David teaches in the Institute of Pastoral Studies at Loyola University of Chicago, where he is currently an assistant professor of Christian spirituality. His previous faculty appointments were at Christian Brothers University in Memphis, where he also served as vice president of the faculty assembly and as the school's special liaison to the Catholic Diocese of Memphis, and at American Baptist College in Nashville, where he served as chair of the department of theology and biblical studies. In 2020 he was elected President of the Society for Comparative Research in Iconic and Performative Texts (SCRIPT), an international scholarly association affiliated with the American Academy of Religion and Society of Biblical Literature. David received his Ph.D. in religion from Vanderbilt University, and he holds an M.A in religion from Vanderbilt, as well as an M.A. in theological studies from Columbia Theological Seminary. He lives with his family in Hyde Park, a neighborhood on the south side of Chicago.

Garrett McQueen is a bassoonist who has performed with orchestras across the country, including the Knoxville Symphony, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Today, Garrett works as a producer of digital and broadcast media, with content featured on the Public Radio Exchange (PRX) and local public radio stations across the country. In 2017, Current named McQueen a Black talent in public media “that you may not know, but should,” and in 2021 the New York Times noted his weekly podcast, TRILLOQUY, as "a standout" that's "required listening for industry leaders and listeners alike.” In addition to working as the Executive Producer and co-host of the TRILLOQUY podcast, Garrett works as an equity consultant, guest speaker, curator, and presenter at the intersection of race and "classical" music. He serves on the board of the American Composers Forum as the Equity Committee Chair and is on the leadership teams of the Black Opera Alliance, the Gateways Music Festival, and the International Society for Black Musicians.

We visited the PRX Podcast Garage in Boston, a space dedicated to podcast creation, production, and access for independent producers to learn, develop, record, their own podcast content. We had a conversation with Palace Shaw, Community Manager at PRX Podcast Garage, and a podcaster herself. This visit allowed us to know more about this fantastic project, that is celebrating its 3rd anniversary during August. The Public Radio Exchange (PRX), is expanding, and now is opening a new site in D.C.
Listening is the key to important and difficult conversations, according to Al Letson the current host of “Reveal,” the first hour-long public broadcasting show and podcast produced by the Center for Investigative Reporting and the Public Radio Exchange (PRX). He claims with the explosion of social media and cable news shows that Americans have lost the ability to listen to each other. We talk past one another instead of with one another. He also claims that sometimes the best way to deal with a confrontational conversation or hostile ideas being expressed is to just walk away. He feels that bitter arguments should not replace constructive conversation--but if they do—he does not engage. He does not give them space in his life. Letson equates true listening to an “act of love.” He claims that sometimes the most powerful thing that a person can do is “shut up and listen.” Letson has spent much of his career listening and talking, especially on his famous radio programs and podcasts. From 2008 to 2014, he was the host and executive producer of PRX’s State of the Re:Union podcast where Letson travelled across the country talking to a wide variety of people. He helped launch “Reveal” in 2015. Letson also has created and is co-host of his own podcast “Errthang” – a show that features storytelling, radio drama, and pop culture. Besides his active life in radio, Letson is a performance poet, playwright, writer, and actor. Currently, Letson also is writing for DC comics and he has produced two graphic novels. He recently visited Ohio University as part of the Challenging Dialogue Lecture Series created by President Dr. Duane Nellis.

This can incapacitate independent podcasters to a high degree. The US government funds the creation of podcasts by PRI as well as those of public radio stations all over the country. Taxes paid by the citizens go to public radio and have been going to public radio podcasts for a long time now. With the merger of PRI and PRX, they will be even more capable of outdoing independent podcasters by raising the competition bar even higher against these independent shows. Independent Podcasting at a Huge Disadvantage The new enterprise will have its headquarters at Boston, potentially reaching up to five million monthly users via 585 radio stations. This figure does not include the listeners who contribute to the sixty million monthly downloads of podcasts. PRI hosts the number one podcast in the United States. The reinforced support from the government itself will toss the chances of success for independent podcasters into the wood chipper. Our shot at reaching a wider audience will be close to none, all thanks to this attack orchestrated by the government and affiliated media companies.
