When you launch a Google search ads campaign that's going to rank for not just your keyword or phrase but options like it as well.  Some of them won't be relevant to your B2B SaaS.  Let's discuss how to further optimize your campaign to solve this problem with something called negative keywords.Free product-market fit course - https://nxtstep.io/fitEpisode Transcript Hey folks, Sean here, and today what I want to talk to you about is further optimizing your Google search ad campaigns with respect to negative keywords. Now, as I've mentioned before, I like Google search ads for attempting to validate as much as you can about your unique value proposition for your B2B SaaS, especially in the early days.It is a relatively quick and cost effective way to see whether or not. You can cost effectively convert impressions to clicks to users and to customers. If you're able to do that and you're able to do that in a way that produces a positive return or even enables you to break even maybe on your first or second month's, uh, volume of revenue, then you've got great traction. And this can be positive momentum that you need in order to continue to grow and scale from here. It also set you up further than down the road to invest in. Content marketing and a whole bunch of other things that we're gonna talk about as well. But for today's episode, I want to talk about negative keywords. Now, when I say negative keywords, what I mean is. After you set up a search campaign, what that's ultimately gonna do is gonna require you to pick a keyword word or phrase. But you're also gonna rank for other combinations that are similarly related to that keyword word or phrase. But not all of them are gonna be relevant, and this is where negative keywords come into play. So, for example, for my podcast show notes tool, that's what I wanna rank for. I wanna rank for people looking for. Help creating show notes. What I don't wanna rank for is people are looking for help starting a podcast because it's not what my tool does, it doesn't provide any value for those folks. So B, before I created essentially my negative keyword list in Google search ads, I was.Ultimately getting traffic to my site, that was not as accurate as it could be. I was, people were finding me, I was getting impressions and sometimes even clicks, but that of which I was paying for related to that traffic in terms of what they were searching for, which isn't relevant to my tool, was something that was zapping my budget. So it was something that I was paying for, but I was never gonna get. Any results out of that? Definitely more than likely no usage or revenue. Once those people wound up on my site or saw my ad and didn't click on it, uh, saw my site and realized that the tool doesn't do anything for them. That is wasted budget. So in order to optimize this, what you wanna do is you wanna hammer your negative keywords. And what I mean by that is you want to create a list of negative keywords that you want to continually update as you are going in there and and monitoring your ad campaign in terms of how well it's performing, to make sure that you're not ranking for any keywords that are not relevant to whatever it is your tool does. Now this is gonna happen automatically, so you need to continually. Monitor to make sure that you're not falling into this trap as well too, because it's going to zap your budget and it's only gonna be sending you bad traffic that you're gonna have to pay for. So make sure you do your research on negative keywords and that you maintain that as you're looking to further optimize your campaign, especially if this is one of your more effective channels, uh, and in the beginning when you're trying to ultimately validate that unique value proposition. This traffic could be really important because the more you optimize it, the the better it's gonna perform. Paying for the wrong kind of traffic on Google will absolutely kill your conversions. In this episode, Jordan West talks all about negative keywords, and how to avoid wasting your hard-earned money on keywords guaranteed to not convert. Listen up and learn from this episode!Key takeaways from this episode:By using negative keywords, we're telling Google that we don't want to bid on these specific keywords. There are a lot of keywords that we don't want to show up for, that we might accidentally if not specifically stating otherwise. One of the ways that Google ranks SEO is time spent on a page and amount of pages visited. If you're showing up for irrelevant search terms, you're not giving value. Some of the keyword searches we do not want to show up for:Amazon. We do not want to show up for anything to do with ‘Amazon'. If somebody is typing ‘Amazon', they want to shop on Amazon. App. Unless you have an app.Article. You don't want to show up when somebody is typing ‘article' because they are not at the bottom of the funnel, and their search has very little buying intent. Here are a few additional keywords you want to ensure you don't show up for:Benefit/s, blog/s, books, blow-outs, cheap, cheapest, clear-outs (unless you're running some clear-outs website), closeout, code, coupon code, deal-of-the-week, deal-of-the-day, deals, discount, discount codes, price shoppers, negative reviews, good reviews, comparisons, Amazon reviews, Advice. As an eCommerce brand, we also don't want to show up for location-based searches, unless you have retail locations on that location.Connect with Jordan here:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jordan-west-marketer/Twitter: https://twitter.com/jordantwestecomGet 5 Offers for 2 Products (10 in total) along with 10 highly engaging tried and true creatives, 30 captivating headlines, descriptions, and ad texts sent to you for only $99. Rob shares his strategy in setting up Google Ads (formerly AdWords) campaigns for Funeral Homes and Cremation Providers who are trying to attract at-need first calls. For more information about Funeral Results Marketing, check out our Funeral Home Website section, Cremation Arrangement section, or Digital Marketing Services section on our website or contact Rob at robin@funeralresults.com or at 1-800-810-3595. See the complete transcript here: Rob Heppell: Welcome back to the Funeral X Podcast. I am Robin Heppell and I'm joined with my Funeral Results Marketing business partner, Jake Johnson. Hey there, Jake. Jake Johnson: Hey Rob. Rob Heppell: How's it going today? Jake Johnson: Life is good, right? We're all living the dream. Rob Heppell: We are. Well, this is good. We're getting close to the spring here. Although I know in Arizona, you guys don't see many differences in the seasons, where we are, we yearn for the spring. Jake Johnson: Yes. We usually look for January, February, and March to just be repeatable, and that just never happens. Rob Heppell: Yes. I don't think other places up north here, near the 49th parallel, want any repeat of December, January, February. Jake Johnson: Yes, there's usually not much sympathy with my statement. Rob Heppell: Hey, today, I think we're going to go into, we've had some questions come in about Google Ads and getting it set up for a funeral home and getting it set up for online cremation. And I thought maybe I just run through like a best practices, like a 101 getting it set up. There are obviously going to be more advanced things to do, but obviously, we'd like to help folks out with these services. But I think just even having a better understanding, it's good to know at least what you're getting into, whether you do it or not versus being totally oblivious to all the things that go on inside those accounts. And as you know, it continues to change. Google keeps on changing the tactics they're trying. They are getting more artificial intelligence working and machine work in there. And it doesn't always favor funeral homes. So I thought I just run through that and maybe feel free to ask questions as we go, as you are a funeral home owner yourself in an online cremation business. Jake Johnson: I think it's definitely a valuable thing to go through. My first introduction to Google Ads, Rob, as you venture into explaining to everybody what it does, was for me it was like 2006 and I was asking my neighbor about it. And I said, "Do you do it?" He says, "Well, it's very much part of my business." He had an online training business. I said, "Well, how much do you spend?" I felt like a big guy. I spend 2,500 a month in ads spend and had these keyword campaigns I was constantly refining. And he said he spent about 30,000 a month. It just floored me.And I'll tell you what it was. It was a lesson though in something that, in sales, we don't see the big picture sometimes. And that's determining how much is the… I think you have the overall, you have [ROAS] I think you call, but the cost for the acquisition of the customer or whatever it is you're selling. And so for him 30,000 a month translated into exponential growth for his company. And I think we can all get blinded by costs and not realize what it's doing for our business, but as you know, and I'm sure you're going to share, I mean, there are certain things you need to be aware of because if you're spending, I'll use 2,500, if you're spending 2,500 incorrectly, then you're not getting the returns and you're just blowing money. But you're feeling good because you got Google Ads. I mean, there's definitely a trick to it and I learned a lot from you. So I think it's a good episode. Rob Heppell: Yes, you bet.

[our company name] is the same keyword [clients] might search for.(23:25) Let's say my click share is 60% and I have 60 clicks. I know that the meaning is that there are 40 clicks that I could have received, but didn't. My question is does it mean the 40 clicks went to my competitor's ads? Or it could have gone to my organic ad or my competitor's organic ad? Does click share measure from a potential click from paid media only?(33:31) With bounce rate becoming obsolete and being replaced in GA4, do you think Google has been calculating it wrong all this time? Can you shed any insights on how bounce rate and engaged sessions may differ or be the same?(39:58) How do you transition from a very complex setup with multiple campaigns and ad groups that are time-consuming and low performing to the new SKAG structure?(45:33) I'd appreciate you talking about negative keywords and how precise they are now versus in the past and if things are changing in the less "word for word" Google Ads world we live in today. So let's say your business is running Google Ads (formerly known as Google Adwords) as a layer to your digital marketing strategy. But let's say you have a product that is a little more niche than most. Let's say it's a special lighting product for campers. Bear with me, this applies to any business, really. You want to show for as many searches as possible, but you want to only really show for relevant searches. You want to show for as many RELEVANT searches as possible. Why? Because you don't want to pay for clicks that are looking for cheap light bulbs for example. Thus, you're likely to have a keyword strategy that has a lot of exact matches and phrase matches for things like "camping lamps" and such. But you probably also want to weed out keywords like "cheap light bulbs." You can set "cheap" and "bulb" or "bulbs" as negative keywords - as ONE example of likely several that you'd want to include for example. While you probably need to think through your strategy, this video explains HOW to do it. If you need more help thinking through the strategy or looking at data that can help, email me at paul@datadriven.design.
