It is with heavy hearts that we deliver this week's episode honoring the passing of a guitar hero giant who also happened to be an awesome singer and songwriter: John Sykes. He was a guitarist deserving of the title guitar god who rarely got mentioned in the same circles as the Satches, Vais, Rhodes, and Van Halens. Most known for his brief stint in Thin Lizzy at the end of their career and as a brief member of Whitesnake. He should have been a household for playing on the Whitesnake 87 album that sold 25M records worldwide, but he was fired before it came out. Kevin's a huge fan of Blue Murder, so we will focus on that band and some of the lesser-known projects he was involved in while also paying homage to his mainstream successes. New to InObscuria? Typically, what we do is exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Rest In Peace John. Your pure musicality and amazing songs will live forever in our hearts!Songs this week include:Blue Murder – “We All Fall Down” from Nothin' But Trouble (1993)Streetfighter – “She's No Angel” from Lightnin' To The Nations: NWOBHM 25th Anniversary Collection (2005)Tygers Of Pan Tang – “Blackjack” from Spellbound (1981)John Sykes – “Pride And Joy” from Crossfire: A Salute To Stevie Ray (1996)Derek Sherinian – “God Of War” from Mythology (2004)Thin Lizzy – “Cowboy Song” from One Night Only (2000)John Sykes – “Cautionary Warning” from 20th Century (1997)Blue Murder – “Still Of The Night” from Screaming Blue Murder: Dedicated To Phil Lynott (1994)Blue Murder – “Jelly Roll” from Screaming Blue Murder: Dedicated To Phil Lynott (1994)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uIf you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/

Rockshow episode 210 The Story of Phil Lynott and Thin LizzyPhilip Parris Lynott, born on August 20, 1949, in West Bromwich, England, and raised in Dublin, Ireland, was the charismatic frontman, bassist, and primary songwriter of Thin Lizzy—one of the most influential rock bands of the 1970s and early 80s. Known for his poetic lyrics, distinctive voice, and commanding stage presence, Lynott played a crucial role in shaping the band's signature sound, blending hard rock with Celtic influences and storytelling. The Formation of Thin Lizzy (1969-1972)Lynott formed Thin Lizzy in Dublin in 1969, along with drummer Brian Downey, guitarist Eric Bell, and organist Eric Wrixon (who left shortly after). The band was named after a character from a comic book (The Dandy's “Tin Lizzie”). They signed with Decca Records and released their self-titled debut album in 1971, but mainstream success eluded them at first.Their breakthrough came in 1972 with their reworking of the traditional Irish folk song “Whiskey in the Jar,” which became a major hit in Ireland and the UK. However, after their next few albums underperformed, Eric Bell left the band, leading to a major lineup change that would define their classic sound. The Classic Thin Lizzy Lineup (1974-1980)After Bell's departure, Thin Lizzy transitioned into a twin-guitar rock powerhouse. Lynott recruited Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson, forming the band's legendary dual-guitar attack. Their first major success in this era came with “The Boys Are Back in Town” (1976) from the Jailbreak album, which remains their most famous song.Notable Albums & Songs:•Jailbreak (1976) – “The Boys Are Back in Town,” “Jailbreak” •Johnny the Fox (1976) – “Don't Believe a Word” •Bad Reputation (1977) – “Dancing in the Moonlight,” “Bad Reputation”•Live and Dangerous (1978) – Regarded as one of the greatest live rock albums of all time•Black Rose: A Rock Legend (1979) – “Do Anything You Want To,” “Waiting for an Alibi,” “Black Rose”Thin Lizzy became known for their explosive live performances, poetic lyrics, and blending of hard rock with Irish storytelling. However, internal tensions, particularly with Brian Robertson's unreliability, led to lineup changes. The Later Years & Decline (1980-1983)Thin Lizzy disbanded in 1983 after a farewell tour, marking the end of an era.Phil Lynott's Solo Career & Tragic DeathAfter Thin Lizzy, Lynott pursued a solo career, releasing two albums:•Solo in Soho (1980) – “King's Call,” “Dear Miss Lonelyhearts”•The Philip Lynott Album (1982) He also collaborated with musicians like Gary Moore (“Out in the Fields”) and worked on various projects. However, his drug addiction worsened, and in late 1985, he collapsed due to complications from heroin and alcohol abuse.Phil Lynott passed away on January 4, 1986, at the age of 36.Thin Lizzy's LegacyDespite Lynott's passing, Thin Lizzy's influence remains strong. Various members have carried on the band's music, with Scott Gorham leading tribute tours. Lynott's lyrical storytelling, stage presence, and fusion of Celtic themes with hard rock inspired countless musicians, including Metallica, Iron Maiden, and U2.Today, Lynott is celebrated as Ireland's first great rock star, with statues, documentaries, and tributes keeping his legacy alive.Essential Listening for New Fans: Phil Lynott remains one of rock's most beloved and tragic figures—a poet, a rocker, and a legend whose music still resonates today.http://www.thinlizzy.org/phil.htmlhttps://youtube.com/@thinlizzyofficial?si=HtxqVIFF3_AuRiWrhttps://www.thinlizzyofficial.com/https://www.facebook.com/share/15serR1qV2/?mibextid=wwXIfrhttps://x.com/thinlizzy_?s=21&t=Mzw5de5zsR-SDDbhyzH0Lghttps://www.instagram.com/thinlizzy?igsh=bjE3aXRvdnhnMDVh#ThinLizzy #PhilLynott #RockLegends #ClassicRock #IrishRock #TheBoysAreBackInTown #Jailbreak #LiveAndDangerous #70sRock #HardRock #WhiskeyInTheJar #BlackRose #DancingInTheMoonlight #RockNRoll #LegendaryBands

Three of the four co-hosts are here this week with Super Marcey, Prof. Batch and Kollin, no Bede this episode because Baby Kraven tapped him out last week and he's probably also avoiding the nerds he's upset. Batch's pick kicks off a new month and he's chosen a movie that honestly could have been made specifically for this podcast with Hobo With A Shotgun (2011)! This is the second film for this show that came about from a fake trailer featured in Grindhouse, I guess that means if Thanksgiving (2023) hits Tubi it'll have to be done for this show. Anyways, enjoy this wild episode everyone!Hobo With A Shotgun was directed by Jason Eisener, it stars Rutger Hauer, Molly Dunsworth, Brian Downey, Gregory Smith, Robb Wells and Pasha Ebrahimi. If you have never listened to a commentary before and want to watch the film along with the podcast, here is how it works. You simply need to grab a copy of the film or load it up on Tubi (you may need alcohol), and sync up the podcast audio with the film. We will tell you when to press and you follow along, it is that easy! Because we have watched the films on Tubi, it is a free service and there are ads, however we will give a warning when it comes up, so you can pause the film and provide time stamps to keep in sync.Highlights include:* The belief is Bede is not here because he's avoiding Baby Kraven and the nerds!* Shout out to ONLYFANGS - currently on Indiegogo from the makers of Murdercise!* Kollin is in for a treat as he hasn't seen Hobo With A Shotgun before!* So Brian Downey as Drake is obviously a Best Supporting Actor nominee!* Can you tell this film was shot in Canada?!* Can you predict which moment from the Attitude Era gets referenced?!* That isn't hot gloryholes work!* Who laughed the most this episode? A story about a man down on his luck, a pedophile Santa Claus, a burning bus full of school children, and a shotgun. Listen in as me and my returning guest, Dan, talk through this hyper-violent and wickedly fun homage to grindhouse exploitation. Directed by Jason Eisener (The ABCs of Death, V/H/S/2) and written by John Davies (V/H/S/2), New York Magazine (Vulture) called the film an "unpretentious carnival of carnage" and the Globe and Mail said it was "a well-designed cinematic mess." I say that this film should be in the Library of Congress due to its deliciously juicy level of cartoonish violence. It tells the story of an unnamed Hobo (affectingly played by the late and great Rutger Hauer) who rides the rails into Hope Town, a once idillic hamlet that has since fallen under the control of psychopath extraordinaire The Drake and his douchebag demon sons Ivan and Slick (played respectively by Brian Downey, Nick Bateman, and Gregory Smith). Hobo tries to keep to himself as he witnesses a public execution, a pedophile Santa kidnapping children, a lowlife making a Bum Fights-style video, and various other nasty bits of business. After seeing Abby (Molly Dunsworth), a hooker with a heart of gold, get roughed up he intercedes which sets him on a path which finds him inexorably entangled with the scum of the city. With his trusty Remington 870 in hand the Hobo hero starts to dole out street justice one blast at a time. Dan may have been a bit shook by the rampant violence in this film, as many probably will be, but it really is rather comedic and entertaining with flashes of heart and sincerity. It's construction is pitch-perfect as it truly feels like it would hang with the best of the grindhouse sub-genre. The film is currently available on Magnolia Secrets via Amazon Prime, Crackle, and get it on Blu-ray.

As pride month comes to an end and the city celebrates everything queer in bright colors, we take a moment to look at how we got here and the future of pride in NYC. Pride from the early days looked very different from what it does today, from police brutality and the Stonewall Inn riots to, now, police officers walking in parades and corporations selling rainbow-colored everything. Some activists say that pride has become a corporate branded party, ignoring the struggles of the LGBTQ+ community. This week we will explore corporate involvement in pride and the frustration between LGBTQ NYPD officers and pride organizers. Sue Doster is the co-chair for NYC pride, and she tells us corporate involvement was almost nonexistent in the early days of pride. We'll also speak with Jay Walker, one of the founders of the reclaim pride Coalition. And lastly, we will hear from Brian Downey, the gay officers' action league president. This week we continue our in-depth exploration of the individual musical and life journeys that culminated in the creation of Night Demon.  We pick up the story in Ocean City, Maryland, where a chance meeting resulted in Dusty meeting Shane Mac. Together, the two of them formed New Liberty, an ass kicking riff rock band hellbent on living the '80s rock star dream.  After another chance meeting at a singer/songwriter event, New Liberty were invited to Ventura, California to record a demo. Still chasing their pipe dream, Dusty and his bandmates piled into an ancient, decrepit RV and moved cross-country. By chance, they were slated to record their demo with Armand in his studio. Armand and New Liberty hit it off famously, both musically and personally, and Armand joined the band soon after. In this new configuration, New Liberty developed a strong local following and played numerous searing gigs, many of which Jarvis attended as a fan. Meanwhile, Jarvis was pouring his musical energy into Jeff Hershey and the Heartbeats, exploring different musical terrain, lifting his musicianship out of a one-dimensional rut, and learning volumes about other styles of music, showmanship, and European tour life. Eventually, however, Jarvis began feeling that the Heartbeats project had run its course and was left feeling uninspired. At around the same time, New Liberty imploded when the shifting music industry climate conspired to prevent them from parlaying their homegrown success into something bigger. A perfect storm was brewing. The time was nigh for Night Demon. Become a subscriber today at nightdemon.net/subscriber. In New York and several other cities, parade organizers have said uniformed police officers may not march as a group.

THIN LIZZY Discussion - Ep352

We give a little Irish to you this week with our Thin Lizzy Discussion! Greg Troyan of the band Lipstick and podcast The Lipstick Panel joins us to cover the Thin Lizzy discography. Join us as we take you through each album, giving detailed stories about the production and songwriting. Additionally, we provide our thoughts on each album, picking our favorite songs. The Thin Lizzy history starts in 1971. Distributed by Decca Records and featuring the trio of Phil Lynott, Eric Bell, and Brian Downey, the first two albums, Thin Lizzy and Shades of a Blue Orphanage (1972), show a band struggling to find it's signature sound. However, there are several solid tracks on the first two albums. The original lineup ends its run on a high note with 1973's Vagabonds of the Western World. The classic Thin Lizzy lineup gets its start with 1974's Nightlife album. While new guitarists Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson display a bit of their future firepower on tracks like Sha La La and It's Only Money, the album is markedly mellow with such laid-back tracks as the title track, She Knows, and Frankie Carroll. 1975's Fighting album would see Thin Lizzy hone their sound into a tight, melodic hard rock. Tracks such as Fighting My Way Back, Suicide, and Freedom Song would show more edge while not losing melody. The ballad Wild One and moody Spirit Slips Away make Fighting a great album from front to back. Thin Lizzy would burst onto the world stage in 1976 with the release of Jailbreak. The title track and breakthrough single The Boys Are Back in Town propels the band to a much larger audience. Additionally, this strong effort is rounded out with such musical gems as Romeo and the Lonely Girl and Emerald. Thin Lizzy 1976 would see two releases from the band. Johnny the Fox, while not as successful as the previous album, boasts an impressive track list. Songs like Don't Believe a Word, Massacre, Old Flame, and Borderline would continue to show the diversity of song-craft from this band. Furthermore, Thin Lizzy would continue to impress in 1977 with the release of Bad Reputation. While marred with personnel issues during production, the album still delivers. Brian Robertson is in and out of the band during the making of this release, leaving Scott Gorham to handle the bulk of the guitar playing. Nevertheless, Bad Reputation is loaded with fantastic songs such as the title-track, Opium Trail, and the heartfelt Southbound. Thin Lizzy would document their awe-inspiring live sets with 1978's Live and Dangerous. Produced by Tony Visconti, the album would becomes a musical gateway drug for many aspiring rock musicians. Named by many as the greatest live rock album ever created, it is a blistering live document. Thin Lizzy Gary Moore, who had subbed previously over time for Brian Robertson, becomes a full member of Thin Lizzy in time for the next album. Black Rose: A Rock Legend is touted by many fans as the band's finest work. Songs such as Do Anything You Want to Do, Waiting for an Alibi, and Sarah do a great job of showing up the band's sense of melody and technical proficiency. Gary Moore's tenure doesn't last long and guitarist Snowy White is brought in for 1980's Chinatown album. Considered by some as a letdown in comparison to Black Rose, it still boasts some impressive songs such as the anthemic We Will Be Strong, Sweetheart, and Killer On the Loose. 1981's Renegade album is a divisive one among Thin Lizzy fans. The choices of keyboardist Darren Wharton and noted heavy metal producer Chris Tsangarides leaves some fans wondering if Thin Lizzy is abandoning their sound. While different, Renegade still has plenty of strong material including Leave This Town, No One Told Him, and the incredibly dark Angel of Death. Thin Lizzy releases their final album in 1983. Thunder and Lightning is a strong way to go out. Featuring the playing of John Sykes and, again, produced by Chris Tsangarides, the album is a ferocious final sonic document of a band that should have ruled the world. Songs like the title track, Cold Sweat, and The Holy War close out the Thin Lizzy canon with a bang.
