It is not often that you read a book that is both heartbreaking, infuriating, inspiring, eye-opening, and riveting. Nicholas Dawidoff's new book, The Other Side of Prospect, brilliantly uses the particular story of the Newhallville neighborhood of New Haven, Connecticut, and a young black man wrongly convicted of murder to tell the universal story of the violence, poverty, and injustice that exists in too many of our American cities. There is a reason Nicholas has been a finalist for the Pulitzer, a Guggenheim Fellow, and the recipient of a slew of other honors and fellowships. He wraps his compassion and journalistic devotion to research and details into a story that takes us into his grip, leaving us more informed, more understanding, and hopefully more committed to being part of a solution. As James Baldwin said, “If one wishes to know how justice is administered in a country, one does not question the policemen, the lawyers, the judges, or the protected members of the middle class. One goes to the unprotected.” The unprotected could not be in better, wiser hands than Nicholas Dawidoff. ________________________________ Nicholas Dawidoff is the critically acclaimed author of five books, including The Catcher Was a Spy and In the Country of a Country. He is a Pulitzer Prize finalist and has also been a Guggenheim, Berlin Prize, and Art for Justice Fellow. Roxanne Coady is owner of R.J. Julia, one of the leading independent booksellers in the United States, which—since 1990—has been a community resource not only for books, but for the exchange of ideas. In 1998, Coady founded Read To Grow, which provides books for newborns and children and encourages parents to read to their children from birth. RTG has distributed over 1.5 million books. King Charles and his wife Camilla, the Queen Consort, will take part in a procession bearing his late mother's coffin to St Giles' Cathedral in Scotland. Charles addressed lawmakers in Britain's Parliament, telling them: “I cannot but help feel the weight of history which surrounds us.” President Joe Biden has formally accepted an invitation to attend the state funeral service for Queen Elizabeth II. Ukraine has kept the counteroffensive momentum in its war against Russia going. It says it liberated one village after another amid a claim that in one region it had pushed the invaders back right up to the borders they came from. Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is extending a state of calamity declared by his predecessor more than two years ago to deal with continuing concerns over the coronavirus pandemic. The shutdown of Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant cuts the risk of a radiation disaster that has haunted the world. The last of the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia plant's six nuclear reactors was shut down Sunday because Russia's war in Ukraine had repeatedly cut reliable external power supplies. Americans remembered 9/11 with tear-choked tributes and pleas to “never forget,” 21 years after the deadliest terror attack on U.S. soil. Victims' relatives and dignitaries gathered Sunday at all three places where hijacked jets crashed on Sept. 11, 2001 — the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon and a Pennsylvania field. President Joe Biden told the Pentagon gathering that the U.S. would continue working to root out terrorists. Nearly two decades after his capture in Pakistan, the self-described mastermind of the Sept. 11 terror attacks is still in a legal limbo. Khalid Shaikh Mohammed and four other men accused of 9/11-related crimes continue to sit in a U.S. detention center in Guantanamo Bay. A majority of adults in the U.S. say health care is not handled well in the country. That's according to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. The poll reveals public satisfaction with the U.S. health care system is remarkably low, with fewer than half of Americans saying it's handled well in general. In Sunday's sports highlights, a teen won at the U.S. Open, while the Steelers and Saints pulled out week one wins late, and Albert Pujols moved closer to 700 home runs. The horror film “Barbarian” won the weekend as the late-summer doldrums at the box office continued. Sunday studio estimates say the debut film from director Zach Cregger brought in $10 million in North America to earn the No. 1 spot for Disney subsidiary 20th Century Studios. Coming in a distant second with $4.4 million was “Brahmāstra: Part One: Shiva,” an Indian, Hindi-language fantasy epic from Star Studios, another subsidiary of Disney. Older Hollywood fare, “Bullet Train” and “Top Gun: Maverick,” occupied the three and four spots. Planned Parenthood leaders from across the country met in California to discuss how to defend abortion rights. Their goal is to create a blueprint for protecting abortion rights now that the U.S. Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade. Georgia's Republican Party once relied on votes in Atlanta's close-in suburbs, but today the GOP increasingly relies on the mountains of north Georgia for its votes. An analysis by The Associated Press shows a 41-county region of north Georgia now has as many GOP voters as the core of metro Atlanta. Major League Baseball is ready to voluntarily accept the formation of a minor league union, a key step that will lead to collective bargaining and possibly a strike threat at the start of next season. The Major League Baseball Players Association launched the unionization drive on Aug. 28 and told MLB on Tuesday it had obtained signed authorization cards from the approximately 5,000 to 6,500 players with minor league contracts. —The Associated PressSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

If you're longing for some real music that you can feel in your heart, lyrics that speak to your soul, and a live performance with the power to blow the roof off the building, you can stop right here. If you're tired of all the staged choreography, blinding light shows, capes, costumes, lip-synching and auto-tunes that seem to have taken over live performances, you have found a place to rest, refresh, and renew. Welcome to the world of Laura Cheadle. Along with her Family Band, she has opened for some of the biggest names in the business and won numerous awards, including “Best Indie Jazz/Blues Band” at WXPN sponsored Tri-State Indie Music Awards. One of her original compositions was recently included in a popular TV show, and she participated in a Philadelphia Film project with a seamlessly acted feature role in the short film “Ether.”  Gifted with a voice powerful enough to shake rafters, and tender enough to navigate the entire range of the emotional scale, Laura Cheadle is a singer commanding more than just a listen or a look. Join me as I interview Kerry Loeb, the founder of Kerry Loeb Health Trainings (kerryloeb.com).  Kerry teaches a 9-session program (no worries, it's virtual) designed to help you release blocked energy and revitalize your body and mind.  He does all this by teaching you how to practice the art of self-massage (called Do-In, a form of Japanese energy massage).  If your "Qi" (the vital life force) is flowing, everything in your life flows.  If energy is not flowing freely in your body, the early symptoms of imbalance (fatigue, general feeling of malaise) start to manifest.  If these early signs are ignored, more serious health conditions can develop.  Kerry had the good fortune of spending over seven years with his primary teachers, Shizuko Yamamoto and Patrick McCarty, learning all aspects of holistic healing, primarily macrobiotics, self- massage and a form of partner massage - Shiatsu.  Shizuko is best known for developing a method of shiatsu called "barefoot shiatsu"; she would literally release energy blockages with her bare feet.  Like other committed macrobiotic teachers, she shared her pearls of wisdom with Kerry.  In this interview, Kerry responds to the following lessons learned:--Why do people make health their last priority?--How does a strong body and mind make it possible to transform less than optimum circumstances in your life?--How does nature serve as our guide toward healing and wholeness?  --Why are solutions to health conditions often simple, but not easy for individuals to implement in their lives?--When we have perfect health, why do you think it becomes natural for us to want to help others?--What do you think about Shizuko Yamamoto's statement, "The essence of shiatsu (substitute any healing modality) is love, which is infinitely available"?--Shizuko Yamamoto refers to "the reverberation of health," meaning when we change ourselves from within, we project more health and positivity into the world and contribute to creating a better world - your thoughts?--Your top-three list for individuals to kickstart their own reverberation of vital energy and optimum health into the world? If you want to kickstart your own precious health, join Kerry in one of his Kerry Loeb Health Trainings (kerryloeb.com).  His self-massage course is "A 9-day deep dive into a way to increase your vitality, strengthen your imminity and transform your overall health."  A priceless gift, for sure.  Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/search/top?q=Kerry%20Loeb%20Health%20Trainings

The Plastic People of the Universe were a group of underground Czech psych-rockers known more for their outlandish stage presence than for their songs. After the Communist invasion in 1968, however, they became a thorn in the side of the repressive regime for their subversive messages, not to mention some truly ingenious ways of defying the ban on live gigs. So the authorities decided to put the band on trial – an event that backfired spectacularly. Paul Wilson, a young Canadian swept up in the history of the Velvet Revolution when he became the group's singer, and Martin Machovec, a historian of the Prague underground, take us inside the courtroom at that crucial moment when a rock band inspired a nation to rise up and defeat totalitarianism

Racism, riots and political upheaval seemed to be spreading like wildfire in Britain in the 1980s. In that increasingly hostile environment, the ‘daytimers' – mostly south Asian teenagers who skipped school to attend daytime raves – began to mix their Punjabi roots with western influences, creating a new type of music: bhangra. And one song about a Birmingham street crystallised it all. This musical revolution is told to us by the people who lived it, who bought the cassettes and bunked off classes to attend the parties: academic Rajinder Dudrah, DJ Boy Chana and others whose story is of a collective musical voice that spoke back against hatred

In 1942, the city we now call St Petersburg had been under siege by Nazi troops for months. With hundreds of thousands starving to death and the prospect of victory looking bleak, Soviet leaders tried what might now seem an unlikely attempt to salvage morale: they commissioned Dmitri Shostakovich to compose a grand symphony. The jaw-dropping true story of how Shostakovich's seventh symphony was eventually performed is brought to life by Marina Frolova-Walker, a professor of music history at the University of Cambridge. The Russian music journalist and academic Artemy Troitsky goes on to recount how the triumph of the so-called Leningrad Symphony against all odds has today become a key part of Vladimir Putin's mythology for Russia

It was Ramy Essam's moment. In a remarkable communion with the crowd, his spine-tingling song, Irhal, became the rallying cry for an entire generation. And when the dictator Hosni Mubarak resigned, they couldn't believe their success – but nor could they predict what would happen next.
