On the twentieth episode of ATFT, I talk with director Craig Ienne Pedroza! Craig is a Jacksonville filmmaker who fell in love with cinema at a young age and his passion for film has only grown through the years. Musicals like The Court Jester, Singin' in the Rain, and The Sound of Music were some of the first musicals that have impacted him to this day. His favorite film is Damian Chazelle's La La Land. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Film & Production last year and has won both the Best Micro Short at Infinity Fest and Best Jax 180 at the Apologia Film Festival for his short film "The Candles are Wilting", which you can watch on YouTube by clicking here!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXecwF6x0xU.  This is Craig's third guest appearance on the wide release of ATFT! He was previously a guest on the episodes #FilmTwitter Trends: Directors edition and the 2024 Oscars Special. Overall, this is his fifth guest appearance on the show. This episode marks the first time I have interviewed a friend on ATFT! Craig and I became friends through our mutual friend, Taylor, who helped recruit him to join our team of making a short film. Craig was incredibly helpful and gave me advice I really needed at the time amidst the stressful environment. We share similar interests in film, especially in regards to Wong Kar- Wai. Two years later, we often talk or text about film and I love learning of his often fascinating, unique takes. When I started this podcast two years ago, it was always my intention to interview my friends but I grew somewhat hesitant since I expected I would know many of the answers to the questions asked. I ended up learning so much about Craig and I couldn't be happier with what became of this episode. This episode was recorded on May 10, 2024.  Craig's musical drama short, "We Dream of Eden", has been long anticipated. The film is about dreams and how a stranger can have a strong impact on another. The story is told through a young boy, Noah's (Aisha Christopher Williams jr), eyes and his fractured memories of the turbulent relationship between up- and- coming star July (Lina Smith) and her boyfriend Rowan (Jadon Le). Lina Smith has been a guest on two previously released episodes: Horror films and the 2024 Oscars Special! I was very fortunate to work on this film as a script supervisor but more so capturing behind the scenes footage. Craig's goal for the film is for the audience to leave the theater with a certain, individualized and impactful feeling. Craig led a positive and collaborative set filled with people who share a deep passion for film. "We Dream of Eden" will be submitted to a few film festivals so stay updated on when and where you can watch the short film by following @iennefilm on both Instagram and YouTube as well as his production company KAIBIGANfilm on Instagram.  Craig gives a very real, honest interview that spans from his early interest in film thanks to his grandparents and mother to reflecting on his previous work to his boldest project yet, "We Dream of Eden". His story and work ethic is sure to inspire aspiring filmmakers. In this episode, Craig and I also talk about the brilliance of 12 Angry Men, the challenges of filmmaking, and how he opened up and became more social thanks to three factors including film and his girlfriend Lina. Ten years ago at the Sundance Film Festival, every one who saw it was just dazzled by this low-budget music drama directed by then up-and-comer Damian Chazelle.  And as the year progressed, so did more buzz before it was eventually released worldwide later that year to much acclaim and lots of awards attention.  In fact, this film ended up being nominated for five Oscars including Best Picture and ended up winning three, including for Best Supporting Actor.  J.K. Simmons won that award for playing the highly memorable Fletcher, a jazz professor who takes one new student under his wing.....sort of. :) That student would be the highly motivated and gifted Andrew played by Miles Teller - he's a drummer with only ONE goal: to become the best!  And Fletcher wants him to become the best....but at what cost?  What results is one of the more unique stories of a prodigy and his mentor.....which goes to some dark places.  So let's find out who's rushing, who's dragging, and WHO'S playing out of tune....WARNING: There are some racial and homophobic epithets spoken within clips from the movie included in this podcast.Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Damian Chazelle reportedly helped a studio out of a bind when he agreed to direct First Man, and now the studio system is paying him back by letting him write and direct a film about the decline of the Golden Age of Hollywood that is over three hours long ... and barely contains a plot.   But what it does contain is some top shelf technical efforts, a cracking soundtrack, and some excellent performances. Hollywood screenwriter Jesse Nickson-Lopez has brought some of modern TV's most indelible characters to life. As a founding member of the writing team on Stranger Things, she developed the storyline for the character Eleven and has written for The Outsiders, Narcos: Mexico, and other hit shows. Her next project, Lucia, will be directed by Damian Chazelle, the Academy Award-winning director of La La Land and Whiplash. At age 35, she has a résumé most writers aspire to. Despite her success, she considers screenwriting her day job. By night, she is the co-ounder of Web3 startup MV3. At the intersection of storytelling and technology, MV3 promises to disrupt TV, film, and the Hollywood business model itself. In this episode of DeFi Decoded, Alex and Andrew chat with Jesse and MV3 co-founder Torey Kohara about how Web3 can reimagine storytelling and the business of entertainment.

If you have a car and a child, you will be painfully aware that even with the very best intentions it won't be long before the interior of your vehicle is a hoarder’s paradise. Assuming of course that the hoarder in question's idea of paradise includes odd socks, miscellaneous toys, hairbands, half eaten dried fruit and flakes of excrement. I've long worried/fantasised that some of this detritus, a stray water bottle or plastic horse toy say, will somehow become lodged under the brake pedal as I drive, forcing me off or into the nearest hazard, resulting in a gloriously high fall or the satisfying and punishing brutality of ploughing straight into a wall at great speed. Preferably after careening through a home for rescue dogs or an orphanage.  Anyway, it was almost certainly these completely normal thoughts which prompted Dan to pick Motor Vehicle Accidents for this week’s Top 5. Remember when we reviewed Damian Chazelle's sophomore feature LA LA LAND back in the days of Anonymous Meeg? Of course you don't. This time we thought we'd try the 36-year-old screenwriter, director and producers’ debut, WHIPLASH (Chazelle's that is, Meeg is both older and as of the time of writing has not written and directed a movie).  Jonathan Kimble Simmons (JK Rowling) delivers a career defining performance as Terence Fletcher, the psychotic music teacher at the fictional Schaffer Conservatory who pushes Miles Teller's Andrew to realise his true potential as a jazz drummer through whatever means necessary. An exhilarating and thought-provoking examination of what it means to be truly exceptional at something and whether it's worth the costs, Simmons and Chazelle have together crazy created one of cinema's truly iconic villains in this blistering and breath-taking award winner.  Loosely based on novels by British author Cressida Cowell, the HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON franchise is 12th in the list of highest grossing animated films, racking up a cool $1.6 billion worldwide over 3 cinema releases. The movies follow the adventures of Hiccup and Toothless as a Viking and a Dragon respectively, I won't ruin it by telling you who trains whom. Amazingly one of the dads had never seen this so we were eased in gently, like a child gradually sticking a big toe into a chilly pool or that time I eased myself gently into your mothers hoop with Netflix's HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON - LEGENDS, an animated series of short films continuing the plot of the first movie. GIFT OF THE NIGHT FURY is set during the festival of Snoggletog and sees the Dragons suddenly incredibly horny. We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. He's recorded extensively as a leader, and has also worked with players as different from each other as Matana Roberts and Grace Kelly. He's just released a new double live CD, Rhyme and Reason, with the help of Giant Step Arts, a nonprofit formed by photographer Jimmy Katz and his wife Dena that provides jazz artists with funding for albums - Giant Step pays for the recording and the manufacturing, and even the publicity, and all the artists have to do is figure out a way to sell the CDs. In this interview, we talk about a lot of different subjects, including some of Palmer's previous albums, some things he's got coming up, the whole Giant Step Arts thing, his work in Damian Chazelle's movie Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench, and more. It’s a very interesting conversation, and one I hope you’ll enjoy. Music heard in this episode: Jason Palmer, "Herbs in a Glass" (Rhyme and Reason) Jason Palmer, "Waltz for Diana" (Rhyme and Reason)

This is a mix tape. This won’t be for everybody. I love a number of musicals which have been released in the last 12 years or so. Netflix, as of late, has been releasing a few of my favorites which has had me reminiscing, singing the songs, out loud at home. Films such as Across the Universe, and especially Sweeney Todd.   This mix tape consists mostly of male performances. The ladies in the movies sing incredible numbers, but I don’t feel the guys get enough love. I feel the performance from the men is masculine and stoic. A far departure, I feel of how men are portrayed in so many of today’s films and tv shows as grown man children. Overly sensitive and without a clue.   The films covered in this mix tape but not in this order.   -Sweeney Todd (2007) with Johnny Depp, directed by Tim Burton. -Across the Universe (2006) with Jim Sturgess, directed by Julie Taymor. -La La Land (2016) with Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, directed by Damian Chazelle. -Dreamgirls (2007) with Jamie Foxx, directed by Bill Condon. -Les Miserables (2012) with Hugh Jackman, directed by Tom Hooper. -Get Him To The Greek (2010) with Russell Brand, directed by Nicholas Stoller -Sing Street (2016) directed by John Carney. -Walk the Line (2005) with Joaquin Phoenix, directed by James Mangold. Other musicals, honorable mentions, which are some of my favorites are but are not on this mixtape are: Ray (2004), Once (2007), Begin Again (2013), Rock Of Ages (2012).   Enjoy!   You can contact me by calling to texting 201-429-0274. Damian Chazelle’s new big-screen musical LA LA LAND takes its cues from various singing-and-dancing cinematic predecessors, but its melancholy tone is directly descended from Jacques Demy’s classic 1964 musical THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG — a Next Picture Show favorite that we dig into in this first half. We talk over the effects of the film’s sung-through style and working-class setting, and try to pinpoint that certain je ne said quoi that makes UMBRELLAS so indelible.
