Episode 314. We pay tribute to the late director David Lynch by watching his 2001 film Mulholland Drive. An aspiring actress finds a mysterious amnesiac woman hiding in her new Hollywood apartment, sparking a close bond between the two women, and a search for truth and identity. We ask whether it's possible to spoil the ending of this inscrutable movie and discuss its origins as a failed TV pilot, clues that don't lead you anywhere, selves within selves, the symbology of the jewelry box, and how many times Patrick Fischler was cast in other movies as an homage to the Winkie's scene.Click here to watch a video of this episode. On January 15, the entertainment world lost a truly unique and highly influential talent….David Lynch (Blue Velvet, The Elephant Man, Twin Peaks) who passed away at the age of 78 from emphysema.  Over his illustrious career, he directed twelve feature films and was nominated for four Oscars including Best Director for this acclaimed classic released in the fall of 2001.  Considered by many fans and critics to be Lynch's best film, this mind-bending mystery has since garnered a devoted following from cinephiles who have enjoyed developing and sharing theories regarding its complex plot.  The overall story mainly focuses on two women, one an amnesiac nick-named Rita (Laura Harring) and the other an aspiring actress named Betty (Naomi Watts) who is new to town.  The town is Hollywood, where dreams of fame and fortune sometimes come true....though more often they lead to bad things. :o And as these two ladies develop a relationship.....well as most other Lynch stories go, let's just say that they get pretty strange.  Also included among the stellar cast are Justin Theroux, Jeanne Bates, Robert Forster, Brent Briscoe, Patrick Fischler, Dan Hedaya, and Billy Ray Cyrus. (Yes you read that right.)  Rest in Peace Mr. Lynch….your legacy will live on WELL beyond your time on this earth.  Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

This week on Fabulous Film and Friends we're covering a trio of Neo Noir films set in the city of…where else? Los Angeles, as we discuss 1998's The Big Lewbowski, directed by Joel and Ethan Coen and starring the extraordinary Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Julianne Moore, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, David Huddleston, John Tutturo, Ben Gazara, David Thewlis, Tara Reid, Peter Stormare, Leon Russom and Sam Elliot against 2014's Inherent Vice directed by Paul Thomas Anderson starring Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, Katherine Waterston, Benicio Del Toro, Reese Witherspoon, Martin Short, Jena Malone, Maya Rudolph Martin Donovan and Hong Chau, topped off with 2018's Under the Silver Lake  directed by  David Robert Mitchell  and  starring Andrew Garfield, Riley Keough, Topher Grace, Grace Van Patten,  Riki Lindhome, Wendy vanden Heuvel, Callie Hernandez, Jimmi Simpson, Zosia Mamet, Jeremy Bob, Rex Lynn, Patrick Fischler and Sydney Sweeney. My guests today are Roseanne Caputi and back by popular demand, Gordon Alex Robertson! Before contemplating the endless currents of depth and consciousness, man, the synopses:  The Big Lebowski,  follows a lot of ins-and-outs and what-have-you's of a very complicated case when two goons working for porn king Jackie Treehorn mistakenly burst into the apartment of Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski  demanding money that his supposed wife Bunny owes Jackie.  Realizing their mistake but still adding the flourish of urinating on the Dude's favorite rug, the pair leaves and gets the hang loose and tolerant Dude's dander up.  Dude the sets off finding the wealthy Jeffrey Lebowski that the pair were looking for and asks him for compensation for his soiled rug. The Big Lebowski flat out refuses the request, calls the Dude a bum, and kicks him out of his house. Surprisingly, a few days later The Big Lebowski summons The Dude to his mansion and asks him to act as a courier to a group of nihilists who have abducted his wife Bunny and are demanding a million dollars in ransom. With his reactionary ‘Nam vet bowling buddy Walter Sobchak at his side, the Dude enters a web of deception, greed and pain as he tries to make sense of the convoluted and problematical condition that he finds himself in.  Inherent Vice ups the ante with ex-cop and junkie P.I. Larry “Doc” Sportello who follows a trail of real estate fraud, heroin smuggling, corrupt federal agents and dentists when his ex-girlfriend Shasta Faye re-enters his life and gives him the tip that her current boyfriend, real estate tycoon Mickey Wolfman, has a wife who is trying to have him committed. With rival LA Police Lt. Detective Christian “Bigfoot” Bjornsen working alternately, with and against him, Doc plows into the labyrinthian case headfirst aided by only his wits and piles of weed and coke in the desperate quest for the truth.  Under the Silver Lake follows a journey through endless hidden messages, conspiracies and millennial self-discovery as perennial slacker Sam tries to uncover the truth regarding the disappearance of his beautiful neighbor Sarah, who vanishes without a trace a day after billionaire industrialist Jefferson Sevence is killed a car crash. Which film best exemplifies the whole L.A. thing? Find out!

Cenephile and severe weather head Jackson Boren joins us to discuss 'Twister', one of the biggest hits of 1996. It's a film that takes several well-worn, sometimes quaint, and seemingly disparate cinematic tropes and combines them into a transcendent and irreplicable experience. We discuss the rise and fall of filmmaker Jan de Bont, from his time as one of Paul Verhoeven and John McTiernan's key collaborators, to his work on back-to-back 90s action hits (this film and 1994's 'Speed'), to his gun-for-hire status for the 2003 'Tomb Raider' sequel that stands as his last film as director to date. Then, we talk about the film's host of influences, most notably its screwball comedy premise wrapped in a disaster movie's skin. Finally, we discuss the movie's groundbreaking special effects and champion the film as a state-of-the-art blockbuster spectacle.Follow Jackson on Twitter. Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman and this installment marks my 47th episode of "VideoFuzzy," my twice-monthly progress report on cataloging more than 2,800 VHS transfers and digital recordings. In this installment, titled "Podcasting in Plain Sight," I finally chat about "In Plain Sight" for my Friday Night Feature, a first-season episode featuring a somewhat cheesy '80s-style murder mystery plot centered at an art gallery, in which I draw connections between this show and "Burn Notice," another USA Networks production. In Cross Connections, I trace connections from "In Plain Sight" and from a rather eye-popping string of appearances by actor Patrick Fischler throughout my media collection. In the VHS-to-DVD transfers I talk about for my Classic Collection, touched off by a slug of episodes of "The Simpsons," I trace synchronous Bob Fosse references, off-putting late-series installments of "Monty Python's Flying Circus," and I trace connections through Spike TV's short run basic cable improv sitcom "The Factory." In my direct-to-DVD Current Collection, I zip through comments on "Supernatural," "A Discovery of Witches," "Superstore," "Brockmire," "Fosse Verdon," "Happy," and in movies, I added the FX presentations of M. Night Shyamalan's "Split" and Marvel's "X-Men Apocalypse," Dorothy L Sayers' "Haunted Honeymoon" (1940) and Agatha Christie's "Murder, She Said" (1961), and Mel Brooks' "Blazing Saddles" (1974). Also, all thoughts and strength to "Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek as he's fighting pancreatic cancer, and to friends and family of Tim Conway in the wake of his passing. In my Video Outreach segment, I sit down with friend and fellow podcaster Marc Bailey, also known as Grailwolf, and we share our thoughts and reactions Marvel's epic adventure "Avengers: Endgame" and comments on Joss Whedon. In Upcoming Shows, I highlight the third-season premiere of TNT's "Claws" on June 9, and FXX's 10th-season premiere "Archer 1999" on May 29, and Brian Greene's "Light Falls: Space, Time and an Obsession of Einstein" set for PBS also on May 29. Plus, the premiere of my Video Outtakes segment. Happy viewing!

From 2010: The first time Jimmy Barrett appeared in a second season episode of AMC’s Emmy Award-winning series “Mad Men,” was like a sock in the jaw. Who was this 1960s potato chip shilling, insult comedian? Why was he so rude all the time? And how dare he shake up ad man Don Draper’s world? Every time Barrett—played to crunchy perfection by actor Patrick Fischler—was in an episode, he turned the show upside-down and inside-out. So, of course, Draper slept with his wife!

Today's Guest: Lauren Bowles, actress, "True Blood"   Order 'True Blood: The Complete Fifth Season (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy),' available from Amazon.com by clicking on the DVD cover above! Could there be a better time to interview actress Lauren Bowles? In a career that’s been steadily on the upswing, she joined HBO’s bloody hot drama “True Blood” this season as the newest waitress at Merlotte’s. And the show’s three topline stars, Anna Paquin, Alexander Skarsgard and Stephen Moyer, appear naked on the cover of Rolling Stone this week, dripping in blood—fake blood, I assume, but it got the idea across. LAUREN BOWLES audio excerpt: "True Blood is a very lighthearted set compared to the world being depicted."  Lauren Bowles, star of HBO's 'True Blood' Besides True Blood, Lauren will appear in February in the next Farrelly Brothers movie, Hall Pass, with Owen Wilson and Christina Applegate. Today, the New York Times did a major story about New York fashion being overtaken by the influence of “Seinfeld” TV character Elaines Benes. What does that have to do with Lauren Bowles? Elaine was played by her sister, Julia Louis-Dreyfus. But she’s also married to the business: “Mad Men” fans will recognize her husband Patrick Fischler as foul-mouthed comedian Jimmy Barrett, whose wife Don Draper memorably shtupped. Patrick also did extended stints on “Lost” and “Southland” before landing a role in the Steve Carrell comedy, Dinner for Schmucks. How about that? I worked in “shtupped” and “schmucks” into a single paragraph! And on top of everything else, she’s a new mom, so let’s try to keep it down on the set and not wake the baby.
