In this episode, we take a jaunt to New York to find out about the talented and difficult Patricia Highsmith. You might know one of her most notorious characters, Tom Ripley, from your Netflix queue (the new series Ripley) or via one of the many films based on what might be Highsmith's best-known novel, The Talented Mr. Ripley. Highsmith wrote several books that redefined the concept of the thriller, as well as one of the few stories to give a lesbian couple a happy ending. That novel, The Price of Salt, was adapted into the 2015 film Carol, starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. It was inspired by one of Highsmith's many obsessive relationships (or in this case, just an obsession) with women. Long a closeted lesbian, Highsmith was engaged to a man (as required by 1950s societal mores) yet aggressively seduced lady after lady. She also wrote obsessively, was highly ambitious, and kept thousands of pages of diaries written in various languages to avoid spilling her secrets (they have been translated since her death in 1995). She was misanthropic and bigoted, and even her friends considered her unpleasant to be around, but her psychological thrillers have remained classics, partly for how they provide insight into the mind of the criminal. The talk by writer and educator Hannah Meyer comes courtesy of our friends at Dead Ladies NYC. We had the pleasure of interviewing Judah & the Lion over Zoom video!“Floating in the Night,” the follow-up to “Great Decisions,” Nashville crossover folk heroes Judah & the Lion (Judah Akers and Brian Macdonald) double down on the post break-up anger – but stretch towards forgiveness. The soul-baring new single is from their forthcoming album, The Process, which will be released on May 10 via Cletus the Van / Downtown Artist & Label Services.Judah says, “Anger was something I wasn't allowed to feel growing up. The notion that everything had to be “okay” and not be justifiably angry only hurt me and my chronic back pain. When people who hurt you don't take your pain seriously. That fucking sucks. I won't let that happen again.” The Process, their fifth studio album, was inspired by singer Judah's personal life and struggles. Both he and Brian are sons of therapists, so groundbreaking psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross' five stages of grief came to mind – Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance – as they began work on the album. Interludes set the tone for song suites dedicated to each of the five stages. Leading up to release of “Floating in the Night,” Judah & the Lion teased the single and shared about the role anger plays in the healing process in a series of short videos. Influencer jordanbyrness amplified the message with her “YALL. AREN'T. HEARING. HIM.” post.Judah & the Lion will be performing some of the new songs on tour this spring. The extensive North American run will kick off on April 25 at PNC Music Pavilion in Charlotte, NC and include shows at Colorado's Red Rocks Amphitheatre (May 19) and The Rooftop at Pier 17 in NYC (May 31).The Process is buoyant, impassioned and emotionally connective. The band has a reinvigorated sense of purpose with its aim to create music that resonates deeply, believing in music's power to connect people and make them feel less alone in life's journey. The band began releasing songs from The Process last year. The new material has racked up nearly 10 million combined global streams to date and earned spots on numerous playlists across all DSPs, including Spotify's New Music Friday, Apple Music's New Music Daily and Amazon Music's Alternative Hits, with additional support from SiriusXM Alt Nation's “Advanced Placement,” Pandora, YouTube, SoundCloud, Tidal, Audiomack and Deezer.Since their 2012 debut EP, Judah & the Lion have earned widespread acclaim for their genre-bending music, received Platinum/Gold certifications, amassed over one billion career streams and sold over 500 million tickets. Six of their hit singles have gone Top 15 on Alternative radio and the band won an iHeart Music Award for Best New Alt Rock Band of 2018. The Process is the follow-up to 2022's Revival, which Atwood Magazine praised as an “electric embrace of what it means to be alive: Soaring through limitless euphoric highs, dwelling in gut-wrenching lows, and soaking up all the feeling in between.”We want to hear from you! From the late 1960s to mid- 1970s, David Hammons captivated the art world with his body prints, using his naked body as a printing plate in meditations on African-American existence, and later works including a snowball-selling performance in the East Village and sculptures made of hair collected from Harlem barbers — all the while sharply defying establishment categories and rules of commerce. An unconventional chronicle of Hammons's life and work (now 79, he believes “the less they know about me the better”), THE MELT GOES ON FOREVER captures his playful, no-bullshit spirit and conceptual integrity, using archival footage and rare interviews, dynamic animation and sound art, and candid accounts by eminent artists curators and critics (Betye Saar, Suzanne Jackson, Henry Taylor, Lorna Simpson, among others). Hammons's profound critiques of racial and social inequality illuminate and implicate simultaneously. THE MELT GOES ON FOREVER chronicles Hammons' category-defying practice – rooted in a deep critique of American society and the elite art world – is in the words of one art critic “an invitation to confront the fissures between races” as the artist seeks to go beyond the dominant culture and his own to a new one for the 21st century. Co-directors Judd Tully (American Greed: The Art of the Steal, Driven to Abstraction) and Harold Crooks (The Price We Pay, The Corporation) stop by to talk about David Hammons has constantly defied the establishment and remains to this day a subversive voice, evocative, defiant, nuanced and relevant. Splice Machine announced the company’s new data science workbench, ML Manager, at the Spark + AI Summit 2019 being held April 23-25, in San Francisco, CA. Cory caught up with Splice Machine's founder and CEO, Monte Zweben, about how Splice Machine bridges the gap between operational databases and the tools used by data scientists to power modern AI. Splice Machine’s new Data Science Workbench, called ML Manager, empowers data science teams to maximize the performance of their machine learning models by removing the latency associated with building complex data pipelines, performing cumbersome transformations and training models on updated data. At the Spark+AI Summit, Monte presented, “Without Operational AI, Your ML Model is Stale” which will discussed how companies can integrate OLTP, OLAP and ML capabilities in a unified platform to make intelligent decisions in real time using data at scale. The resulting SQL platform reduces data movement and therefore enables training on real-time data and testing on real-time data leading to better decision-making. Chaotic episode brought to you by the 3 bags of drinks brandon decided to bring for himself and our guests Geraldine Viswanathan & Ayo Edebriri. Brandon also wanted to mention that this was recorded before the controversial NYT hit piece on the Aperol Spritz which he will be addressing in a later episode. Brandon drank a lot of spritzes in this episode and we ended up locking him out of the building for a decent amount of time. Come see us live in NYC May 31st with Adam Friedland!
