This remains my favorite episode, despite Samo's squeaky chair and some audio misses. We discuss ideas that have made a profound impact on my thinking, such as narrative hedging, the Bismarckian compromise, and energy leaps. This may sound like it was recorded last week with the insightful observations on energy and geopolitical conflict, but it was actually recorded nearly a year ago, at the end of April, and releasing in the middle of May.Samo Burja is the founder and president of the consulting company Bismarck Analysis, a Research Fellow at the Long Now Foundation and a Senior Research Fellow in Political Science at the Foresight Institute. He is also the writer of the Bismarck Brief newsletter, linked below. In this podcast, we discuss the life of Otto Von Bismarck, the political economy of institutions, narratives as a hedge against failure, the coming energy transition, differences between Europe and America, regulation as vengeance, live players, Elon Musk, and the global financial system.Bismarck Analysis:https://www.bismarckanalysis.com/#/Bismarck Brief: Samo Burja on Twitter:https://twitter.com/SamoBurjaThe Costs of European “Privacy” Regulation:https://www.nber.org/papers/w30028EU Artificial Intelligence law:https://www.technologyreview.com/2022/05/13/1052223/guide-ai-act-europe/Great founder theory:https://samoburja.com/great-founder-theory/ Get full access to From the New World at cactus.substack.com/subscribe

“Historians like to say, everything has a history. Recently, the history of animals, has seen some development. The history of dogs, living closely beside humans for millennia as guards, workers, hunting aids and companions, illustrates a relationship with nature over time and sheds light on how our species has understood our role on our planet as owners, custodians, or exploiters of the natural world, and it includes ambiguous friendships…” So begins today's story from Dr. Claudia Kreklau. For further reading:Parry, Tyler D., and Charlton W. In today's episode, Jason is going to talk to Alexandra MacQueen. She is a well-known financial author and co-conspirator of many different projects. Today Jason and Alexandra are going to zero in on a core issue of retirement for any generation.Episode Highlights:1.19: For the last few years, Alexandra has focused on providing quality content; this is the new word that people use now. 1.30: Jason says, basically, the retirement income question or making sure that you do not run out of money when you are retired. This sounds like a simple premise, but frankly it has been called by Bill Sharp, Nobel Prize winner, that is the dirtiest problem in finance. 1.40: We are dealing with a problem that is nothing but variables except for one constant, and that constant is that you need wealth to consume, says Jason.1.46: The variables are how long you live? what returns look like? what are you going to spend? and how does that expenditure vary? and then on top of that, what is the inflation? do we have to plan for it?2.28: In the list of variables tax always think about planning for retirement and specifically longevity. The other issue with longevity is that it is what we call multiple; it multiplies all the other risks, says Alexandra.3.31: Retirement is still a relatively new concept in western society. In the past most people worked until they were decrepit and died. And just to let further proof that, the first state-sponsored pension modern society was the Germans under Otto Von Bismarck, who basically set up pension date of 65 and was later move the 67. The pension was designed to basically pay you money when you were old so that there was no possible way that you could continue to contribute to society and continue to earn income. 4.20: Alexandra explains that when we talk about longevity, we actually lose a billion different number of billions? She says there are several different ways to measure it; there is life expectancy at birth. So, if somebody is born in 2021, they are expected to live well. 5.03 Alexandra says, “One of the things that you need to understand longevity is at what point are you measuring it?” She explains, If I look at life expectancy at age 65, you will notice it is five or six years longer. 7.03 Alexandra says we talk about life expectancy that is 50% probability but let us talk about how we are encouraged to use life expectancy? 08.17: Jason says we look at the impact of the decision if we are wrong. Do you want to die on your deathbed with more money in your account than you spent, or do you want to literally be worried about it prior to burning out on money?11.35 Jason predicts, if you were not a smoker, your gains and mortality are minuscule. However, if you were a smoker, a large percentage of the population than yours were increased. 12.54: Alexandra says that the numbers in tables are actually quite different from what we call population life tables, which is the life expectancy for the entire population. This includes people in poor health. So, as a rule, people who seek out retirement planning advice are people anticipate living long lives and who are positioned to live long lives they have money they have asked for seeking out advice.14.09: Jason talks about the various ways we can protect ourselves in longevity. So purely planning for that and preparing for that is important, but there are various tools we have to use for the planning. 14.25: Jason says that the downside to all these longevity gains has been that the timeline that we keep on planning keeps on getting longer and longer which basically means that - You need more and more capital to take care of it. 16.01 Alexandra suggests, “Your working career might only be 30 years. So just as a very basic math problem analysis - How am I saving and meeting my goals during my working life? How am I saving sufficiently to fund another 30 years? Doing nothing is actually fairly cheap compared to what we expect to do. 17.48: There are the old standbys of income annuity when you are transferring the risk to the insurance company in exchange for your one-way lump sum; they promised to repay you for as long as you're alive. 21.24: The generic advice is delay because it is the cheap guaranteed lifetime source of income. It's waiting for you when you turn it on, and that is amazing. It is just that it may not apply to the individual well. 24.54: The annuity is actually a solution through a better version. Because what we are talking about for the person align – “I should have taken CPP earlier, I would have had more to spend so they would have had more certainty of income.” That is what actually annuity provides. 27.15: Mortality credits is very simple; you put money in the pool. Alexandra says we can talk about it with PPP for example or any kind of longevity product that doesn't provide a large debt. She says, If “I die even before taking a single payment. What happens to my money? Well, I only get $2500 out, and the remainder is left, and the sponsors or supporters then withdraw the money by other means through what is called mortality credits.” 30.45 Jason recollects about a product called Guaranteed Minimum Drop Benefit Fund. Those guarantees were so rich they caused some problems for insurance companies. And to this day, I still have clients who have a bunch of those are paying out very high guarantee rates. 32.22 Jason says from a business owner standpoint, and this is very convoluted by the fact that we start throwing in holding companies and other structures into place. Then the tax implications of these products or the number of different ways we can hold these things increase substantially, so there's a lot of different options there.34.34: As per Jason, longevity planning is problematic. There are a lot of variables. There is a ton of decisions. 3 Key Points:If your returns are substandard, but your life is short, then there is a chance that inflation is high. But if you only live a few years in retirement, inflation doesn't have the chance to eat away at your retirement income or your savings.During the COVID pandemic, we have seen many newspaper articles about how average life expectancy has decreased. The layman understands what is meant when we say average life expectancy decreases because COVID is called period life expectancy. If the conditions that prevail now in this period continue, then life expectancy will be impacted. Now Canada Pension Plan (CPP) doesn't actually formally use mortality credits. That is a kind of insurance. But the underline concept is contributions go in, and not everybody will make it to average longevity, so those who die early their premiums are then spread among the remaining people in the pool, which is what we call mortality process. Tweetable Quotes:“Retirement is still a relatively new concept in Western Society.”- Jason“Life expectancy increases as you age.” - Alexandra“To say that the changes to mortality are going to stay our state permanent presumes that nothing changes now.” - Jason“The average information is absolutely useful in informing our decisions, but we all still look at the distribution and where you fall on that on the spectrum of various factors that affect you.” - Jason “Now the stakes are so much higher when the numbers that big, which is why a lot of people may make the wrong choice when it comes to pension commutations.” - JasonResources MentionedFacebook – Jason Pereira's FacebookLinkedIn – Jason Pereira's LinkedInWoodgate.com – SponsorLinkedIn – Jason Pereira's LinkedInAlexandra MacQueen: LinkedIn | Website Podcast EditingTranscript See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

PART 1: militarization of societyTracing back to Max Weber’s insights, Sennett talks about the “iron cage” of the militarized bureaucracy is mapped onto society by Otto Von Bismarck. This does 2 things: it gives everyone a place in society, so they won’t rebel, and it creates “rationalized time.” That is regimented time you can plan around, which develops agency for citizens. For the first time, you could plan for what should happen, instead of worrying about what might happen.Part 2: The Fresh PageThe “fresh page” theory is that as pyramidal, bureaucratic stability crumbles around us, this is not a return to a previous age, but instead a new page in history.Sennett maps out how in 1962, the Port Huron statement asked for the dissolution of large companies and social frameworks that held people in a rigid, iron grip. Part of that happened: we lost jobs that employ people for life and the ability to plan our life around stability as the corporations dismantled the structures that gave people a place in society and a future they could envision and narrate their lives around. These were not replaced with the communal, sympathetic negotiations and strong social structures, as the authors had envisioned.Instead, we have a “fresh page” where “relations” have been replaced with “transactions.”The characteristics of the unique individual who can survive on this fresh page are 1) people who can function in short-term time frames (with no long-term life narrative), 2) a person who can mine their talent for potential rather than becoming a craftsmen at one thing, and 3) they must surrender to their sense of self, over and over.On the ‘fresh page’ free from rules, many meet failure, and are left drifting alone.“Alone, they suddenly discovered time- the shapeless time, which before had exhilarated them, the absence of rules for how to proceed… Their fresh page was blank. In this limbo, isolated , without a life narrative, they discover failure.”Richard SennettPart 3: Social CapitalThe “iron cage” taught delayed gratification. Where people internalized their desire fulfillment to the extent that they could never arrive at fulfillment, and thus made the cage their home. The psychological trap became very rigid, producing drones and automatons, people who behaved like the machines they worked around.Sennett wishes that Max Weber had a little more insight into the military to realize this pyramid hierarchy has some built in features of personal autonomy through the negation and translation of messages: each level gets the chance to interpret the order to fit conditions on the ground.Feeling this sense of agency, to be able to “make a difference,” is an illusion that people need to proceed with an adult life.Part 4: CapitalWith the replacement of the local banker by a global merchant banker and the introduction of leveraged buyouts and hostile takeovers, the corporations themselves became the capital. This destabilized them as previous associations and processes were broken apart and loyalty (along with employees) was shed. This faster, more ambitious, more cut-throat organization served capital, not people, because investors with “impatient capital” wanted short-term rewards.institutional solidity became an investment negative… stability was a sign of weakness… the willingness to destabilize one’s own organization sent a positive signal.Richard SennettThis stripped down, de-layered version of the company was also changed by technology, such as e-mail communication. Now, instead of passing a command through managers (requiring interpretation and granting agency) a CEO could send an email directly and document their compliance… to the letter. So, email cut that layer out.As well, automation stripped a layer of the pyramid at the bottom. Now people have to outpace machines to keep their jobs. They no longer have a place in society. Which in Otto Von Bismarck’s bureaucratic pyramid is a failure: the whole reason it existed was to stabilize society by giving everyone a place and role.Today, the new workers are ashamed of dependency, and “worry about a loss of self-control.” We have reinvigorated and institutionalized the traumas of the unstable past, breaking community and social bonds, a sense of self, and communal history along the way.Part 5: MP3 PlayerSennett compares the new system to technology: the corporation acts as an MP3 player. The laser shines from the center, playing one track (function) at a time. The workers are hired, perform their function, then are discarded with no loyalty of consideration. Now the workers must self-govern and educate for a changing future, offering no stability. But the companies suffer as well without formal or informal trust: they have lost formerly institutionalized knowledge of what works and the adaptability of people with agency, often making hubristic mistakes.Leaders today no longer think critically of their employees, choosing instead to outsource anything painful smacking of responsibility of authority. They divorce power from authority, and hand it over to “consultants,” who know little about a company, and whose actual job is often not to be honest, but to shield leadership from the hard or dirty work.loyalty is dead90’s leadership guru

The name most associated with the unification of Germany is that of Otto von Bismarck. Bismarck was the great puppet master of Europe in the 1860s, but he may just have set things up for future conflagrations.

Grand homme d'État prussien, puis allemand. In this Whiz-bang, Cullen dives into the life and times of a true titan, Bismarck! From his early life to his meteoric rise as the virtual ruler of Germany, Otto regularly put on political masterclasses. Using a flare for the dramatic and brilliant diplomatic insight, Bismarck built the German Empire and eventually the fragile system of European treaty's that ensured peace - while he was in charge. His loud and public fall from grace with the young Wilhelm was stunning, moving the world ever closer to the inevitable World War to come. Also, this episode went on way longer than planned because Bismarck has way too many great quotes, and Cullen refused to skip any!

Part two of Colin's talk with author and historian G. J. Meyer goes deeper into the writing life. It's an honest discussion of how the business works and how success is fleeting and difficult to predict amid the "sorry state of the American publishing industry." Jerry is working on a novel, so he and Colin discuss the literary influences that have made Jerry want to write fiction. For him, those included The Paris Review, Cormac McCarthy, Flannery O'Connor, and Annie Poulx. They also find time to discuss Faulkner, Walker Percy, Robert Penn Warren, and how Otto Von Bismarck turned out to be a not-so-great subject to write about.
In the second episode of Podding Through Time, Jacob and Evan talk about even more great history topics, carrying on from last time:-What were Otto von Bismarck's policies regarding the relationship of the Prussian state to the Catholic Church?-When did agriculture first begin in New Guinea and which crops do we owe to their neolithic agricultural revolution?-What was the curious origin story of King Haakon IV of Norway, who brought the medieval kingdom to the height of its golden age?-What does the conclusion of the First Opium War have to do with the ongoing political situation in Hong Kong?-Who was Simo Häyhä and how does his record as a soldier and sniper compare to Lady Death from the last episode?
In this episode we look at how Otto Von Bismarck will use his Realpolitik ways to lead Germany to become the dominant power on the European continent and how he will use that power to maintain a balance of power.
In this episode we look at how Otto Von Bismarck of Prussia will use nationalism and warfare to unite Germany under the reign of Kaiser Wilhelm I.
Si quieres visitar mi cuartel general, ve a: www.consejofinanciero.com
Autorin: Brigitte Kohn
Politics is a messy business, even in the best of times, and especially in the worst of times. Many people console themselves with this reality by quoting Otto von Bismarck, the 19th century Prussian politician who, among other things, was the the first Chancellor of the German Empire (from 1871 to 1890). He was also a strong believer in realpolitik, the idea that realism and practicalities should outweigh ideology and emotion in political decisions. It’s not surprising, therefore, that he often quoted as saying, “Laws are like sausages. It is best not to see them being made.” The analysis implicit in that phrase certainly fits Bismarck’s political personality. But did he actually say it? Listen and learn!

Welcome everyone to the fourth episode of Ne Plus Ultra - Ideological Eras. In our second narrative episode, we explore how ideology came to play a prominent role in our society. As well, we ask the question if we can ever truly escape from a thirst for power and prestige as the main driving force for politics, to be replaced by a sense of what's just and moral? We briefly trace the history of ideology all the way from Ancient Rome, to Otto Von Bismarck, to our present day. Come and join me if you will, on a journey through the ideological eras. In the second segment of the podcast, we answer some fantastic questions about Donald Trump, Freedom of Speech, and talk about the rising tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran. It's another wild ride for the part of your brain that enjoys the finer things here on Ne Plus Ultra. Stay thinking my friends. -Spencer
Otto Von Bismarck or John Adams
In this episode, Noah and Samir explain how Otto von Bismarck creates the modern German state. As well, they offer an interesting idea of how he, perhaps inadvertently, lays the foundation for WWI.
“The Great questions of the day will not be settled by means of speeches and majority decisions but by blood and iron.” A Prussian noble by birth, Otto von Bismarck used political cunning a brute force to shake 19th century Europe to its core. Wholly committed to diplomacy at the point of a gun, Bismarck unified the disjointed states of the former Holy Roman Empire into a unified state known as the Second Reich. While he remains the picture of conservatism in the 21st century and a hero of the German people, questions remain about Bismarck’s motives; his achievements however are without equal. On this episode we discuss Otto von Bismarck, “The Iron Chancellor."

Philip Coggan, the Capital Markets Editor of The Economist joins us to talk about his special report on Pensions. Things have changed quite a bit since the first pension scheme was introduced by Otto Von Bismarck back in the 19th century. As people in developed countries are living longer, the pressure on the working population is mounting steadily to support the greying economies. In this podcast, Philip suggests different ways to tackle this problem by citing examples of governments which are doing it right and a few others which aren't.
Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the original Iron Chancellor, Otto Von Bismarck. One of Europe's leading statesmen in the 19th Century he is credited with unifying Germany under the military might of his home state of Prussia. An enthusiastic expansionist, Bismarck undertook a war against Denmark that has become a by-word for incomprehensible conflict. The British Prime Minister, Lord Palmerston, said: “The Schleswig-Holstein question is so complicated, only three men in Europe have ever understood it. One was Prince Albert, who is dead. The second was a German professor who became mad. I am the third and I have forgotten all about it.”After vanquishing Austria and France, Bismark led the new industrialising Germany, managing to remain in power for a further two decades. Bismarck said: “The art of statesmanship is to steer a course on the stream of time” and he founded one of Europe's first welfare states but he was also known for his ruthless tactics, ignoring democratic institutions, dabbling in dirty politics, leaking to the press and bribing journalists. Was the unification of Germany a carefully planned campaign or a series of unpredictable events that Bismarck made the most of? Did his encouragement of militaristic nationalism bear fruit in Nazi Germany, and what is his legacy today in contemporary Germany? With Richard J Evans, Professor of Modern History at the University of Cambridge; Christopher Clark, Reader in Modern European History at the University of Cambridge; and Katharine Lerman, Senior Lecturer in Modern European History at London Metropolitan University
