This week we're excited to present a conversation with The Life Ahead director Edoardo Ponti who recently joined us for the retrospective Sophia Loren: La Signora di Napoli. Sophia Loren delivers a towering performance in her son Edoardo Ponti's 2020 adaptation of the novel Madame Rosa, which embodies the range, intelligence, and innate charisma of the legendary actress. Previously adapted in 1977 by Moshé Mizrahi, with Simone Signoret in the lead role, Ponti moves Romain Gary's novel to Bari, Italy, where a Holocaust survivor turned children's caretaker (Loren) forms an unlikely friendship with a bitter street kid (a spectacular Ibrahim Gueye) after he robs her. By turns tender and haunted, the storied role of Rosa is imbued here with the unmistakable wisdom of a seasoned performer, who subtly nods to her own illustrious on-screen persona with subtlety and grace. This conversation was moderated by FLC Programmer Tyler Wilson.

Like every good parent, Our heavenly Father wants the best for His children. He shows us the problems of life we will all face and how they can be avoided. He tenderly offers a key to life. He urges us to be wise, to avoid foolish trust of ourselves. We are instead to put our faith in the Lord. Wisdom indeed for the road ahead.

THE AWARD GOES TO... What did you make of the Oscars, then? In part 2 we finish our look through the Best Original Song category at the 2021 Academy Awards but fear not, Future Ben is here to let us know how we faired. Songs covered in this episode: "Io Si (Seen)" from The Life Ahead, "Speak Now" from One Night in Miami and "Hear My Voice" from The Trial of the Chicago 7. Warning: the episode contains high levels of Diane Warren fangirling (but how is that different to any other episode?) We are supposed to run forward and not away because life takes a similar move. We have to face our true moments, agree with truth, and thank God for the gift of Life as we are creating the focus for the life ahead. Let's remind ourselves on our fallen states, know how we did fall and plan to stand safe without fear. "... If God is on our side, whom shall I fear...''. Have God in your life, work hard, and never fear as we are on the final days of 2020.

American long-distance runner, Deena Kastor, won the bronze medal in the Olympic women's marathon in Athens. She was an eight-time national champion in cross country and won both the Chicago Marathon and the London Marathon. Deena has defied the odds over and over again to achieve her dreams and smash through barriers. This episode helps us reprogram our minds for the marathon of life ahead. When people ask Deena what she does, how does she like to reply? "I'm slower than I was, I am not going to run a 2.19 ever again.” Deena on creating a new identity. What Deena discovered about the struggle that comes with running a marathon? Can we come to learn to embrace struggle? Deena's proudest moment came in Chicago where she placed 6th. She did 7 mins slower than her personal best, why was that so special? In the 2008 Olympic Marathon, Deena was favoured to run well and finished the race in a bus. The process of dealing with that and repairing our spirit. Every marathon is hard - how we think about a thought that will serve us better. How to compartmentalise? How does Deena bring herself to the moment at the start line when it is all on the line? At the start line, it's you, Kenyans to your left, Ethiopians to your right, they are going to work against you. How did you build the belief that you can be your best? How does Deena view disappointment? Barack Obama said, "there is nothing more defining of our character or satisfying to our spirit than giving our all to a difficult task." What was the darkest moment Deena faced in a race that brought the most satisfying moment? Deena was found to have melanoma and was told it could be genetic. How did that impact Deena? Deena was adopted, how did Deena view adoption and was there a story created in her mind at that time? The purpose of running is to test the spirit of the human heart, would Deena agree? Why is marathon such a beautiful race? Deena talks of having an angel and a devil on her shoulders, how does she manage that dialogue? Can Kipchoge's do it…can he run a sub-2hr marathon? Not overtrained, but under-recovered. Not overworking, under-rested. You don't have to already be doing well in order to qualify for a good future; nor do you have to be miserable in order to be poised for transformation. It all has less to do with what you bring to the table than it does with how close you allow God to get to you. As Daniel concludes the pivotal message he began last week, he offers all kinds of bright illustrations to help us grasp this one great truth: the best is yet ahead, and you can't drag your past along with you if you'd embrace all the fulfillment that's in store. (And it's trusting the promises of God--not your promises to yourself--that propels you forward to get there.)
How do I "get my life back" when I've reached the close of a season, and I feel too depleted to have any vision for what's ahead? This week and next, Daniel offers a fresh reading of some Bible texts that will help energize anyone who's facing the uncertainties of transition. In each season of life, there really is a way to maximize the abundance that Jesus has promised. So, as you listen personally to each of these portions of Scripture, be ready to recieve from God a new sense of purpose and hope--both for NOW and for your FUTURE.
