Ontario Canada's government is all in on nuclear technology as it stakes out a global leadership position in small modular reactors (SMRs). In this episode of Grid Talk, host Marty Rosenberg talks with Todd Smith who is the Ontario Energy Minister.Rapid population and economic growth, coupled with the province's long reliance on nuclear technology, prompted its decision to pursue SMRs. “We felt very comfortable in moving forward with the technology we'd chosen which is a 300-megawatt boiling water reactor from GE Hitachi,” said Smith. “We're partnering with U.S. Technologies on this and other U.S. and international partners to develop the first-of-the-kind SMR, small modular reactor, here in Ontario.”“It's baseload power, it's there when you need it, it's there and able to be relied on 365 days a year.”The province expects to add five million residents over the next decade.“That's going to require a lot of electricity.” Todd Smith has been the Ontario Energy Minister since June of 2021. “Loyalist College, they have their own marketing people, they had just done a visual rebrand, so it was the perfect time for a sonic – not even a rebrand, they never had any kind of sonic strategy. So that was very exciting. And they had this new young marketing team too, and they were really receptive to new ideas, and they had this agency on board that had done their visual rebrand and their overall rebrand, and they were great to work with too. So it was a longer process and it was more involved, but it was all the right people on board, so it did go very smoothly even though it took a bit longer. Whereas that real estate agent, that was also a great experience, but it was just a completely different thing because I realized I'm not really branding a business, I'm branding a person." -- John Sanfilippo This week's guest has had a storied career, from music to media and advertising, and then to their synthesis in audio branding. He founded the sonic branding and production company now known as SoundWise in 2012, and he's worked with businesses big and small to bring their brand into the realm of sound. His name is John Sanfilippo and in this episode, we'll be unpacking his journey into audio branding and how the industry has transformed into the powerhouse it is today. One of the most intriguing aspects of our discussion was the creation process of a sonic identity, a signature sound so unique it resonates without visuals or words. We dove deep into the connection between voiceover and sonic branding communities, reminisced about early sound experiences that have left a lasting impression on us, and even ventured into the iconic album Thriller by Michael Jackson. All the while, John expertly guided us through the process of using a brand's media, touchpoints, and environments to craft a compelling and recognizable sonic identity.John also shed light on the nuances of audio branding for different-sized companies and the importance of understanding the emotional core of a client. We chatted about the creative push that comes with fresh ideas and the importance of integrating non-musical elements into audio logos. So, tune in, get comfortable, and let your ears guide you on this exploration of sonic branding. As always, if you have questions for my guest, you're welcome to reach out through the links in the show notes. I would so appreciate that. (0:00:01) - The Power of Sonic BrandingJohn shares his journey of how he got into audio branding and how it has evolved over the years. “The industry is very interesting right now,” he says, “because there are so many people doing it, but there isn't anybody necessarily flying the plane. You know, there isn't like one sort of authority figure saying this is how it is now, which I think is probably a good thing.” He explains the process of creating a sonic identity that is so distinct and consistent that it could work without visuals or words and shares his tips and insights on branding with sound today and about what the...

Joseph (Joe) Roberts also known as the "Skidrow CEO" is a Canadian motivational speaker, author, youth homelessness advocate and co-founder of The Push for Change Foundation. Roberts experienced drug addiction and chronic homelessness as a youth and entered drug treatment in 1991. Roberts worked in sales and web development before he became an inspirational keynote speaker. Roberts is the author of four books. Joe Roberts was born November 25, 1966 and was raised in Midland, Ontario. Roberts' father died in 1975 when Roberts was 8. Roberts struggled with low self-esteem. At the age of nine, he started using drugs and quickly moved on to alcohol, marijuana, LSD, cocaine, and eventually heroin. He left home at 15 due to family conflict and the inability to get along with his stepfather.[1] After being imprisoned at 16, he dropped out of Barrie North Collegiate at 18 and began regular intravenous drug use. At 19, Roberts relocated to British Columbia and found himself homeless on the streets of Vancouver's Eastside, pushing a shopping cart and collecting recyclables to support his drug dependency. Shortly before Christmas in 1989, Roberts contacted his mother (who was located in Midhurst, Ontario) and she helped him relocate back to Ontario. After a suicide attempt, prevented and intervened by Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Constable Scott MacLeod. Joe entered the Alcohol and Drug Intensive Treatment Program in Belleville, Ontario in 1991. Roberts then applied and was accepted into the Business and Marketing Program at Loyalist College. He graduated in 1995, and then returned the following year for the Business Sales program. He graduated on the Dean's list and won the Laurie H. Cameron Memorial Award for academic excellence [2] with a combined GPA of 3.94. Due to success in business, Roberts received the Ontario Premier's Award for College Graduates (Business)[3] and as a result an annual bursary was created in Roberts' name at Loyalist College: The Joe Roberts – Courage to Change Bursary.[4] This bursary is awarded to a mature student who has overcome life obstacles and returned to school.[4] --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tango-romeo/message

Born on the Ides of March 1966 in Wolfville Nova Scotia, Ross Parks attended High School in the Valley then Loyalist College in Belleville Ontario where he completed his Broadcasting Diploma in 1987. Ross spent 28 years in the broadcast/media field in various positions with Radio, TV, Billboard, Jingle Production, Publications and Transit advertising. His passion since his parents bought his first small diecast ‘Datsun' in 1969 was always automotive. Ross collected ‘diecast miniatures' all along, but it wasn't until he picked up a 1990 Brochure for the all-new Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo, that he thought "I want to purchase a real one next time." Next up Ross met an individual in Harrisburg Pennsylvania in 1993 that he worked with thru his Radio Station Jingle Venture, Todd Matthews, who was a real AMC collector. He had restored and kept 5 real cars! Five years later on his birthday (1998) and 8 years of saving, Ross bought his first Z from a car dealer in Vancouver. That black 1992 Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo! On September 14th, 2003 he decided to have a party at his home in Halifax for anyone that had a Z car. 22 cars showed up. In April 2004 Ross and two other members incorporated the Atlantic Z Car club Society, a nonprofit which is now comprised of over 600 owners in Atlantic Canada. One of those original house party individuals came to him in the fall of 2006 and said ‘I just got laid off, and we know of many folks in Atlantic Canada with jack stand cars(cars that are in the midst of restoration but likely will never make it to the end) we should start an import company". On January 1st, 2007 ZSportCanada was formed. As per the website, their main goal was to bring in rust-free cars that were complete, assist with shipping, organizing and negotiating with US sellers to make it a very pleasant experience for customers. Since then they have become Canada's largest importer of Datsun vehicles to Canada, with over 439 completed transactions. In the summer of 2020 Ross became sole owner of the Datsun North properties. Almost immediately Ross formed partnerships with a variety of individuals with different skill sets. A fabricator. A mechanic. A body man. A painter. A machinist. An engineer. With these folks, Ross and his team started a restoration of Datsun business across Canada as well. This business is now in full motion with work available for 20 years or more. In 2006 Parks connected with another Z enthusiast who was interested in partnering up on buying a set of buildings near Kentville NS. They purchased an old ‘chicken farm' in North Alton in March of 2012 to store their own vehicles, of which they had 50 between the two of them. However, they had 190 empty spaces, so they completely renovated and turned it into Canada's first ‘Car Farm' called ‘Datsun North'. Since then they have been sold out every year for winter storage space. Ross' plans for 2022 are to work on his own cars and get out of the importing and restoration business and continue to expand and improve the winter storage business. It's quite a journey in a niche market driving great business lessons. Entrepreneurs are the backbone of Canada's econohis. Multi-Talented Artist Vanessa Tignanelli sits down with Richard to discuss the many ongoing opportunities and projects she has in several different artistic mediums and her purpose and goals as an artist. Vanessa Tignanelli is a Canadian documentary photographer and videographer currently based in North Bay, Ontario, available for assignment. Combining her training in conceptual art, journalism and filmmaking, her work moves beyond the typical snapshot to the more significant environmental portrait, encouraging viewers to consider the notion of authenticity. She is interested in subjects that reconcile identities that we are taught cannot coincide by traditional society and stereotypes, working with themes confronting sexism, ageism and classicism. The work celebrates resiliency and individuality, looks for hope in hardship, takes us to people living on the fringes of society, and calls for us to be comfortable there. Vanessa's work has been recognized by the Royal Family, NPAC National Photographs of the Year Awards, Duke of Edinburgh Awards, and InFocus Photo Exhibit and Award. Guest:Savanna MehradFounder, Chomp SupplyFounder, FemmewaresAbout the Episode:Sometimes the Universe just plunks someone in your lap and you have no choice but to pay attention to who they are and what they are doing. This is what happened for me with Savanna Mehrad. Our paths were absolutely destined to cross. I have been following Savanna's journey for the past 6 months and it has been one wild ride. In that time, she has created a space (Femmewares) for female founders of small businesses to sell their products, she has held vendor calls, selected vendors, held a (highly successful) grand opening – and, most impressively, she showed her resilience by pivoting in the wake of COVID-19, just weeks after she opened her doors. I have been watching in awe! On today's episode of the podcast we discuss a lot; self-care, mental health, entrepreneurship, motherhood, women supporting women – the list goes on! We touched on so many important topics that I actually really struggled to name this episode. All I can say is if you have a little ping in your soul that you want to build or create something, listen to this episode and Savanna's story to feel supported, validated and ignited. About Savanna Mehrad:   Meet Savanna Mehrad, the passionate businesswoman behind femme wares. From a young age, Savanna has been a supporter of shopping local and supporting community artisans. Savanna grew up in beautiful Prince Edward County, a hub for artists in Southern Ontario. As a young girl, she would spend hours in the locally owned shops of her hometown, Bloomfield, browsing the wares, chatting for hours with the owners and even selling her own handmade friendship bracelets at the ripe age of 8. Did we mention entrepreneurship runs deep in her blood? Many have said that Savanna's superpower is connecting women and we couldn't agree more! Savanna's career highlights includes over a decade working in post-secondary education, building an online food blog, being published in a cookbook and empowering women to build their own businesses! Fiercely passionate about women in business, Savanna is also the founder of Chomp Supply Inc. A leading silicone teething & craft supply retailer in North America. Savanna helps women worldwide to realize their crafting business dreams, providing them with safe, high-quality products and a supportive and inclusive community via the Chomp Supply social media platforms and the Chomp Maker Community group on Facebook. Savanna holds a college diploma in Business Sales & Marketing from Loyalist College in Belleville, Ontario and a Bachelor of Arts from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. She is the proud mama of two little girls, the proud wife to an engineering nerd and a proud lover of coffee and chocolate. Key Takeaways:On motherhood: wanting to have an identity that is separate from your role as a mother is VERY NORMAL. Follow that pull. On exploring your spirituality: be ‘woo curious' – go out and experiment and see what works for you. You are an individual on this journey and there is no ‘right way'.On mental health: the more we talk openly and candidly about our mental health challenges, the safer this world will be for those who are in the depths of them.
