Madolyn Smith Osborne had the kind of fairy tale show business beginning that most can only fantasize about. While still in school at The University of Southern California, she won her first paycheck with a serendipitous audition before famed choreographer, Gower Champion, when a lead dancer and understudy had to be replaced in the Broadway-bound production of Pal Joey starring Lena Horne.  Madolyn's passion for musical theater as well as her training with beloved choreographers Bill and Jacqui Landrum, prepared her well for the opportunity. A year later, on the eve of graduating from USC's School of Dramatic Arts., her mentor, the late, iconic theatre and film producer and Academy Award-winning actor, John Houseman, launched a swan song of sorts for her with a production of Shakespeare's All's Well That Ends Well, in which Madolyn starred in the role of Helena. Mr. Houseman had invited various industry professionals to see the show in the 99-seat Stop Gap Theater on campus, including his former protege, film director, Jim Bridges, who, upon seeing Madolyn's performance, invited her to play the role of John Travolta's mistress, Pam, in the cult classic, Urban Cowboy. Madolyn went on to give multiple award-winning performances in the L.A. theater scene. Among her triumphs, she created the title role of Emily in Stephen Metcalfe's play of the same name, which was directed by the renowned producer-director, Jack O'Brien, during its premiere at San Diego's revered Old Globe Theatre.  When Madolyn was studying with legendary actress, Kim Stanley, and opera singer, Gloria Lane, she became a founding member of L.A. Theatre Works.  Madolyn also enjoyed a terrific TV and film career in which she found herself starring in features opposite the likes of no less than Steve Martin in All of Me, Roy Scheider in 2010: The Year We Make Contact, Chevy Chase in Funny Farm, Joe Pesci in The Super, and in TV shows like Due South, Cheers, If Tomorrow Comes, and Sadat. But at the height of her powers, all of that was abruptly interrupted by a chronic illness that she fights to this day.Madolyn resides in Toronto, Canada with her husband, former NHL hockey great, Mark Osborne, and 2 adult daughters who live nearby.            For the record, Madolyn and I have known one another for more years than either of us will admit, having met and worked together on a few productions while we were both in drama school at the USC.

This week Izzy and Murtada welcome Isaac Butler, author of "The Method: How the Twentieth Century Learned to Act.” The trio discusses the scourge of biopics, how the standards of what is considered “good” or “bad” have changed over time, and how the Method redefined masculinity and what's considered “fuckable” on screen but still gets such a bad wrap. Some of the actors discussed (though not all are Method) include Marlon Brando, Kim Stanley, Joan Crawford, John Garfield, Sally Field, Daniel Day Lewis, Nicholas Cage, Joanne Woodward, Al Pacino, Jennifer Garner and Robert De Niro. Butler brings his vast knowledge of the history of acting and, needless to say, Izzy and Murtada wish the conversation could have gone on forever. Hopepunk.

¿Nos tragaremos la segunda temporada de The House of the Dragon? Sin pensarlo. Pero es asqueroso. Y por eso algunas autoras como Alexandra Rowland y una legión de lectoras se han empeñado en marcar un camino distinto para ese escenario inicial. ¿Todo va mal? Claro, ¿y qué vamos a hacer? Cory Doctorow, Becky Chambers o Kim Stanley Robinson.

A Hollywood screenwriting and movie-making icon, Ernest Lehman penned some of the most memorable scenes to ever grace the silver screen. Hailed by Vanity Fair as “perhaps the greatest screenwriter in history,” Lehman's work on films such as North by Northwest, The King and I, Sabrina, West Side Story, and The Sound of Music helped define a generation of movie making. But while his talent took center stage, the public knew little of Lehman himself, a native of Manhattan's Upper West Side and the Five Towns of Long Island devoted to his wife of 50 years. His relentless perfectionism, hypochondria and all-night writing sessions fueled by tequila and grilled cheese sandwiches were some of the quirks that made Lehman a legend in the Hollywood community. In Ernest Lehman: The Sweet Smell of Success (UP of Kentucky, 2022), author Jon Krampner lays bare the life of this lauded yet elusive character. Moving seamlessly from post-production meetings to sound stages and onto the locations of Lehman's greatest films, Krampner's extensive biography brings to life the genius and singularity of the revered screenwriter's personality and the contributions he made to the world of cinema. Jon Krampner is the author of The Man in the Shadows: Fred Coe and the Golden Age of Television, Female Brando: The Legend of Kim Stanley, and Creamy and Crunchy: An Informal History of Peanut Butter, the All-American Food. Austin Pendleton might be best known for “My Cousin Vinny,” or “What's Up Doc?” but the 82 year old actor, director, playwright, and teacher is a one-man theater institution. It almost seems like there isn't a great play that he hasn't performed or directed, somewhere, in his 60+ years in the business, and he's not slowing down in the slightest. In this epic, 90 minute episode, what Meryl Streep said of Pendleton will ring true—“there's no line between the man and his work.” He talks about his latest performance, in the celebrated new Tracy Letts play “The Minutes,” then takes us back half-a-century to the the first production of “Fiddler On The Roof,” and tells a few incredible stories of working with the great Jerome Robbins. I ask him how teaching feeds his acting work. He shares some important lessons he's learned from his teachers (like Uta Hagen, Bobby Lewis, and Elia Kazan), legendary actors (like Jo Van Fleet and Kim Stanley), and disasters (like when a horrifically bad review kept him away from substantial roles for 7 years). He leaves us with a vow he made in 1958, which he still lives by, that just might be the secret to his longevity in this emotional roller-coaster of a profession. Plus much more! Sit back and let this great sage of the stage take you on a journey through the life of an actor in a deep, enduring love affair with the work.  Follow Back To One on Instagram

There are some common fears that agents have when they scope out a speciality, and they center around having enough business and feeling like they’re limiting themselves. How can we overcome these fears? What should we be looking at when deciding on niche markets? How can we add value to the clients we serve in the downsizing market? In this episode, Kim Stanley explains what we need to do to specialize in the downsizing market, as well as how her downsizing specialist course can help us build our business. There are six subsets of downsizers and you should choose the sub-niche that fits best for you and for your market. -Kim Stanley Takeaways + Tactics The most difficult thing clients face when downsizing is letting go of their belongings. We need to be able to guide and advise them through the process of getting rid of things that aren’t worth anything, and that aren’t of any further use. When looking to specialize, we need to research the statistics on a national and local level to make an informed decision. The numbers and money point to the downsizing market, and it’s a market that’s on the increase.  There are different subsets and types of people who downsize - seniors, divorcees, empty nesters - and we should be focusing on the subset that is the best fit for us and our market.   Nationally, 10,000 people turn 65 every day and together they’ve got $2,5 trillion to invest in real estate. The people who fall into the downsizing market are the most financed niche in the United States. One of the toughest decisions agents have to make is choosing what to specialize in, and there is a lot of fear around making this choice. By looking at demographic and market statistics in our area we can put those uncertainties to bed and cater to the needs and wants of the sub-niche market that aligns with us and our local market.   Guest Bio Kim Stanley is the President of and Real Estate Coach for Downsizing My Home LLC in Austin, Texas, and a Broker/Realtor of the National Association of Realtors. Kim Stanley Insurance and Financial Services, Inc. In this episode, Kim Stanley discusses the broad range of insurance and investment programs provided by her business, Kim Stanley Insurance and Financial Services, Inc. Kim reveals how to find the right insurance and financial consultant. Sit down and ask what their experience level is with and if they are using it themselves. If the person can explain their financial plan, then you know they are following the same guidance they are suggesting. Everyone gets duped. For example, Kim signed papers with a gentleman to turn over all of her brokerage accounts. Later, Kim did a FINRA report search, and she learned how he had a lot of judgments against him and was currently in bankruptcy. Most people would not want a financial consultant who is in bankruptcy! The first products a young person should buy are life insurance and mortgage protection insurance. This is term insurance, as you pay down your mortgage, the death benefit decreases even if the cost of the mortgage stays the same going forward. It is in your best interest to shop it and use a true broker. This way, the survivor who inherits the asset will have options to choose from. Another insurance Kim recommends is disability insurance, in the event something happens, and you are unable to work, it will give you a pot of money until you can get back up on your feet. If you are never able to get back on your feet, it will get you through until social security kicks in. Then, Kim explains how to use your Roth IRA as an insurance policy. It can be a slush fund throughout your life. The government says you can put away a certain amount of money, and after five years of contributing if anything happens in your world, you can get into your Roth IRA penalty-free and without taxes. Your slush fund can be invested in the market or sit in a bank account. If you are invested in the market, you can use that money how you chose moving forward. After age 59.5, everything in there is 100% tax-free. Later, Kim advises on writing your will, setting up a trust, and taking care of pets after death. Enjoy the show! It was clear from the time Kim Stanley was young that God had gifted her with a talent for singing, but it wasn’t until her adult years that she truly realized her calling – that of leading people into the presence of God through worship. Since then, she and husband Joe have been sharing their music together all over the world through live concerts and church services, as well as several recorded albums. God has also blessed Kim with a heart to minister to women through her singing and speaking for many years, and recently opened the door for her to release a beautiful solo music project called Reawaken. In this podcast, Kim shares with Terah her inspirational testimony and the stories behind some of the songs on her latest album. To hear more from Kim Stanley, or to learn more about her women’s ministry, go to her official website.

In keeping with yesterday's quick squib about Limekiller, here's another short piece of review/commentary, this time about Kim Stanley Robinson's Aurora. With all of the conversation about Hugo Awards at the moment, I (Jonathan) am tempted to make some brief comments about books, stories and other works that I feel are nomination-worthy and that may make my own ballot next year. It is possible that I won't follow through on this, or that the latter half of the year will be such that I won't get to do more. It's also possible that these will get folded into the main podcast (I certainly don't intend to keep bombarding you with new content like this every day), but for the moment here's a sample of a possible 'Jonathan's Personal Thoughts on Possible Hugo Nominees' series. Please, if you have a moment, drop me a note in comments or on Twitter to let me know what you think of the idea for the series and if you'd like to see more.

During her month in the cast of the Off-Broadway comedy "Love, Loss and What I Wore", Shirley Knight discusses the appeal of the "stool and music stand" style of presentation while pointing out that she had the only continuing narrative among the many interwoven stories. She also explains why she considers her every appearance on stage to be a rehearsal, not a performance; her attraction to the groundbreaking play "Dutchman" by LeRoi Jones (now Amiri Baraka), which she did in Los Angeles and on film; how she shifted from a planned career in music to acting and her trek out west to the Pasadena Playhouse to pursue that new goal; the extraordinary experience of appearing as Irina in "The Three Sisters" in her Broadway debut, with Geraldine Page and Kim Stanley as her siblings under the direction of Lee Strasberg -- and why she chose that role over playing Ophelia to Richard Burton's "Hamlet"; her years working in England, notably in plays by her husband John Hopkins, which she continued to perform upon their return to the U.S.; her memorable role in Robert Patrick's "Kennedy's Children"; what it was like to have Tennessee Williams write a role expressly for her in "A Lovely Sunday for Creve Coeur"; her affinity for the plays of fellow Kansan William Inge and her role in creating the ongoing Inge Festival; and her affection for the work of Horton Foote, which marked her most recent Broadway appearance, in the Pulitzer-winning "The Young Man from Atlanta". Original air date - April 28, 2010.
