In the second special celebrity episode of Why Care? I am joined by the multi-talented, Double Olympic Champion, Dame Kelly Holmes. We dive deeper into her journey of self-discovery, personal experiences, and traumas, which she explores in her powerful memoir Unique. Kelly shares her emotional backstory in which she concealed her true identity and sexuality from the public and lived in fear for most of her life. We discuss the discriminatory military laws and systemic mistreatment of LGBTQ+ individuals in the British army, as well as the mental health impact. As a world-class athlete, Kelly opens up about the pressure to hide her sexuality, and how she overcame her fears and revealed her authentic self publicly. Kelly then shares her experiences attending a Pride event, becoming part of a supportive community, and about her LGBTQ+ advocacy work. At 18, Kelly pursued her dream to be an HGV driver and Physical Training Instructor in the British Army. In 1998, she was awarded a MBE for her services to the British Army and in 2018 became the first individual to be appointed Honorary Colonel to a regular unit. Meanwhile, Kelly also pursued her Olympic dream and was catapulted to fame in 2004 at the Athens Olympic Games for being the first woman ever in Great Britain to win two gold medals at the same games. She continued to raise the bar as an Olympic, Commonwealth, and European champion, achieving seven Gold, eight Silver, and four Bronze medals. She also won BBC Sports Personality of the Year and European Athlete of the Year. During the episode, Kelly shares her experiences of concealing her true identity and the fear she faced in revealing her sexuality to the public. She highlights the importance of education, understanding, acceptance, and authenticity regarding LGBTQ+ issues and the need to normalise attitudes toward the LGBTQ+ community. As Kelly recounts her extraordinary life story, she uncovers her experiences in the military, the traumatic military raids, and discriminatory laws targeting LGBTQ+ individuals. She then exposes the wider systemic discrimination in the military and the psychological traumas and mental health issues it caused, which she explored in her ITV documentary, Kelly Holmes: Being Me. As she developed her public persona as an international Olympic champion and world-class athlete, Kelly opens up about her fear of not being accepted for her sexuality and her anxiety about how this could impact her achievements. As she juggled her dual identity, she used defensive methods and was careful about how she projected herself to avoid judgment. Kelly then went on a journey of self-discovery, and at the age of 50, she finally accepted herself and came out about her sexuality. She embraced her true identity publicly the 2022 London Pride event, which was a powerful moment for her. Kelly acknowledges the pressures, challenges, and complexities of the coming out process, and uses her platform as an opportunity to combat stereotypes and to be an advocate for change. As a motivational speaker, Kelly shares how she connects with and inspires people through her personal experiences, but realises that her sexuality is just one aspect of her life. Now she has found happiness and inner peace, she focuses on her work and achievements and recognises the freedom of living authentically in a world where she can be proud to be herself, without the need for validation. Dame Kelly Holmes MBE is one of the most respected and recognisable athletes the UK has ever produced. Many will remember when she triumphed at the 2004 Olympics in Athens to bring home two gold medals, and scenes of sheer joy following her incredible achievement. Kelly has won an array of medals during her sporting career, making her an Olympic, Commonwealth and European Champion and she continues to hold British records in the 800m and 1000m. Undoubtedly, to reach such sporting heights Kelly needed to have a great deal of determination and discipline. In many ways, that discipline came from her military career, when she joined the British Army aged 18. Whilst serving, she became a HGV driver and then a Physical Training Instructor and in 1998 she was awarded an MBE for her services to the British Army. It was in 2018 that she was made Honorary Colonel of the Royal Armoured Corps. Despite all her sporting and military success though, Kelly was having to hide a very important part of her life. Before the year 2000, LGBTQ+ people were banned from serving in the British Armed Forces - a rule that existed even after homosexuality had been decriminalised in the UK in 1967. Those who were found out or assumed to be LGBTQ+ in the military, were ‘discharged with disgrace', losing all their medals and their pension. Living in fear that someone might find out that she's a gay woman, Kelly kept part of her life secret and only her closest friends and family knew her story. However this year, Kelly decided to let the world in. In a documentary on ITV called Kelly Holmes: Being Me, Kelly came out and discussed her struggle in telling people about who she is and her deep concerns about being found out in the military. Now she is working tirelessly to support ex-service people who may have been discharged from the military, just because they're LGBTQ+. The UK Government is currently gathering evidence from people who may have served up until 2000, for the LGBT Veterans Independent Review. The aim is for the government to understand, acknowledge and, where appropriate, address the impact the ban has had on veterans today, which Kelly is a massive champion of.Following her documentary, the ITV Embrace, Pride, and Women's Network came together to chat with Kelly about her story and how she has become so much more aware of her own intersectionality. The event which was held early in October, was also a celebration of Black History Month and a chance to find out how race has impacted on Kelly's life as well. The talk was also recorded as an episode for the ITV Pridecast and alongside Liam McConkey to host it was Simmone Gardiner, from the Women's Network and Sonny Hanley from the Embrace Network. Kelly Holmes's documentary, Kelly Holmes: Being Me, is still available to watch on the ITV Hub. More information on the LGBT Veterans Independent Review, can be found on the UK Government website.

I'm Dominic O'Sullivan a 15 year RAF Veteran who served as a Physical Training Instructor from the mid 80's. I have launched the pod to bring aspects of the transition process from the Military and some of the people who have made that transition work for them. There are many aspects to the transition process and we have started by focussing on those who served and their personal journey. Now we are in Series 2 highlighting the skills and traits of our Veterans, I want to introduce you to Mark Lane an 'Above Average Joe' and the journey that took him on a 37 year long service career and is now helping Veterans through his work with Active Plus in the charity sector. I'm Dominic O'Sullivan,an RAF Veteran who served for 15 yrs as a Physical Training Instructor and now works as a Consultant in the Health and Fitness sector. My transition from the Military was varied, and fruitful, but also with a lot of learning along the way. The toughest part was proving myself all over again and being able to promote myself to others, even now it's not natural to me . I hope this podcast shares some insights into the transition process for others and showcases what our Veteran family can offer. So grab a brew and hear about the 'Above Average Joe's' who have succesfully transitioned from a military to a successful second career. Hear their story, the insights, inspiration and humour that has made them successful. In this episode meet Alan Knell, following 9 years in the Royal Navy, Alan in his own words, didn't have a clear direction for the next chapter of his career, so took what was on offer initially. However, a desire to give back to the Armed Forces saw him volunteer to be a Co-ordinator for the Poppy Appeal in his area. That was the catalyst for a new and fulfilling path, that today, finds him working for the Firefighters Charity. His story and the work he is doing now, is so important that I have given him a refill on his NAAFI break brew. I hope you can find time to hear both episodes and recognise that success comes in many forms. Please help the Veteran Community and spread the word

Today on The Best Version of You podcast we are joined by Darren Hardy, a former British Army Officer and now the CEO of Fortitude Front . A leadership training company, which specialises in Mental Resilience. Darren Hardy was developed as a leader during his 15 years' Service in the British Army, where from joining as a Soldier in 2003, Darren stood out as a natural leader. As an athlete he became a Physical Training Instructor and it was from here he was selected to go through Officer training at the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. On completion of the 44 week arduous leadership course, Darren received the Queen's Commission and, as an Officer, took his troops all over the world, developing himself and others in a leadership capacity - often in life threatening and extremely testing environments. At the age of 31 Darren's career was brought to an end through suffering physical and mental injuries during the Iraq war. His PTSD was dormant and came about totally unexpectedly whilst dealing with a severely burnt casualty on exercise in Canada. On the road to recovery Darren had to focus on becoming mentally resilient to match his physical prowess and it is the fusion of the two (mental and physical) that sets Darren's leadership apart – he went on to become a Gold Medallist and record breaker representing Team UK in the Warrior Games 2018 in the 100m and 200m sprint. As Darren was focusing on his own recovery he was troubled to learn of the 71 Veteran suicides in 2018. Although Darren recovered successfully, the system was failing so many. Why were so many being failed? Where was the system letting people down? Darren's research identified that where this challenge was faced by the British Military, there was a greater, shared challenge for corporate industries. Darren created Fortitude Front to fill these gaps. His desire to change lives in all industries came from his own personal experiences overcoming physical and mental injuries through multiple coping strategies. Darren is a widely celebrated expert in Post-Traumatic Growth (PTG). Mission Statement: To CHANGE negative organisational cultures surrounding mental health and INSPIRE others to speak out by DEVELOPING leaders and communication strategy with partners in industry. To contact Darren about his fantastic leadership training company contact him via his website - www.fortitudefront.com and follow him on social media for daily inspiration and guidance!
I'm so delighted to welcome my first ever OLYMPIC ATHLETE onto the podcast this week. And not just any Olympic athlete, but double-gold medal winner, Kelly Holmes, who also just so happens to be my first DAME on How To Fail too. Dame Kelly joins me to talk about how her single mother was pressurised to give Kelly up for adoption as a baby and how she refused to do so, teaching her daughter about what it is to be truly strong. We also discuss Kelly's 'failure' at school and how she joined the army at 16 but then failed her first Physical Training Instructor selection (I mean, who would fail Kelly Holmes? Come on, now. Have you seen the size of her biceps?) She also talks openly about coming second in the 1995 World Championships because of her spiralling anxiety and discusses her ongoing mental health issues, including her diagnosis with clinical depression, her grief over her mother's death and [TW] her experiences of self-harm. For me, Dame Kelly epitomises the kind of empowerment that comes from being open about your own vulnerabilities. Her strength is forged through her resilience. As she puts it: 'You train for the outcome.' I know I use the word a lot in the context of this podcast, but Dame Kelly truly is inspiring in the most profound ways. Episode 06 - Ritchie Gibson - From Clinically Dead to Business Success This week I interviewed a former soldier, Physical Training Instructor, Business Owner, Entrepreneur and now a motivational speaker and best selling author of Be You, Be Great. Ritchie and I worked together in the Army and even deployed on active service together back in the 1990's. He is easily the most motivated individual that I know and has a never say die attitude. There are so many lessons from Ritchie in this podcast, I know for sure that you will love this episode. He was once pronounced dead after a car accident and yet still went on to achieve some amazing things. Bio: Ritchie Gibson grew up in housing commission and a working-class environment. His journey from inauspicious beginnings whilst witnessing alcohol and drug abuse and violence on a regular basis educated him not to be a victim of his circumstances and surroundings, but instead to learn from these crucial life lessons and to push himself to finding his passion in educating, inspiring, and motivating others. His presentations evoke the audience to look at themselves and realize that they have their own skill set – their own strong suit – and that they are more intelligent than they give themselves credit for. Ritchie is an inspirational leader, motivator and educator. The consistent message back from hundreds of global speaking events is that Ritchie will inspire your audience to feel more confident as a high-quality leader. Ritchie spent 12 years in the Australian Army winning awards and accreditations for outstanding service. He also received three military medals for active duty. He draws on his background and experiences to touch and empower his audience and is the reason why attendees are still talking about his talks several years down the track. The author of the top-selling motivational/self-help book entitled, Be You. Be Great. has propelled him into the international spotlight and become a valued contributor and confidant to numerous senior executives and industry leaders alike. Now based in Brisbane in Queensland, Australia, he travels the country providing motivational and goal-setting solutions to corporate businesses, industry leaders, sports stars, and anyone who wants to improve their performance and is in need of motivation.
