiness of the new bridge for visitor access. The park expressed its gratitude towards the maintenance team for their expedient response in restoring safe passage on the trail. STORY 5: Judge Grubbs on Growing up in Post War London Senior Judge Adele Grubbs shared her remarkable life story with fellow Marietta Rotarians, recounting her childhood in post-war London. Growing up in poverty, she experienced the aftermath of World War II, where everyday luxuries were scarce due to strict rationing. Despite the hardships, Grubbs found resilience in her upbringing, never realizing the deprivation she faced. Her journey led her to success, becoming the first female prosecutor in Cobb County and eventually serving as a judge in the Cobb County Superior Court. Grubbs's humble beginnings continue to influence her, reflected in her frugality and appreciation for simple pleasures like Spam. Her story exemplifies strength, resilience, and compassion, shaping her into a respected figure both in and out of the courtroom. We'll be back in a moment   Break: INGLES 2   STORY 6: LEAH MCGRATH And now here is Bruce Jenkins' conversation with Leah McGrath on bioengineered ingredients.   Break: TEDS   Signoff-   Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Marietta Daily Journal podcast. This story, based on anonymous Senate Republicans, contained all the Democrat arguments that Psaki made in this segment. https://www.foxnews.com/politics/white-house-confirms-more-than-100b-in-taxpayer-resources-spent-on-ukraine White House confirms more than $100B spent on Ukraine war The White House confirmed the Biden administration has spent more than $100 billion on the war in Ukraine, according to documents obtained by Fox News Digital. The information came as a response from the White House’s Office of Management and Budget to Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio and more than 30 Senate Republicans who demanded in January a "full crosscutting" report on security assistance provided to Ukraine. Fox News Digital obtained the OMB letter and spreadsheet responding to Vance more than 7 months later. OMB Director Shalanda Young penned a letter to Vance explaining the security assistance the United States has provided to Ukraine since Feb. 24, 2022. "With bipartisan Congressional support, the United States has provided security, economic, and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine as it continues to fight to defend its sovereignty following Russia’s brutal invasion," Young wrote. "This support has been critical to Ukraine’s success on the battlefield, as well as the ability of its people to endure under harsh conditions." Young stressed that President Biden "has made clear" that the United States "will not waver in our commitment to the Ukrainian people as they fight for their freedom and independence." Young told Vance that Biden administration officials "agree that transparency and accountability are paramount to ensuring American taxpayers can be confident in their assistance in helping the Ukrainians fight for their country against Russia’s aggression." Young provided Vance a "table that details supplemental funding provided in support of Ukraine in addition to current obligation levels, which OMB shared with Congress" in August. The table shows that a total of $101,198,000,000 has been obligated/executed by the Office of Management and Budget. In addition to the $101.2 billion already spent, the spreadsheet appears to outline plans to spend an additional $9.8 billion. The table breaks down the spending from the Department of Defense; Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative; State Department; and other federal agencies providing aid. Earlier this year, the Pentagon requested an additional $6 billion due to an accounting error at the Department of Defense. Vance and Sen. Josh Hawley introduced legislation soon after to prevent such mistakes from being repeated. In addition to the more than $100 billion already spent in Ukraine, the White House last month asked Congress to authorize an additional $24 billion. Biden's request comprises $13 billion for defense and $11 billion for economic and humanitarian aid in Ukraine. https://justthenews.com/accountability/whistleblowers/whistleblower-says-cia-officials-were-paid-change-view-covid Whistleblower says CIA officials were paid to change view that COVID originated in Wuhan lab Most officers on the CIA's COVID Discovery Team concluded that the coronavirus originated from a laboratory in Wuhan, China, but they changed their positions after receiving a monetary incentive, a senior-level CIA agent told Congress. The whistleblower informed Coronavirus Pandemic Subcommittee Chairman Rep. Brad Wenstrup and Intelligence Committee Chairman Rep. Mike Turner that at the end of the CIA's COVID review, "six of the seven members of the Team believed the intelligence and science were sufficient to make a low confidence assessment that COVID-19 originated from a laboratory in Wuhan, China," the Ohio Republicans wrote in a letter Tuesday to CIA Director William Burns. The team's seventh member, who was the most senior person, was the only person to believe that the virus originated from an animal, the lawmakers also said. "The whistleblower further contends that to come to the eventual public determination of uncertainty, the other six members were given a significant monetary incentive to change their position," the chairmen wrote. The allegations, which stemmed from a "seemingly credible source" require Congress to investigate how the CIA handled its investigation of COVID's origins, according to the lawmakers. The Republicans are demanding the CIA hand over information to their committees as part of their probe, and they threatened to use "additional tools and authorities to satisfy our legislative and oversight requirements" if the agency does not comply. https://news.usni.org/2023/09/09/u-s-canadian-warships-transit-taiwan-strait-2 U.S., Canadian Warships Transit Taiwan Strait An American guided-missile destroyer and a Royal Canadian Navy frigate sailed through the Taiwan Strait in a tandem Saturday transit, U.S. 7th Fleet announced. The Japan-based USS Ralph Johnson and HMCS Ottawa passed through the strait after drilling with Japanese ships in the East China Sea, near Okinawa, USNI News reported on Friday. “The ships transited through a corridor in the strait that is beyond the territorial sea of any coastal state,” reads the statement. “Ralph Johnson and Ottawa’s bilateral transit through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the commitment of the United States and our allies and partners to a free and open Indo-Pacific.” During an exercise earlier this week, Ralph Johnson and Ottawa sailed with big deck helicopter carrier JS Izumo and destroyer JS Samidare as part of the trilateral exercise Noble Stingray that included anti-submarine warfare drills. A Canadian Broadcasting Corporation crew aboard Ottawa took footage of a People’s Liberation Army Navy guided-missile destroyer shadowing the formation. “The heavily armed Chinese destroyer, the Luyang, closely followed the convoy of ships in the East China Sea, calling out repeatedly to the Canadians on maritime radio, and coming within just over a kilometer of the allied ships,” reads the CBC report. It’s unclear if Hohhot followed Ralph Johnson and Ottawa during their transit. The last reported U.S. surface ship transit was by U.S. Coast Guard cutter Stratton in June. Nathaniel Schutta (or Nate) is a software architect focused on cloud computing and building usable applications. A proponent of polyglot programming, Nate has written multiple books and appeared in various videos. Nate is a seasoned speaker, regularly presenting at conferences worldwide, No Fluff Just Stuff symposia, meetups, universities, and user groups. In addition to his day job, Nate is an adjunct professor at the University of Minnesota where he teaches students to embrace (and evaluate) technical change. Driven to rid the world of bad presentations, Nate co-authored the book Presentation Patterns with Neal Ford and Matthew McCullough. Nate has published Thinking Architecturally and Responsible Microservices both available as free downloads from VMware.   Topics of Discussion: [5:12] How Nate decided he liked development and architecture, and who was Dr. Evil? [7:10] Nate worked at a software company for a brief period and spent a lot of his time building enterprise web apps. [10:13] Is it possible to think and talk about software the same, regardless of language? [14:17] Nate Defines circuit breaker. [15:56] The importance of having good observability and monitoring in place to see what is going on. [22:35] Nate gives some categories of architects and where he thinks it changes in responsibility and scope. [26:14] To quote Ralph Johnson, “Architecture is the important stuff, whatever that is.” While we may have different definitions of “IT,” Nate thinks that it has the decisions that are hard to change later, and the ones we hope we get right in the first place. The “IT” is also what matters to the application at hand. [36:14] Are we currently at another inflection point? [38:03] The current landscape and challenges of inventing things on the fly. [45:22] What can we expect from Nate's new book? [55:54] Engineers often overlook soft skills, and the Dale Carnegie books on leadership are a great place to start.   Mentioned in this Episodes: Clear Measure Way Architect Forum Software Engineer Forum Programming with Palermo — New Video Podcast! [4:46] At the infrastructure level, this is the pattern to pay attention to: serverless architecture. [8:03] At the system level, this is one of three patterns you should be paying attention to: domain-driven design. [10:48] Also at the system level, you should pay attention to: microservices. [12:35] Discussing the two different major architectures that distributed architectures generally come down to: event-driven and web services. [16:27] Jumping down to the application level, Jeffrey begins highlighting the four must-know architecture patterns to be paying attention to, starting with: MVC and MVVM. [19:48] A word from Azure DevOps Podcast’s sponsor: Clear Measure. [20:17] Next on the application level, Jeffrey highlights: onion architecture and layered architecture. [23:01] Next on the application level: CQRS vs. structured programming. [25:24] Last on the application level: onion DevOps architecture. [28:46] At the layer level, Jeffrey highlights several must-have patterns, starting with: the adapter pattern. [30:45] Next on the layer level: mediator and chain responsibility. [31:34] The overall family pattern that mediator and chain responsibility are a part of: hub-and-spoke. [34:10] Lastly on the layer level: observer. [36:21] For different design patterns you will want to know how to describe them and be able to create diagrams. Jeffrey recommends PlantUML for this. “We Sure Could Use A Smooth New Day” Euripides once said, "Life is a short affair; we should try to make it smooth and free from strife….” Well, if you’re having trouble in the free from strife department, throw on some Dave Koz and let the smooth begin. Kos’s new album A New Day is as smooth as it comes—not only does it feature guest performances from Brian McNight, Earth Wind and Fire's Ralph Johnson, and David Sanborn, it’s Koz’s first album of new material in almost ten years. From the rousing title track to the affecting reading of the Beatles “Yesterday," A New Day demonstrates that not only is Koz a deft player with finesse and groove, he’s still as smooth as they come. In this conversation, the saxophonist talks to Alex about trying to stay positive, coming out at 40 and how growing up his instrument became a haven for his pain.
