On this week's Fourth Estate we look at the "omnishambles" (to quote Justice Michael Lee) that was the Bruce Lehrmann v Network 10 and Lisa Wilkinson defamation trial. While Lehrmann walked away a proven rapist (in the balance of probabilities), nobody really got off lightly, especially not the media. Host, Tina Quinn is joined by Kate McClymont, Chief Investigative Reporter at The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, Amy Remeikis, Guardian Australia's Political Reporter and former current affairs producer, Anthony McClellan. Much to dissect. Joining us is the best political poll anorak around, Mr irishelectionprojections.com Harry McEvansoneya and the man behind Ireland Thinks, (the only company to produce post-vote polling) Kevin Cunningham. For the second successive season Alpine heads into Formula 1's summer break reeling from a bombshell announcement. This time it's as a result of a slightly earlier, in-house decision to part ways with team principal Otmar Szafnauer and long-time sporting director Alan Permane on the same weekend it lost veteran F1 engineer Pat Fry to Williams. Scott Mitchell-Malm and Josh Suttill join Edd Straw to dissect Alpine's choices including what it says about the Alpine 'project' in F1 and where the team goes from here. There's also a discussion about what Fry's signing means for Williams as well as the panel's thoughts on four-time F1 champion Alain Prost's "distressed" reaction to the team's strife. It feels like every week is a busy one in British politics, but this was an especially full one. Downing Street was forced to apologise to Buckingham Palace for two staff parties in No 10 on the night before Prince Philip's funeral. This comes after weeks of investigations, accusations and revelations about parties, work events and gatherings held by political staff at Number ten Downing St. The UK's Prime Minister Boris Johnston has been fending away questions about his involvement, saying he is waiting for the results of an independent inquiry led by Sue Gray. Meanwhile, Prince Andrew's military titles and royal patronages have been returned to the Queen and he will stop using the title His Royal Highness in an official capacity. This comes after a US court ruled that a civil action over sexual assault allegations brought by Virginia Giuffre could go ahead. So, what on earth is going on? Emile is joined by UK correspondent Olly Barratt.
This week we take aim at... English words, Like How?Amy introduced tonight's topic and explained how this topic came from another topic we covered recently being English words, like why? Tonight we thought we would dive into how words are created and some of our favourite created words. According to research (not ours), there are 13 ways in which new words are created. Amy then discussed some words she recently discovered being omnishambles and meh. She also gave a special shout out to Mc Job which is a word used to describe a low paying job with little to no opportunity for advancement. Bianca filled in the middle discussing the use of "ard" at the end of a word and despite it being fun to say it's actually a derogatory term. Bianca also threw in some of her famous tidbits (we now call them titbits) discussing how the use of a foreign word can mean the object of the word is named the same thing twice but in different languages. Sarah finished us off by explaining how words are not her friends and escape her most of the time. She then discussed four words that she enjoys saying being collywobbles, lollygag, erinaceous, nudiustertian, and pauciloquent. We say it every week, however, we really want to hear from our listeners. There's always a bit of a fun game that comes toward the end of the year, with the selection of a Word of the Year. Previous years have highlighted words like “doomscrolling” or “fake news” or “Brexit” – words that really call out ideas, insights or themes that defined that year. Looking back at 2021, what will you be nominating? As we're inching towards the close of 2021, let's have a bit of fun and reflect somewhat on what word our Org-ology friends might designate as the word that best describes 2021. What vocabulary have you been seeing? What ideas keep popping up? As Org-ology, what would you select as the Word of the Year?
This week we look at what the hell is going on with Sri Lankan cricket. Cause, it's not going well over there. So I got on Estelle Vasudevan to try explain it all to me. Ireland are on a winning streak and its the poor miserable mediocre Magyars next on the chopping block. Ken shows Murph Hungary's recent record..... England fans once again booed their own players for taking a knee before the Romania game. We discuss Gareth Southgate's handling of this situation, Nigel Farage's response, the worrying make up of the England crowd and just what a fraught build-up its been ahead of what is a de facto home tournament for them. We talk to the brilliant Tim Vickery about the Copa Clusterfuck, why mid pandemic Brazil are now hosting it, if the players will protest, and how Bolsonaro is using the tournament to sell his political philosophy. Plus there's Jordan Henderson's body language and the most read article on The Guardian website today.
It's "philosophy, but fun!" today on ThunkTink as the randomness of the universe decides Casey and Andrea should brainstorm logic! Can we make reason more positive and engaging to remove it from its stuffy, emotionless stereotypes? Can we make tag-team improv art-based debates? How do we best support the development of the tools of logic and reason? Was this episode recorded at the end of 2020 during a deeply psychologically taxing time in our modern history? All discussed in today's ThunkTink!

A study released last week looked at the true numbers of COVID-19 infections based on mortality rates. In doing so, it painted a grim picture for a number of countries including the United Kingdom. On this Democracy Sausage, we hear from one of the authors of that report, Professor Quentin Grafton.Australia may have the coronavirus largely under control for now, but elsewhere in the world countries are still suffering staggeringly high numbers of infections and deaths. But a study published last week ‘backcasted’ true rates of infections based on mortality. In doing so, it found infection rates in some countries far higher than official statistics suggest: in the UK the study suggested infection rates are 16 times higher than the published numbers. On this Democracy Sausage, Professor Mark Kenny is joined by regular podleague Dr Marija Taflaga and one of the authors of the report, Professor Quentin Grafton. The panel talk about Europe and the US’ COVID-19 challenge, Australia’s response, and Quentin makes his pitch to Netflix for a new documentary called The Clown.Quentin Grafton is Professor of Economics, Australian Laureate Fellow, Convenor of the Water Justice Hub, and Director of the Centre for Water Economics, Environment and Policy at ANU Crawford School of Public Policy. Omnishambles is a noun that refers to a situation where poor judgement results in chaos. Emerging in the early 21st century, our word of the day is a very recent addition to English language, combining the Latin omnis, (OME nees) meaning ‘all’ with shambles, meaning total disorder. Craig thought he had control of the plumbing, but he returned home to find an omnishambles unfolding on his bathroom floor.

This week, we discuss what it’s like operating as a Washington lobbyist in the Donald Trump era. Fortunately, we have a former Trump adviser and longtime Republican operative on the show to take us through the gory details, what it was like working for The Donald, and how President Trump changed and repopulated the “Swamp” that he campaigned to destroy with extreme prejudice. This week’s guest: Barry Bennett, a former senior adviser to the 2016 Trump campaign and a founder of lobbying firm Avenue Strategies.
This week’s guest: Adam Jentleson, Public Affairs Director at Democracy Forward and former Deputy Chief of Staff to former Senator Harry Reid. This week we discuss the latest policy debates pulling the Democratic Party sharper to its left, how to separate the noise from the actual substance with candidates such as Amy Klobuchar and Elizabeth Warren, and lastly, we try to solve the age-old puzzle: How do you make discussions about the costs and benefits of nuking the filibuster sexy??

Omnishambles - 02/02/19 Omnishambles was the most appropriate name I could think of for this show, frankly I have no idea what actually happened. I REALLY hope you like my latest show intro. Shoutout to Miss Morgan and Carlito, all love. Also enjoy the new Sea Tac Anthem song which I release somewhere sometime. There was Corporate and Inked and lots of technical problems, some prank calls, something about a good Taco Bell call, Macron got faded again we all talked a lot about stuff and things but I think we generally had a good time. I wasn't going to bother uploading this show because I didn't think it was any good, but actually since I can't even remember it and people are telling me to do it then here you go. It's all your fault. Enjoy and pray for Macron. Thank you to our kind supporters, all the people that listened live on Mixlr and YouTube and everyone checking out our podcast. I love you very much and keep it locked to macronshow.com where hopefully Macron will one day find sobriety. I love you though! [sdm_download id="1696"] [sdm-download-counter id="1696"]
On this week’s episode of Omnishambles, host Jackie Kucinich welcomes The Daily Beast’s White House reporter Asawin Suebsaeng, and our very first guest from the upper ranks of Trumpworld: Marc Short, President Donald Trump's former legislative affairs director and a current Miller Center senior fellow at the University of Virginia. On this episode, Marc talks about his experience working in the Trump White House, the advice he would give Republicans and Democrats today caught in the border-wall and immigration standoff, what "the administration should have done from the start," and why he believes Trump's emergency declaration is now all but an inevitability.
On this week’s episode of OMNISHAMBLES, host Sam Stein welcomes The Daily Beast’s tech reporter and "Extremely Online" expert Will Sommer and White House and Trumpworld reporter Asawin Suebsaeng to discuss an almost quaint topic: What is truth, even, in the era of Donald Trump? Will breaks down the online and conservative backlash to the Covington students, and how the immediate, social-media-fueled fury rivaled partisan passions not seen since perhaps the Brett Kavanaugh hearings. Swin and Sam discuss how when Trumpworld and Rudy Giuliani denounce Michael Cohen as a proven, prolific liar who cannot be trusted, they—well—have a point. And all three take a much-unneeded jaunt down Memory Lane, to conspiracy theories and racist rumor-mongering of years past, and how it all paved the way for the current era of political and media "post-truth." Subscribe and listen to Omnishambles for free on Apple Podcasts and Google Play.
On this week’s episode of Omnishambles, host Jackie Kucinich welcomes The Daily Beast’s national-security reporter Erin Banco, as well as White House and Trumpworld reporter Asawin Suebsaeng. Erin breaks down the latest Donald Trump-Russia bombshells that detonated over the president's snowed-in weekend, and also offers up listeners a new, hot scoop: the ongoing government shutdown has led the Pompeo-era State Department officials to come into work to do little more than clean their offices—while literally still wearing their pajamas. Jackie and Swin also discuss their reporting on the latest shutdown bedlam self-inflicted by Trump and his team, including a scene from Friday morning (a particularly perfect metaphor for the state of play...) in which senior White House official Mercedes Schlapp urges Republicans on Capitol Hill to rebut Democratic chatter that a Trump national-emergency declaration is imminent—even though she conceded on the call that Trump's own senior staffers had no idea if such a declaration was imminent or not. Swin and Jackie also dig in on the racist rhetoric—and policy proposals—of Rep. Steve King, and how President Trump talks about the far-right, anti-immigrant congressman when he's not around. "Trump's immigration policy is basically in line with what Steve King has been pushing since the early 2000s," Jackie says. "He used to wheel...out a model of the wall, and have little barbed wire that he would lace through, and he would build it on the [House] floor," Jackie recounted of when she used to cover Rep. King years before Trumpism came along.
On this week’s episode of Omnishambles, hosts Jackie Kucinich and Sam Stein welcome The Daily Beast’s national-security and immigration reporter Betsy Woodruff and White House and Trumpworld correspondent Asawin Suebsaeng, the latter of whom Sam and Jackie failed to keep locked in a broom closet during podcast taping, eventually acquiescing to his pleas to get mic'd. On the issue of President Donald Trump's proposed big, beautiful, steel(?) wall, Betsy stopped by the show to discuss why the idiotic arguments on border security and immigration are not exclusively the domain of Team Trump and the right. Betsy also breaks down how the conversation of border barriers sounds behind the scenes and in the halls of places like the Department of Homeland Security, as opposed to how they sound splashed across cable news and @realDonaldTrump's frenetic Twitter. Sam asks the class if we may be headed for an endgame of a big, secret, invisible Trump wall. Swin ponders that liberals would still hate the "racism wall" if it were made of clay instead of steel or concrete.
On this week’s episode of Omnishambles, host Sam Stein welcomes The Daily Beast’s White House and Trumpworld reporting duo Lachlan Markay and Asawin Suebsaeng. The topic of outrage and fascination for this week is President Donald Trump’s lead attorney for the Russia probe, Rudy Giuliani, the former New York mayor who refers to Suebsaeng as “Mr. Swin.” The trio get into how Giuliani’s wild, at times seemingly flailing public defenses of the president are merely an extension of Giuliani’s client and Team Trump as a whole, and how Trump’s lawyers essentially try to confuse the media into submission. The host and his guests delve into how Trump’s West Wing has long been anesthetized to this kind of chronic disarray and “noise”—as have, sadly, many of the correspondents covering it. And Markay, campaign finance and corruption expert, breaks down exactly why Team Trump’s excuse-making for the president in Michael Cohen and AMI’s ongoing legal sagas might actually not be as batshit insane as they at first sound. And, of course, we end with a game: Can you tell the difference between a fake Giuliani quote and a real one? Take our quiz (and don’t forget to subscribe).
Can anyone actually manage an administration run by Donald Trump? That’s just one of the questions tackled on the latest episode of OMNISHAMBLES, in which Sam Stein, Erin Banco and Asawin Suebsaeng break down another chaotic week in Washington. There were big staffing shakeups, Special Counsel sentencing memos, and detailed descriptions of just how much Paul Manafort lied to prosecutors. Swin gets into the blow by blow of John Kelly’s time as Chief of Staff in the White House, and how his removal is welcomed news among some at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and many outside of it. He also breaks down why Trump’s first choice as a replacement, Nick Ayers, refused to serve for a two year term, and whether anyone who does take the role will ever be good enough for the president. Erin jumps into a conversation about what’s still to come in the Mueller investigation, including revelations on how the infamous Trump Tower Moscow deal died. And Sam talks about the fabulous life of a D.C. media superstar—including managing his kid’s 4:48 AM wakeup time.
This week the Fife friends go local, with a special discussing some pressing Fife stories, after having a bit of a natter about the continuing Omnishambles that is Brexit! Co-host and Beast D.C. Bureau Chief Jackie Kucinich is joined this week by White House correspondent Asawin Suebsaeng and Will Sommer, The Beast’s senior bizarroworld reporter. The trio kicked off the show by discussing how President Donald Trump handles—or, more accurately, spectacularly fails to handle—the presidential duty of public mourning the dead, and how this bodes for this week's funeral services for George H.W. Bush. (Hint: famous people dying and Donald J. Trump do not mix well—just ask Aretha Franklin's loved ones...) They also go deep on far-right conspiracy theorist Jerome Corsi, the man who's found himself at the center of Robert Mueller's investigation who Trump used to affectionately call "Jerry." For one thing, did you know "Jerry" authored a trippy children's book about a dragon, a king, and a "wicked witch," long before the right-wing activist became a Trumpworld associate and a Mueller probe fixture? (Well, listen to, and read, Will to find out!)
President Trump is once again demanding cash to build his border wall. But does he really want it? Like, really? Immigration will dominate the conversation as Congress heads because into session for what promises to be one of the least lame, lame duck sessions in recent memory. The spark: a confrontation between U.S. Customs and Border Patrol and migrants at the border in Tijuana on Sunday afternoon escalated to a point where tear gas was shot into the crowd of migrants—including women and children. The president immediately used the incident to fuel his push for the wall—a refrain that will likely become deafening as the Dec. 7 deadline to fund the government looms closer. But there are indications that he’d rather fight over the wall than actually get the thing up.

This podcast contains audio first created as part of the Fergus 20 yr Anthology, covering the RFC omnishambles. It also has audio from Brendan and Mousa after the ICT thumping. When consuming my football it's always through the optics of Celtic. Even when reviewing the success or failure of Cathro at Hearts, McInnes at Aberdeen or Lennon at Hibs it's viewed through the spectrum of the impact on Celtic or Celtic people. It is with this in mind that I approach the anniversary of RFC Administration Day. They are no longer relevant to us except in one way. Until we get the myth that they somehow survived death, I will always celebrate and remind others of their demise.
This week Harry is joined by Hullbhoy to discuss the first New Glasgow Derby in the league. Harry regails a tale from his starring role on Sportsound but is then taken down a peg or two by being reminded that St ANthony was in the New York Times. After this bit of banter the bhoys get get down to brass tacks and review what the team for the New Derby will be before Harry grans a bit of audio from the archives and plays and Omnishables Special There is new music as usual (links on the site) no new podcast recommendations (as Harry needs to get himself organised) and of course the Foundation. Enjoy.

Mock the Week host Dara Ó Briain chats with Pat Leahy about the mood in the UK after Brexit and the bitter nature of public discourse there. Later in the show Fiach Kelly and Sarah Bardon of The Irish Times discuss a week of controversy in Dáil Eireann over abortion, water and cabinet cooperation.
It had to happen sometime, and it's taken 91 episodes, but this is possibly the most shambolic podcast ever committed to the Internet. And for us, that's saying something. Owen manages to confuse two very different TV programmes, Steve doesn't watch the one film he was meant to, and while trying to make a very important point James manages to forget the name of a film, the actress in it, and what she said. It's not a complete bust of an episode though, and there are reviews of the Carrie remake, Palm d'Or winner Blue is the Warmest Colour, and Parkland. James also talks about the best and the worst films he's seen so far this year.
Mike and Nathan discuss Gaza, opium, Murdoch, Google, greenhouse gases, dogs, cornfields, lexicographers, Galapagos, minks, mortgages, Elizabeth Warren, Curiosity, Hostess and, of course, drones.
Adam Lindsay and Pete Armstrong discuss the BBC imploding, whether the Church of England’s rejection of women bishops makes them even more irrelevant in the modern world, and the Oxford English Dictionary’s word of the year. It’s all a bit of an omnishambles, really… Listen now!
