In the digital age, it's important to teach students how to use technology as a tool in order to learn and not be left behind. When applied in tandem with design thinking, we can start to teach students how to solve problems in a new and innovative way. Jon Corippo co-founded and developed a series of instructional lesson frames called EduProtocols that are designed to engage students in learning through the 4 C's: 1. Critical thinking 2. Collaboration 3. Communication 4. Creativity EduProtocols were created to address the need for students to engage in deeper learning using technology as a tool instead of an automation device. Since then, hundreds of classrooms have been converted to Four Cs centered instruction. Jon is the brains behind the extremely popular Eduprotocols. He has been recognised as a County Teacher of the Year, a National School Boards Association 20 to Watch Educator, an Apple Distinguished Educator, a Google Certified Innovator, and a Microsoft Innovative Educator. Jon has a decade of experience in K-8 education, including building a 1-1 project-based high school and serving in two county offices as Assistant Superintendent and IT Director. Hello everyone! A few weeks ago, I woke up in a snarky mood. In this mood, I scrolled through Twitter and came across this video from Jon Corippo. I responded by saying something along the lines of "this has nearly 0 educational value..." or something like that. Well, Jon responded, we talked, and now he is on the show! And... I have to be honest, he changed my mind. Not all that glitters is gold, but some things are. In part two of our talk we discuss: How tech can be used to amplify workshop teaching Used to cover and review ground Why many programs are atrocious How teacher expertise is being undermined by bad programs and policy in schools ...and so much more! You do NOT want to miss this one! This episode is sponsored by Heinemann—the leading publisher of professional books and resources for educators—and their professional book, The Power of Teaching Vulnerably: How Risk-Taking Transforms Student Engagement by David Rockower. In The Power of Teaching Vulnerably, David Rockower illustrates the transformational impact on student learning that results when teachers lean into their own discomfort and share personal stories, write with their students, and navigate difficult classroom conversations. David unpacks three dimensions of what it means to teach with vulnerability (personal, relational, and dialogic), shows what each of these dimensions look like in the classroom, and offers action steps to get started. Billions of dollars are spent annually on promising education technology solutions, but how many are delivering an ROI in the form of improved student outcomes? Often, the way to determine the best tools is to ensure alignment with teaching best practices and research-based approaches. When we rely on the right data and involve all stakeholders in the process, we can implement high-impact, innovative ideas at scale. Dr. Sonny Magana and Jon Corippo are this episode's expert guests to talk through these topics. Sonny is an online learning pioneer who served as founding principal of Washington state's first CyberSchool. He is an Oxford Research Scholar, award-winning teacher, and best-selling author whose latest book is Disruptive Classroom Technologies. Jon is a former teacher, assistant superintendent and IT director who has been recognized as a 20 to Watch Educator by the NSBA, a Top 100 Influencer in the 2019 EdTech Digest Awards and a 2020 Edtech Digest Awards Trendsetter. He also served as Chief Learning Officer of CUE and co-authored the Eduprotocol Field Guide Books 1 and 2. MindRocket Media Group chats with Jon and Sonny about the type of collaboration between technology leaders, school administrators and teachers that leads to the best learning outcomes; how to implement high-impact ideas that simultaneously reduce teacher workload and avoid the risk of “initiative fatigue”; how to evaluate the research on given tools and approaches to see what data is worthwhile; and more. Both Jon and Sonny deliver ideas that can help districts involve all stakeholders, gain buy-in at each level, and implement innovative technology at scale. On this episode, I welcome Jon Corippo, Chief Learning Officer at CUE, as we discuss how to use EduProtocols to save time and increase learning in your classroom. Eduprotocols are classroom-tested customizable lesson-frames for any subject or grade to break up clichéd lesson plans, build culture, and deliver content to K-12 students in a supportive, creative environment. Jon has made it his life’s mission to find ways to engage and inspire his students while saving himself time and energy on unnecessary routines. Together with his co-author Marlena Hebern, he has created a wonderful field guide on creative ways to use technology and engage the classroom. Jon was amazing to talk to about where education is going and why engaging students and coaching them versus solely lecturing them is the key to lifelong learning habits. We discuss was to implement the protocols in your classroom and why worksheets clog up your grading pile and your time. Get rid of the meaningless workshop and get your students creating! You won’t want to miss Jon’s amazing analogy on why his favorite protocols are like brisket and mac and cheese. Stay tuned to the end to learn what’s coming up next for the EduProtocols. Jon is an impressive resource with awesome ideas on how to increase engagement and decrease busywork. Let me know what you think about his strategies for increased learning! Jon Corippo joined Business Casual to discuss the need for education that provides life skills to students. While the educational curriculum has not changed markedly for many students over the years, the world around the classroom has rapidly changed. This dynamic begs the question of whether the tools students need to be equipped with for the real world need to be updated. Whether it is financial literacy, better media savvy in the digital age, or even bucking outdated research on studies like the importance of breakfast, students have different needs today than in the past. Cue, Inc Chief Learning Officer Jon Corippo joined Business Casual on Friday, Aug. 2 to discuss where he sees holes in modern education and the impact that might create on society. Tune in to Business Casual, MarketScale's live radio broadcast, every Friday at 8 a.m. CST.
We all have in our minds what a classroom looks like—desks, structure, all eyes to the whiteboard, or screens at the front. While technology has undoubtedly woven its way into the modern classroom, has it truly enhanced the experience of students? What's next in revolutionizing the 21st-century classroom? To offer some insights on this, we're joined by educator Jon Corippo, Chief Learning Officer at CUE. CUE is a nonprofit, professional organization for teachers in California and Nevada with a goal of sharing ways to teach better. Corippo has been an educator for about 20 years, coming to it as a "third career with the intent of helping kids have a better experience." This, for him, meant redefining classrooms. "We have an event called BOLD, which stands for blended and online lesson design, which focuses on helping teachers create better lessons," Corippo said. "But beyond the training and curriculum is the design of the classroom. We had some expert designers come in and take over a classroom. So, we got rid of the desks." No desks in the classroom? It seemed like a strange choice, but for Corippo it was a logical change. "So, we as a county have spent billions on new curriculum and training, but we still don't have the results we want. Maybe the key is the environment. I saw this great documentary on PBS about a classroom with no desks, just whiteboards for each student. The teacher could interact much differently with the students. It changed the dynamic, and her students' test scores went up," he said. This became the catalyst for the idea of the racetrack classroom. "The racetrack classroom takes the desk out of the equation but still gives students somewhere to put their laptops. We've got whiteboards along the perimeter, and each student has a bar height table that's also a whiteboard for their technology. Then, we've got two 75" touchscreens and a projector," Corippo said. "I call it a racetrack because the teacher can simply move around in circles interacting with kids in a whole new way. Kids are more visible, and the teacher can access them better," he said. Of course, none of this is possible without finding the right partners that value the impact that technology can have when implemented correctly in the classroom. That's where Boxlight has stepped up and made an impact. "Boxlight came in and gave us two, 75-inch touch screens and this super-rad, short-throw projector set up," Corippo said. This helped increase the extent to which the classroom was able to act as an interactive environment, encouraging students to interact and learn on a more natural level.

Jon Corippo describes himself as a “formerly disgruntled student.” He made it almost all the way through school at a 2.9 GPA. His final three semesters in Advertising changed everything, though: Advertising classes were project based. Jon's grades shot to nearly 4.0. Also while at Fresno State, Jon served as a graduate assistant football coach, learning about leadership and teaching at the feet of Jim Sweeney. Jon graduated college with no intention of teaching. After about 7 years in non-educational jobs, Jon's amazing wife persuaded him to try his hand in education: he was hooked after just two days as a long-term sub on an emergency credential. About 20 years later, Jon had served a decade at the K-8 level, opened a 1-1, PBL, Google-based high school, served in two county offices, including as an Assistant Superintendent and It Director. Jon has been recognized a County Teacher of the Year, a 20 to Watch Educator by the NSBA, and was a finalist in the EdTech Digest Awards. Jon also holds the Apple Distinguished Educator, Google Certified Innovator, and Microsoft Innovative Educator badges. Jon is very proud of his work with CUE, where he currently serves as the Executive Director. His work with CUE includes creating the CUE Rock Star concept of Professional Development, with a focus on hands-on learning and getting teachers connected via social media. Cue Rock Star Camps now include Admin, TOSA, Teacher and Specialized Editions for core areas. Jon has lead the development of the very successful CUE Launch program, and the well received CUE BOLD Symposium. Under Jon's leadership, CUE professional learning has trained over 30,000 educators in only two years. Jon lives in Coarsegold, California, near Yosemite, with his wife (a very successful educator), three children and a random number of free-range chickens. A little about Marlena Hebern: The greatest compliment Marlena ever received was from a former visually challenged student, who said, "Mrs. Hebern didn't care that I was going blind." Over eighteen years teaching students from kindergarten through eighth grade, and the "opportunity' class Marlena learned that classroom culture is the number one most important thing in order to set students up for success. Great lesson design is close second. Marlena's lessons are often focused on student creativity and developing a student's sense of self-worth and community. Marlena is a Google Certified Innovator, Google Trainer, and EdCamp Yosemite co-founder. She holds a Master of Science degree in reading instruction and has been awarded a Beginning Teacher Support Provider of the Year Award. Contact Marlena Hebern: Twitter: @mhebern A little about Jon Corippo: “I was a 2.9gpa student all the way through K-8. Then HS. Then the first 3/5 of college. That's when it all changed for me as a student. We started doing the work, making the things and really getting to work. I started out as a teacher who thought getting through the book was the end-all, be-all. I was so wrong. The EduProtocol Field Guide is the result of almost 20 years in education, the vast majority of it being without textbooks.
