Do you know what happens to your brain when you are sleeping? In a sense, a cleaning crew gets in there to clean out all the toxins so that your brain works better the next day. I know it sounds weird but it is exactly what happens. Listen as I begin this episode with that explanation. http://ens-newswire.com/2013/10/18/brain-cleans-itself-of-toxins-during-sleep/ Failure is often part of success. In fact, most great breakthrough ideas fail first and then get modified before they became a success. It often happens multiple times. Being open to learning from those early failures and being able to adapt your ideas is what helps make ideas prosper according to Safi Bahcall. Safi is a physicist and biotech entrepreneur and author of the book, Loonshots: How to Nurture the Crazy Ideas that Win Wars, Cure Diseases and Transform Industries (https://amzn.to/2GsXA8u). Listen as Safi offers insight and great examples of how important inventions and breakthroughs have happened by learning from failure and how we all can do it. Often the reason you get upset or stressed out is because things aren't the way you think they SHOULD be… Traffic should not be so heavy, your doctor should not keep you waiting – that type of thing. Listen as I explore how to change that thinking to relieve yourself of unnecessary frustration. http://www.bakadesuyo.com/2015/04/frustrated/ When I think of compulsive behavior, I think of people who wash their hands a lot or check to see if they locked the door or turned off the coffee pot 50 times a day. While that seems to be extreme compulsive behavior, how is it any different than checking your smart phone 86 times a day? (That's the average). Science writer Sharon Begley has explored this in her book Just Can't Stop: An Investigation of Compulsion (https://amzn.to/2IAUnHj). She joins me to reveal why compulsive behavior isn't necessarily bad and explains at what point it does become a problem and what to do about it. PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS! So we can, I can enter later life and a little bit better health and feeling better than what I do now. So what, you know, we bring things, different things that we're doing from time to time, but we also bring different guests with different perspectives. And we're very happy today to have Olivier Mankonda. He is a speaker, an author, weight loss coach, wellness coach with a passion for self help books. He empowers people with the knowledge of plant-based nutrition, so that they can make good dietary and lifestyle choices. Through his talks. He's been able to inspire and change a lot of people. And Olivier, welcome to the show. And he is the author of the plant-based nutrition, how's it going to change your life, and it's a very impressive book. So thanks for taking time out of your day to be with us, Olivier. Olivier  01:07 Thanks very much for having me. Yeah. And Roy Barker  01:10 so you know, we talked a couple of weeks ago, and you know, me and Terry, have been kicking around this, you know, more of that plant based trying not maybe not getting rid of meat totally, but trying to move away from eating so much. Because our, you know, especially where we live here in Texas barbecue and beef, it's really big. But, you know, it can weigh me down for two or three days after I eat it, it seems like and so we actually have given this plant based nutrition, with the intermittent fasting a little bit of a world this week. So we're excited to have you on and, you know, be able to ask you some questions that have come up for us. So kind of tell us before we get started, though, how did you find yourself here? What What made you explore plant based and kind of jump into that? with both feet? Olivier  02:04 Yeah, it's such it's happened a little bit. I didn't plan to do it. Okay. It was just one day. It was a sudden, Wednesday, I was watching YouTube video. And there was a ninja Yogi, his name is Sadhguru. And he was talking about the meat. We're saying that meat was not designed for the human mechanism. And it was the message was so powerful that I decided that I will go ahead and try it. And it was like I said, it was a Wednesday and I spoke to my wife and I told her that I will stop eating meat. And on Thursday, I went to work. And when I came back and asked you to cook me my last meal of meat, and it's been five years of not starch meat anymore. Wow. So I've stopped all the dairy product or most of the processed food. And it's been like that. So it was not like I was expecting something. It's just because I watched that program and I made my decision. Roy Barker  03:06 Okay, yeah. And you have for those that haven't seen the book yet, we number one wants you to go out, pick up a copy. It's a great book. But on the cover, you have a before and after photos of yourself, which is really incredible. If you don't mind sharing, I don't want to get too personal. But about how much weight did you lose between these two photos? Olivier  03:28 Yeah, so on that photo, my original weight was 100 kilo, which is 220 pounds. Okay, and I lost something like 77 pounds. So now my weight is 143 pounds. Roy Barker  03:47 Oh, Holy smokes. Yeah. Olivier  03:49 So and I lose that in just nine months. Okay, okay. Roy Barker  03:54 Yeah. So So let's take us through this just a little bit. Because the other twist I think, is, if I'm not wrong, that you have is that it's not just plant based, but it's also this intermittent fasting that you do on top of that. So can you kind of walk us through what your day looks like? I'm sorry, Terry. I didn't mean to interrupt. You Terry  04:12 know, I was gonna say he said it was nine months and we we talked about it or it's like he had a baby. And birthday. Olivier  04:21 Yeah. So what I do, basically, is that when I wake up in the morning, I don't eat nothing. So I only eats twice, twice a day. So in a week, I've got 14 meals and in the at 12 eat just fruit. And at 7pm I eat either a fruit or a salad, or I eat cooked food. So I've got a 14 meals out of those 14 meals. 11 are row so it's fruit salad, and only three cooked meals. And why do that? It's because When you eat raw, your body doesn't have to produce some type of enzymes, because all these raw food ivali got these enzymes, and your body doesn't have to produce that. And basically, it's really soft on your body. That's why I do that. And why do I eat, I do intermittent fasting, because our bodies spend 80% of its energy, trying to digest food. And when you keep grazing, during the day, your body will not have the chance to heal and cleanse. So it's really, really important to not grace not to eat all the time, because your body can only cleanse and heal when it's not digesting food. It's like for example, if you've got your car, you take it to the garage to EBIT fix, you can't drive it at the same time. And your body, that's how the body works. You can only cleanse and heal when it's not digesting food. And that's why I only eat twice a day. And in between, I have no sack snack or things like that just water. Or sometimes I can ever make juice. That's all I do. Terry  06:17 Well, and that's what I was wondering the other day I was, you know, what the difference between the raw versus the cooked plant based food, you know, what, which one was better for you, and the explanation that you just provided? Just Can we just reiterate. So the raw helps with the digestion is just not as hard of a digest Gen process. Olivier  06:43 Yeah, so basically what happens is, when you eat raw food, raw food, I've already got a lot of enzymes, okay, but when you eat them, your body will not have to produce those enzymes. And it's very easy for the body to digest raw food, okay, but when you cook those food, there's a lot of enzyme that your body will have to produce lots of enzymes, and a lot of nutrients as well are destroyed during the cooking stage. Right. That's why it's always better to eat raw food. But I don't want to completely stop with the roof. Sorry, the cook food. That's why I only eat fried cooked food during the week. Okay, all the rest is raw. Okay. Yeah, Roy Barker  07:29 yeah, that's interesting, because I've heard that over time, especially with vegetables is that when we cook them, we actually cook a lot of the goodness out of them as well. So that's another good thing about eating the raw. So the other thing that we you know, in our preliminary talk we talked about was milk. And it's funny, because I did a little research and was just, you know, and there's a lot of research on both sides. I know that but the piece that I was reading was a scientist, actually, that was saying, We are one of the only mammals that drinks milk after our infancy, I guess, you know, after we get weaned off of food, that back in the olden days, that, you know, we people quit drinking milk, but one reason that they they went to it is because it's high caloric. And it was easy to get. And it's basically like if you were hurt or something you had, you know, goat's milk or whatever available to you. But they said that that was a definite shift in our body mechanics, you know, from, I guess, during this evolution process that really, if you drink milk at our age, it should make you sick. Olivier  08:43 Yeah. So what's really happened is that, when you look as well, you will see that human beings is the only species in the entire creation to drink milk from another species, you will never ever see that you will never see for example, cats drinking dogs milk for goats drinking cow's milk, because every milk is specific to his own species. So for example, if you look at the rabbit milk, it contains 10 times more proteins than the human milk. And why is that? It's because when the baby rapid is born is so small, that they need to double it size within the first week, if they want to sustain life. If you look at the seals, milkweed content 40% fat, because the baby seal need to build up fat very quickly because it's very cold in the North Pole. Okay, you look at the human milk, it contain lots of lactalbumin because we need to produce amino acid. And you look at the cow's milk, it contains lots of casein. So you can see that every milk is specific to his own species. And when you drink cow's milk, because the Wonder cow is born is in weight, something like five stone or 30 kilos. And after three months, you need to triple that weight. That's why in the cosmos, you've got to loads and loads of calcium. And when we people will drink cow's milk, our body will analyze and see that now we've got too much calcium. And when we go to relate, we're going to lose that excess calcium to the expense of our own calcium. And in the cosmic as well, you got loads of phosphorus. And again, our body will have to neutralize that phosphorus. And to do so it's going to leech off the calcium from our bones and our muscles. And that's why you will see a lot of people suffer from osteoporosis, which is a condition which make your bone brittle, and you start suffering from the inflammation of the joints. And you will see that in the countries where the milk intake is very high, you will see a high incidence of osteoporosis as well. Interesting. And you will see as well that human beings are the only species as well will drink milk when they're adults, you will never see any grown animal drinking milk. And there's an enzyme which is called lactase, which enables people to digest the milk. And when we reach the age between two and four years old, that enzyme says to be produced, which is suggestive that we need to stop drinking milk. And that's why you will see that 70% of the world population is lactose intolerant. Wow, we'll see that. Yeah. And when you drink cow's milk, it's going to give you a lot of diseases such as anemia, ear infection, eczema, asthma, osteoporosis, cancer, obesity, appendicitis, you got lots of all of these diseases. And there's another thing as well is that when we drink cow's milk, boys and girls will go through puberty at a very early age. And when you go through puberty at a very early age, your body will start producing estrogen in excess, and an increase of estrogen is linked to cancer. And that's why you will see in the future, later on in life, these girls will start suffering from breast cancer, uterus cancer, ovarian cancer, and for boys, it's going to be prostate cancer, cancer, you can see that the dairy products are really not designed for the human mechanism. Roy Barker  12:04 So what so what about in, I guess in the world and in our world, like, and we're you know, we're based in America, you're based in the UK? Is that correct? Olivier  12:14 Yes. Yeah. So Roy Barker  12:15 now, what about across the world? Do are Americans the ones that drink a lot of milk? Or is there a lot of animal milk consumed across the world? Olivier  12:26 Yeah, we did, I would imagine that it's mostly in America, Canada, and in the your European countries where the milk intake is very high. Okay, for example, if you go in Africa, you don't really drink that much. And you can see that the incidence of osteoporosis is less in this Africa, in Asia and stuff like that. So it's mostly in European countries, and in America and Canada, where you got really that problem. Roy Barker  12:56 So one of our challenges, I think, is, you know, of course, we, we are heavily, you know, protein focused is kind of where we're coming from. And so, you know, moving into plant based, I know that, you know, there's soy and beans and a lot of other stuff that you can gain protein, but kind of talk, talk through that process. Because, you know, as we did this, this week, we mixed in some beans with our salad. And, you know, we're trying to be conscious about getting, because it's not highly concentrated like beef, you know, trying to work it in wherever we could. So tell us a little bit about how do you work in enough protein in your diet? And then of course, some of those sources, where you get that from? Olivier  13:40 Yeah, for example, the example that I like to give to people is that when you look, for example, at the elephant, is the biggest land animal on earth is not deficient in protein. But where does he get this protein from? Just from the green study, it's okay, you look at the gorila, we should 99% of the same DNA. But what do go really eat, they eat fruit, vegetables and tender roots, they do not eat meat. And you can see that the gorilla is very powerful. So if you want to get your protein, what you need to do, you just need to eat lots of legumes like beans, lentils, chickpeas, peas, all this stuff, spinach, and you will your requirement of protein will be met. You don't have to worry about all these things. You just have to eat all this stuff, all those legumes and stuff, and you will not have no problem at all. It's like me, I've been on eating this way for five years. And I'm not deficient in protein. It's just gotten in the environment that we live in. They've stressed a lot of butter, protein, everyone needs to need a lot of meat and stuff like that, but that's really not what we should be doing. We should Getting those protein from plants. Roy Barker  15:03 Yeah, and I was looking at because I looked, I was doing a little research on this as well. The other thing that we lose, I think when we when we take protein is the is iron if I'm not correct, but if we eat the spinach and kale, we more than make up for any iron deficiencies that might, you know, we may see across that and it was an interesting article. And I'll just put this out there to see if you've read this guy or if you know about it, but he was talking about one thing about our teeth, that we're not carnivores because it well we weren't designed to be total carnivores because if you look at our teeth structure, we don't have the fangs for you know, ripping flesh and things like the big cats that eat meat do. And and then he also talked about our digestive system. I think that meat eaters have very short digestive systems, where ours is fairly lengthy. And then the opposite side, he was talking about that. We're not totally plant either, because our because of our teeth again, but our digestive systems weren't long enough. So it's, it's some interesting concepts to think about the way that our bodies are designed and the way that we eat today. Not that they are totally all, you know, in line with that, but the Do you even keep up with how many proteins that you may get in a day, do you? No, no, no. Okay. Olivier  16:34 Do any calorie counts? I don't do any protein count. What I do is just I need a balanced diet. Yeah, I try to eat every not attracted. Every day. I need fruit. I eat fruit every single day. Because like I said, At noon, when I eat it's always fruit. Alright, so I eat a variety of fruits. And at night. We'll have for example, a salad with lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, onions and stuff like that. Or I will cook maybe some potatoes with beans and spinach, or maybe some brown rice with mushrooms, lentils and Tempe, something like that. So I don't keep track of my protein intake because I know that what it will be okay with that. Okay. Roy Barker  17:22 Do you eat? tofu? Yeah. Do you eat? Do you work tofu into your diet as well? at the tip? Yes. Olivier  17:30 Yes, I do have a temper. Yes, definitely. Yeah. Oh, that's a sign that the tofu has got lots of protein as well. The tofu and the Tempe got lots of protein. Yeah. Roy Barker  17:40 Can you explain what the Tim I don't know what TMP is just. Olivier  17:44 It's just it's a little bit like tofu. It's made with soya beans. Okay. Yeah, it's basically the same process that they use. Okay. It's just a texture. It's different, or the taste is a little bit different. But it's done with soybeans. Okay. Roy Barker  18:01 I guess I should ask Terry, do I know what that is? Have we had? I don't know, maybe. Terry  18:07 There's so many different types. You know, I was gonna ask you so. So when you started your journey, your plant based journey? What was what were the reasonings? I mean, I know that you you wanted to lose some weight. Did you have some certain health issues that you wanted to address? And then see maybe if you could deal with those instead of taking medication deal with those with the plants? What was behind that? Olivier  18:40 Yeah, like I said, I didn't know anything about the plant based nutrition. It's just when I watched that program, I and I decided that I will go ahead with that. But in the meantime, I had lots of health problem. I was suffering from high blood pressure. I had a massive headache every day or every other day. And the ad was so bad that that was me all the time. Dangerous chest pain, back pain, abscesses, john pain. So all this was really bad. And what happened is that when I changed my way of eating, after a week, I lost 11 pounds, just in one week. And this was very surprising for me. And four months in into the change, I went to my doctor to have my blood pressure tested. And he was surprised that I had I don't I didn't have any blood pressure problem anymore. And normally, my doctor told me that I will be on my medication for the rest of my life. But at that time when he told me that I said, No, I'm not going to take any medication. And he asked me, What are we going to do? And I said, I will try to do some sport, and I joined a karate club because I was tired. too, I thought that maybe it's going to solve the problem. But there was no changes. It's only when I stopped eating all the meat products and dairy products of this process food that my blood pressure went down. And basically all this was without any medication. And for the past five years, I've not been sick a single day, not even the flu. Nothing. So my my hair is. 20:29 Wow, okay. Terry  20:31 That's, that is awesome. Yeah. Olivier  20:33 When you look, for example, my brother as well, my brother has been able to follow that path as well. He's been able to lose. I think it's 73 pounds, that is being able to lose. And it was a he had a blood pressure as well, he was pre diabetic. And he had a psoriasis, which is a skin condition. And the doctor told him that he will have that for the rest of his life. And he had the psoriasis for eight years. But when I introduced him to this plant based nutrition, all these problems were gone, as well with no medication, no medication at all. And my wife as well, she has lost 99 pounds, just on this. Roy Barker  21:17 Well, you know, talking about the inflammation, I've got a, I've got a little shoulder issue that I tore some ligaments or tendons in years ago. And when I eat wrong, or don't want to say wrong, when I don't eat correctly, I can feel it restricts my movement, and I can feel the inflammation. But after doing the plant base for a couple days, I was telling Terry that the my range of motion was almost back with this thing. It's been you know, the last two or three weeks, it's been killing me and it kind of restrictive in what I can do. But it was amazing how different I felt just after a couple days of you know, eating the plant based and staying. And we really, I think we still had a little protein in our diets. And we you know, we had a refrigerator full of meat that we were trying to you know, kind of work through as we start into this but it was amazing how I felt and then and I don't know which you know, which is which but the other thing was this fasting in the morning breakfast used to be my biggest meal the one I used to look get for look forward to getting up and having. But I haven't really missed it. One thing I've done is I drink coffee, and I put a little ghee in my coffee to thicken it up. So you know, it's a, it's a good fat, but it also it's heavy enough that I really haven't been hungry in the morning. So that's been an interesting transition. And of course, I think the other great thing for myself is just at seven o'clock being done because we were used to snacking late at night nine or 10 o'clock and then go into bed with the full stomach and you know, you know how that goes. But anyway, so let's talk about the other thing I want to talk about for a minute is the volume so because in in IE any people can tend to even abuse good and healthy things. So let's just talk about you know, what kind of volume should we expect to to eat? Olivier  23:22 Yeah, so what you have to do is that like I said, when you on the plant based nutrition, you don't have to restrict your, the way you eat. So what I do is I eat as soon as I feel full stop after all you have to do and it's difficult to binge on foods, it's very difficult and because the fruit I've got loads of fibers and it's full of water you get full very quickly so it's difficult really to binge on fruit or plant based it's very difficult and so you will tend to feel old really quickly and as soon as you feel full you stop eating and that's all you have to do you don't have to look at small portions and not just it when you feel full you stop that's all you have to do. Roy Barker  24:12 So what about mixing it up because I I don't like fruits or vegetables well i like i like fruits I you know I like to eat an apple but I mean an orange or maybe a banana but vegetables not so much so I guess is it important to to be experimental to bring new fruits and vegetables into our mix so that we don't get burned out from just the you know, feeling like we just eat a banana every meal or eat an apple every meal. Olivier  24:42 Yeah, but you have to do is you have to mixed all the fruit. So you need to eat really a very approved. And yeah, that's what you have to do. And you have to incorporate that slowly because if you Stop eating lots of fruit at at one go because you're not used to it, you can have some detrimental consequences. Not in a bad way, but your body will try to detoxify quickly. And this really I had to work again, abscesses and stuff like that. Okay, yeah. But if you want to avoid that what to do is that you need to incorporate that slowly. And in the meantime, you decrease your intake of meat, dairy products, all this processed food, and at that time, you're not going to suffer from all these detoxifying symptoms. Roy Barker  25:54 Okay. Okay, great. Well, is there any other, you know, we're just getting close to wrapping up, I just want Is there any other points about plant based that you want to get out there, or, you know, some of the other great side effects that you've had from it. Olivier  26:14 That's all the side effect that I had. But in the process for this plant base as well. What I would like to add is that a lot of people, when they go on these plant based nutrition, they tend to replace that with unhealthy, vegan processed food, which is really bad as well. You can add that as a treat, but it doesn't have to be your meal that you will have to eat a lot of time because when you look at the processed food, the food that has been transformed and resemble to nothing in nature, they're essentially the manmade food. And when you look, you will see that 51% of what we eat as a rest is processed food 42%, the animal product and only 7% of fruits and vegetables. And in indoor 7%. Unfortunately, the majority, it's the potatoes to make french fries. So we eat very, very little of fresh produce, right? And when you look at those processed food, they are full of additive, calorie flavoring preservative, which are chemical substances not recognized by the body, and they create havoc. Okay. And when you look as well, you will see that in this process food, they've put us what is called aspartame, aspartame is very toxic, and it's a nerve poison, and you find Hospital in more than 10,000 products only in the supermarket. Wow. You'll find that in train gum, in drinks in solder. Ice cream, breakfast cereal in lunch product. That's why I always say to people that if they go on this plant based nutrition, yeah, they need to try it all code and avoid the processed food because the processed foods are not even vegan. Okay, Terry  28:07 yeah, just because it says vegan don't automatically assume that it's going to be healthy for you. I was looking. We like cheese. So I was looking at you know, I've been seeing a bunch of information about vegan cheeses and all of that. I mean, is there a healthy? Well, I guess it would all be processed and Roy Barker  28:26 processed. Yeah. Olivier  28:28 Yes. So for example, the even the vegan cheese their process. So for example, if I have to look this month, I mean, predated the third last month. For example, if I have to count the time that I've had the vegan cheese, it's only one slice that I bought for the whole month. Because they are still processed food, right? Yeah. Yeah, Roy Barker  28:53 I was thinking the other thing was about these vegan sausage patties. You know, anything, like you said, if they have to transform it into something that is not recognizable, probably a good sign that if you eat it, you need to eat it in limited quantities. And it's best just to go over to the vegetable while and pull the fresh fruit and vegetables run off the the stand there and just, you know, try to find a way to eat them without incorporating these because like, goodness, I don't know what Yeah, I don't know what it would take to turn a turn something into a vegetable sausage Patty, but probably probably not. Not good. Good. All right. Well, Olivier, we appreciate you. We're excited. We're excited to try this. I feel like that. You know what little we've done, has made us has made me feel better. I don't want speak for Terry, but we felt better. And it's just a matter of getting these things out of our diet and then figuring out you know, how we can incorporate the fresh fruits and vegetables. So we're looking forward to We're excited. And hopefully in a couple months, we'll reach out and have you back on and we can be your next success story. Olivier  30:08 Yeah, yeah, we'll be afraid. Very happy to do that. Yeah. Terry  30:12 Olivier, thank you so much. We really appreciate all of your insight and your story, sharing your story as explanation of all of the all of the plant based nutrition. Roy Barker  30:27 So if you don't mind, tell everybody, of course, how can they pick up a copy of your book, the plant based nutrition? How's it going to change your life? And then also, you provide coaching? So if somebody wants to reach out to you for some coaching information, how can they get ahold of you? 30:44 Yeah, if they want to get a hold of me, they can go on my website is oliviermankonda.com, that's oliviermankonda.com. And we'll be able, first of all, they can see I've got an eight step, weight loss and wellness program, that they can go on my website, and they will see that. And with that weight loss program, it's not only a weight loss program, but it's packed with lots of powerful insight that they can, if they put that in practice, they will be able to have optimal F. So it's not a diet, but it's a lifestyle change that I can expect from that. And if they want, they can read my book, they can go on Amazon. So the book is on sale on Amazon, they can have the book over there. And they can reach me as well on the if they want. They can go on YouTube, I've got a YouTube channel, where I put a lot of videos where I speak about all this stuff, where they can get all this knowledge where I share all this knowledge and you're Terry  31:48 available as a keynote speaker as well. Yeah, yeah, yes. Olivier  31:52 Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I'm doing I've been keynote speakers as well. It's just because we are locked down all the the place where I was supposed to speak, or it's been canceled. Yeah, but I speak as well. I'm a speaker so people can reach out as well. If they want me to speak in their event. Yeah. 32:11 Okay. That's great. Awesome. We all reach out. I know you can and we will put the spelling of your name and website up on our show notes as well when people can reach out and find you. So thanks again. Like I said, we're looking forward to it. Y'all reach out to Olivier and let him give you a hand if you're thinking about the plant-based nutrition. So that's going to do it for another episode of Feeding Fatty. Of course, I am Roy stary. And you can find us at www.feedingfatty.com we're on all the major social media platforms as well as a live video of this episode will go up on YouTube once the episode goes live. In this episode, we talk with Guy Robinson, the founder and CEO of the Coalition Agency based in London, England. We also discuss how his company found a new way of creating live productions that attract a new audience in a format not previously considered the norm when it comes to concerts. Guy shares his experience in pivoting to run the first ever drive through live theater shows during the pandemic. He also explains how he handles the logistical challenges faced from putting on large scale pop up events at various locations, and how he overcame them, along with the impact of Covid, and how his company successfully adapted in response to the pandemic. Today I am so excited to introduce you to Patrick Fagan, author of the book Hooked: Why Cute Sells and Other Marketing Magic That We Just Can’t Resist. He is also the Chief Scientific Officer at Capuchin Behavioural Science. As you’ll hear on the show today, Patrick has done all sorts of interesting research over the years, including a study for eBay and some for social media. He has such a great knowledge of the mind and how it applies to marketing and behavior. You can definitely say we are cut from the same cloth so I truly enjoyed chatting with him and I know you’ll love this episode as well.  I hope you love everything recommended via The Brainy Business! Show Notes: [00:41] Today I am so excited to introduce you to Patrick Fagan, author of the book Hooked: Why Cute Sells and Other Marketing Magic That We Just Can’t Resist. [03:16] Patrick shares how he developed his love for behavioral science and got into the field.  [04:55] Now Patrick is the Chief Scientific Officer at Capuchin Behavioural Science. They do behavioral science consulting and research.  [07:07] Patrick shares about the priming study he did for eBay. He looked at the effects of background noises on online shopping.  [07:54] He found that classical music makes people more likely to buy. He shares his findings on different types of music.  [10:32] Patrick shares about the papers he co-authored on Facebook psychology and facial expressions. His studies showed that Facebook can raise or lower your self-esteem depending on how you’re using it.  [11:56] Technology is not completely a force for good. It is harming our attention spans and our abilities to think and be conscientious.  [13:39] Patrick shares more about their study on facial expressions. On average, they found that people tend to lean back if they are bored.  [14:42] He gets excited to work on projects where he can understand people, why people behave a certain way, and how behavior can be influenced. He loves doing segmentations.  [17:42] Generally speaking when working with millions of people you have to segment them into groups.  [19:33] Heretics are important for society; they are generally quite influential.  [20:03] Melina shares some of Wendy Wood’s work with habits on running.  [22:35] Fitness seekers are influenced by commitment and consistency. Doing in the future what you have done in the past.  [24:10] Patrick shares about a study in Poland about traditionalism. He had a hunch there was a third group and this was completely validated with the data. [26:01] He shares how you can send different messages based on the group of people. This approach helps you to be able to speak your customers’ language better.  [28:20] You can be marketing exactly the same product and if you're talking to one audience you would use different imagery than if you were trying to appeal to another group.  [28:56] He wrote the book Hooked because he thought it would be good for the world. He also thought he saw a gap in the market for how to use psychology for messaging.  [29:33] His book shares how to make messages work by grabbing attention, how to engage people, and how to nudge behavior.  [29:53] There are three steps that a message needs to take. First, it needs to grab attention.  [31:46] The second part is that a message needs to engage people emotionally.  [33:17] If you present people with puzzles, riddles, or anything where they have to think about it they will be more likely to engage with it or remember.  [34:16] The third thing is how to nudge behavior. You have to motivate people.  [35:04] Passion or emotion is the steam in the engine which drives behavior. If you want people to act you have to fire them up and get that energy going to drive them to act. [38:10] Grab your copy of Patrick’s book Hooked (and all the other books mentioned on the show today) in the links below.. [40:17] Melina’s closing reflections. Thanks for listening. Just Can't Get Enough by Depeche Mode https://youtu.be/_6FBfAQ-NDE - This is a topic that has been on my mind for a while. I recorded this about 6 months ago. It was one of the 1st episodes so don't expect much. While this topic has been covered from every angle by many people more qualified than myself, I might as well chime in. I have an addictive prone personality when it comes to certain things. At the time of this recording, it was video gaming. So far I have found many other ways to occupy my time outside of a gaming console's virtual escape. That's not to say I believe video games to be bad, but like all things, let moderation be your copilot. So pour your favorite bourbon in a glass and sip while we cover the big "A" in an Indecisive way. MZ Thank you for listening and make it a great day. Cheers. And as always doesn't let diabetes get in the way. If you have questions about Halloween, if you are newer diagnosed family or you just are confused, you want to try something new this year. So here is my interview with Kelly Kunic on the eve of her 40th diversity with type 1 diabetes. Kelly, thanks for joining me, you're one of the things I get a lot in parenting groups that I'm in is you know, what do I do about Halloween? And so we're gonna be talking about that this week. But I thought it would be really fun. And so just a good excuse to talk to you. To find out more about being diagnosed on Halloween. I shouldn't have said it'll be fun. It's always fun to talk to you, Kelly. But that's not fun at all. Thanks for coming on with me.   Kelly Kunik  3:11 Well, thank you for having and thank you for doing what you do. And I think Halloween is an excellent topic.   Stacey Simms  3:18 Yeah. Tell us your story. You were diagnosed. And I can't believe as we're talking here. You're kind of on 40 years for your diagnosis.   Kelly Kunik  3:25 Yes. Yes, I am. And that's crazy. And I can't believe it. And I just as shocked as you are. But yes, it will be 40 years with, you know, celebrating my type 1 diabetes diagnosis on Halloween. And it was interesting. And what I remember a lot of it, tell us, I just remember a lot of whispering that week with my parents and my siblings. You know, I have siblings who, who also have type one. And my dad had type one. And, you know, Halloween every year was a pretty big deal in our house. And it was up to my siblings to come up with my Halloween costume. or help me come up with it. Because there were so many of us. And I couldn't get them to commit. And I remember coming home from school one day, and my sister Debbie, who had diabetes and who had passed away from diabetes met me at the door. And she asked me if I was thirsty. And I was of course, and she gave me a tab. And I download it. And then she asked me if I wanted another one, which of course I did. And I download it. And then she asked me if I wanted another one.   Stacey Simms  4:44 And we're talking about tab the diet soda because just to be clear, right? I mean, right?   Kelly Kunik  4:49 That right tab the diet soda and I drank the third one and then of course I had to go to the bathroom. And she said well drinking I'm not going to let you go to the bathroom, unless you pee on this test tape, which was a way back in the late 70s to test what your sugar was. And I was smart enough to know that that wasn't a good thing. Because there was test tape in all of our bathrooms, because of my two sisters with type one and my father, and I looked at my sister and I told her I didn't have to go to the bathroom. Oh, geez. And I was a pretty stubborn little girl. And I refused to go to the bathroom for like an hour. And I was dying at that point. Like I literally was doubled over in pain, but I knew that something was up and that if I peed on that test tape, something was going to happen that I didn't want. And I finally you know, I did I like I said, I would do it. And it turned to color it shouldn't have. And there were lots of whispers. And I remember my parents being on the phone with CHOP children's hospitals, Pennsylvania that night. And it was the night before Halloween. And I don't really remember a lot. But I remember the next morning we got up very early. And we drove to Philadelphia to CHOP. And I remember waiting in the registration office to register because as a patient because we'd never been to chat before. And then the physical exam. And I remember them hooking me up with an insulin drip. And I was trying to make my parents laugh. So I called it the Alaskan pipeline. Like luck bomb. It's the laughter pipeline. Look at me, I have my own Alaskan pipeline. But I really wanted to go out trick or treating. I wanted to go out and costumes, you can talk of all these different costumes I could wear and I love Halloween. Not just because the candy. I love dressing up in costumes. That was kind of my thing. As a kid. I was always dressing up in costumes, like if I could have gone to school in a cape. But back in the 70s it wasn't really acceptable. I was constantly dressing up in costumes. And I tried to convince a nurse who was dressed like a clown, that the results were inconclusive. Again, I watched a lot of television   Stacey Simms  7:25 you're waiting to hear. You're eight years old. You're trying to tell that the medical professionals around Yeah, because maybe it's not, you know?   Kelly Kunik  7:32 Well, I I used to watch Quincy, on answer Carol Burnett. Yes. And so I was I was just like, repeat everything that Quincy would say, I'd like to think the tests are inconclusive. And he just let me go out trick or treating. I promise you, I won't eat any candy. And my parents will bring me back tomorrow. But I have all these costumes lined up. And she looked at me and she said, Oh, honey, the tests are inconclusive. You have diabetes. And no one had said that. I said, Oh, okay. I guess I have diabetes, like okay. And I didn't really think that's when I started not to like clown so much. Yeah, and I remember them telling me that I could go trick or treating in the hospital. They could provide me with a costume, which was subpar. There was no way I was walking around in this costume. They had no creativity behind them at all. And then I could only get dietetic candy. And I was like, nope, no, thank you not doing that. I know what that is because of my sisters. There's no way I know, your stomach. You know that? What does to your teeth? I'm not doing it. And so I stayed in and watch TV, you know, and kind of waited till my parents left to lose it a little bit because they didn't want them to get upset. I could tell that they were upset and I didn't want them to get any more upset.   Stacey Simms  8:55 Tell you so much to talk about that you've said already here. But it strikes me now you've said a couple of times that you're trying not to upset your parents. You know, I mean, you were eight years old at the time, your perspective is different. It's your dad has had type one. You had other people in your family, sisters, other people in your extended family. Why was it so important to do you remember, it's just amazing how we try to protect the people around us. They didn't mean protecting you did you're though, you know you were the little kid.   Kelly Kunik  9:21 I think I knew from a very early age. I was one of six children. It was not necessarily a common household. You know, the six kids there were two parents. There were various extended family grandmothers great uncle's living with us, which was wonderful. It was a great way to grow up, but I knew the diabetes. I didn't know exactly what it was. But I grew up with it, if that makes any sense. And I knew there was a stress level involved with it. Even though I didn't understand it. I knew that some of my siblings and my dad would take needles at the table. Before they ate, I knew that our bathrooms were sort of set up like a lab with test tubes, and things like that, because they didn't test blood sugar back, then they tested urine. And your insulin was very, very precious, and a bit expensive. And I just knew that I like to make people laugh when they were stressed. And I think when you're the youngest child diabetes or not, that's kind of the thing. Just sort of become the comic. Because everybody's watching what you do. You're the youngest, baby. Oh, isn't that cute? She's so funny. You know, and I knew I couldn't articulate it. And I couldn't explain it. But I knew that it was big for my parents, this diagnosis or whatever was going on, because I couldn't even articulate it like I am now. But I knew that I knew they were sad. And they were trying to act like they weren't. You know what I mean? And I knew that for a fact. So I was trying to make it easier for them. And look, kids are smart. They just are, and they see, and they handle things in certain ways. And, you know, when you see your dad who's, you know, trying to keep it together, you want to make it easy for him. Especially when it has to do with you.   Stacey Simms  11:24 It just, it's amazing to me that and you're right kids know, they are much smarter than I think we give them credit for and even Benny at two was trying to make me feel better. You know, it's as hard to see your parent be upset. And that's it. You know, a kid wants to fix that most of the time. So even he do and that's what it is. Yeah.   Unknown Speaker  11:42 So So what happens on a Halloween,   Kelly Kunik  11:44 I stayed in and watch TV. I mean, I, I wasn't going to go out trick or treating in the hospitals. I had to have diet like guy they called it dietetic candy when I was throwing up. It's what it was called. And it was disgusting. And it caused a lot of gastrointestinal distress. And they had something like a jolly rancher type of dietetic candy that would make your teeth stick together. For like, five minutes, while it melted in your mouth, you could not separate your jaw. And I'm not kidding. It's God's truth. And it just wasn't worth it to me. I had tried this stuff, because my sisters would get it in their Easter baskets, or, you know, family friends would bring it over for them. And it was disgusting. And you know, when you're little, you don't know the difference. And you're like, oh, Chocolate, right? And it really did cause a lot of problems. And I knew that. Like, I mean, you learned it very young. Yeah, I didn't even have diabetes learned it is not good stuff. So I was like, I'm not a I don't have my costume choices with me. I'm not wearing these drugstore. Like I have a closet full of homemade patterns that are very good. And I'm not chick retreating. And working so hard for this disgusting candy. Most of it   Stacey Simms  13:10 was it was Halloween. Was Halloween ruined for you or the following year? Don't you dig out one of those costumes if I wake up?   Kelly Kunik  13:19 Oh God, I went to I never missed a Halloween growing up. The rule was like every other kid, I will give that credit to my parents. I never missed the Halloween. I went out with my pillowcase. Because that helped more. And we trigger treated for hours. I would eat some candy while I was trick or treating because we were walking like three miles. And then I came home, went to the living room, dump the pillowcase on the floor. Did the division like all the kids do? Candy? Like they like candy. They don't like candy. They would consider trading money. Because people would throw in nickels and quarters, boxes of raisins, which immediately hit the trash. And my mom would say, yeah, it's I mean, it was like any other thing. My mom would say, okay, what's the candy you wouldn't keep? And she would keep it. And we would figure it out like when I could have it. And then in a week or two, somehow that Halloween candy would disappear. Sometimes my mother would hide it after a few weeks in the top of her closet, or on top of the china cabinet, which kind of dipped in so you couldn't see what was laying on top she would put it or those cabinets on top of the refrigerator that holds nothing and are really hard to get to. But after a few weeks, just slowly disappear. And she'd say your your siblings ate it. Daddy must have gotten into it. You know my mother was a Chocoholic. I mean, but we always had fun. I always went out with my friends. And I give my parents a lot of I remember going to like Halloween party. somewhere maybe in fourth grade, I don't remember. But there was a cake. I think my mom even brought it. I think my mom bought a cake was ghosts on it was a big deal. And the ghosts were made out of icing. That was toothpicks. And I remember like, I won't want to go, but they didn't see I couldn't. And that was really smart of them. They didn't make it a bad day. They made it a fun day. It was a fun day. Halloween fun. They kept it that way.   Stacey Simms  15:28 Just wonderful. And it's just so great to hear. Did you have a favorite costume over all those years?   Kelly Kunik  15:33 Except that oh my god, are you kidding me? I was a gypsy, which was actually my mother's mother's costume from a Gilbert and Sullivan. Oh, she was an orator in England. So I had this beautiful like corseted top, that all the girls were in my family. And we I was Gypsy and I had a scarf and a big skirt. I was tigerlily for like two years in a row three years in a row. Maybe because I was obsessed to Tiger Lily did not like Wendy Darling. I could not relate. I thought Wendy Darling was a whiner. He thought Tiger Lily was a badass. And she kind of looked like me a little bit long, dark braids. And I have long dark braids. But she's who I related to. And I was her for two, maybe three years. I was a jack in the box. One year I won an award for that. most creative con. So yeah, I mean, I love Halloween. I don't. I think it's a great I still think it's a great holiday. So I don't know. Yeah. And I don't like when people and I understand why they say it. I shouldn't say I don't like but I always tell people to mine their words, when it comes to diabetes. Like Don't let your kids know that you're dreading it. Because it really is a fun hot day. But it's great not to be you for a night. You know what I mean? diabetes or not? Like it's going to be a challenge. But today they give away much more prize related gifts today than they ever did when I was growing up. And look, we are black that we can count carbs today. Nothing is off limit. Well, let's   Stacey Simms  17:12 talk about that. Let's go on. Let's just you know, we'll get on the soapbox for a minute because Kelly people who know you sure you have opinions. opinions are welcome. I have a radio friend who says agreement is not required. So let's let's just talk about it. You can say whatever you want here. Because as a parent of a kid with type one. Halloween is is scary and is your oh my gosh, everything's got to change. It says how do I do this? And then I have actually found if I could talk about me for a minute. The hardest part for Halloween for us has always been my well meaning neighbors, because I have a daughter who's three years older than Benny. And since the time they were very little we did Halloween just like you guys did. We get all the candy we put most of it away even without diabetes, you're gonna throw half that candy away or give it to the truth is the dentist or whatever. So my neighbor's bless their hearts. You know, those first couple years, they would say here's a Hershey bar for Lea. And here's a sugar free hard candy for Benny, you know, like, Oh, right. And I'm not letting my two year old eat a hard candy anyway,   Unknown Speaker  18:13 but Right, right.   Stacey Simms  18:15 Yeah. And some of them did have little prizes. I mean, I have one neighbor who always has a little toy for him. Like, you know, Penny toys is so cute and so nice. And I never said to people, you know, at the door on Halloween. No, thank you. We're not taking that sugar free candy. But you know, maybe a couple weeks later, when you're seeing them at the grocery store elsewhere, you can kind of work it into the conversation. But I always tell parents just go and like you said, you're walking so much half the time that they go low when they're out there, right.   Kelly Kunik  18:44 Yeah, I mean, like when I said I walked three miles at night, my hometown was only a mile long. Again, like, not really big, but we walked so much and for so many hours that my parents encouraged me to have that Chocolate bar because they knew I really needed it and I wasn't you know, when I was little to treat a low we would eat an orange. My mom didn't even bother cutting and wrapping an orange in tin foil. She said no, she's going to have she's gonna have a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup and she's walking around because she's gonna need it. But like you I still get asked you know, can you eat this Is this okay? And I always tell people like there's not too much I can eat I don't eat liver. They won't eat liver. So   Stacey Simms  19:28 not even with not even Chopped liver. No,   Kelly Kunik  19:32 no, I don't like it and you know, I know that I probably should like it because I run a little bit on the anemic side. I have my whole life but I can't stand liver. But yeah, I'm like the only thing I can't eat is liver. You know everything else is Game on. Oh, and like you said like diabetes or not divide the candy up and somehow it disappears the next few weeks because nobody functioning pancreas or not eating all of that candy. Just Can't nobody can adult child a child with diabetes, don't diabetes, anybody, people, it's just too much sugar. But, you know, I'm sure you talk to your neighbors and tell them something similar because I don't know, it's really great to have people thinking and looking out for your kids. But sometimes what they're trying to do like, for me, personally, I think there's a lot of damage with the sugar alcohol, like gastrointestinal is not damaged. But   Unknown Speaker  20:31 that's what I always trusting. So   Stacey Simms  20:34 I want to try to tell other parents Look, the way I handle it is just, you know, you don't say don't do this, you say, please do that, you know, you say, oh, wasn't Halloween fun? Hey, you know, we're trying something new this year, or maybe a couple of weeks before, you know, my doctor says, even if your doctor never says, you know, my doctor says that it'll be really fun and easier for Benny, if he just gets all the regular candy. And then we figure it out at home. Because right, sugar alcohols aren't good for him, or, you know, it's just better to have the real stuff. And but thanks so much. So just nothing special. And we'll see it in a couple of weeks of Halloween. And that way, nobody feels bad. You're not saying you know, hey, you bought us that candy, and we never ate it. And it made him poop for three days, you know, we're never not doing that.   Kelly Kunik  21:13 You know what it's expensive to that's the thing like here, people are really looking out for you. And right, and your child and spending more money than they should for very little bit of candy. Because, you know, a sugar free Chocolate bar or whatever. And it's expensive. So   Stacey Simms  21:34 I'm thinking here, we're talking about trick or treating, which I put all the costumes and everything. But it's been 40 years, if you don't mind me asking you to reflect on that a little bit. Something has diabetes never change. I imagine some things have changed quite a bit. You know, your bathroom probably doesn't look like a laboratory with those test tubes. Are you doing any reflection with the shear?   Kelly Kunik  21:54 You know, I am. So much has been going on in our world lately. Like I was gonna, I really wanted to do it up right for my 40th. And so much has happened over the summer and in the fall around our world with the elements and things like that last night I yesterday, I was working all day at a fundraiser for Puerto Rico, that I haven't really gotten it together to have this huge celebration I wanted to have. And five years ago when it was my 35th I was smack dab in the middle of Hurricane Sandy. Oh, right. Where I was where I lived was hit very hard from Sandy. So again, everything sort of went to the wayside. So I think I'm gonna do something for the year, as far as reflecting, because it's not just going to be about the day, a year of reflection, and bringing it into the 41st. year. I mean, quite, quite honestly, when I was little, I didn't necessarily think a person could live 40 years with diabetes, you know what I mean? Like, but I don't think as a child, you don't think that far? Know what I mean? You're just very immediate in the now for the most part, because that's what childhood is. It's the now. Yeah, I mean, I look back and I, I can't believe it. You know, I can't believe it's been four years, I can't believe all the changes, I can't believe I started with this journey with people who aren't here anymore. And my family, that makes me sad. But I try and live and be positive for them. So that's good. I mean, I just want it to be a good year. And I want it to be a great life. And, you know, we take the good and the bad, right? vinegar with the sweet. So there are days I get annoyed with it. Don't get me wrong, but I really try and focus on the positive because if I, if I let it bring me down every day, then what kind of life is that? You know, any mean? Any it's not going anywhere? So I like to say some days I'm in charge other days, diabetes in charge, like, some days we're both kind of like co executives of Kelly Punic Tony beam. Yeah, you know, there are days where I'm the CEO, and there are days when diabetes is nipping its heels and trying at my, you know, like, No, I want to be in charge. But I try and work with it as much as I can. You know what I mean? Because I don't want to hate it. There are moments when I dislike it intensely. But I don't want to hate myself. I can open up any magazine, and that tells me I'm not tall enough. Not skinny enough. Not busty enough. That's really easy. You know if he hated my diabetes, and I would be hating me, and I don't need that. I'm awesome.   Stacey Simms  24:53 You are awesome. But I have to ask you before we wrap up here, tell me about your blog, because I'm good. I always mess it up. Diabetesaliciousness. So where does that come from? And I love it.   Kelly Kunik  25:06 Okay, first of all, I'm such a dork. It was supposed to be called diet. I was supposed to be called diabetes-licious. Now when I started blogging, which will be 10 years in November, Oh, great. Go figure that one out. I had no idea what blogging was. Okay? None. It just looked like a Word file. And I could do a Word file. I couldn't create a website. That makes any sense. Oh, yeah. And blogger was essentially a fancy word file, right? He could upload pictures too. And there was always this thing I'd say, Oh, so diabetes-alicious. Like if I went surfing, and I got out of the water, and my blood sugar was like 125. So I can go to low diabetes-alicious. Or if I went out to dinner, and I had a big dessert, or maybe it was dinner in an Italian restaurant, which is always a bit of a challenge for me, pasta wise. And I checked my blood sugar a couple hours later, and it was like 170 like, Oh, that's fabulous. I nailed it. So it was always kind of a goal. Diabetes-alicious is always a goal to achieve was always just hitting the norm in my life, doing my normal everyday things, but celebrating it, you know, again, if I eat a pasta dinner, and two hours later, I was 175. That's pretty. That's like Nirvana. You know what I mean? Oh, yeah, totally Nirvana. It was diabetes. Delicious. And so I started to fill out the blog information that I wanted to do. And at the end, right before I hit Enter, I put the n e s s so made it diabetesaliciousness. I changed it. Because let's make it more difficult to say and pronounced. Why not? Again, I had no idea what I was doing. The only blog I'd ever read was Perez Hilton. And I didn't even know it was blog. I thought it was a gossip website.   Stacey Simms  27:02 And it's hard to imagine, right? But in 2007 we weren't even on Facebook. I mean, you know, it was so different.   Kelly Kunik  27:11 It was so different and I had now I can't change it. And I even change it on the business cards I had printed up I actually put Diabetes-alicious people are like what so if Diabetes-alicious never like diabetes, delicious. ness. Or you could just say Diabetes-alicious. I mean, I know it's a bitch to spell. It's my own fault. But it was 2007. I didn't know what I was doing. the interwebs was a new and exciting place. I didn't know there was a diabetes online community. Seriously. I had no clue.   Stacey Simms  27:46 Why did you start that? What made you jump in?   Kelly Kunik  27:49 You know, I had last a long term relationship. And I'd love to career. And I believe it or not, I wanted to sell insulin pumps, right? Because I really felt like my I had been pumping since 2002. I come from a family of sales reps, and performers, to basically like there's no doctors or lawyers in my family. We're all like salesman, performers, for teachers. And I was always the example that doctors would use, like, you got to meet this patient. She's doing really well. My doctors would have me talk to teens. And parents would stop me when they would see my insulin pump at the drugstore and haven't talked to her children. And I thought I really felt like insulin pumping changed my life. And I thought, well, I want to sell these things. And I sent my resumes out and nobody would talk to me. Nobody. And I had a marketing background and a writing background. I worked for several local newspapers and magazines, and I was a writer. And someone had mentioned blogging, or personal journaling. And I thought, oh, okay, hmm. And then of course, there was the whole like, a celebrity said they wean themselves off insulin and I got really mad at that particular celebrity. And I started this blog and then didn't know what I was doing. And I ended up calling this celebrities publicist in the LA in New York often, and I think I frightened the gatekeepers so much at both offices that the publicist ended up calling me back. And we played phone tag, and I ended up speaking with the publicist and saying, look, I think so and so was misdiagnosed. And this Oscar award winning person can be misdiagnosed how many other people can be misdiagnosed, and I really do think that's the case. But I was also upset because I knew of several young women with diabetes Lamia, whose parents had mentioned And this particular celebrity, as someone to aspire to. She has type one diabetes and look how great she's doing. And when I tell you I used to have parents come out of the woodwork and still do to talk with about their children to me. I mentioned that to the to that publicist, I said, Look, I don't know if you're aware of this thing called by Alenia. And it's very dangerous. And it's detrimental health, mostly it's women, young girls, and women with Type One Diabetes. But, you know, I know that young boys and men are awesome. And anybody can have it, you know what I mean? And so there has to be a better way to articulate that. And I really think if she came out with a statement, and again, I'm not blaming this particular celebrity, I think that's on the onus of the publicist. And she just wouldn't budge. And it got me so angry. And I think that was my first blog post. And I didn't know what I was doing. I just used it as a writing exercise every day on a subject that I knew intimately. And nobody read it. Except my friends. And I can tell you, the first person to leave a comment was Bernard, Errol. And that was like two and a half months after I started blogging, and I didn't know that this community existed. And when I found it was pretty life changing. So I'm very lucky. You know, but I had no idea what I was doing. I certainly wouldn't have made such a crazy name.   Unknown Speaker  31:40 Right now.   Kelly Kunik  31:43 Like, I had no idea. I just knew it was this great outlet for me to get all my feelings out. And I didn't even realize how badly I needed that until I started doing it. Yeah, we should I learned so much.   Stacey Simms  31:59 Oh, of course. Yeah, let's circle back to Halloween. Because there's so much we can talk about in Kelly, I'll have to have you back on. But let's circle back to Halloween. Because, you know, we're talking about food and food issues, and everybody has food issues anyway. And then if you have diabetes, it's a more food issues on top of food issues. So if you're talking to people who want to trick or treat or parents of kids, and they're worried about this holiday, any any last advice here on just kind of keeping it fun. And making it as normal as it can be?   Kelly Kunik  32:30 for Halloween is a great holiday. It's really fun. It's an imaginative holiday roll with the imagination part of it. If you have more than one child, the rules apply for all you know what I mean? You can have a little candy while we're trickers reading, you can have a CHOPolate bar, whatever I know, a lot of you know, we have our check stations, right? Check our blood sugar's if you're on a deck, it's a little easier, right? On the Dexcom. So that makes it a little easier, and really enjoy the moment and don't dread it. And if you're going to dread it, don't dread it in front of your kid. Especially your kids with diabetes. Like Don't do that to them. Because they can't necessarily differentiate that you're dreading the diabetes aspect of it, and they're gonna internalize it and take it personally. Does that make sense? Oh, yeah. It's just like, it's like, children don't understand when you're upset at the number on the meter screen. They think you're upset at them. Okay, so what happens? You find ways to change the number. I did. And, you know, I went and check my blood sugar with one hand, the number would be lower. You know what I mean? Like their kids can't tell the difference. Whether they're 10 or five, they can't tell the difference. You're mad or you're upset. I should say you're upset at the number on the screen. They think you're upset at them. They are diabetes. I mean, I do. They're dying. Yeah. And I think it's, yeah, and it's, it's so important for parents to know, at least I think it is that you got to put your game face. You can say, I'm going to be up checking all night. This is crazy. Don't say it in front of your kid. Don't say it in front of your kids. Just do it. Just do it. Like, honestly, that's not fair. And I know, parents, they go through a lot with this disease. I saw what my parents went through and they didn't have the technology nor did they have this supportive community. I don't know how they survived. But you got to keep your game face on. You got to make it fun. You have to make it fun. And just do what you have to do and that your kids take part in it. Hey, look, could you do me a favor? Could you check your blood sugar? Like, let them participate? What's the carb on that? Do we know the carb? Here? It's on my phone, look up my list, like something like that. You know what I mean? where, you know, kids like to help? You know, they have to know this stuff, too.   Stacey Simms  35:16 Oh yeah, we're on. So what do you do for Halloween? Do you still get dressed up? Do you   Kelly Kunik  35:21 know? I did last year I wanted to Abby from NCIS was really fun. Great costume. I've done that a couple years ago, cuz it's just so much fun to wear. I don't know what I'm doing this year. And again, because I've been so focused on what's been going on in our world and healthcare and things like that. And hurricanes. I haven't had a chance to focus. You know, I'm hoping I can get together with friends, at least. And then we kick off into world diabetes day. And it's a really big whirlwind for me, I hope to do something fun this year. And I haven't been thinking about it. Because there's been so much leading up to this where I'm living like I said, it's the five year anniversary of Sandy's on the 26th I want to say, and they're still part of my town where like, people are trying to get back in their houses their homes. Yeah, so the past few years, it's been a little bit. My focus has been split. Which is good, because it's not all about me, even though it totally should be.   Stacey Simms  36:28 Well, well, let me make it about you. Because we're airing this show. As we're talking here, a little louder. This, but we're airing the show on your 14th die aversary. So from all of my listeners, to you, yeah, we're sending you a gift now we're congratulations. Thank you so much. Well, I'm gonna put this all over social media. And at least we can give you a big Halloween. Congratulations and way to go and everything else because it should not go unnoticed. I just think you're wonderful. Kelly, you do so much good for our community. Your is so much fun to talk to. I hope   Kelly Kunik  37:02 you have a great Halloween. I hope you did, too. And thank you so much. I will go have a glass of Prosecco for sure. And I will toast it your way. And I will tell you what in the DSC because honestly, I can say it's the best medicine and I am so grateful to be part of it. And you do such a phenomenal job. It's just so fun. And voc is amazing. And I really feel like sometimes when nobody else gets it, I just know that I can turn to my community. And you guys get it. And I don't even have to utter the D word. to just be like, Hey, guys, I need your vibes and I get it. So I appreciate it so much. And I love everyone and I love what you do. So keep up the great work. And hopefully we can all have a little celebration together soon. Thank you for doing this show though. I think it's gonna be wonderful and help a lot of people and as all your shows do, and Iraq.   Announcer  38:09 You're listening to Diabetes Connections with Stacey Simms.   Stacey Simms  38:15 If you haven't read Kelly's blog, now you have to right go head over to Diabetes connections.com. I will link up diabetes maliciousness in the show notes. And I'm just so happy to bring Kelly and her story to a new audience a couple of years later. So we'll see what the reaction is to these classic episodes. I'd like to start releasing them doing things like this regularly in the new year. So let me know. Have you heard all 330 plus episodes of Diabetes Connections? Or have you joined us more recently, and you're looking to catch up by you know, having something like this come right to you. Because that's what's nice about these classic episodes, you don't have to search for them, they will come right to wherever you listen, whatever podcast app, they'll come up as new. And I think that'll really give some new life to these episodes that I love and are so dear to me. And our newer listeners haven't had a chance to hear. So I'd love to hear from you. Let me know what you think. Our regular episode is coming up on Tuesday. We drop episodes generally once a week on Tuesday, with bonus episodes here and there. And I am talking to Leo brown from The Amazing Race. You may have spotted his Dexcom and the episode that aired that very first episode of The Amazing Race. There was a racer, he took a shirt off there was his Dexcom and the diabetes community lit up so I was able to get in touch with him. We had a great conversation, and that is coming up on Tuesday. Thank you to my editor John Bukenas from audio editing solutions. Thank you so much for listening. I'm Stacey Simms. I'll see you back here on Tuesday. Until then, be kind to yourself.   Unknown Speaker  39:56 Diabetes Connections is a production of Stacey Simms media. All rights reserved all Wrong avenged

The Kale Letter
How to avoid SINKING your LIFE.

The Kale Letter

Alright I need to put a cut off on this lol… You’ve got THIS WEEK to subscribe to “The Kale Letter” in order to get it 5x per week. After that I’m only sending it once hahaThis topic is for EVERYONE reading this, yes, everyone. It’s one of the biggest mistakes I see people make. And it causes some of the most unhappiness as well. It’s called the concept of SUNK COSTS. According to an article in Time Magazine, “The sunk cost effect is the general tendency for people to continue an endeavor, or continue consuming or pursuing an option, if they’ve invested time or money or some resource in it,”The classic example of this?? Yep, you guessed it. That girlfriend or boyfriend that you JUST CAN’T SEEM to get around to dumping… :)Whether you’re married now (like me) or not, we’ve all been there most likely, haha!YOU INVEST SO MUCH TIME, EFFORT, EMOTION, & MONEY into SOMETHING or SOMEONE that it is SO MUCH EASIER to just KEEP GOING rather than FACE THE PAIN of realizing that you WASTED THAT MUCH TIME AND RESOURCE!!I personally think, at least for me, that that sentence above says it all. It’s not that I don’t know the right thing to do.I KNOW I should abandon that marketing campaign, it’s not profitableI KNOW I should fire that employee, they aren’t working hard…I KNOW I should switch from comcast to Verizon, their service is terribleHowever, I spent WEEKS working on that marketing campaign! I spent DAYS on MEETINGS with that employee! And calling comcast customer support is worse than getting a tooth removed!LOL.We’ve all been there, am I right? Here’s the thing though, you’ve GOT to RIP THE BANDAID OFF. By far some of the biggest, most important, most PIVOTAL decisions in my life were when I realized that yes, that time has been wasted…But more importantly, it was CRIMINAL of me to WASTE ANY MORE TIME!!!That’s what you really have to focus on here. Not the past, where the time, money, emotions, and feelings can never be recovered. But on the FUTURE time that you will CONTINUE to waste if you don’t CHANGE!REAL QUICK: - one quick personal example so that you can get on with your day and start thinking about the areas in your life that need to be aggressively pruned to avoid this extremely common cause of unhappiness in your life. 23 Years of BASKETBALL completely ABANDONED. Many of you know this, but I played Division 1 Basketball. I played at Northwestern University in Chicago, Drake University in Iowa, and Duquesne University here in Pittsburgh. Here’s a picture of me at NU, share this letter with someone if you dig the shaggy hair ;-)When I was in fifth grade, I told my dad I wanted to “Play at Duke” and “Play in the NBA”. My dad, a collegiate basketball coach at the time sat me down and said…“Kale, if you want that, you need to work for it. You need to practice, every day.”So I did. From fifth grade up until I took my last shot in a college game at Duquesne in 2016.I worked out.EVERY DAY.literally.Obsession level = Dragged my dad to the gym at 11pm on a Saturday night to rebound.Endless summers traveling the World playing AAU basketball. Then the 24/7 obsession of elite D1 ball. Talk about SUNK COSTS!THOUSANDS of HOURS.Blood, sweat, and literal tears. And then, one day, the ball stopped bouncing. I had a choice to make.A) Pursue a professional career overseas (100% doable & probably the natural route to go in order to not waste my entire life’s work)B) Quit, get a day job, and stay in Pittsburgh. Here’s the point. I’m not special. But this is the point that you can take to the BANK. —->>> Ignoring YEARS of sunk costs and STAYING IN PITTSBURGH was THE SINGLE BEST DECISION I’ve EVER MADE IN MY LIFE. I started multiple businesses worth tens of millions of dollars.I met the love of my life and best friend and married her I became ridiculously involved with the best church on the planetThose 3 things above?Game changer. Game over. I would not be anywhere close to as wealthy, happy, or fulfilled if I didn’t have those 3 things. And the crazy part is, EVERYTHING INSIDE OF ME told me NOT TO DO IT. Your literal BODY will scream NO!Your stomach will hurt. You’ll get headaches. You’ll wake up with crazy dreams. It will HURT for a while. Sunk costs are no joke. They have memories, emotions, and PAIN associated with them. Ripping them off is like ripping off a giant bandaid from the biggest, most infected wound you could ever imagine. But oh, the peace and satisfaction when you’ve done it. I would encourage each of you reading this to do a couple practical things. Ask yourself A) What in my life am I holding on to simply because I put a lot of effort or time into it? B) What in my life am I holding on to simply because I put a lot of MONEY into it?Really think about this. These things might be so in-grained into your psychology that you don’t even notice it. They might be the MOST IMPORTANT THING ABOUT YOU (you think). That’s okay. Did I ever think I’d be an entrepreneur writing you this letter from my rooftop deck in Pittsburgh?HELL NO. I thought I would be playing basketball my whole life. Life is crazy, and today might be the day you really start to live it.Love ya. Kale Get on the email list at thekaleletter.substack.com

If customer success is about being proactive and helping customers achieve outcomes and challenging customers to do their jobs better, then Rohit Bhargava’s book, Non-obvious Megatrends: How to See What Others Miss and Predict the Future, is the greatest customer success book of all time. I don’t say that lightly. I say that because Rohit’s book lays out precisely how to help customers in a more proactive and valuable way than you might be used to. It goes way beyond the usual "help customers use our software better so they can do their job and achieve their goals” mentality.  It provides a method and a discipline for helping customers see around corners and identify trends and navigate the market?  Rohit’s book will help you be an actual trusted advisor. As much as we’d like to think we do, we [customer success] don’t really do that. In the real world, I think we still sell software and then help customers use it.Non-Obvious Megatrends will help you add a layer of value you can provide customers above the help you provide with your software. Rohit has written the Non-obvious report book every year for the last ten years. Several years ago I read the fourth edition thinking to myself, “What if I could apply this process identify trends in my customers’ industries? How much more could I help them?"  I had that idea because Rohit doesn’t just write about trends that he identified in his research. He spilled the beans on his trend curating process and shows you how you can do it.  Notice the phrase trending curating. Not trend spotting. Not seeing trends.  Curating trends.  Rohit defines a trend as a "curated observation of the accelerating present." “Ah, so this is how I can become a visionary," I thought. "I don’t really have to see the future." All I have to do is apply Rohit's process, exercise some discipline, and practice observance. Then I can curate trends, too. And if I can do this with my customers in mind, I can really think about my customers even when I don’t have to. That’s being proactive: Thinking about my customers when I don’t have to. Rohit and I talked about this.  I asked “How can I really be proactive with customers when I have to think about the customer who just called me and wants to have meeting tomorrow?” Rohit suggests I think about being a great concierge. A great concierge will be continuously out there looking for new and interesting things to do Think about it.  It’s not just about googling a restaurant when a guest asks for a recommendation. It is knowing, ahead of time, that there is a great Italian place with outdoor seating by the park that has a 3 month wait for reservations…but you can get them in tonight because you built a relationships with the restaurant owner.  That’s being proactive and makes you prepared to be a great concierge. That’s being proactive. So that when a guest asks for a recommendation of great Italian  restaurants with outdoor seating by the park, you have an answer.  It's how you can say to customers in your next meeting, “That reminds me of something you said the last time we talked. You said this, and just the other day, I learned that from another customer, and I think you might like the other thing…."Be proactive. Rohit says that most of us think that being proactive means being quickly reactive.  But being proactive is thinking about someone when you don’t have to.  How can we think about customers when we don’t have to?  Rohit explains, “When we prep for a meeting, we think about what they might ask and prepare for that. Instead, we should ask ourselves, 'What will it take, in the first 5 minutes of this meeting, for my customer to say to themselves, ‘Wow I’m glad I took this meeting?’’" That’s a different kind of of question.  It's a question that makes you think ahead.  It’s not: What are they going to ask me so I can prepare all the answers.  It isn’t: Go through the check list and update the all one hour before the meeting.  It is: “How do I make them grateful that they even took the time to chat with me, in the first place?”  It is also: “That was an awesome use of my time?"  More about Rohit: Of course you should get a copy of Rohit’s latest and final edition of the non-obvious trends book, “Non Obvious Megatrends."  Rohit also has a new ebook out…and it’s free. It’s called, The Non-Obvious Guide to Virtual Meetings & Remote Work (When you Just Can’t Be There In Person). Imagine that while you are sleeping, a cleaning crew gets into your brain to clean out all the toxins so that your brain works better the next day. I know it sounds weird but it is exactly what happens. Listen as I begin this episode with that explanation. http://ens-newswire.com/2013/10/18/brain-cleans-itself-of-toxins-during-sleep/Most great breakthrough ideas fail first and then get modified before they became a success. Often the reason you get upset or stressed out is because things aren’t the way you think they SHOULD be… Traffic should not be so heavy, your doctor should not keep you waiting – that type of thing. Listen as I explore how to change that thinking to relieve yourself of unnecessary frustration. http://www.bakadesuyo.com/2015/04/frustrated/When I think of compulsive behavior, I think of people who wash their hands a lot or check to see if they locked the door or turned off the coffee pot 50 times a day. While that seems to be extreme compulsive behavior, how is it any different than checking your smart phone 86 times a day? (That's the average). Science writer Sharon Begley has explored this in her book Just Can’t Stop: An Investigation of Compulsion (https://amzn.to/2IAUnHj). She joins me to reveal why compulsive behavior isn’t necessarily bad and explains at what point it does become a problem and what to do about it. This Week’s Sponsors-ADT.
