In honor of Lao New year, we have a special episode featuring Danae Hendrickson, Chief of Mission Advancement and Communications at Legacies of War.  Danae shares her journey as a Lao American and her work with Legacies of War to address the devastating impact of unexploded ordnance (UXO) in Laos caused by the U.S.'s Secret War in Laos and its secret bombing campaign.  Danae's family history as refugees from Laos deeply informs her advocacy for survivors and for greater U.S. responsibility in clearing UXO.  The episode highlights the ongoing humanitarian crisis caused by the secret bombing of Laos during the Vietnam War, the challenges posed by funding freezes, and the importance of remembering this history.  This conversation emphasizes the importance of community led advocacy, historical awareness, and finding hope amidst the legacies of war in Southeast Asia.   Key Takeaways: America's Secret War in Laos and its secret bombing campaign dropping over 2 million tons of bombs on Laos between 1964 and 1973. The U.S.'s moral obligation to clear unexploded ordinances left by its secret bombing campaign that's killing innocent children today. How U.S. Foreign Aid is provided and why America should be held accountable and take responsibility to right its past wrongs. Legacies of War's mission to support community led advocacy and engage elected officials to continue to support the clearing of UXOs. The detrimental impact of funding freezes, including USAID, to local communities who are continuing to be harmed by the U.S.'s war campaign. Historical commemorations and education to ensure that the legacies of war are not forgotten.   Connect with us: Connect with Danae Hendrickson on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/danae-hendrickson/. Welcome to Season 5, Episode 14! Our guest today is Chef Saeng Douangdara. He's a food content creator, social media star, and soon-to-be cookbook author. Saeng specializes in Lao cuisine. A first-generation Lao American, he left a job in counseling to pursue his passion for teaching Lao cuisine.  A trip back to Laos helped him reconnect with his roots and learn more about both the history and culture of Lao food, and that's when he decided to launch his personal chef business, Saeng's Kitchen and leverage social media to raise awareness about Lao cuisine. He may have started small, but he's amassed over 700K followers and millions of views on his different social media channels. We love how his work is educational, and it's resonating with others. He's been featured in numerous publications including Delish, Buzzfeed, the New York Times, and LA Times. He's even won an episode of the TBS cooking competition show, Rat In The Kitchen. Chef Saeng is outspoken in advocating, uplifting, and raising awareness of the depth and wonder of Lao cuisine.  In our conversation, we talk about what Lao cuisine is known for, launching Saeng's Kitchen, being Lao American, his upcoming book, and so much more. And yes, we do ask him to reflect on the Uncle Roger incident. To learn more about Saeng, or to be inspired by his recipe posts, blogs, and videos, we recommend visiting his website Saeng's Kitchen, his YouTube Channel, or his Instagram page. You can even take a food tour to Laos with Saeng in October!  If you like what we do, please share, follow, and like us in your podcast directory of choice or on Instagram @AAHistory101. Much of Rita's work stems from her professional experiences as a health practitioner and the ways in which she has studied transformative justice through other movements, like Black Lives Matter. Na, Varaxy Yi–to hear more about their experiences as POC/SEAA in academia, the meaning of homemaking, and the origin story and mission of their collective. After running into each other at various conferences and acknowledging that there were not many SEAA that occupy the academic space, they made it a goal to create a support system that provided the exchange of knowledge and authentic voices/experiences of the SEA diaspora. Oftentimes feeling alienated and isolated in academia, which is a predominantly White space, some members have taken more creative approaches (like dyeing their hair blue) in order to stand out and fight against invisibilization. When speaking about the challenges they had to overcome, they realized they wanted to do more than just survive. They wanted to thrive. Focusing on fostering a collaborative atmosphere, the SEAAster Scholars Collective was founded to help people feel whole and supported. Engaging with other scholars who are able to empathize with their cultural experiences and honor each other’s beliefs and values, they found empowerment. After sharing their favorite moments and takeaways from being a part of this group, they end the podcast by providing advice and resources to those interested in pursuing a career in academia. The SOUTHEAST ASIAN AMERICAN (SEAA) SEEASTER SCHOLARS COLLECTIVE is committed to advancing knowledge and understanding of the postsecondary experiences of SEAA students, staff, and faculty.
