Ugly American Werewolf in London: Fleetwood Mac (1975)

By 1975, Fleetwood Mac had already had many iterations and lineups. Started by veterans of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, early Fleetwood Mac were a blues based band with limited success on the US Billboard chart. By 1975, they had lost their main singer, lead guitarist and main songwriter in Bob Welch and remaining members Christine McVie, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood were on the search for a spark. While working at Sunset Studios, they heard the debut album from a duo that was also a couple, Buckingham Nicks. Though at first they were interested in hiring on Lindsey Buckingham as their singer and guitarist, they soon found out that he would only join if they took his singer/songwriter girlfriend Stevie Nicks as well. The rest is pop/rock history as the 1975 product of the five piece, Fleetwood Mac, would go on to sell over 7 million copies in the US alone. Now with three lead singers/songwriters in the band, they could choose the best of the best for inclusion on the record. While the choices for singles didn't always make sense (Warm Ways was the 1st UK single, World Turning wasn't released as a single), the chemistry did and the world heard harmonies that were unknown before. While Christine McVie held her own with lilting love songs (Warm Ways, Over My Head, Say You Love Me), Lindsey Buckingham offered more upbeat rockers like Monday Morning and the brooding So Afraid. However, the real star in the making was Stevie Nicks who turned the album's and the band's fortunes with her all-time classic Rhiannon. It really introduced the world to Stevie Nicks and the power she possessed in her voice and songwriting. She also offered the sweet Landslide, another track on this album that would go on to be a rock radio staple and part of their live show. The success of Fleetwood Mac gave them the opportunity to release Rumours in 1977, an album that would sell over 40 million copies worldwide. But this album laid the groundwork for Rumours and all the future success for the band for the next 50 years. People who study such things say that the human brain—this folded lump of mostly fat—has a pretty good hard drive…the average adult brain has a capacity of about 2.5 petabytes…put another way, that's 2.5 million gigs…that's a lot. We're talking personal memories, facts, academic education, learned behaviors, and muscle memory…there are also special places where things like musical memories and lyrics are stored. Some memories remain rock solid, barring some kind of injury or illness…but because we're always experiencing new things, we forget other stuff as new experiences crowd out the old stuff. As a result, things fade…significant details about something can start to fade away within days—even hours or minutes, depending on circumstances surrounding that memory…some will become corrupted—which is why eyewitness accounts are often considered unreliable in court…and it's not like we can download a backup of our memories—at least not yet. This is why it's a good idea to a little maintenance on the hard drives in our head…and that can be as simple as doing a refresh…how?...but stopping for a little history…a quick study on where we've been, what we've done, and what's happened to us…think of it as pressing “F4” on a keyboard a bunch of times. John Lennon said “life is what happens when you're making other plans” …and the more time goes by, the more plans we might have made…inevitably, we forget some of life. And that's why if we want to know why things are the way they are—and where things may go in the future—we have to hit “F4” every once in a while. This is such a program…it's part ten of the 100 greatest rock moments of the millennium so far…how many of these things do you remember?...and have you even thought of them in this way?...let's find out with moments 10 through number 1. Their debut EP, Sweet Tennessee, was released in 2013, climbing to #2 on Billboard's Bluegrass Albums chart and the Top 15 on the Folk Albums chart. And the first full-length album, Kids These Days, debuted in the Top 5 on Billboard's Folk Albums chart. Expanding their sound, the band released Folk Hop n' Roll in 2015, landing in the Top 10 on Billboard's Heatseekers Albums chart and the Americana/Folk Albums chart. Later that year, the song “Take it All Back” hit the top of the Alternative Songs chart for three weeks and was later certified Platinum. The follow-up single, “Suit and Jacket,” was certified Gold. Judah & the Lion's third album, Pep Talks, hit the Top 20 on Billboard's Top 200, and the Top 5 on the Alternative Albums chart, while the singles “Over My Head” and “Why Did You Run” performed well on the Alternative Songs chart, earning them iHeart's Best New Alternative Artist award for 2018. Their most recent album is The Process, released in May of 2024. Built around the concept of the five stages of grief, the songs are Akers' exploration of his own mental health and life circumstances that find beauty, purpose, and even joy in the midst of the pain.

In the late 1980s, when hair metal was all the rage and grunge was just a whisper, King's X dropped "Gretchen Goes to Nebraska." Despite not hitting the mainstream heights of some of their peers, they seriously shook up our latest listener poll with this album. Today's episode of Dig Me Out dives into King's X's unique groove, which carved out a niche that straddled the worlds of their metal and alternative contemporaries.Dig Me Out is listener-powered. Suggest an album →We explore how King's X meshed with—and stood out from—the bands they toured with. Imagine sharing the stage with the heavy hitters like Anthrax, AC/DC, and even alt-rockers like Living Colour. King's X managed to hold their own with a sound that mixed deep, soulful harmonies and heavy, intricate riffs. This made them a band that other musicians admired, even if they flew under the radar for the larger public.“Gretchen Goes to Nebraska," showcased King's X's knack for blending Rush-like complexity with the emotional rawness that would soon define grunge. Bands like Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains owe a bit of their sound to the trails blazed by King's X, and we're here to tell you exactly how and why.Recorded with producer Sam Taylor in Houston and released on Megaforce Records, this album is a testament to King's X's technical chops and thoughtful lyrics. We'll break down tracks like "Over My Head" and "Summerland," discussing how they mix thoughtful musings with rock-solid beats, setting King's X apart from both the glam scene and the emerging grunge movement. We'll also ponder why King's X, despite their massive influence and critical nods, never quite became household names. Touring with an eclectic mix, from the theatrical Blue Öyster Cult to metal gods Iron Maiden, showed their range but perhaps left fans puzzled about where exactly to place them in the rock spectrum. So crank it up and join us on "Dig Me Out 80s Metal" as we dive into the fascinating world of King's X, exploring how they've left an indelible mark on the music scene, beloved by those in the know and just waiting to be rediscovered by new ears.Songs in this Episode* Intro - Out of the Silent Planet* 14:01 - We Were Born to Be Loved - CBS Orchestra* 28:47 - Over My Head* 32:36 - You're The Only One - Sneak Preview* 35:14 - Summerland* 37:13 - The Difference (In the Garden of St. Anne's On-the-Hill)* 38:23 - I'll Never Be The Same* 40:00 - Send a Message* 40:17 - Black Flag from King's X (1992)* 43:42 - Out of the Silent Planet* 48:30 - Over My Head* 52:26 - I'll Never Be the Same* 58:06 - This Picture - Jerry Gaskill* 1:02:00 - Take Me Away - Supershine* Outro - PleiadesYour Metal PicksAs we jam through the vast world of 80s metal, it's your insights and picks that fuel our episodes. Label: Reprise 1339Year: 1975Condition: M-Last Price: $15.00. Not currently available for sale. The single has a slightly different—and shorter—mix than the longer (3:38) LP cut. This was the tune that got the Fleetwood Mac hit machine rolling in the mid- to late-1970's. It's also perhaps my personal favorite cut from their first album in their revitalized configuration (with Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham added to the mix). Interesting to note that that album, simply called Fleetwood Mac, generated three Top 20 singles, but none that made the Top 10 in Billboard's Hot 100 chart: Over My Head (#20, released November 2005) Rhiannon (#11, released March 2006) Say You Love Me (#11, released July 2006) Note: This beautiful copy comes in a vintage Warner/Reprise Records factory sleeve. It has Mint labels and pristine sound.

Echosmith is a band that emerged from a certain strain of melodic new wave. They consist of Sydney (lead vocals/keyboard), Noah (vocals/bass), and Graham Sierota (drums). Their sound first peaked with the triple-platinum hit, “Cool Kids”. The track from their breakout RIAA gold debut album Talking Dreams notched a quarter-of-a-billion Spotify streams. At the same time, Sydney stood out as a positive cultural force whether acting as a brand ambassador for Coach, designing a line for Hollister, or dueting on stage with Taylor Swift. The sibling trio, who released their bold, synth-driven Top 20 Hot AC hit “Over My Head” in 2018, has earned critical acclaim from the likes of Billboard, Vulture, MTV, Elle, Rolling Stone, Teen Vogue, NYLON, and more. The band is now back with the release of their brand new single Lonely Generation. A bouncy alt-pop anthem, featuring a glistening neon beat, a sunny chant and acoustic guitar. Lead vocalist, Sydney recently joined us on air for Singapore Community Radio's latest interview session. On this episode of our advice segment, The Nature Fix, we respond to a question about fear. A listener called Over My Head writes to us about a terrifying whitewater rafting trip she went on with her husband two years ago. The experience left her so rattled that she has not set foot in a raft again. She wants to overcome her fear, in part because rafting is one of her husband's greatest passions — "so important it was in his wedding vows." Our advice columnists offer some tips on mitigating fears, and discuss whether you should try to make yourself love what your partner loves.

Diamonds has a tank, Fauna has been removed as a threat in as roundabout a way as possible, and now the heroes must plan a way of getting to Null. A typical week in Ashton; straight from danger into danger. But first, school beckons and exams loom.   Side Chatter PLAYERS Manda – Ryder Owen (King Rush). Small-time motocross champion with a lot of confidence issues. Turned his love for biking into a way to protect the people he loves and fulfill his need for speed. Matt – John Westfall (Giant Slayer). The frontman, singer, and rhythm guitarist of The Tall Summers, an alternative rock band that is also a vigilance group to boost brand recognition. Nate – Rose Brixby (Tankgirl). Outgoing and friendly girl who moved to Ashton from Prominence after a high-profile kidnapping case. She learned to fight and started buying low-impact supersoldier drug derivatives to make sure she would never be kidnapped again and that she could save others as she was saved. Travis – Metra Crowell (MegaGirl). Young girl local to the Ashton area. After losing her arm in a car accident she got mixed in with the wrong crowd, but took inspiration from the Spirits of Prominence and constructed a gas-powered prosthetic to help clean up the Ashton City streets. Zach – Ellhaym Tsukimono (Kageko). A teenage girl who enjoys exploring and finding secrets. A fairly recent transfer student, she’s only been around for a year or so. Charlie – Alexis (Spring-Heeled Jane). A former circus acrobat who was sent to foster care when it was revealed the circus was a front for organized crime.  She now employs her talents by stealing from criminals.   The post Ashton City Heroes Ep 30 – Over My Head appeared first on The Drunk and The Ugly.
