The early 2000s were many things: 9/11, camera phones, government surveillance, MSN Messenger, low-rise jeans, Big Brother and the most extra horror films you can think of. ★★★★ out of ★★★★★ Intensity:
"Scream 4" is a commendable addition to the franchise that successfully balances nostalgia with a modern twist. It captures the essence of what made the original films so beloved while addressing contemporary issues within the horror genre. Although it may not reach the heights of the original "Scream," it offers enough thrills, humor, and social commentary to satisfy both longtime fans and newcomers alike. The film stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the "Scream" series and its ability to adapt to the changing landscape of horror cinema.

Learn more about your ad choices. While this installment attempts to capture the magic of its predecessors, it often feels like a shadow of what once was. We'll explore the film's self-referential humor, uneven pacing, and the challenges of continuing a beloved franchise. With a mix of nostalgia and critique, we'll discuss how "Scream 3" fits into Craven's legacy and whether it manages to deliver the thrills fans expect.
The Scariest Movie EVER Made? Well upon its initial release forty-five years ago, not many critics saw it that way INCLUDING the author of the original novel which this film was based on, Stephen King. But over time, this psychological thriller directed by the late, great Stanley Kubrick (2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, Eyes Wide Shut) has garnerned not only a devoted following but a never-ending stream of speculation about what it meant. Many love it for the memorable main lead performance by Oscar-winner Jack Nicholson (Chinatown, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, Batman) as Jack Torrance, an aspiring writer whose family ends up situated at a VERY remote location known as the Overlook Hotel....he's an aspiring writer but as the winter progresses, he starts to lose his mind. Also with him are his beleaguered wife Wendy played by the late, great Shelley Duvall (Popeye, 3 Women, Roxanne) and their young son Danny (Danny Lloyd) who has begun to experience a sort of psychic power known as.....THE SHINING. :o Also co-starring Scatman Crothers, Joe Turkel, and Barry Nelson, this horror classic has launched spin-off documentaries, weak imitations, and loads of memes - let's head to the Overlook Hotel! Boys and ghouls, allow me to tell you about the mad doctor who injects himself with an experimental serum, turning the scientist into a hideous monster that terrorizes a hospital. This twisted tale is from the mind of Richard Lyford, a 19-year-old indie filmmaker in Seattle, who wrote, directed and starred in the short horror film The Scalpel. But he wasn’t influenced by horror legends like John Carpenter or Wes Craven or George Romero. No, The Scalpel was filmed in 1936, and film historians considered it lost for almost 90 years. It’s now been restored and re-edited, and been accepted to more than 150 film festivals throughout the country. By the time he was 20 years old, Seattle amateur filmmaker Richard Lyford had already made nine films, including “The Scalpel.” Lyford wrote, directed, starred in and made the silent horror movie in 1936 when he was still in his teens. The film also showcased Lyford’s skills with makeup and early cinematic special effects, which he used to transform himself into a Dr. Jekyll-like scientist who experiments on himself with gruesome and tragic results. According to Seattle composer and producer Ed Hartman, “The Scalpel” was never publicly shown, apart from a handful of screenings to friends and family and an amateur film club. But thanks to Hartman, who led the restoration of the film and composed a new soundtrack for it, “The Scalpel” is now being shown in its entirety for the first time in nearly 90 years. It will have its Portland premiere on Saturday at the Clinton Street Theater during the Portland Horror Film Festival. Hartman joins us to talk about Lyford’s legacy, restoring this hidden gem of the horror genre and what lessons it offers to budding filmmakers.
