Negotiating anything in life can make even the most socially robust entrepreneurs break out in cold sweats. Many of us are not born with negotiation skills but have to learn how to persuade our audience to be on our side. Learning excellent negotiation skills can take your career to the next level by negotiating a significant raise at your annual performance review. Negotiating a raise is so much easier than negotiating hostage situations like our next guest has while working with the FBI. In this episode, we talk to Chris Voss, also known as “The Master Negotiator.” Chris retired as the lead international kidnapping negotiator for the FBI, is the CEO of the Black Swan Group, and is the author of the national bestseller Never Split the Difference: Negotiating as If Your Life Depended on It, which was one of Darius's favorite books. Drawing on his FBI experiences where the stakes are high, Chris Voss's company, The Black Swan Group, specializes in solving business communication problems using hostage negotiation solutions. Their negotiation methodology focuses on discovering the “black swans,” small pieces of information that have a huge effect on an outcome. The biggest surprise is learning the tactics behind negotiating a business deal are very similar to negotiating with a barricaded gunman for the lives of hostages. Don't miss this thrilling episode! What Darius discusses with Chris Voss: How to be an effective negotiator for anything How information gathering can give you an edge in the negotiation game What it takes to subtly convince someone to have it your way What small things make the biggest impact in negotiations How to diffuse a situation by calling out the negative How emotions drive human behavior, not logic The Black Swan Rule: Treat others not the way you want to be treated but the way they want to be treated Common mistakes in negotiating Why you are 31% smarter with a positive mindset Why curiosity is a superpower. The Emotional Intelli-Gents Podcast: Navigating Leadership with Emotional intelligence
One thing is universally true, that in life, and at work, the ability to negotiate and advocate for one's own position is a critical skill. In Episode 8 of the Emotional Intelli-Gents Podcast Ismail and Sameer discuss the edge high EQ leaders have when negotiating. Leveraging core EQ skills like self-awareness, social awareness, openness, and desire to reach common goals, emotionally intelligent leaders are able to control the emotional shockwaves that negotiations often cause. The headlining emotion and focus of EP08 is on the use of empathy to drive compromise when negotiating. The episode will define the true essence of empathy, and explain the concept of ‘tactical' empathy, and how to employ this technique to gain an advantage in your next negotiation. Empathy is defined by Harvard Law Professor Robert Mnookin as the the process of demonstrating an accurate, nonjudgmental understanding of the other side's needs, issues and perspectives. The Black Swan Group led by Chris Voss, former FBI hostage negotiator defines ‘tactical' empathy as … The premise is that Tactical Empathy is the act of understanding another persons' mindset and feelings and making them feel understood. The episode will teach you practical ways to use empathy to understand the emotions and perceptions that are driving someone's actions, and enable you to be more equipped to influence their behavior in an organic and lasting way. [Note: This is a previously broadcast episode from the vault that we felt deserved a fresh pass through your earholes!] What We Discuss with Chase Hughes: What is The Behavioral Table of the Elements and how can we use it to determine the likelihood that someone is telling us the truth? Why Chase considers polygraph tests “just about as accurate as a coin toss” — and how they’re actually biased against people who tell the truth. What someone training to spot deception indicators and stress might learn from watching Conan O’Brien interviews. How training ourselves to be subconsciously aware of truth signals clues us in when someone who’s lying deviates from them. How to hack authority for influence and personal development. Today I'm speaking with Daniel Kniaz, CEO and Founder of DiviPay In this episode, we talk about . . . Building entrepreneurial and start-up skills and base knowledge of FinTech while working in the Westpac Innovation Team. Left due to slight frustration of what they built never made it to market, and they felt (‘they' being the other future co-founder of DiviPay) could move faster and learn a lot, going out on their own. Daniel shares the journey of DiviPay and how it works. It's always been about virtual cards, though needed to pivot several times to solve the pain points of SMB and meet the demands of paying consumers. We have an interesting conversation exploring the accounting and start-up relationship and how accountants need to communicate their value to start-ups (who don't have a lot of money). After this, he joined the FBI, where he became their leading kidnapping negotiator. This role brought him face-to-face with bank robbers, gang leaders, and terrorists. He is now the CEO of The Black Swan Group Ltd, which offers negotiation training for businesses and individuals. Chris is also an adjunct professor at Georgetown University and a lecturer at the Marshall School of Business at the University of South Carolina. Introduction https://geni.us/split-free-audiobook (Never Split the Difference) calls on Chris Voss' FBI career as their top hostage negotiator. Specifically, it equips readers with the negotiating skills needed to secure business deals. Chris suggests that logic and reason are not generally effective in producing productive negotiations. Instead, tactical empathy is the key to success, especially in complicated negotiations. This book aims to help people control negotiations with humans, rather than assume the other party is a robot. StoryShot #1: The New Rules Chris Voss describes negotiation as a process of trying to convince others of your approach to a topic. So, negotiation is a type of communication that requires a specific outcome. Negotiation is built on the assumption that humans want to be accepted and understood. Subsequently, being an active listener is an effective way to show acceptance and empathy toward the other party in the negotiation. One negotiation technique is to become an intelligent negotiator who focuses on logic and math. In reality, humans are not always convinced by rationality, and we generally do not accept comments based on logic alone. So Chris rejects this approach. Negotiation has been a topic of study since the 1970s. Still, it was only recently that psychologists like Kahneman and Tversky identified that we all have a habit of adopting cognitive biases. These cognitive biases lead to irrationality. These cognitive biases are relatively common. So, if we can better understand human negotiation psychology, we can become more successful negotiators.

Key Takeaways: “China as a market is incredibly confusing. So, people have this sort of confusion of, "Where should we start? What should we do?" And then they also have a real fear of it because of their feeling of a lack of knowledge, and also some of the stories that they may have heard from other people that perhaps were not that successful.” - Heidi Dugan “When people come to the China market, because they don't know the culture and the market, they think, ‘Well, we don't know anything.’ And what happens in those circumstances, they put all good business knowledge to the side, and they do some really silly things, like handing their brand, even their product over to someone they don't know, to let strangers market them to China.” - Heidi Dugan People / Resources Mentioned: The ONE Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results by Gary Keller Never Split the Difference: Negotiating as If Your Life Depended on It by Chris Voss The Greatest Salesman in the World by Og Mandino Ways to Connect with Heidi Dugan: Website: https://www.heididugan.com/china-accelerator LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/heidi-dugan/ WeChat: HeidiDugan Ways to Connect with Howard Whiteson: Website: http://www.wealthwithoutborders.net Podcast: https://wealthwithoutborders.net/podcast/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/howardwhiteson

On this episode of Blunt Force Truth, Chuck and Mark are joined by Chris Voss. Chris spent 24 years working for the FBI as the lead international kidnapping negotiator and is a bestselling author. He has some great insight into President Trump's negotiation tactics and our nation's foreign relations. They start off today's show by discussing President Trump's willingness to get his hands dirty and do the negotiations himself. Their explanation includes his hard nose tactics and maintaining relationships with our allies. Mark asks if Republicans are good negotiators, and they expand on this to discuss the differences between Republicans, Democrats and President Trump. They break down some of Trump's key negotiations during his presidency. Also, Chuck and Mark ask Chris about planning a negotiation and how he approached each situation. Chuck and Mark related some of the approaches Chris used to the President's negotiations for the border wall and immigration. They finish up by getting a short lesson on the tactics Chris used during his career. Chuck and Mark ask him about some of the ways these tactics can eliminate tense situations in everyday life. Also, Chris explains how many hurt themselves during a negotiation. Chris Voss spent 24 years in the FBI and was the FBI’s lead international kidnapping and hostage negotiator for 4 years. He was an Instructor of International Business Negotiation at Harvard and is an Adjunct Professor at Georgetown and University of Southern California MBA programs. He is author of Never Split the Difference: Negotiating as If Your Life Depended on It. He founded the Black Swan Group which is a negotiating consulting firm that applies his field tested lessons of hostage, crisis and kidnapping negotiation to the business negotiation world. Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll learn: [0:24] Jeremy’s introduction of this episode and his guest, Christopher Voss. [1:59] Kidnapping in the Philippines and how the bad guys complimented Chris’ negotiation team. [10:36] How Chris learned to use “that’s right” as a powerful negotiating technique. [13:46] How empathy fits into the task of negotiation. [19:46] Why champions practice and what it means for negotiations. [24:40] The skill of labeling in a negotiation setting. [31:58] Using mirroring to get people ready to respond or chat. [35:17] Chris’ childhood and growing up in Iowa. [39:26] The steps Chris takes to prepare himself for a negotiation. [46:41] Why there is always leverage in any negotiation. [51:35] How Chris chose his co-author and stories not included in the book. [53:40] Why people are hesitant to let the other side go first. [56:59] The lowest point in Chris’ career and how he pushed through. [59:49] How to connect with Chris and find more about negotiation tactics. In this episode… Negotiation tactics may sound like some kind of manipulative ploy to get people to do what you want, but Christopher Voss, one of the FBI’s most successful hostage negotiators in history, says that negotiation is not about manipulation, it’s about understanding the person on the other side of the conversation. In this interview, you’ll hear Chris unpack that definition and learn some very basic but powerful negotiations tactics that you can use in everyday life. Getting the person you are talking with to the point of saying “That’s right” is a pivotal point in any negotiation. It’s the point when you know that you’ve understood their side of the argument and that they are beginning to feel that you are someone who genuinely wants to help them. Find out how to use the “that’s right” principle to advance your negotiations on this episode. Christopher Voss says that one of the simplest but most powerful negotiation tactics the average person can learn is the practice of labeling. It’s learning a specific way to re-express what has been said to you that disarms and deflates the tension in the conversation, enabling you to get further in your negotiation. You can find out how to use labeling and what it can mean for your next business deal in this conversation. You’ve heard it said that you want to get to “Yes” in business negotiations. But Chris Voss says it’s more important to get to “no.” When a person is able to respond to you with a “no” answer, it gives them a sense of power and leverage that will lead them to tell more of what is really on their mind instead of keeping up a facade of control and composure. It’s an amazing negotiation tactic that yields great results. Did you know that putting yourself into a positive mindset before any conversation will enable you to more effectively deal with the conversation? A positive mood will make you 31% more effective in processing information, hearing what others are saying, and having an impact on the conversation in a positive way. You can learn how to do it on this episode of Inspired Insider.
