Jessica Rhaye joins East Coast DNA host Darcy Walsh for a chat about her career in music, her new album, her band, and upcoming tour. With the release of Sunshine Baby, Jessica Rhaye's second album with The Ramshackle Parade, the New Brunswick-based singer/songwriter expands her reach as a lyricist and vocalist with a set of alternately personal and observational songs that manage to be incredibly intimate and cinematic in scope simultaneously. While Rhaye illuminates the darker corners of her world on some tracks, the album's lead single and title track makes it clear she's ever lost sight of the possibility for redemption and hope. The result is a beautiful and powerful album – one that telegraphs the joy and depth of connection Jessica Rhaye and The Ramshackle Parade have found in working together in equal measure. 00:00 Introduction 00:50 Solo music career 06:10 Graphic Design 14:50 The Ramshackle Parade 16:30 Tour 19:00 The sound of Jessica Rhaye and The Ramshackle Parade 23:20 Influences 30:23 I Feel Fine by Jessica Rhaye and The Ramshackle Parade Find Jessica Rhaye and The Ramshackle Parade online: https://jessicarhaye.bandcamp.com/ (check out the vinyl!) https://www.jessicarhaye.com/ @JessicaRhayeMusic Find Jessica Rhaye Design online: https://www.jessicarhayedesign.com/ Catch Jessica Rhaye and The Ramshackle Parade live: https://www.jessicarhaye.com/shows Thursday, Sept 28, 2023 - Charlottetown, PEI - Trailside Music Hall Saturday, Sept 30, 2023 - Saint John, NB - Imperial Theatre Thursday, October 19, 2023 - Halifax, NS - The Carleton Friday, October 20, 2023 - Shelburne, NS - The Osprey Arts Centre Saturday, October 21, 2023 - Fredericton, NB - Charlotte Street Arts Centre Monday, October 23, 2023 - Montreal, QC - Casa Del Popolo Tuesday, October 24, 2023 - Toronto, ON - The Dakota Tavern Presents: Four Play Wednesday, October 25, 2023 - London, ON - Aeolian Hall Thursday, October 26, 2023 - Hamilton, ON - Mills Hardware Friday, October 27, 2023 - Ottawa, ON - The Redbird Live Saturday, October 28, 2023 - Smiths Falls, ON - Station Theatre Subscribe to @eastcoastdna for more music and arts coverage from Eastern Canada --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/east-coast-dna/message

Lanark County Interval House and Community Support (LCIH) was founded in 1978 after a Canada Works study found that women in Lanark County needed help to leave abusive partners. Members of the community banded together to build a space where survivors of abuse could find refuge. Since opening its doors in May of 1979, the organization has become a pillar of its community. Lanark County Interval House is the only service in all of Lanark County dedicated to ending Violence against Women and supporting women and children who are fleeing violence in their own homes. They serve Packenham, Almonte, Carleton Place, Lanark, Perth, Smiths Falls and all of the rural areas in between. They provide a 24-hour, 7 day-per-week crisis/help line and emergency shelter. We all have a responsibility to change the culture around gender-based violence and Executive Director, Erin Lee, shares how we as a community can do and be better to help those that identify as women who are experiencing domestic violence at home or in their relationships - and one of those ways is to "be an active bystander." In this episode, we discuss:

If you've been following along on my social media accounts over the years, you've seen a fair bit of this week's guest. She was my first friend in Kingston, Ontario when I moved away for my first full-time radio job. She became the kind of friend I had to visit quarterly, or vice-versa after only seven months in the Limestone City. Our path's crossed again when we both found ourselves single and trying to make it in the biggest broadcasting market in Canada: Toronto. With broken hearts and single-gal budgets, we became roommates (until she fell in love. I'm not mad about it!!) Morganne Campbell is a reporter and videographer, or as they call her at Global News, a digital broadcast journalist. Campbell was a videographer and assignment editor with CKWS TV in Kingston, Ont., before becoming a digital broadcast journalist in the Maritimes. She first joined Corus Entertainment in 2009 and became a familiar face in Kingston during her coverage of the Russell Williams and Shafia Family murder trials in 2011 and 2012, both of which were covered for Corus-owned television and radio stations across the country. Born and raised in Castleton, Ont., Morganne studied journalism at Loyalist College in Belleville, Ont., where she attended on a scholarship. Morganne has experience in print, radio and television working at stations across Ontario including CTV Barrie and CHEX News Peterborough and has instructed OPP officers in media courses at East Region Headquarters in Smiths Falls, Ont., in addition to volunteering and teaching young students about the industry. This episode is about delving into my self-limiting beliefs and finally finding the root of a really huge one…Being locked away. I always thought you could get locked up for your weirdness or negative thoughts... I unravel the story of that belief and mourn the consequences of the actions of society back in the 60s and 70s. My friend Michel was one such casualty. In this episode I discuss the Rideau Regional Centre, known to me as the Rideau regional Hospital School: located in Smiths Falls, Ontario, opened in 1951 as the Ontario Hospital School. Along with similar residential institutions throughout Ontario, this was the largest such facility. On approaching the semi-circular drive that curved up to the front entrance it was an imposing sight. RRHS was designed to house individuals who were deemed to have cognitive and physical disabilities. Individuals could be admitted by parents and guardians, training schools, or the Children's Aid Society. This institution left its mark on those who lived there and those of us who worked there as well. In researching for this episode I came across a number of articles that actually reinforced my silence and aversion to authority and authoritative decisions. I do not know where my friend Michel was sent once the facility closed.. nor do I know for sure he was there until the end. I simply know the injustice of him being dumped at a facility, stuck in my craw, and added to the litany of things that made me question all i knew in terms if authority, religion, and what was right in my heart, my mind, my soul) That first day of work in the Summer of 1970, I had to traverse the entire length of the main building the minute we arrived. That buildings' corridor was an eighth of a mile long! I was to check in at what was called Female Admission although, truth be told some of the residents, like young Lizzie,( I met her when i was a volunteer) had been there for years. (Lizzie was about 11- 13 at the time. Lizzie was unaware of her own strength and had a mercurial temper. When she was happy there was sunshine radiating from her smile) Remember I said the main corridor was an eighth of a mile long. Only 2 days before I started my summer job there, I had the cast on my leg,(hip to ankle), removed after eight long weeks. My leg had required a meniscectomy, and at the time, after surgery, the surgeon placed your leg in a cast to restrict movement. Two months had gone by with my knee unable to bend. This long trudge a few times a day was definitely trial by fire.. an eighth of a mile one way, 4 to 6 times a day. The photo below is only one small section of one of the corridors which were endless. Suicidal ideation like any other uncomfortable topic, was not something we ever spoke about like so much else in the sixties and early seventies. I am so enamoured of millennials and gen Z who are taking out all the hidden, taboo subjects and working through their feelings in the open, more and more. This is why this podcast exists.. to continue the much needed, often difficult conversations. Thank you for tuning in... Make the most of your today, every day!

How has your exposure to Scouts from other countries influenced your worldview? Podcast Topics The Baden-Powell Faceook page isn't being updated anymore, but back when it was still actively being posted to, the team behind it posed an interesting question: “Scouting is a brotherhood – a scheme which, in practice, disregards differences of class, creed, country and colour, through the undefinable spirit that pervades it: the spirit of God's gentleman.” - #BadenPowell How has your exposure to Scouts from other countries influenced your worldview? Ken and Colin attempt to give an answer! Shout-Outs A first shout-out this week goes to TheStrider, a Scouter with the 2nd Smiths Falls group, who has a sweet thing going with his local Subway establishment, and who has been working to get his group moved onto a shared Microsoft Office 365 non-profit tenancy. Additionally, Dan Tapley's council, Battlefields Council, has partnered with Canadian Blood Services via their Partners for Life program. Can Scouts donate 50 units of blood in 2022? And Ken's wife Grace (and her sister Mary) get a shout-out as well, for proposing (?) a leech therapy badge. #NursingHumour And, as always, a big thank you to the folks at Scouting Radio for rebroadcasting Scouting Stuff episodes to their worldwide Scouting audience. Welcome back for Episode 2. I made an edit to my country music wishlist: I add John Carter Cash to the lineup for the Legacy(?) concert. Then we go on from there:-An update on the Adams Brothers (Record and book in the making)-Venturing into "I Lived to Tell It All" (New Material, Stripped Copies, and Lost CMA Awards)-A note on "Ralph Carlson & Country Mile - Live at the George Jones Show" (Listen to my attempted recording of the hard-if-not-impossible-to-find cassette from the George Jones show hosted at Smiths Falls Memorial Convention Center in Smiths Falls, ON circa 1996).I've been listening to Alan Jackson's song "Back." I'm in agreement; let's bring country back. Get country back on track. I recently read a piece from Outsider.com by Clayton Edwards about the premier of "The George Jones Show." Clayton references his favorite (and one of the few accessible) episodes and paraphrases Bobby Bare: "The radio plays country music for folks who don't like country music." Ain't that something. Here's the link to Clayton's article: https://outsider.com/news/country-music/on-this-day-george-jones-show-premieres-1998/

The Bill Kelly Show Podcast: There will be no two-dose or even one-dose summer for close to five million Canadians — children under the age of 12 who do not yet qualify for a COVID-19 vaccine. Advocates, who have long complained that children have been afterthoughts during the pandemic, say it is crucial they not be forgotten now, especially with so many unable to be vaccinated and the highly contagious Delta variant on the rise. Health Canada approved the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for children and youth 12 and over early in June. But approval for younger children is unlikely to come until at least mid to late fall. Do we really have faith in God? The people of the hometown of Jesus did not. In fact they were "offended" by Him. So they relegated Jesus to being just an ordinary man. The Church is here to proclaim the power of Jesus! He is good! Jesus is Lord! And the world needs to see and hear this good news. Our prayer is that you will be blessed as you listen to this service of worship to our Lord Jesus Christ from First Baptist Church in Smiths Falls, Ontario.

He was huge. Arrogant. Obnoxious. Powerful. A warrior. In front of him was a wee boy. A child. A shepherd. One came armed with human weapons. the other came armed with faith and the power of God. No one would have thought the boy had a chance. Except God. God gave the power to David to overcome fear by faith. Many decades later 12 disciples were in a boat with a sleeping Jesus when a huge storm arose. The wind and waves scared even the most experienced sailor. And Jesus hushed the tempest with a word. and the fear of the disciples was replaced by faith as they stood in the power of God. That power is available for you today too. Are you living in fear? Paralyzed? Overwhelmed? Fear never stands up to the power of God. Your faith will grow today in the power of Jesus - even against fear. Our prayer is that you will be blessed as you listen to this service of worship to our Lord Jesus Christ from First Baptist Church in Smiths Falls, Ontario.

Holy Spirit, fall fresh upon me! Of the Godhead, perhaps the Holy Spirit is the least understood. Today we take a brief look at the Holy Spirit of God as we turn to the promise of Jesus, and how that promised Holy Spirit was fulfilled. Often we quickly judge if we see someone as a hero or a villain. Jesus was initially seen as a villain by the religious community, but people like Saul the Pharisee learned that Jesus was a hero. In fact the hero of heroes. In the meantime, Saul was certain he was a hero - even going as far as arresting and murdering Christians, until he met Jesus. Then Saul learned he was actually a villain. But then, through the saving grace of Jesus, the villain became a true Christian hero as he started churches and helped create many great church leaders. Are you a hero? Rely on Jesus, the true hero.
The Prodigal Son. The whole world knows the parable that Jesus told as recorded in Luke 15. But the correct title should be the "Prodigal Sons," as there were two sons, and each rebelled, and each had the same attitude. Or better yet call the parable the "Lost Sons," as both were lost in their emotions and their own desires. Or perhaps the parable should be called the "Gracious Father Parable," as the Father, who represents God, was loving, kind, gracious and ran to both his boys to bring them home past their own thoughts and actions. Are you a victim to your own "Far Country?" Do you insist on things being done YOUR way? The Father is waiting with healing and love to bring you home too. Our prayer is that you will be blessed as you listen to this service of worship to our Lord Jesus Christ from First Baptist Church in Smiths Falls, Ontario.
Imitations abound. Fake, Frauds and Phoneys are everywhere. And they all want your attention. they all want you to look away form from the truth. They look good. They look real. But they are deadly, and they lead to death. Here is the truth: Jesus is the Real Thing. Jesus, and nothing else. Don't rely on anyone or any other belief. Only Jesus leads to life.

There was a colt tied there. In the village of Bethphage. Waiting. And then along came two men who untied it. Strangers. And took it. Their only response as to why: "The Lord Needs it." And the owners let them take away their animal. Would you? Why would you? Why was the colt there in the first place? For what did "The Lord" "need it"? It is Palm Sunday and we look at the colt, it's owner and the reason that colt was so important. A Centurion has an ill slave. And this Greek Warrior turns to the Messiah for healing. His faith was so great that he knew Jesus could heal his servant remotely. I want a Centurion's type of faith. Luke 6 ends with rapid-fire parables and lessons. Blind leading the blind. Specks and logs in eyes. Good fruit and good trees. Mouths and hearts. Houses on firm foundations. The thread is to know yourself in Jesus Christ, Let Him make you the best possible YOU. And get rid of the junk that is holding you back. You really don't need it. It's just rubbish. Trash. AND make certain you pick and follow the right leader in your life. Only Jesus the right foundation for your life. He will lead you to true life. Justin Clark, a man who never learned to take no for an answer, died Thursday at the age of 58. Born in 1962 with cerebral palsy, unable to walk or talk, he leaves a legacy few Canadians will ever match. Clark became a pioneer in the fight for the rights of disabled people--determined that they should be treated as full-fledged human beings. Justin Clark, who died Thursday at the age of 58, is pictured with his friend and former teacher Robbie Giles as they attend Canada Day celebrations in Ottawa. Their friendship was fast and lasted (see below) a lifetime. (Submitted by Robbie Giles) After spending his youth at the now-closed Rideau Regional Centre in Smiths Falls, Ontario, he decided that he wanted to control his life. He sued his parents for the right to leave the institution they had placed him in as a child. "The 6 day trial began in November 1982 in Perth, Ontario," writes Anoop Kalsi in her review of the proceeding, published in Dec. 2018. "Justin testified by pointing to a board filled with symbols, a bliss board, which read his answers aloud. This was the first time a bliss board was used in a Canadian court," writes Kalsi, a paralegal at Baker Law in Toronto, whose senior partner David Baker had represented Clark. "When Justin finished his testimony, his parents stood up from their seats and applauded," writes Kalsi, adding: "You can read Justin’s testimony in the unpublished manuscript written by Audrey Cole and Melanie Panitch in PDF here and in text here." Clark is pictured with John Matheson, the judge who presided over his case. "He was not a 'mentally retarded man,' who could not learn, the court found. He was a 'gentle, trusting, believing spirit' and 'very much a thinking human being,' the judge ruled, giving him control of his own affairs." From Kelly Egan's obituary and tribute to Clark published Friday in the Ottawa Citizen. (See link below.) (Submitted by Carole MacLauchlan) The ramifiations of the stand Clark took and the decision Judge John Matheson made nearly 40 years have had a profound effect on--and for--Canadians. Following the ruling, guardianship laws were re-examined, and in some provinces, rewritten. Disabled people are no longer "put away." And more and more, a disabled person--not his guardian--gets to make the important decisions that affect his or her life--though that fight continues. And anyone who ever met him or had their life changed because of him is not about to forget Justin Clark and his victory in that courtroom back in 1982. Here's something from the website of British Columbia's Community Ventures Society. "The example Clark set is one that we should all be thankful for," says the post. "He took a bold step to change the course of his life and the lives of many others. He has clearly experienced the benefits of this and we're sure many others have as well." For most of his adult life, Clark lived at Foyers Partage in suburban Ottawa but took the time to play bocce at a rehab centre once or twice a week. (David Gutnick/CBC) In November 2018, Clark was the subject of a radio feature by Montreal-based CBC journalist David Gutnick. "Today, at 56, Clark is thriving. He has travelled widely — to Germany, Switzerland, France and to visit a brother in the United States. He sees his siblings and friends regularly, and corresponds with them by email," Gutnick reported. "He loves his job at ComputerWise, where he designs greeting cards and calendars. Once or twice a week, he plays bocce at the gymnasium of an Ottawa rehab centre." Clark leaves an extraordinary legacy. Robbie Giles, Justin Clark's former teacher, visits him at his home at Foyer Partage in Ottawa. “I just fell in love with the wonderful soul that he was,” Giles told told the Ottawa Citizen's Kelly Egan. (David Gutnick/CBC) In an obituary and tribute to Clark published Friday in the Ottawa Citizen, Kelly Egan quotes Clark's dear friend Robbie Gil...

In Luke 5 Jesus uses Peter's fishing boat as a platform to preach to the people. Then He sent the tired fishermen back out to lower their nets. They were unwilling at first but then said, "Because you say so, I will..." That is the response that lead Peter on the greatest adventure of his life - a wonderful, full life, and then eternal life. Will you also say "Yes!" to Jesus, and then you too can fish for others. Our prayer is that you will be blessed as you listen to this service of worship to our Lord Jesus Christ from First Baptist Church in Smiths Falls, Ontario
Early in His ministry Jesus went to the synagogue in Capernaum to preach. The people were amazed at His words. Then a man possessed by a demon entered the synagogue. He immediately identified Jesus as the Lord, the Messiah of God, "The Holy One of God.". Then, the demon possessed man came under the authority of Jesus as he was healed. It was seen as a "new teaching." Today, will you too come under the authority of Jesus? Will you be cleansed and allow yourself to come under His control? It will change your life. And you will love it. Our prayer is that you will be blessed as you listen to this service of worship to our Lord Jesus Christ from First Baptist Church in Smiths Falls, Ontario.
"I." It's a big word for only one letter. I. It goes with "me" and "myself." When my eyes are cast upon the one in the mirror, I loose sight of God and His love for this world. But when my eyes are cast on Jesus, and His overwhelming, ridiculous love, amazing things happen in my life and in the lives I am allowed to touch. I must learn to live in love. I must learn to grow in love. I must therefore learn the essence of love. Because the greatest is love. Our prayer is that you will be blessed as you listen to this service of worship to our Lord Jesus Christ from First Baptist Church in Smiths Falls, Ontario.
Jesus came back home in Luke 4. But His homecoming was not pretty. At first they loved Him. Then they tried to murder Him. Why? Because He was the Messiah. Because He came to fulfill prophesy. He came to bring Good News. Will you reject Him too? Our prayer is that you will be blessed as you listen to this service of worship to our Lord Jesus Christ from First Baptist Church in Smiths Falls, Ontario.

The Second Sunday of Advent is the Sunday of peace. Peace is not a absence of strife, problems or woes. Pain is a part of everyday life. Peace is having the calm assurance in the midst of the storms of life. Peace is knowing your life is protected by the King of Kings, and therefore, no matter what happens in this world, you are held in His hand. Jesus is the Prince of Peace.

JIM LEVATTE,COUNTRY MUSIC SENSATION. Jim Levatte is a Canadian producer, and engineer. He plays all the instruments ,and handles all the vocals on his original songs. They are recorded at his studio in Westport, Ontario Canada. Born and raised in small town Ontario Canada, Jim had taken to music at an early age. While all his friends played hockey, Jim decided music was his passion, and a guitar replaced his hockey stick. Smiths Falls was a railroad, and manufacturing town , so one had only to step outside, absorb their surroundings , and songs would literally write themselves. Jim wrote his first song at 9 years of age, and has since released 6 studio albums. His band was a staple on the local club scene for years, and due to a car accident in 2013, which forced Jim to walk away from his home construction business, his band has recently reformed. " I truly believed my touring days were behind me". With a half dozen shows under their belt, the band has regained its old form. Jim now spends most of his time in his studio, sifting through old tape. " I have over 50 hours of demo tape , with literally thousands of song ideas on them"'. The first single "This Aint My Day", has already garnered a buzz, and is getting a lot of industry attention, debuting at #68 on the New Music Weekly country charts. Stay tuned.. www.jimlevatte.com

Cannabis legislation is being debated on Parliament Hill. One MP called me a renowned lawyer and one MP said marijuana was as dangerous as fentanyl. At lest one of those MP is batshit crazy. Yes, Peter Kent claimed that by legalizing marijuana we might as well as be force feeding our kids fentanyl - well that was the gist of it. So we make some fun of him.We also update the tragic Ezekiel Stephan case. The Alberta Court of Appeal upheld Ezekiel's parents conviction for their role in his death. We looked at the case way back on episode 41 and we will likely do it all again because this thing is headed to the Supreme Court. I also tell Emilie a long story about the worse courthouse in Ontario - welcome to Smiths Falls. And then we talk about mental health in the justice system. The House of Commons Justice Committee is looking at the mental health of jurors. Ontario took action last year. But we need to do more for everyone in our courts. We don't talk about mental health enough but maybe that is changing.
