With a start in the Baltimore school system, most notably the historic Western Senior High School, Jada M. McCray, LCSW-C, began a lifelong dedication to education and growth. After receiving a Bachelor's Degree from Coppin State University, Jada moved on to the University of Maryland School of Social Work, where she received a Master's Degree of Social Work with Honors. After graduation, Jada launched her career as a Social Worker in the Child Protective Services Unit at The Baltimore County Department of Social Services. This eventually led to an active leadership role, introducing and implementing innovative programs such as Family Team Decision Making Meetings, which continue to help at risk families, social workers, and other community stakeholders find common ground. It was in this capacity that Jada discovered a passion for helping people to find mutual understanding and amiability within relationships. She further developed her clinical skills to begin training as a psychotherapist. Jada continued advancing her career and became a Licensed Certified Social Worker Clinical, a Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners Approved Supervisor, and a Certified Trauma Trained Therapist. With a continually growing love for mental health, Jada fully immersed herself into providing individual and family therapy, continuing her work and eventually becoming Director of Program Development at an area community mental health clinic, helping to grow the company from a small organization with 15 therapists to a major mental health provider with nearly 100 employees and 3 locations. Though having already succeeded greatly, Jada felt the call to forge new paths in the mental health field. In recent years, ada has become an entrepreneur. Presently, Jada M. McCray, LCSW-C, is the Co Owner and COO of Cornerstone Health Management, the founder and CEO of The Inspire Institute for Professional Development and Continuing Education, Founder of Joshua Homes, as well as the Co-Owner and COO for BTST Services Outpatient Mental Health Clinic, a mental health provider in Baltimore City, Prince George's County, Frederick County, Washington County. She wholeheartedly agrees with the agency's mission "to become the leader and trailblazer of both the health and social work fields..." In this capacity, Jada is a member of Baltimore County Schools Mental Health Committee, an Advisory Board Member of the Cecil County CSA, a Board Member of the Children's Guild and a member of the Charles Village Business Association. Most recently, Jada was honored as one of the "Women Who Move Maryland" given by the Baltimore Magazine.

It's Election Day in America. If you are not registered to vote, you can register when you go to your polling place. Go to the Maryland Board of Elections website to confirm where your polling place is, and bring some form of ID that proves you live in the district you're voting in. If you are using a mail-in ballot, you have until 8:00 tonight to drop your ballot in one of the drop boxes in your jurisdiction. If you are going to mail your ballot, it must be postmarked by 8:00 tonight. Nationally, more than 42 million people have already cast ballots. As of this morning, just under 400,000 people had submitted mail-in ballots here in MD. Another 382,000 voted early, in person. It will be more than a week before we have the final tallies in MD races. It could take even longer in other states. We hope you will join us tonight for Election Night in Maryland. Tom will be here in Studio A, beginning when the polls close at 8:00. NPR will cover the national races that will determine control of Congress and several Governor's seats. He'll have election results from across Maryland, as they become available. Again, our special live coverage begins at 8:00. _____________________________________________________ Today here on Midday, we're going to turn our attention to one of the features of city life here in Baltimore that make our city a great and unique place: our city's markets. Our system of markets is the oldest in the country, dating from the 1780s. Lexington Market gets a lot of attention as the city's largest market, but the other city markets scattered throughout the city are also vibrant food emporiums and community hubs. Tom's guest for the hour today is Paul Ruppert. He is the president and CEO of the Baltimore Public Markets Corporation, the non-profit company runs the city's six historic markets. They include: Broadway Market, Cross Street Market, Hollins Market, Northeast Market, Avenue Market and the separately incorporated Lexington Market, which is currently re-opening after a four-year, $45 million renovation project. Two-term limit for city officials? More clarity on Ballot Question K

Midday

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 27, 2022 48:32

Today on Midday, we're going to follow-up on a Midday exclusive story we brought you last week about Question K, a voter referendum issue that will appear on ballots in Baltimore city in the November election. Question K asks voters to decide whether or not city officials should be limited to two terms in office, beginning in 2024. Sounds simple enough, right? You hold an office for two terms, and you can't run for that office again unless you wait four years. When we first read the Question on a draft of the city ballot posted recently on the Maryland Board of Elections website, it never dawned on us that a candidate who is term-limited in one office would not be allowed to run for another office. For example, if someone serves as City Council President, after two terms, one assumes she could run for Mayor. That is exactly the intention of the organization who collected signatures to get the Question on the ballot. Last week, Tom spoke about the merits of term limits with former Mayors Sheila Dixon and Kurt Schmoke, who served as Mayor for three terms in the late 1980s and 1990s. Mayor Schmoke pointed out that the language of the Question on the ballot disallows a person from running for any office after having served 8 years. That's not what term limit proponents said when they wrote the actual language that will become part of the charter if this Question passes. That language specifically says that this provision “shall not preclude an elected official from seeking other elected office” in Baltimore City. So what are we voting for?And who is calling for the vote? That organization is called People for Elected Accountability & Civic Engagement. It's chaired by Jovani Patterson, a former Republican candidate for Baltimore City Council President, and the effort is largely funded by David Smith, the chair of Sinclair Broadcasting, a media company that owns Fox 45 and other stations around the country. So, today, let's talk about three things: Are term limits a good idea? It's legal, but is it proper for a media organization to actively promote changes to Baltimore City law? What happens when the language of what we're voting for is different than the statute that will result from that vote? We'll take the last question first. Tom spoke this morning with Jim Shea, the Baltimore City Solicitor, and we begin with their recorded conversation. Then, two veteran political observers weigh in on Question K. Larry Gibson of the University of Maryland, Baltimore, Carey School of Law, who joins us in Studio A; and Jayne Miller, who retired recently from WBAL Television, who joins us on Zoom. During the conversation, we are also joined on the phone by Question K proponent Jovani Patterson, chair of People for Elected Accountability & Civic Engagement, which is sponsoring the ballot initiative.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Written by GREG LARRY - FROSTBURG — Frostburg resident Albert Raley has his name on the ballot as a write-in candidate in 42 states and the District of Columbia as he continues with his run for the White House. Many people know of President Donald Trump and his Democratic challenger Joe Biden, but a visit to websites that track presidential candidacies reveals the names of hundreds of people across America who have registered to compete as write-in candidates. Raley, who has selected his wife Darlene M. Raley as his running mate, began pursuing the write-in candidacy last fall. By painstakingly submitting the required paperwork for each state and territory, he was able to get his name on all but eight states. A visit to the Maryland Board of Elections website shows 15 candidates on the ballot in addition to Trump and Biden. Appearing on the list of approved write-ins is Raley, whose name appears alongside other write-ins, such as rapper Kanye West. He realizes his chances are slim, but he won’t let that slow him down. “It’s real tough going from nobody to somebody,” Raley said. “I’m right now in 42 states and the District of Columbia. There is still those eight states that just won’t take write ins. That is unfair. But what I’ve instructed people to do in those states, is to write a letter to their governor and put in that, ‘I would like to vote for Albert Raley for president of the United States.’ I know it’s probably not going to be counted but at least that’s my attempt to try to be treated fairly.” The only states he could not gain approval were Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma and South Dakota. Raley has hoped to participate in more speaking engagements but COVID-19 has greatly reduced public events. He takes his candidacy seriously and has been campaigning by creating video messages he posts to Facebook and YouTube, which are filmed from the cab of his Ford F-250 Super Duty pickup. He is excited about choosing his wife Darlene as his running mate and thinks it could be a first. “I have been looking and I can’t find where a husband and wife have ran together before,” Raley said. “There is a lot of history and names to go through, but so far I have not seen where it’s happened.” Raley originally selected George R. Jones of Frostburg as his running mate. However, Jones stepped away due to health reasons. Raley is a 1972 graduate of Beall High School. He has four children and 11 grandchildren. Retired, he currently teaches driver education part-time. He is running as an independent under the slogan “Overhaul America.” Follow writer Greg Larry on Twitter https://www.twitter.com/GregLarryCTN https://www.twitter.com/AlbertRaley1 https://www.twitter.com/ontheroadwithj3 https://www.instagram.com/Albert_Raley54

Americans have long admired the resistance, tenacity and spirit of those brave souls who were travelers and conductors on the Underground Railroad. On this week’s PreserveCast, we’re heading back to those days to dredge up another chapter – and one far less proud – that of the reverse Underground Railroad which brought captured formerly free blacks back to slavery. It’s a difficult history – but one we must confront and we’ll explore it with Dr. Richard Bell, a distinguished scholar who recently authored a book on this overlooked story from American history. Dr. Richard Bell is Associate Professor of History at the University of Maryland. He holds a PhD from Harvard University and is author of the new book Stolen: Five Free Boys Kidnapped into Slavery and their Astonishing Odyssey Home. He has won more than a dozen teaching awards, including the University System of Maryland Board of Regents Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching, the highest honor for teaching faculty in the Maryland state system. He has held major research fellowships at Yale, Cambridge, and the Library of Congress and is the recipient of the National Endowment of the Humanities Public Scholar award. He serves as a Trustee of the Maryland Historical Society, as an elected member of the Colonial Society of Massachusetts, and as a fellow of the Royal Historical Society.

'What if There's Too Much Privacy?' with Michele Gilman (Ep. 211) Policymakers often discuss privacy as something that is lacking. But what if there is too much privacy? Michele Gilman joined Joe Miller to explain.  Bio  Michele Gilman (@profmgilman) is the Venable Professor of Law; Director, Saul Ewing Civil Advocacy Clinic; and Co-Director, Center on Applied Feminism at the University of Baltimore School of Law. She is also a faculty fellow at Data & Society in New York, where she focuses on the intersection of data privacy law with the concerns of low-income communities.  Before joining the faculty, Professor Gilman was a trial attorney in the Civil Rights Division at the Department of Justice; an associate at Arnold and Porter in Washington, D.C.; a law clerk to United States District Court Judge Frank A. Kaufman of the District of Maryland; and an editor of the Michigan Law Review. Professor Gilman's scholarship focuses on issues relating to poverty, privacy, economic inequality, and feminist legal theory and her articles have been published in the California Law Review, the Vanderbilt Law Review and the Washington University Law Review, among others. She was a visiting associate professor at the William and Mary School of Law during the 2005-06 academic year and a professor in the University of Aberdeen summer program in summer 2009. In 2009, she received the Outstanding Teaching by a Full-Time Faculty Member Award.  Professor Gilman directs the Saul Ewing Civil Advocacy Clinic, in which student attorneys represent individuals and community groups in a wide array of civil litigation and law reform projects. She is involved in numerous groups working on behalf of low-income Marylanders. She is a member of the Committee on Litigation and Legal Priorities of the ACLU of Maryland and the Judicial Selection Committee of the Women's Law Center. She is the past president of the board of the Public Justice Center, where she served from 2004-2014, as well as a past member of the Maryland Bar's Section Council on Delivery of Legal Services. She received the 2010 University System of Maryland Board of Regents' Award for Public Service. Professor Gilman is the former co-chair and a member of the Scholarship Committee of the AALS Clinical Legal Education Section, and a former editor of the Clinical Law Review Review and the Journal of Legal Education. She is also a co-director of the Center on Applied Feminism, which works to apply the insights of feminist legal theory to legal practice and policy. She is a member of the Maryland and District of Columbia bars.  Professor Gilman will be a faculty fellow at Data & Society in New York during the 2019-2020 academic year.  She will be focusing on the intersection of data privacy law with the concerns of low-income communities.  Resources   University of Baltimore School of Law  The Surveillance Gap: The Harms of Extreme Privacy and Data Marginalization by Michele Gilman (New York University Review of Law & Social Change, 2019).  News Roundup  Uber wins against woman in driver rape lawsuit  Uber was victorious last week in a sexual assault lawsuit brought against it by a woman who says she was raped near a San Francisco shopping mall last year, by a suspended Uber driver who still had the Uber decal on his window. In her pleadings before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley, the victim claimed that the suspended driver was acting within the scope of his employment and that she legitimately thought it would be a safe ride. But the court disagreed.  Judge Corley did find, however, that the victim had made out a plausible claim for negligence and permitted her to refile for punitive damages for negligence stemming from Uber’s apparent failure to ensure the driver removed the decal from his window. The driver still faces a criminal trial which could send him away for life.  Separately, Uber has begun videotaping rides. But the effort has faced resistance from privacy advocates.  Prisoners in West Virginia prisons to be charged $.03 per minute to read e-books  West Virginia prisoners will have to pay $.03 per minute to access e-books via Project Gutenberg, which otherwise offers the public free access to over 60,000 books. The West Virginia Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation (WVDCR) entered into a deal with Global Tel Link (GTL) to provide tablets to 10 prisons in West Virginia which will also allow inmates to watch videos and send written messages and photos. But the rates for those services, ranging between $.25 and $.50 per minute, are still very high relative to the $.04 per hour to $.58 per hour prisoners can earn in wages. The prisons will lift a current restriction on accessing books in print. But advocates who oppose the exploitative $.03 per minute fee for e-books note that the use of books in print comes with many more restrictions.  DC AG sues DoorDash for wage theft  DC Attorney General Karl Racine is suing DoorDash for pocketing tips the company solicits from customers. The Office of the Attorney General has been investigating the company since March, and now says that evidence shows that DoorDash routinely kept the tips to reduce the amount they had to pay drivers in wages.  Congresswoman Val Demings introduces bipartisan digital evidence bill  Florida Congresswoman Val Demings, a Democrat, has introduced new bipartisan legislation to improve law enforcement’s access to digital evidence from tech companies. The bill would create a new Office of Digital Law Enforcement within the Department of Justice to train law enforcement on how to handle digital evidence. It would also create a Center for Excellence for Digital Forensics to centralize tech expertise and legal assistance within the same building. The bill would also set up infrastructure for the DOJ to issue digital evidence program grants, as well as a Technology Policy Advisory Board to advise the Attorney General on digital evidence best practices.  Brooklyn landlord nixes facial recognition plan  A Brooklyn landlord has cancelled plans to install facial recognition technology after resistance from tenants and advocacy groups. Robert Nelson, President of Nelson Management Group, owns the 700-unit Atlantic Plaza Towers building in Brownsville where most tenants are black. Tenants and their supporters are now pushing for statewide legislation that would outlaw facial recognition technology throughout the Empire State.  Democrats call out Oracle on Diversity  Democratic lawmakers who are members of the House Tech Accountability Caucus, the Tri-Caucus, and the Congressional Black Caucus’ Diversity Task force called out Oracle for its lack of diversity in a letter to Oracle CEO Larry Ellison. The letter notes that Oracle has 0% board diversity, saying it is unacceptable given Oracle’s attempts to earn business from firms that serve people of color.
