It was 7:32 PM on August 10th, 2018 when security warnings notified all employees at the Seattle-Tacoma airport to immediately halt activity until further instruction. At first, nobody knew that a Bombardier Q400 plane had just executed an unauthorized take off from the runway but soon, locals would notice the 76-passenger aircraft flying unusually low to the ground. Behind the yoke was 28-year-old Richard Russell, a Horizon Air service agent. After repeated attempts, air traffic control was able to reach him, and what followed would be a conversation that so many would never forget. Listen to the full episode on PATREON

Episode Notes Alaska Air Group said it would buy Hawaiian Airlines in an all-cash transaction valued at $1.9 billion, including Hawaiian's debt. The parent company of Alaska Airlines and regional Horizon Air said it would continue to operate Hawaiian as an independent brand, reports Edward Russell, editor of Skift publication Airline Weekly. The proposed merger isn't a sure thing, given that it faces antitrust review by the Biden Administration. Analysts noted that JetBlue recently attempted to merge with Spirit Airlines, but that deal has since been mired in legal review. Given that the route networks of Alaska and Hawaiian wouldn't lead to the same concentration as the networks of JetBlue and Spirit, the probability is higher that the Alaska-Hawaiian deal will go through, reports Russell. Next, the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA) and American Airlines are going head-to-head in a complaint before the U.S. Department of Transport (DOT). The debate hinges on whether American Airlines has been wrong to withhold about 40% of fare inventory from travel agencies that fail to adopt its preferred booking technology, reports Selene Brophy, Skift's experiences reporter. Last month, American Airlines defended itself to regulators about its assertive push of the so-called new distribution capability while accusing travel agents of standing in the way of innovation. Skift asked ASTA for the group's response, which it published on Monday exclusively. ASTA said, “What's lacking from American Airlines's response is how atrocious their workflow is for new reservations.” “We fully support the adoption of modern retailing methods when the necessary technologies are ready and in place, and we're thankful for other airline partners who recognize that and have taken a more responsible approach.” The complaint is under review by U.S. regulators, with a response expected next year. Finally, Travelport said Monday that it had raised $570 million in new equity from investors, writes Skift tech reporter Justin Dawes. The world's third-largest travel technology company will add new major backers, including Davidson Kempner Capital Management and Canyon Partners, to its existing equity stakeholders, Siris Capital and Elliott Investment Management. With this new investment, Travelport will have a stronger balance sheet with the least debt amongst its peers, it said. Travelport competes with larger peers Amadeus and Sabre in helping travel agencies book flights from airlines. Once again, as with the other two stories of the day, the travel industry waits for regulators to decide what to do.
What's cookin everyone!Welcome BACK to the flight attendant forum! If you are new the flight attendant forum, I want to offer a very warm welcome to you as this is a platform for flight attendants, pilots and all crew within the aviation industry! However, this also serves as a travel community whether you are voracious traveler or just someone who wants to know a little behind the scenes about what it is like working for an airline! This weeks episode, I delve into the recent events that occurred on Horizon Air Flight 2059 regarding a pilot who was riding on the jump seat in the cockpit and all details entailed within. While this weeks episode is a solo episode, I wanted to shine spotlight not only on what the likely vibe was during this emergency, but to highlight the importance of mental health in a career field that is mostly spent away from home. Moreover, I will be teaming up with Megan in the future as well as other friends/colleagues of mine to dissect this further. For now, I wanted to simply open up the can of uncomfortable worms, so to speak, regarding mental health and the impact it can have on being a flight attendant/pilot. Thanks for listening as always!!Talk soonColin :)

On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Oct. 24 at 7 a.m. CT: RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — 85-year-old Yocheved Lifshitz, one of two Israelis freed by Hamas on Monday, spoke of her captivity. Appearing weak in a wheelchair and speaking softly, Lifshitz told reporters Tuesday that the militants beat her with sticks, bruising her ribs and making it hard to breathe as they kidnapped her. Lifshitz, whose husband remains a hostage, said conditions were kept clean and she received medical care, including medication. PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — An off-duty pilot riding in the cockpit of a Horizon Air passenger jet tried to shut down the engines in midflight. It happened Sunday on a flight from Everett, Washington, to San Francisco. The plane diverted to Portland, Oregon, where it was met by law enforcement officers. Alaska Airlines, which owns Horizon, said Monday that the crew reported “a credible security threat related to an authorized occupant in the flight deck jump seat" — one of its pilots, who was off duty. Authorities in Oregon identified the man as Joseph David Emerson. The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office says he is being held on 83 counts each of attempted murder and reckless endangerment and one count of endangering an aircraft. BERLIN (AP) — German authorities say two cargo ships have collided in the North Sea off the German coast and one vessel apparently sank. One sailor died and four are missing. Germany's Central Command for Maritime Emergencies said the ships, Polesie and Verity, collided early on Tuesday morning about 22 kilometers, about 14 miles, southwest of the island of Helgoland. One of the ships, the British-flagged Verity, is believed to have sunk. Two sailors were rescued. Vessels supporting the rescue effort included a cruise ship that has doctors on board and could treat people if needed. DENVER (AP) — A former National Security Agency employee from Colorado has pleaded guilty to trying to sell classified information to Russia. Under a plea agreement approved by a federal judge on Monday, prosecutors agreed to not ask for more than about 22 years in prison for 31-year-old Jareh Sebastian Dalke if he follows the terms of the deal. He will be sentenced in April, but the judge will ultimately decide the sentence. The Army veteran faces up to a possible life sentence for allegedly giving the information to an undercover FBI agent who prosecutors say Dalke believed was a Russian agent. The Rangers are going to the World Series, the Diamondbacks and Phillies are going to a game 7 in the NLCS, Kirk Cousins leads the Vikings to a win, and Giannis Antetokounmpo agrees to an extension with the Bucks. Correspondent Chuck Freimund reports. On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Oct. 23 at 4 p.m. CT: RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — The International Committee of the Red Cross says Hamas militants have released two hostages it had been holding captive in the Gaza Strip. It was the second time the group has freed hostages seized in its bloody Oct. 7 cross-border incursion into Israel. The hostages were identified by Israeli media as Yocheved Lifshitz and Nurit Cooper of the Israeli kibbutz of Nir Oz. A U.S. official said Monday that Washington has advised Israel to delay a possible ground invasion to allow more time to try and secure the release of more hostages. Palestinian officials and witnesses say heavy airstrikes across Gaza demolished buildings, killing hundreds of people. DETROIT (AP) — Investigators say they have identified several people of interest in the fatal stabbing of a Detroit synagogue president. Authorities found 40-year-old Samantha Woll's body outside her home early Saturday. Detroit Police Chief James E. White said during a news conference Monday that Woll attended a wedding Friday night and left the celebration around 12:30 a.m. He says there was no sign that anyone forced their way into her home. He says investigators have identified a number of people of interest, but that they believe a suspect acted alone. Woll led the Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue. Police have repeatedly said they found no evidence that her killing was motivated by antisemitism. WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says the dozens of U.S. technology hubs President Joe Biden is announcing will help communities across the country become centers of innovation critical to its competitiveness. Biden is designating 31 technology hubs that reach 32 states and Puerto Rico. The tech hubs are designed to help spur innovation in industries concentrated in these areas and to create jobs. The Democratic president announced the tech hubs Monday. The tech hubs are the result of a process the Commerce Department launched in May for cities to share $500 million in grants. The hubs tie into Biden's economic message that people should able to find good jobs wherever they live. CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — A man who was living in a tent in the woods has been convicted of murder in the fatal shooting of a retired New Hampshire couple who were out for a walk. After deliberating for a day and a half, the jury on Monday found 27-year-old Logan Clegg guilty of second-degree murder in the April 2022 killings of Stephen and Djeswende Reid. They were killed while walking on a trail near their apartment in Concord. Clegg lived near the trail. He was arrested in Vermont in October 2022. His lawyers said he left the state because he was hiding from police due to a probation violation, not because of the Reids' deaths. Clegg faces up to life in prison. NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey has returned to a New York City federal court and entered a not guilty plea to a charge alleging he conspired to act as an agent of the Egyptian government. The Democratic former chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee entered the plea on Monday. Menendez stepped down from his powerful post on the Senate committee after he was criminally charged last month with other conspiracy counts. Those charges allege Menendez and his wife accepted bribes from three New Jersey businessmen in exchange for his assistance. Menendez has vowed to prove his innocence. MILLEN, Ga. (AP) — A body found wrapped in plastic inside a Georgia dumpster 35 years ago has been identified as that of a South Korean woman. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Monday that they used DNA analysis to determine that 26-year-old Chong Un Kim was the person whose body was discovered in rural Millen in February 1988. Kim died from asphyxiation, but it's unclear whether someone killed her or who dumped her body. Investigators say Kim lived for several years in Hinesville, 70 miles south of Millen. Her body was found wrapped with plastic inside a suitcase. Investigators say Kim had been dead four to seven days when her body was found. KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) — A decade after swimming nonstop for more than two straight days from Cuba to Florida, Diana Nyad has returned to the Key West beach where she completed her epic journey. Nyad and her former support team helped mark the swim's 10th anniversary Sunday by helping return a rehabilitated sea turtle to the Atlantic. Nearly 2,000 people had lined the beach on Labor Day 2013 to welcome Nyad as she came ashore after swimming for 52 hours and 54 minutes across the Florida Straits from Havana — a distance of 111 miles. She succeeded on her fifth attempt at the age of 64. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Federal authorities have unsealed charges against four men in the theft earlier this year of more than 2 million dimes from a tractor-trailer that had picked up the coins from the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia. Authorities have said the driver was bound for Miami on April 13 when he pulled into a parking lot to sleep. They say thieves raided the truck overnight, stealing a portion of the $750,000 in dimes — a shipment weighing six tons. The heist left thousands of coins scattered over the lot. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports four defendants face conspiracy, robbery, theft of government money and other charges that were unsealed Monday. The United Auto Workers union has once again escalated its strikes against Detroit Three automakers, this time adding a factory that makes Ram pickup trucks for Stellantis. The union says in a statement that 6,800 members walked out Monday morning at the Sterling Heights, Michigan, Assembly Plant, a huge profit center for the company. The move came just three days after union President Shawn Fain reported progress in talks with General Motors and Stellantis but said the companies will have to make better offers. No progress was reported with Ford. The union went on strike Sept. 15 at one assembly plant from each company. About 40,800 workers are now on strike against all three automakers. MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The United States has renewed a warning that it would defend the Philippines in case of an armed attack after Chinese ships blocked and collided with two Filipino vessels in the South China Sea. Philippine diplomats summoned a Chinese Embassy official in Manila on Monday for a strongly worded protest following Sunday's collisions off Second Thomas Shoal, which is also claimed by China. No injuries were reported but the Philippine ships reported damage. China has blamed the Philippines for the collisions saying the vessels were carrying construction materials to strengthen the Philippine outpost at the shoal. The Philippines and other neighbors of China have resisted Beijing's sweeping territorial claims over virtually the entire South China Sea. COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Anti-abortion groups seeking to build opposition to a reproductive rights measure in Ohio are messaging heavily around a term for an abortion procedure that hasn't been legal in the U.S. for over 15 years. The opposition campaign and top Republicans increasingly reference partial-birth abortions in ads, debates and public statements. The abortion opponents say partial-birth abortions are an imminent threat if voters approve the constitutional amendment Nov. 7. Partial-birth abortion is a non-medical term for a federally prohibited procedure known as dilation and extraction. Abortion rights group Pro-Choice Ohio says talk of partial-birth abortions is a scare tactic. Constitutional scholars say the amendment would not override the existing federal ban if Ohio voters approve it. Patty Loveless, Bob McDill and Tanya Tucker were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame on Sunday in Nashville. —The Associated Press About this program Host Terry Lipshetz is a senior producer for Lee Enterprises. This will be a 7-part series where I'll be asking them about their lives as Dads and we'll talk about what their experiences have been like so far in our amazing group of family men with businesses, not businessmen with families. I hope you'll check out these conversations with some badass members of our community each week. And don't be afraid to share these episodes with your friends and let us know your thoughts along the way! For anyone that isn't already a Front Row Dads member, you can sign up right here: Join The Brotherhood! Here's what you need to know about today's guest, Ben Golden. Kristian Nylund is father to Adeline (7) and Stella (5) and resides in Spokane, Washington with his girlfriend Kelly. Growing up with Norwegian immigrant parents who chased the American dream, he learned from an early age that taking risks is vital to success. Having traveled overseas to visit family multiple times throughout his childhood, he developed a love for flying and a passion for traveling/aviation. Kristian started his first flying job at a regional airline (Horizon Air) in 2006, and throughout the next decade accumulated enough flight time flying for airlines and private aircraft owners to get hired at his dream job flying for Delta Air Lines. He is currently a Captain on the Airbus 220 based in Seattle. With the freedom and scheduling flexibility an airline career can offer, it opened the door to find a new challenge in business ownership and real estate investing. In 2020, Kristian acquired a flight school and aircraft maintenance shop in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. As Co-Owner and Chief Flight Instructor of Coeur d'Alene Aviation & Maintenance, he spends his time teaching and mentoring students and flight instructors to become pilots and future aviation professionals. Outside of aviation, Kristian and Kelly have taken an interest in real estate investing and have recently acquired multiple properties for both short and long-term rentals in Washington and Northern Idaho. After enduring a divorce and battling alcohol addiction for years, Kristian has embarked on a path to sobriety, dived deep into emotional healing, and dedicated his time to what is most important; becoming the best father, significant other, and person he can be. Want to learn more about Front Row Dads? We are in the business of building better families. While most dads would say that family matters most, the challenge is they feel guilty knowing their careers get the best of them, and their family seems to get the rest of them. We help Dads become family men with businesses, not businessmen who have families, so they can thrive personally AND professionally. It's about as hard as it's ever been to run a regional airline right now, and Horizon Air President Joe Sprague took the reins in late 2019, just before the industry began to unravel. Joe sat with me to talk about the challenges Horizon has faced, and exactly how it has gone about facing them.

Join Greg in discussing the new flight academy brought to us by Alaska Airlines, the updated FAA legal interpretations, the NTSB's conclusions on the Joby crash, and the FAA's decision to release the grounding of the 777. Alaska Airlines and its regional airline, Horizon Air, have launched a flight academy The school is partnered with Hillsboro Aero Academy in Oregon. Students will earn private through commercial, and a contingent job offer to become a first officer at Horizon Air. Horizon operates the Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 and the Embraer 175. https://thepointsguy.com/news/alaska-airlines-horizon-air-ascend-pilot-academy/ Joby's eVTOL crash was due to a component failure says the NTSB. The aircraft did not have anyone in it, and was involved in a post-crash fire. ADS-B data shows that the aircraft hit 275MPH during testing prior to the crash, and was traveling at 114kts at the time of the crash. https://www.avweb.com/aviation-news/ntsb-says-component-failure-caused-joby-crash/ The FAA is finalizing its airworthiness directive that will lift the grounding of 777s with Pratt and Whitney PW4000s This engine type was the one that experienced an unconfined failure over Colorado in February of 2021. Welcome to new Patreon Producer ANDREW ROBERTON JAGUAR LAND ROVER INTEND TO JOIN TESLA'S EU CO2 POOL FOR 2021 - Tesla have found a new partner to join its EU CO2 pool for 2021. British-based and Tata owned Jaguar Land Rover intend to form a CO2 pool with the Elon Musk-run company for 2021, alongside Honda that were part of Tesla's pool last year. - Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) under the shadow of the semiconductor shortage have likely concluded that they are more willing to derail their CO2 compliance targets in order to help their underlying profits from their higher emitting profitable models than sacrifice these in order to meet their compliance targets. - JLR also intend to join the Tesla/Honda UK-only pool for 2021 according to UK government data. - This is the first year UK only CO2 targets – largely carried over from the European system – will be enforced following the transition period which ended at the end of 2020. Last year JLR failed to meet its EU CO2 obligation goal, attributing 35 million GBP to fines for this according to JLR. According to the ambitious "Dealer Community Charging Program," GM and its dealers will work together to expand access to charging in local communities, including in underserved, rural and urban areas where EV charging access is often limited. - Involving dealers in this program is a logical approach seeing as nearly 90 percent of the US population lives within 10 miles (16 km) of a GM dealership, according to the automaker. GM will be giving each of its EV dealers up to 10 Ultium Level 2 destination charging stations and will be working with them to deploy the chargers at key locations throughout their local communities. - these charging stations will be available to all EV customers Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/543214/gm-dealers-40000-ultium-chargers - The "Ultium" brand name of GM's all-new EV platform, propulsion components and charging ecosystem will soon expand to include a family of three Ultium Chargers for residential and commercial use developed with leading vehicle charging specialist CTEK. - The Ultium Chargers will include an 11.5 kilowatt/48-amp smart charger, 11.5 kW/48-amp premium smart charger and a 19.2 kW/80-amp premium smart charger. The two premium models include a customizable touchscreen and an embedded camera. All three Ultium chargers are Energy Star Certified, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. Each charger features dynamic load balancing and can be upgraded over time through over-the-air software updates with automatic download capabilities. - To help offset the cost of installing a home charger, customers will be able to roll the price into their GM vehicle financing or leasing plans. A special rule on this was already softened in June due to the lack of available EV models. - Now the situation has apparently worsened due to the electric boom and the chip shortage: Volkswagen just informed its approximately 18,000 managers that electric and hybrid models will “probably not be available for order” as company cars until the end of 2022. Tesla was #2 on the list with 15.9% of sales, and Stellantis was 3rd with 13.2%.” “Aside from Volkswagen Group and Tesla, Stellantis (13.2% of BEV sales), the Hyundai–Kia collab (11.9% of BEV sales), and the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance (10.3% of BEV sales) are above 10% of the BEV sales in these 10 countries. These electric buses would replace existing diesel vehicles within STC's Canadian fleet. ZeroAvia's goal is to deploy it initially on small private planes, eventually working up to 76-seat regional aircraft like the Q400 that flies for Alaska's Horizon Air subsidiary. - Alaska said it will collaborate with ZeroAvia to scale up its technology to produce a system capable of powering the Q400 with a range of 500 miles. Captain Kisa Wiley is the Chief Pilot at the Seattle Base of Horizon Air. Horizon Air is a subsidiary of the Alaska Air Group, and the airline coordinates its schedules and traffic feed with Alaska Airlines. Captain Wiley is a third-generation pilot. Her Dad, retired Captain Jim Wiley, had a long career with Alaska Airlines. Her Grandfather, the Late Colonel Jim Wiley, was a Tuskegee Airman who flew combat missions in Europe during World War 2. Kisa had no interest in becoming a pilot until she was in college. Then, one day, her younger sister, Ali, talked her into attending private pilot ground school. Kisa fell in love with flying, and the rest was history.

The goal was to find ways to better educate the community on local Indigenous people's history. Mary Big-Bull Lewis led the session. To start, Mary asked members of the board this - What's something people here know about local Native American facts. Silence followed Big Bull Lewis's question. Board President Laura Jaecks noted that she isn't really up to speed on the history. Big Bull-Lewis is the owner of Wenatchi Wear, and a member of the Colville Confederated Tribes and a descendant of the Blackfoot Tribe. Just understanding and learning is really important in order to create a positive change. Big Bull-Lewis shared local history about treaties left unhonored, the White River Massacre and how U.S. boarding schools attempted to erase Native culture — all examples of how Native Americans have been oppressed. It was said that it's not an easy topic and it can be uncomfortable, but it is part of the process of changing. The other part is about recognizing why there are gaps in Native American history. Board members at the workshop picked up a handout on land acknowledgment with resources on creating a space for Indigenous people. Wenatchee Superintendent Paul Gordon said he was blown away by his lack of knowledge after first hearing the presentation by Big Bull-Lewis. Gordon emphasized that this is a great first step in the building of our knowledge. He continued to say that the history is really recent and is still impacting a number of Indigenous community members. At the end of the workshop, Big Bull-Lewis' asked board members what the school district can do to create purposeful land recognition. The board agreed they could improve education on Indigenous history and suggested ideas such as having a school assembly on Native Americans, recognizing Wenatchee's Native student population and adding to the school district curriculum. Well, that's where the Swarm Team Dispatch comes in. They're members of the North-Central Washington Beekeepers Association who volunteer to capture rogue bee swarms and relocate them to permanent colonies. At the heart of the operation is Dispatch Lead Teri McGarr. McGarr fields calls and coordinates beekeeper response. When she gets a call from the public or from RiverCom he figures out who's closest. Then, she'll send them out. The Swarm Team started its Facebook Group and began more formally coordinating last year. McGarr says now, they're slammed every day. Honeybees usually swarm between late spring and early summer. It's commonly caused by overcrowding in an existing hive. With a second queen in tow, the swarm will look for a suitable place to form a second colony. The Swarm Team most often responds to swarms that have landed on a tree branch or fencepost close to a building. But if you see them, don't spray them — they're not interested in stinging or attacking people according to McGarr. If you just leave them alone, they'll move on. Beekeepers have a few tools at their disposal to wrangle a swarm. They use spray bottles of sugar water and floral-scented baits to lure them to a box. And the most effective method is finding the queen and gently placing her in the hive. -- Before we go, some local history, Wenatchee Valley History is brought to you by NABUR [this is pronounced just like neighbor] – your trusted neighborhood community. Their intrepid enterprise began all the way in Misawa, Japan and ended 41 hours later (!) in East Wenatchee. In 1945, Northwest Airlines became the first commercial airline to offer service from the airport. Today, service is provided by Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air on a runway that was extended to 7,000 feet in 2016. - Thanks for listening. The research into the last episode of the now infamos Horizon Air theft and subsequent crash on Ketron Island led me down another path that resulted into me wanting to tell the story of another famous island in Washington State: McNeil Island. Located in very close proximity to Ketron Island, McNeil was once a federal penitentiary that housed Mafia era gangsters, an infamous ornithologist, a presidential candidate, and a future cult leader! After relinquishing federal control of the island to Washington State, it finally ceased to be a prison and subject of the department of corrections, and now houses a highly controverial "rehabilitation" center for the states highest level sex offenders. Faced with lawsuits, maintenence challenges, and an astronimical budgetary requirement, we ae faced with several qustions. Do we continue to allocate resources to it? Do we open a new facility in a more budget friendly, mainland location? Do we cease the entire program alltogether and release the most abhorrent of offenders back into the population? And is the Now-DSHS run program operating according to its mandate and actually running a successful program, or is it violating basic human rights laws, misapropriating funds, and "warehousing" residents as opposed to working toward actual solutions. You be the judge!
