Who gets credit for starting a meme? Usually... nobody — they're made too quickly and organically. In the case of one of the most famous bait-and-switch memes of all time, the "Rick Roll," we may be looking at something experts call convergent evolution. Did the Rick Roll originate with a piece of code on the message board 4Chan, or with a prank call to a local sports show in Michigan? And why does the Rick Roll have such staying power? Is it codified in the DNA of the song itself? We explore the meme's origin, the history of the song, "Never Gonna Give You Up," and its impact on both internet users during COVID-19 and on the performer himself. This episode was originally published on Oct. 08, 2021. *** Survey alert: Tell us what you love about the show, what you want more of; what you could stand a little less of. And if you complete the survey, we'll send you an extra episode (what Ben's calling a "dashboard confessional") in January. Take the survey here: wbur.org/endlessthreadsurvey Thank you!

This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit www.splitzoneduo.comAlex and Richard spend 23 minutes talking about Michigan's holiday hiring of former Utah coach Kyle Whittingham:* In a time of intense national focus on the age of people in leadership positions (hmm, wonder where that came from), the 66-year-old Whittingham is unusually old to be taking this job. We wouldn't worry.* Whittingham's recruiting at Utah became a pressure point that may have contributed to him leaving. How much does that matter as he moves to a job with a built-in financial advantage?* Whittingham has been coaching Big Ten teams in the Pac-12 and Big 12 for years. What does he need to do differently in the ACTUAL Big Ten?
In this episode of the Podcast of Champions hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back to discuss the Oregon Ducks taking care of business against James Madison, advancing in the College Football Playoffs and putting three Big Ten programs into the quarterfinals. The guys look ahead to the rest of the Big Ten bowl games, previewing each of them and giving their picks against the spread. Northwestern, Minnesota, Penn State, Illinois, USC, Iowa, Michigan & Nebraska are all in action before the calendar turns to 2026. Chances are you've heard this low-end thumper in your bass woofers, or have seen him perform around Michigan (as well as the world). He's performed with various national acts, including Bettye LaVette, Sturgill Simpson, Brett Lucas, Mitch Ryder, and more. He's a 'first-call' from the bass master. himself, Michigan's Don Was for multiple studio projects. Chuck Bartels lives, eats, breathes, and is raising a happy family out of Detroit and happy to offer his services for a variety of musical styles, as he often as he can. Chuck jumped into performing in the early '90s and has rounded the 'bases' with jazz, jam, Americana, blues, tribute showcases, R&B, soul, rock, and so much more. His ability to be as down-to-earth has garnished him quite a 'word-of-mouth' career. The MMHP was so grateful to line up this world-class bassist for a career retrospective in Bay City in early 2025. In part 2 of 2, Chuck offers background on the recordings he has helped make that should have taken off, his nature balance on home life and touring, his dream gig, and some bands from the past that fans should seek out. This epic hang is perfect for you all, looking to absorb some of the best current and national music that this man has touched. Thank you all for tuning into part one and ENJOY!

From growing up broke in Michigan to dirt roads, sketchy neighbors, big risks, and parents who were way too young and figuring it out as they went, this episode is funny, honest, and a little chaotic. It is filled with moments that suddenly make a lot of things click without tying it up in a neat bow. This story is just getting started, so be sure to watch for Part 2, where things take a very unexpected turn.

Within the last three months, we already discussed: a Chinese woman, from Wuhan of all places, who was smuggling in roundworms through the mail—while studying at a lab in Michigan; a couple, boyfriend and girlfriend (both Chinese nationals, also working at that Michigan lab) who were smuggling in a dangerous fungus—a type of deadly fungus that can target crops; and now, the FBI just arrested another Chinese national—this one studying for his doctorate at Indiana University—and he was allegedly smuggling plasmid DNA derived from E. coli bacteria from China hidden inside women's underwear. Let's go through the details of this new case together.

Let's start with the juicy but sad breakup of Notre Dame and USC, move to the coaching carousel, and then have some fun. A rough listing of the questions featured in this episode, in order:* What's actually going on with Notre Dame and USC breaking up their football rivalry, and whose fault is it?* What is Michigan's realistic play in the coaching carousel, and who could they actually hire?* Is Michigan likely to have a coach in place by the bowl game, or is that assumption wrong?* Is a bridge coach (specifically Biff Poggi) a viable or sensible option for Michigan?* Kyle Whittingham vs. Brian Kelly: Who is the better “CEO” head coach?* With so many Power 4 openings, is the best path to a top job now being a successful P4 coordinator?* What happened at Ohio, how should they move forward, and why did they handle it better than Michigan?* Why does Warde Manuel still have a job (pending investigation)?* Is Pat Fitzgerald possibly a worse pure football coach than Jonathan Smith but better positioned because of NIL and donor buy-in? Is “coach who can unlock donor money” now a core hiring archetype?* Will Michigan State's new $400 million donation allow them to immediately spend big on the roster?* What are agency “speed-dating” events for coaches and athletic directors?* Does the modern college football calendar make it harder for FCS programs to reset or fire coaches?* Will the calendar lead to more long-tenured FCS coaches staying put at big programs?* What are the chances Ed Orgeron resurfaces on LSU's staff?* Why didn't Dan Mullen come up for any of the open head coaching jobs?* What's really wrong at Florida State beyond portal hits and misses?* If an AD tried to reverse-engineer Curt Cignetti, what traits would they be looking for?* What goes on your CFB trip bucket list?* New York or LA: The better CFB city?* Why do national college football narratives so often default to NY/LA logic when the sport itself doesn't?* What are our goals for this podcast in 2026?Thank you so much for being part of what we do. We'll see you around New Year's Eve to get you set for the CFP quarterfinals and FCS title game.Producer: Anthony Vito
