One of the most common stories I hear is, "I'm not ready yet." You have a dream, a goal, an ambition, but without the connections, skills, or resources it feels out of reach. Social media makes it easy to see others' success without showing the REAL stuff. Late nights, blood, sweat, tears… the messy middle doesn't make the highlight reel. This mindset undermines our confidence and inhibits creativity. Chances are, you do have what you need to get started. Today's show is going to prove it to you. Ellen Bennett, Founder of Hedley and Bennett and author of DREAM FIRST, DETAILS LATER, lifts the curtains to talk about her uncertain, circuitous, passion-driven journey. After a difficult divorce at age 9, Ellen was raised by her mother, who worked long hours to keep the lights on and the family fed. At 18, a two-month trip to Mexico turned into 4 years before Ellen returned to the U.S., walked in the back door of a Michelin star restaurant and asked for a job as a line cook. There, she observed the challenges cooks faced- one of them being the one-size fits all aprons that wore out, caused problems and generally weren't quality products. Hedley and Bennett is now one of the world's leading Apron manufacturers, collaborating with tastemakers like Martha Stewart and Alton Brown and top chefs like David Chang, April Bloomfield, and Nobu Matsuhisa. For aspiring entrepreneurs stuck in analysis paralysis, creatives procrastinating on a personal project, or anyone caught in obsessive over-planning, Ellen shares her gutsy personal playbook to putting your inner worrier on silent and leaping into action. Shep's ideas and marketing antics are well-known and helped bring fame and notoriety to many of his clients, most notably Alice Cooper. This isn't just another interview. Andy is digging deep into Shep's thoughts on his long and storied career. For instance, his entire outlook on his career took shape after one amazing college prank. Soon the papers picked up the story when one of his friends was dressing up as this esteemed person. It was then that Shep learned that we have the ability to write history. It's all in the delivery of the information. That one prank led to a long list of marketing stunts specifically designed to elevate and lengthen the careers of his clients, including Alice Cooper. Listen as Shep shares stories from his past and how they've informed his present. Not only has he come through Covid and all that it entails, but he's also a brand new dad. C’est le cas de la cuisine nikkei.Arès avoir consacré l’épisode #110 à la cuisine fusion, Émilie s’intéresse dans cette brève à la cuisine nikkei, née de la rencontre entre cuisine japonaise et péruvienne. Nobuyuki Matsuhisa has more than 40 restaurants spread across six continents, many of them frequented by some of the world’s top celebrities. His business partner and friend is Hollywood star Robert De Niro, and he’s even been in a handful of movies himself. Nobu, as he's known, is one of the most famous chefs in the world, but his early life and career were marked by tragedy and disaster – his father died in a motorcycle accident when he was eight, and one of his first restaurants burnt to the ground just weeks after opening, leaving him broke and contemplating suicide. But the sushi master eventually plucked up the courage to give the restaurant business one last shot, and his eponymous restaurant in Beverley Hills, California, was a huge success. He tells Graihagh Jackson the story of his life through five of his most memorable dishes, from the miso soup whose aroma would wake him most mornings as a child, to the dish that caught the attention of Robert De Niro and eventually catapulted him to global fame. Shep has worked with, and befriended, some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry, from Alice Cooper to Bette Davis, Raquel Welch to Groucho Marx, Blondie to Jimi Hendrix, Sylvester Stallone to Salvador Dali, Luther Vandross to Teddy Pendergrass. Anthony Bourdain, a huge fan of Shep's, released a memoir detailing Shep's life and adventures, titled They Call Me Supermensch: A Backstage Pass To The Amazing World Of Film, Food, and Rock 'N' Roll. _ Snacky Tunes _ is back with a brand new episode featuring Chef Johnny Zone of Howlin’ Rays Hot Chicken and musical guest Jaye Bartell. Straight from the scene in Los Angeles, host Darin Bresnitz is in conversation with Johnny, talking his serious passion for fried chicken. An LA native, Johnny shares that he has worked under some of the best chefs in the world, including Thomas Keller, Gordon Ramsay and Nobu Matsuhisa.  Last year, during a stage at Sean Brock’s Husk in Nashville, a local chef introduced Johnny to Nashville Hot Chicken. It was instantaneous love. Johnny brought back tales of this hidden gem to LA and thus Howlin’ Rays was born. In the second half of the show, Greg Bresnitz welcomes musician Jaye Bartell to the studio.  Born in Massachusetts, Jaye Bartell moved to Asheville, NC, in the early 2000s where he began playing music among friends as a parallel activity to his work with poetry and other writing. Writing was his main focus for most of a decade—a time that involved constant traveling and moving around the U.S., mostly between North Carolina and the Pacific Northwest, where he lived on a small island in northern Washington. It wasn’t until Jaye moved to Greenpoint, Brooklyn in the fall of 2013, where he began working on the new set of material that will furnish his next release — a set of songs that examine and resist transcendence, dissociation, and departure to “find a home on earth” as Robert Creeley wrote, and take images and inspiration from hot air balloons, Spalding Gray, and the neighborhood around McGolrick Park. “The beauty to me is its [hot chicken] relatability in all culture… Why I fell in love with it is the heat really opened up my palate, it gave me a different sensation!” [28:45] –Johnny Zone on Snacky Tunes
