In which the Mister joins me in reviewing THE BISHOP'S WIFE (1947), from scriptwriters Robert Sherwood and Leonardo Bercovici (uncredited screenplay credit to Billy Wilder and Charles Brackett) from a novel by Robert Nathan and directed by Henry Koster. In this very strange holiday film, an angel (Cary Grant) is sent from Heaven to help a Bishop (David Niven) understand the true meaning of the holidays by stealing the affections of his wife (Loretta Young), child (Karolyn Grimes) and everyone he knows. This is currently streaming on Netflix but also available to buy/rent from Prime Video. This episode debuted six years ago, and I could think of no better show to honor my all-time favorite movie, Frank Capra's It's a Wonderful Life (1947) through the eyes of two women with close ties to its creation. If Mr. Capra didn't write it, why do I call it “Frank Capra's It's a Wonderful Life? It's because that's how the movie was marketed, which helps explain why the film got only a so-so reception when it was first released. Most of Mr. Capra's pre-World War II movies were so sweet-hearted that they later earned the moniker “Capracorn,” not meant as a compliment. It's a Wonderful Life is one of the most critically acclaimed films ever made. Nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Picture, recognized by the American Film Institute as one of the 100 best American films ever made, and placed number 11 on its initial 1998 greatest movie list, it also ranked number one on its list of the most inspirational American films of all time. Think about that. In light of the fact that hundreds of thousands of movies have been made, this is a jaw-dropping achievement. By the end of the Second World War, though, the mood of the movie-going public had shifted, as I wrote about the making of the movie in National Review a few years ago HERE. The next day after it was published, an appreciative email from a woman named Mary Owen arrived in my inbox. Turns out, Mary is the daughter of actress Donna Reed, who played Mary Bailey, the wife of James Stewart's George Bailey. I thanked her for the lovely email and we had a few back-and-forths. After my podcast was up on two feet and spreading around the world (110 countries and counting), I thought it would be fun to have her on the show to talk about her mother's role in this now-international favorite Christmas movie and to learn some back story to her mother's career and her commitment to writing back to the G.I's who wrote to her from the trenches and the gun turrets of World War II. The interview segues nicely into the next one, a rich conversation with actress Karolyn Grimes who played Zuzu, one of the four Bailey kids. Remember Zuzu's petals? This was a real treat for me who loves the movie so well, and I know it will be for you as well.

If there ever was a classic this is it! John interviews Karolyn Grimes, "Zuzu", from It's a Wonderful Life and "Debbie" from The Bishop's Wife in this Behind the Scenes fun interview! Karolyn has a great time talking about her personal memories of filming It's a Wonderful Life, how Jimmy Stewart spoke with her on the set and later found he at the age of 40, skating with Cary Grant between takes on The Bishop's Wife and how Frank Capra created a new type of snow for It's a Wonderful Life! Karolyn talks about how Henry Koster, the director of The Bishop's Wife incorporated a bust of his wife into the film, her talks with Maureen O'Hara while shooting Rio Grande with John Wayne, the tragic deaths of her parents that lead to the end of her career and her special connection to the legacy of It's a Wonderful Life! This a treasure trove of old Hollywood that I hope you will enjoy! Thanks Karolyn! Karolyn Grimes website - Zuzu.net Become a That's Classic! I learned, among other things, how much Mrs. Grimes suffered as a teen when her mother died and then the next year her father was killed and she became a ward of the state—then “rescued” by an aunt and uncle in Missouri, which was an unhappy home situation. Karolyn also played Debbie, the daughter of David Niven and Loretta Young in another Christmas favorite, The Bishop's Wife. For those of us who can't gobble up enough trivia and true stories about It's a Wonderful Life, Mrs. Grimes is a treasure trove of first-hand memories and insights! Yes, I was star-struck, okay? Six year old Karolyn Grimes was selected by director, Frank Capra for the role of Zuzu Bailey in the 1946 classic holiday movie, “It's a Wonderful Life”, where she worked closely with Jimmy Stewart who played her father, George Bailey. As a child actress in Hollywood in the 1940's and early 1950's, Karolyn had the opportunity to appear in many other movies with stars such as, Cary Grant, Loretta Young, John Wayne, Lon Chaney, Jr., and David Niven. Sadly, Karolyn's life changed dramatically following the death of both her parents within one year of each other. Orphaned at 15, Karolyn left Hollywood and was sent to live with relatives in Missouri. Though she was extremely unhappy in her new household, she eventually thrived with the loving support of her new, small town community. She went on to college and a successful career as a medical technologist. She also married and raised a family. At the age of forty, Karolyn was approached by someone wanting to interview her about her role as Zuzu Bailey. It wasn't until then that she sat down to watch “It's a Wonderful Life” for the very first time. Since then, she's been an ambassador for the movie and the positive, uplifting message it gives…this is her story. Photo(s): Courtesy of Karolyn Grimes Music: "With Loved Ones" Jay Man

Is that so wrong? Merry Christmas! If you would like to send us an of year donation please go to: paypal.me/patrickcoffin

This is a show to preview my Interview with Karolyn Grimes. She was Zu Zu in the iconic Christmas Classic "It's A Wonderful Life" from 1946. She played the youngest daughter of George Bailey. She delivered the famous line, "Every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings" She is now 80 years old and one of the last living members of the cast. She was 6 in the film. This interview is available to listen via download on all of the major podcast platforms.
We had an AMAZING interview with Karolyn Grimes. She was best known for playing George Bailey's youngest daughter (Zu Zu) in the iconic Christmas classic "It's A Wonderful Life" This film was directed by Frank Capra and starred Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed, and Lionel Barrymore. We heard amazing real-life stories about Jimmy Stewart, Lionel Barrymore, and other Hollywood legends. She talked about her memories of being on set. She even repeated her iconic line for us "Teacher says, every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings" She talked about some of the other films she appeared in. She told stories about spending time with Cary Grant. She was also in films with John Wayne and Bing Crosby. She gave us an inside look into the golden era of Hollywood. This was an absolutely incredible interview. Her career was cut short at the age of 15. She lost both of her parents in the span of a few years. She moved to Missouri to live with relatives. That ended her very promising film career. She was 6 years old when the film was released in 1946. She is one of the last remaining cast members of "It's A Wonderful Life." She still makes public appearances and has a website where you can buy signed memorabilia. Her website is zuzu.net "It's a Wonderful Life" influenced my life and IMO is the best Christmas film of all time. It was also ranked in the top 100 films of all time. Karolyn is such a kind woman. Enjoy this touching interview.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Voice Actor Rob Paulsen We're pleased to ring in our 50th episode with a man who has given voice to some of the most popular and timeless animated characters of our generation. Rob Paulsen was born in Detroit, MI, and at an early age, fell in love with the talents of comedians like Pat Paulsen, Foster Brooks, Red Skelton, Carol Burnett, Jonathan Winters, Peter Sellers, and the cast of Monty Python. His first role as an entertainer was as a singer, which trained his ear, eye, and voice to work together in a wide array of styles. Rob hit LA in the 1970's intending to be a live action actor but quickly fell under the spell of the Groundlings, the legendary Los Angeles' comedy/improv troupe, where he befriended and worked with Phil Hartman, Paul Reubens, Lynne Marie Stewart, John Paragon, Cassandra Peterson, and Laraine Newman. His skills honed, he landed his first voice gig on “GI Joe” which opened the door to Hanna-Barbera and veteran director Gordon Hunt, who cast Rob as one of Rob favorite characters from boyhood, Hadji, in a revival of the classic series “Jonny Quest.” That early success came right at the advent of the cable revolution and the millennial baby boom, and a sudden demand for family-oriented programming that would enchant young viewers as well as their parents. Disney, Warner Brothers, and Hanna-Barbera all started reviving old series and creating new ones, while networks like Nickelodeon and other syndication outlets began demanding more original daytime programming and Rob and his colleagues were part of it all. Rob is best known for bringing life to beloved characters like Yakko on “Animaniacs”, Raphael on “TMNT”, Pinky and Dr. Scratchansniff on “Pinky and the Brain”, Carl Wheezer on “The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius”, and many, many more throughout a career spanning five decades. After fighting a successful battle with throat cancer in 2016, a story detailed in his 2019 memoir “Voice Lessons”, Rob is back and busier than ever and still one of the hardest working, most in-demand, and beloved voice artists in the industry. In 2020 he reprised his role as Yakko in a reboot of “Animaniacs” on Hulu and has set new dates for his live show, “Animaniacs In Concert!”, performed with live music in symphony halls and theatres around the country. He is an outspoken advocate for people battling cancer and frequently makes time to bring joy and comfort to fans of all ages, all over the world. Rob joined us from his home in San Simeon, CA. IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Karolyn Grimes (Zuzu Bailey) Karolyn is a former child actor, author, retired medical technician, mother, grandmother, and for years the unofficial ambassador for the 1946 Frank Capra classic (and one of our favorites around the holidays) “It's a Wonderful Life”. With James Stewart playing her father George Bailey, Karolyn starred as Zuzu, uttering those timeless words, “Every time a bell rings an angel gets his wings.” Karolyn made 16 films between 1945 and 1952 and appeared alongside John Wayne, Cary Grant, Bing Crosby, Loretta Young, Fred MacMurray, Betty Grable, Danny Kaye and, of course, the immortal James Stewart. At age six, she had already appeared in four films when the part of Zuzu came along. It was just another small part, but one that has made an indelible imprint on the American consciousness. She joined us from her home in Weed, CA. Connect with Karolyn: Online: zuzu.net Facebook: @imzuzu Or meet her at the 2021 Tacoma Holiday Food & Gift Festival! COMING UP NEXT WEEK Join us Friday, September 24th, when we'll celebrate the reopening of Broadway with Dr. Broadway himself, our friend Dr. Jason Kindt of The Actors Fund.

COMING UP NEXT WEEK Join us next week, Friday, September 17th, when we'll be celebrating our one year anniversary as a show with a very special interview with actress Karolyn Grimes. At age 6, Karolyn played the role of Zuzu Bailey in the 1946 Frank Capra classic “It's a Wonderful Life”. Her childhood film career spanned 16 movies, but she is best remembered for her touching scenes with the brilliant James Stewart as her father.

Monday, November 16, 2020 - Online learning is everywhere. There's been steady growth throughout this century, but it exploded during the global pandemic. We visit with Minot's Barb Solberg, who co-wrote The Student Guide to the World Wide Web and WebCT back in 1999. ~~~ It's a great time to watch for shooting stars, as Chuck Lura explains in today's Natural North Dakota essay. ~~~ An event was scheduled in Bismarck called “It’s a Wonderful Life: An Evening with Zuzu” featuring Karolyn Grimes who portrayed Zuzu Bailey in the movie “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Due to the pandemic, however, that event is on hold, but we decided to go ahead with a scheduled visit with Karolyn, who had quite a career as a child actor until tragedy changed the trajectory of her life. She joins us from her home in California.
On today's show, I'll have Karolyn Grimes who played Zuzu on “It's A Wonderful Life!” After my conversation with Karolyn, I will be talking with Nurse Whitney Springer with Athens-Limestone Hospital to talk about a fundraiser that is underway through the Athens-Limestone Hospital Foundation to purchase a Caring Cradle, specifically created for loved ones to have more time to spend with baby in pregnancy & infant loss. After my conversation with Whitney, we will have a brand new episode of Kyla's Korner with Kyla Carter where she will add to our conversation about “It's A Wonderful Life!”

If Mr. Capra didn’t write it, why do I call it “Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life? It’s because that’s how the movie was marketed, which helps explain why the film got only a so-so reception when it was first released. Most of Mr. Capra’s pre-World War II movies were so sweet-hearted that they later earned the moniker “Capracorn,” not meant as a compliment. It’s a Wonderful Life is one of the most critically acclaimed films ever made. Turns out, Mary is the daughter of actress Donna Reed, who played Mary Bailey, the wife of James Stewart’s George Bailey. I thanked her for the lovely email and we had a few back-and-forths. After my podcast was up on two feet and spreading around the world (110 countries and counting), I thought it would be fun to have her on the show to talk about her mother’s role in this now-international favorite Christmas movie and to learn some back story to her mother’s career and her commitment to writing back to the G.I’s who wrote to her from the trenches and the gun turrets of World War II. The interview segues nicely into the next one, a rich conversation with actress Karolyn Grimes who played Zuzu, one of the four Bailey kids. Remember Zuzu’s petals? This was a real treat for me who loves the movie so well, and I know it will be for you as well. I learned, among other things, how much Mrs. Grimes suffered as a teen when her mother died and then the next year her father was killed and she became a ward of the state—then “rescued” by an aunt and uncle in Missouri, which was an unhappy home situation. Karolyn also played Debbie, the daughter of David Niven and Loretta Young in another Christmas favorite, The Bishop’s Wife. For those of us who can’t gobble up enough trivia and true stories about It’s a Wonderful Life, Mrs. Grimes is a treasure trove of first-hand memories and insights! This is episode is my first to feature two guests on the same topic, although Episode 34 included Jordan Peterson and Senator Don Plett at the same time in separate cities. This week’s show topic is the enduring cultural impact of Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life (1947) through the eyes of two women close to its creation. I say “Frank Capra’s” because that’s how the movie was marketed (it’s now called the vanity credit) and may help explain why the film got only a so-so reception when it was first released. Today's Guest: Jimmy Hawkins, actor, It's a Wonderful Life Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience of stutterers who claim they’re just practicing their Jimmy Stewart imitations … in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! It's a Wonderful Life: Pictured: James Stewart, Donna Reed (NBC Photo) I have to admit I was a little surprised when I read up on actor Jimmy Hawkins’ life since he played Donna Reed and Jimmy Stewart’s son, Tommy Bailey, in the holiday film classic, It’s A Wonderful Life. For example, did you know he later worked with Reed again as Shelley Fabares' boyfriend on eight seasons of TV’s “The Donna Reed Show”? JIMMY HAWKINS audio excerpt: "It's a Wonderful Life was a nice set. You felt comfortable there. Frank Capra improvised quite a bit of that movie." Or that he played sidekick to the King, Elvis Presley, in both Girl Happy and Spinout? He’s also written five books about It’s A Wonderful Life. One of my first guests on Mr. Media when it was a syndicated weekly newspaper column in 1996 was actress Karolyn Grimes, who played Hawkins’ sister, Zuzu, in It’s A Wonderful Life.
