The relationship between the games and screen sectors has never been closer, and with the Aussie games industry generating over $608.5 million in revenue, games storytelling is hitting a new boss level. In the first of this microseries, we get the lowdown on the indie games space from Screen Australia Head of Games Joey Egger and Ari Harrison of Umbrella. With over 25 years supporting indie films and tv on the global stage, Umbrella have recently launched a gaming distribution arm, Umbrella Gaming, with their first title Pro Jank Footy due for release in 2026. Egger and Harrison discuss the intersection between the screen and games sectors, the challenges and opportunities facing both indie markets and how both industries can optimise potential through creative IP.
In episode 576 of 'Coffee with Butterscotch,' the brothers kick off the closed beta for How Many Dudes and dig into what they're actually trying to learn from it. Then the conversation pivots hard into the AI hype cycle, unpacking why GitHub Copilot's switch to usage-based billing just handed a hundred-times-larger bill to the developers who went all in, and what that says about where this whole thing is headed.Support How Many Dudes!Official Website: https://www.bscotch.net/games/how-many-dudesTrailer Teaser: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgQM1SceEpISteam Wishlist: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3934270/How_Many_Dudes00:00 Cold Open00:29 Introduction and Welcome01:22 Closed Beta for How Many Dudes08:15 Game Balancing: Challenges and Techniques12:25 Evaluating Enemy Strength and Player Progression18:27 Beta Test Goals and What They're Looking For27:00 Pivot to AI and the Tech Landscape29:32 How LLMs Actually Work32:08 Agentic Programming Explained37:08 The AI First Company Myth40:02 Slot Machine Development44:18 GitHub Copilot's Usage-Based Billing50:34 The Dependency Trap53:11 Where This All Ends Up57:15 The Cost Reckoning Begins01:00:01 What Comes After the CollapseTo stay up to date with all of our buttery goodness subscribe to the podcast on Apple podcasts (apple.co/1LxNEnk) or wherever you get your audio goodness. There are two Matts on this show! But only for a second, then one Matt turns back into PushingUpRoses. We talk about a ridiculous YouTuber-inspired creationist movie, Improvised Shakespeare, and trying to manifest a meet-cute. Capital Creative Showcase brought Sacramento's creative scene together, and this episode captures the energy right from the floor. Frank sits down with four different creators working across video games and tabletop games, giving listeners a closer look at how indie teams build, test, balance, and refine their projects. The episode features Kim from Ghost Hunter Simulator, Sarah from Wizard Cleaning Simulator, Keoni from Seize Gilded Treasures, and Mike from Legends of the Arena. Each conversation highlights a different side of development, from player choice and cozy horror to small-team production, card balance, community building, character design, and why live playtesting matters so much for creators. Timestamps and Topics 00:00 Capital Creative Showcase recap and event overview 01:09 Interview: Kim on Ghost Hunter Simulator and player choice 15:17 Interview: Sarah on Wizard Cleaning Simulator and small-team indie development 24:59 Interview: Keoni on Seize Gilded Treasures, card balance, and community building 41:37 Interview: Mike on Legends of the Arena and building a Smash-inspired tabletop game 52:30 Final thoughts on CCS, playtesting, and Sacramento's creator community Key Takeaways Capital Creative Showcase gave local video game and tabletop developers a space to show their work, gather feedback, and connect directly with players. Ghost Hunter Simulator stands out by letting players decide whether ghosts are real, changing how they interpret evidence and approach the game. Wizard Cleaning Simulator started from a game jam idea and grew into a cozy magical cleaning game built by a small art-focused team. Seize Gilded Treasures blends trading card game mechanics with board movement, creating a strategy layer where positioning matters as much as card text. Legends of the Arena aims to capture the feel of a fast, competitive fighting game in a tabletop format built around reads, anticipation, and quick matches. Across all four interviews, playtesting comes through as one of the biggest tools for improving balance, clarity, pacing, and player experience. Memorable Quotes "If we wanted this game to exist, it had to be us." "Indie games get to be so much more experimental." "We joke that the three of us make one junior programmer." "The difference between this and a lot of other trading card games was the tabletop and the fact that we're able to move." Episode Description (the version that goes in podcast players)New York City has tripled gaming industry jobs since 2008. The average wage is now 14% above the citywide average. Over half of NYC's game studios are indie teams of five or fewer. And almost nobody outside the city knows it.In this episode of Player Driven, Greg Posner sits down with Alia Jones-Harvey, Associate Commissioner of Education and Workforce Development at the New York City Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment, to talk about how the city is quietly building a connected gaming ecosystem — from K-12 students competing inside Minecraft, to CTE high schools running state-approved game design curriculum, to City College's bachelor's degree in game design housed in the school of arts. They cover Battle of the Boroughs, the NYC Video Game Festival on May 9, the Summer of Games initiative, and why community is the through-line that ties all of it together. If you work in gaming on the East Coast, this episode reframes what's possible.Topics coveredNYC gaming industry, NYC Video Game Festival, Battle of the Boroughs, Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment, MOME, NYC esports, game design education, K-12 gaming programs, Minecraft education, indie game development NYC, CTE schools, City College game design, Summer of Games NYC, Made in NY digital games, NYC workforce development gaming, East Coast gaming industry, gaming jobs NYC, indie studios New York, gaming community building, Convene Brookfield Place, collegiate esports NYCAbout the guestAlia Jones-Harvey is the Associate Commissioner of Education and Workforce Development at the New York City Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME). Indie Game Movement - The podcast about the business and marketing of indie games.
Building an indie game takes more than funding alone. It also takes support, resources, and a path to market. But too often, those pieces get tied to a single assumption: finding a publisher. So in this episode, we unpack that mindset and explore how developers can think more strategically about funding, partnerships, and building a more sustainable path forward that's grounded in action and not assumption. My newsletter: https://simonowens.substack.com/ Robbie Daymond is best known as a prolific voice actor, the kind of performer whose work spans anime, video games, and animation without ever putting his face front and center. After slowly breaking into the industry in the late 2000s and early 2010s, he built a rare, multi-disciplinary voiceover career—one that includes everything from audiobooks to major gaming franchises. He also spends up to 30 weekends a year attending fan conventions where he engages directly with audiences in what has quietly become one of the most lucrative and meaningful parts of his business. That creator-first ethos has increasingly shaped his ambitions beyond acting. In recent years, Daymond co-founded Sassy Chap Games, an independent studio that turned a quirky concept into one of the fastest-selling dating sims ever, fueled largely by viral user-generated content rather than traditional marketing. The project offers a window into how modern creative careers are evolving by blending IP ownership with direct-to-consumer distribution models. In a recent interview, Robbie explained how fan conventions have quietly become a major revenue engine for creators, why you don't always need a huge social media presence to build a large audience, and how revenue-sharing models can unlock top-tier creative talent.
In episode 565 of 'Coffee with Butterscotch,' the brothers dig into Nvidia's DLSS 5 and what AI-driven graphics enhancements actually mean for developers and players alike, then turn a critical eye on who the AI hype cycle is really serving, players and devs, or the tech companies and C-suites pushing it. The conversation closes on whether the push for realism is starting to cost games their authenticity.Support How Many Dudes!Official Website: https://www.bscotch.net/games/how-many-dudesTrailer Teaser: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgQM1SceEpISteam Wishlist: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3934270/How_Many_Dudes00:00 Cold Open00:42 Introduction and Welcome01:42 PAX East updates05:42 How Many Dudes: Game Development Insights14:25 DLSS 5: Understanding New Technology21:45 Generative AI in Gaming: A New Era29:07 The Backlash Against AI-Driven Graphics34:41 Authenticity vs. Inauthenticity in Gaming42:29 The Diminishing Returns of Realism in Games44:21 The Balance of Visual Fidelity and Gameplay48:18 Creative Bankruptcy in the Tech Industry51:14 The Dangers of Dependency on Technology59:04 The Consequences of Automation on Personal GrowthTo stay up to date with all of our buttery goodness subscribe to the podcast on Apple podcasts (apple.co/1LxNEnk) or wherever you get your audio goodness. In episode 564 of 'Coffee with Butterscotch,' the brothers get into the real friction behind self-publishing on Steam and how they're building their way out of it. They introduce LudoKit, a tool designed to wrangle store pages, localization, and credits management without losing your mind, drawing on lessons from shipping Crashlands 2. The conversation then shifts to How Many Dudes, where meta progression, ensemble mechanics, and balancing randomness with player control are all on the table.Support How Many Dudes!Official Website: https://www.bscotch.net/games/how-many-dudesTrailer Teaser: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgQM1SceEpISteam Wishlist: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3934270/How_Many_Dudes00:00 Cold Open00:42 Introduction and Welcome01:57 The Need for Efficient Game Release Management07:46 Navigating the Complexities of Game Launch09:49 LudoKit: A Tool for Streamlining Game Publishing12:35 The Importance of Credits Management in Game Development17:39 Challenges in Collecting and Managing Game Credits24:11 Technical Challenges in Game Development29:33 Streamlining the Credits Process33:40 The Importance of Accurate Credits39:32 LudoKit: A Game Development Tool47:22 Future Plans for LudoKit49:53 Meta Progression and Player Engagement53:39 Balancing Exploration and Strategy59:29 Innovations in Gameplay Mechanics01:09:19 Final Thoughts on Game DevelopmentTo stay up to date with all of our buttery goodness subscribe to the podcast on Apple podcasts (apple.co/1LxNEnk) or wherever you get your audio goodness.
