Why does a card sit relatively unnoticed for years and then suddenly explode? And more importantly, can you spot it before everybody else does? In Part 3 of our Sports Cards Live conversation, Jeff Hart joins Jeremy Lee and David Chase to explore the idea of a card having its "moment." Sometimes it's an influencer bringing attention to something overlooked. Sometimes it's a record sale. Sometimes collectors get priced out of one card and start looking for the next logical alternative. And sometimes a sleeping giant simply reaches the critical mass required for the hobby to finally notice it. We get into the cards and categories we believe could still be hiding in plain sight. Jeremy explains why he recently bought the 1977 Star Wars Princess Leia, why he believes vintage Exquisite football featuring all-time greats like Peyton Manning and Barry Sanders may be dramatically underappreciated compared to basketball, and how getting priced out of one card can lead collectors toward the next opportunity. David takes the same approach to Larry Doby, Satchel Paige, Sandy Koufax and Roberto Clemente, and explains why he believes Diego Maradona may be lagging behind the other giants of soccer collecting. They introduce the film (1:10), with an overview of the story, the cast, and filmmakers, and review the 20-80 baseball scouting grades for rating the film, with a new metaphor (7:10). Amount of Baseball (11:43) praises the substance and variety of the baseball scenes, with their good emphasis on defense and attention to detail. Baseball Accuracy (21:13) bemoans the lack of acknowledgement for Cecil Cantrell as the Shohei Ohtani player manager of the Alabama-Florida league. Other things about the Class D Alabama-Florida league are correct, except the existence of the Dothan Cardinals in 1957, and the Browns spring training in 1946. Do pitchers ever become catchers? A historic dive into Smoky Joe Wood, Bob Feller, and the possibility of Stud Cantrell and Stan Musial coming up together. There are both mathematical and factual problems with the number of games that the Class D League played, and Brown's RBI total (w/r/t Hack Wilson record). Joe Lewis Brown resonances with Joe Lewis, Jackie Robinson, and Jack Johnson. This movie has appropriate disdain for the intentional walk, but falls victim to a common baseball film error. A rare corresponding roster move doesn't quite pan out. Storytelling (57:55) comments on the skillful exposition and braiding of human and baseball storytelling, along with growth for the major characters, and the classical comedy double wedding ending. Did the Cardinals sign off on this? Delicacy of dealing with racial issues in a comedy. What do they have on Stud? Why wreck the car? Plus other unanswered questions. The Score Tool (1:26:36) suffers from the problem of an 80s score in a movie about the 50s. Eric dives in on Hank Williams' "Long Gone," and the hymns in the film. Acting (1:35:07) discusses the performances of Virginia Madsen, William Petersen, Larry Riley, Dermot Mulroney, Henry Gibson, Teller, Robert Easton, Edward Blatchford, and Ronn Allen. Delightfulness of Catcher (1:45:53) assesses the superb Joe Lewis Brown, played by Larry Riley. Delightfulness of Announcer (1:47:14) is non-zero. Lack of Misogyny (1:48:25) considers the misogyny displayed in the actions and words of Stud Cantrell, and, to a lesser extent, Jamie, as balanced with their growth. For more than 40 years, the Chicago Charities College All-Star Game occupied a singular place on the annual football calendar. Each summer, the nation's top graduating college players took on the reigning NFL champions before packed crowds at Chicago's Soldier Field and a national television audience. Played 42 times between 1934 and 1976, the game became an unlikely bridge between college football and the NFL during some of the sport's most transformative years. In "College All-Stars vs. NFL Champions: The Chicago Charities Football Games," sports historian Warren Rogan ("Sports' Forgotten Heroes") explores the history, personalities and enduring legacy of this forgotten football institution. Conceived by Chicago Tribune sports editor Arch Ward during the Great Depression, the game began as a way to help promote a young NFL still seeking to establish itself alongside the far more popular college game. Over the years, it became much more than an exhibition. The series raised more than $4 million for Chicago charities and featured future stars from the worlds of sports, politics and public life, including Kenny Washington, Jackie Robinson, future US President Gerald Ford & eventual US Supreme Court Justice Byron "Whizzer" White. From its inaugural 0–0 tie against George Halas's Chicago Bears in 1934 to the College All-Stars' memorable victory over Vince Lombardi's Green Bay Packers in 1963, the game produced its share of unforgettable moments before coming to an abrupt, rain-soaked end in 1976. Today on Louisiana Considered, we listen to an episode of a new podcast, “American Colony,” all about the history of Puerto Rico. In this episode produced by WWNO's Alana Schreiber, we dive into baseball history on the archipelago, specifically how the sport was shaped by Black American baseball players. During the golden age of the Negro Leagues, the biggest stars came to play in Puerto Rico. Whether you love them or hate them, the Boston Red Sox are the talk of MLB. Between their slow start and now their 15-game winning streak, people don't really know what to make of the BoSox. In full disclosure, I am not a Red Sox fan. I'm an O's fan, and the Sox are in the AL East, so that is their first strike. They are also the last team to integrate -- which has always struck me the wrong way. The Red Sox integrated their team after Jackie Robinson retired. That's wild. And let's not get into the complicated (AKA racist) relationship the Boston fans have with Black players on their team, and that of their opponents. All of that to say, I'm not a Sox fan. But things are looking up. And when I look at the Red Sox prospect list -- I get excited. The Sox feature three African-American pitching arms within the top 10 of their prospect list: #2 Anthony Eyanson, #4 Kyson Witherspoon, and #7 Marcus Phillips. All three come from big SEC programs. Witherspoon and Phillips are 2025 1st Round draft picks, and Eyanson is a 3rd rounder of the same draft class. All possess elite stuff. Witherspoon and Phillips are both in A+ ball, while Eyanson has rocketed to AA and pitched in the 2026 Futures Game. The future in Boston is not only bright, but it may be Black.

In Episode 38, DDSWTNP talk to John Duvall, a major scholar of DeLillo, author of a 2002 reader's guide to Underworld, and expert especially on how DeLillo's 1992 novella “Pafko at the Wall” became, five years later, the Prologue, “The Triumph of Death.” In examining the 1951 Giants/Dodgers game and the Soviets' bomb test, we discuss with Duvall in great detail the issues of race and racism in the portrayal of fourteen-year-old Cotter Martin, winner of the struggle for Bobby Thomson's home run ball, as well as the major difference made by DeLillo's change of the very last word of “Pafko” in Underworld: “It is all falling indelibly into the now”? Or “into the past”? Throughout this episode, Duvall gives us a rare critical glimpse at DeLillo as editor of his sentences and scenes. He speaks also to the mythologizing effects of baseball, what it means to aestheticize politics in DeLillo's representations, DeLillo's relationship to E. L. Doctorow's work, and the competing visions of ideology and history embodied in FBI director J. Edgar Hoover and metafictional radio man Russ Hodges. Not only that, but Duvall has several intriguing, “paranoid” stories to tell about his correspondence with the author and how it's possible his interpretations of “Pafko” in a 1995 journal article might have directly influenced some of DeLillo's revisions as he shaped it into Underworld's opening. Trump’s vile, multi-religion blasphemous Easter post is the operative part “Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge day… “There will be nothing like it… “You’ll be living in Hell… "Just watch…” All that was followed four hours and 35 minutes later by quote “Tuesday 8:00 PM Eastern Time," plus phone calls to his media stenographers: If there’s no deal Monday he’s quote “blowing up the whole country” and “I am blowing up everything over there." What that is, is at least a threat to use tactical nuclear weapons against Iran. Even if it’s JUST a threat, or the “nuclear” part is hyperbole, it is still a threat to use massive amounts of conventional ordnance but Trump of course has longed to use nuclear weapons since the first term, asking his generals why we had them if we didn’t use them. He wants to. He's a sadist who wants to see people die. And of course, he IS crazy: “I know him… and… he has gone insane.” Marjorie Taylor Greene said that. Oh and her postscript, as she joined our Club Reality: “Our president is not a Christian.” This is still all about the Strait of Hormuz, which Trump said was irrelevant and would open itself and about which he has held 28 public positions in the last 35 days. So here we are. Tomorrow is either TACO Tuesday or Thermonuclear Tuesday. THE ALTERNATIVE VIEW: This is Trump's fault regardless, but could he have been manipulated into it by a soft-rollout Military Coup against the civilian government, led by Hegseth and the other religious nuts in the Pentagon? And when did this America actually go off the rails? You can point at the day Trump came down the escalator it didn't extend to hell. You could look at the sign-on of Fox News Channel. Just as relevant: January 19, 2009 and one of the last decisions by a President-Elect who taught future Republican leaders that the laws would not be enforced against them. B-Block (48:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Jeff Shell, who is one of the two people primarily responsible for scuttling my planned return to MSNBC in 2019-20-21, is about to get fired as a network president for the second time in three years.
