Episode 177 features Chris Wren of Bridge Nine Records out of Beverly, Massachusetts. Chris has been putting out records in the DIY scene for over 25 years. In 1995 he started his Record label and has had a dozen releases on Billboard's Independent, Heatseekers, and Top 200 charts-all the while remaining firmly true to the original spirit from which the label started. Having grown up in Connecticut in the 90's, which was a hotspot for hardcore, Wrenn had his finger on the pulse of the underground music scene and wanted to find a way to help bands reach a larger audience. With over 300 releases to their credit so far, I'd say Chris has succeeded. He's also had some of the biggest names in hardcore on his roster including my personal favorite Agnostic Front. His business has survived almost 2 decades and recently opened a store front in their hometown. So I wanted to get him on the show to talk about. If you're listening in from the Boston area definitely go check it out. In our conversation we talked about the origins of the store, DIY culture, skateboarding, and some of the artists that Chris has worked with. So whether you are friends of fans of the Bridge Nine, I hope you enjoy the “behind the label” interview. I featured a Bridge Nine artist by the name of “Roll Call” at Chris's suggestion. They are an NYC hardcore band. Thanks for listening and supporting local music.  http://www.bridge9.com -- Podcast merch is available on Shopify. We had the pleasure of interviewing Matt Lowell of Lo Moon over Zoom video! Known for delivering enticing and atmospheric soundscapes comprising ethereal guitar work, yearning lyrics, and resonant synths, Lo Moon are an alternative pop/rock outfit based in Los Angeles, California. Made up of frontman Matt Lowell (guitar/vocals), Crisanta Baker (synth/bass/samples), Sam Stewart (guitar), and Sterling Laws (drums), the group first appeared on the scene in the latter half of 2016, although the project had been evolving for many years prior. Lo Moon's self-titled debut album appeared in 2018 and charted in the Top Five of Billboard's Heatseekers chart, and the band returned in 2022 with sophomore their full-length, A Modern Life. Around 2011, principal songwriter Lowell had begun planting the seeds of what would become the project's first single, "Loveless." The track went through many changes in terms of lyrics, sound, and length. During this time, Lowell relocated from his native New York to Los Angeles, where he encountered Baker and Stewart, and Lo Moon became a collaborative effort. With Baker and Stewart's talents and input, "Loveless" wound up being a seven-minute epic that sprawling and transcended light and dark, both lyrically and aurally. After putting out the song online, it began to garner widespread attention and praise from the likes of Beats 1 Music and frontman Dougy Mandagi. Many also began to draw comparisons to fellow atmospheric acts with weighted songwriting under their belt -- from and to the and. However, the band decided to hold back in delivering further material and let "Loveless" stand as the sole representation of their sound for quite some time. During this "hibernation period," the track's demo was eventually passed on to producer, and former guitarist. Impressed with the layered sound palette and the band's approach to the writing process, went on to help produce their debut album after they signed with. The activity was also rife outside of the studio, with the ensemble going on to open for, Muna, and, both in the U.S. and overseas. Lo Moon's eponymous debut full-length arrived in February 2018. The band's second single, "This Is It," charted in the Top Ten of Billboard's Adult Alternative Songs chart, and the album peaked at number four in the Heatseekers chart. Non-album single "For Me, It's You" appeared in 2018, and touring drummer Sterling Laws became a full-time bandmember later in the year. The band returned in 2021 with the single "Dream Never Dies," which made the Top 40 of the AAA chart. Lo Moon's second album, A Modern Life, appeared on in 2022. The band described the album as being about survival, and the struggle to find an identity. We want to hear from you! THE DOLLYROTS (Kelly Ogden) Interview - Punk Rock band

Jim and Mike Interview KELLY OGDEN from the Punk Band THE DOLLYROTS!   Jim has been a fan of the band since 2007 when they released their cover of "brand new key". We had a lot of fun talking to Kelly about the new album (Down the Rabbit Hole), her acting debut on CSI, playing with Bowling for Soup, being signed to blackheart records, traveling with kids, Rabbits, Todd Rundgren on a train ... and more! *********** ABOUT THE DOLLYROTS: The Dollyrots are a Los Angeles, California based pop punk band made up of Kelly Ogden (vocals/bass) and Luis Cabezas (guitar/vocals). Since their formation 18 years ago the husband and wife duo has played over a thousand shows in the US and Europe, shared the stage with many of their idols, and released six studio albums along with several EPs, singles, splits, and a live concert film. Their last 3 albums have peaked in the Top 20 of the Billboard Heatseeker's chart, earning heavy rotation on Sirius/XM radio and followed releases on Lookout Records & Joan Jett's Blackheart Records.  What started as a hobby for New College of Florida students (and childhood friends) Kelly Ogden (bass/vocals) and Luis Cabezas (guitar) became a career when Ogden and Cabezas decided to make their band, The Dollyrots, a full-time gig in 2001. The duo set off on a road trip to find a new home for the group and settled in Los Angeles in 2002; once there, the pair set about honing a pop-punk sound inspired by the Ramones, the Pixies, the Sex Pistols, Nirvana, and Green Day. Two years later, the band signed with Lookout!/Panic Button Records and released Eat My Heart Out. Following release of their debut the band appeared onscreen on CSI:NY performing two songs off the album. While playing the Vans Warped Tour in 2006 the band members met Joan Jett, who was so taken by the Dollyrots that she offered them a spot on her Blackheart Records label roster after hearing demos of their upcoming LP. The Dollyrots' second album Because I'm Awesome debuted on Blackheart in 2007. The album spawned several singles that made an impact on radio and appeared on film/TV (Easy A, Brave, The Vampire Diaries, Greek, Reaper.) A year later they recorded a version of Jett's song “Bad Reputation” for the soundtrack to the film Endless Bummer, followed up three years later with the slickly produced A Little Messed Up. The first single off this effort, “California Beach Boy”, was featured with a live performance by the band on The Price Is Right. The Dollyrots left Blackheart after that, releasing an EP on their own Arrested Youth label. For their next project, the group turned to crowd-funding site Kickstarter, launching a wildly successful campaign that yielded 2012's The Dollyrots. Working again with co-producer John Fields, the independently released set featured Ogden and Cabezas firmly in charge for the first time in their career as they played all the instruments (save for a few parts done by producer Fields) and had final say over all facets of the process. By this point the Dollyrots had gone through a number of different drummers and generally operated as duo with guest musicians in the studio and on their various tours. Their 2014 release, Barefoot and Pregnant, was recorded during Ogden's pregnancy and was subsequently followed by the birth of the couple's first child. The album fared well critically and reached number seven on Billboard's Heatseekers chart. The all-acoustic Love Songs, Werewolves, and Zombies was released digitally in 2013 to the band's PledgeMusic supporters, and received a public release the following year. The Dollyrots continued to successfully fund their projects via crowd-funding and in 2016, they released their first concert album, the ambitious, double-disc/DVD set Family Vacation: Live in Los Angeles. That same year also saw the release of the three-song EP Mama's Gonna Knock You Out. The end of the year saw them working on two new projects, another kid and their next album. The couple's baby girl was born in November and the John Fields-produced Whiplash Splash was released in early 2017. This was followed by a 7-inch single Get Radical, released on Little Steven Van Zandt's Wicked Cool Records. The band most recently released their album of B-Sides, Rarities and Covers entitled "DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE"   Be sure to visit their website at : www.thedollyrots.com for a ton of cool, unique items (we mention some in the interview) Jim and Mike Talk Music can be found on Podbean (host site), Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and almost anywhere you listen to podcasts.   You can also view a portion of the video interview with Kelly on YouTube (search Jim and MIke Talk Music to find our channel) ******** COPYRIGHT CLAIM: The songs "Just Like All The Rest", "Mermaid", "I Know How To Party", and "Jackie Chan" used with permission from Kelly Ogden. ******** Thank you for listening!

On today's quick episode, I wanted to mention that I'm on the Talking Records Podcast with Jed Dion. We do a deep dive discussion on the album "Act Your Age" by the band Homegrown. I had so much fun talking with Jed and it would mean a lot to me if you took a listen. He's got a great show and I've been a fan for a long time. Home Grown was a North American skapunk/pop punk band formed in 1994 in Orange County, California. They released three full-length albums and several EPs before disbanding in 2005. Their music is often characterized as pop punk, lyrically favoring humor and silly or satirical subjects. The band signed to major label Outpost Recordings and released its second album, Act Your Age, in 1998. It increased their popularity and they toured extensively in support of it. The album had peaked at #24 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart in 1998. During this era of the band, the song "We are Dumb" appeared on the soundtracks of movies Half Baked and Homegrown. Cone left the band shortly after and was replaced by Justin Poyser. This line-up released EP Phone Home in 1999, which included the punk version of aqua's barbie girl. Later that year they toured with the band Limbeck, with whom they recorded a split EP called Connection. In March 2000, the band embarked on a US tour with Amazing Crowns, Limbeck, Pilfers, and the Gadjits. Around this time, the band released a split EP with Limback, through Utility Records. After returning home, they began writing material for their next album. Following this, the band were scheduled to go on a tour of the UK, which was ultimately cancelled.[4] Later in the year, Home Grown experienced significant line-up changes. Herco was forced to leave the group in order to undergo surgery and rehabilitation for a brain tumor. Poyser also left, leaving the band without a second guitar player. Lohrbach and Tran recruited Darren Reynolds from the band Longfellow as the new drummer, and spent some time searching for a suitable second guitarist. In addition, their label Outpost closed down and the band was without a recording contract. Eventually the band decided to continue as a trio without a second guitarist, and signed to the independent label Drive-Thru Records. Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Kat Edmonson over Zoom video! Edmonson’s new album Dreamers Do is out now via Spinnerette Records.Dreamers Do reached the #1 spot on Billboard’s Traditional Jazz chart, and the album debuted #1 at iTunes Jazz, #2 Most Added at Jazzweek and was named Deezer’s Album of the Week upon release. The album combines mid-20th century Disney songs (from Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, Peter Pan, Pinocchio, Bedknobs on Broomsticks, Mary Poppins, Babes in Toyland), with familiar classics (“What A Wonderful World” as well as “All I Do is Dream of You” from Singin in the Rain), and features two new original songs from Edmonson (“Too Late to Dream” and “Someone’s In The House.”)“Dreamers Do takes place in a single night, from bedtime till morning. It's about our concepts around dreaming- all of the wonderful things and the fearful things, the things that keep us awake in the middle of the night,” Edmonson explains of the new album, “It's also about the quiet power of merely having a dream. There are interludes between the songs indicating different points in this nocturnal journey and if someone wants to listen to the entire record as an experience, it's available to them.”The LP follows the release of 2018’s Old Fashioned Gal, which Billboard calls “an intimate journey from doubt to resolve and implied triumph.” NPR Music raves the album is “a handsome showcase for her songwriting, which has grown ever more confident over the last decade,” while the Associated Press says the record “sounds like an alternate soundtrack to an Audrey Hepburn film.”In 2014 Edmonson released The Big Picture, which debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Heatseekers, #1 on Contemporary Jazz Chart, and #2 on Total Jazz Chart. Her 2015 performance on “CBS This Morning: Saturday” garnered the program’s highest rated viewership since 2006. Her 2012 LP Way Down Low was described by The New York Times as “fresh as a spring bouquet,” and her performances at WNYC’s Soundcheck and Daytrotter were included in “Best Live Performances” and “Best Sessions of 2012,” respectively. The Texas native began crafting her signature sound while performing in Austin’s local club circuit for years before releasing her debut LP Take To The Sky in 2009. In this episode, I talk to my long-time friend Rishi Bahl from the band Eternal Boy. Rishi and I had a blast catching up. Not only is he the front-man of the band Eternal Boy, but he's also a professor of marketing, as well as the founder of The Four Chord Music Festival and the founder of Four Chord Music. Four Chord Music has released records by Eternal Boy, Fortune Cove, and Harbor, just to name a few. We discuss what it's like being a professor and how marketing ties into the DIY ethos derived from playing in bands. Enjoy! Eternal Boy is an American pop punk band from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, which had been called The SpacePimps prior to 2017. The band consists of vocalist and lead guitar player, Rishi Bahl, bass guitar player, Joe Harbulak, and drummer, Andy Mayer. The group have released five full-length albums and have a touring history that includes years on the Vans Warped Tour, as well as touring in China and Japan. The debut Eternal Boy album, Awkward Phase, charted on five of the Billboard charts in 2017 (the Billboard 200, Heatseekers, Top Independent Albums, Top Rock Albums, and Top Vinyl Albums charts). In April 2021, Eternal Boy released their fifth overall album, Bad Days Are Over, which charted for 4 weeks in Billboard top 100 New Albums. We had the pleasure of interviewing Kevin Boutot of The Acacia Strain over Zoom video! Emerging in the early 2000s, the band found success in 2008 with their fourth full-length effort, Continent, which soared to the top of Billboard's U.S. Heatseekers chart. Subsequent efforts like Death Is the Only Mortal (2012), Coma Witch (2014), and the horror-themed semi-concept LP It Comes in Waves (2019) continued to snap necks in the metal community with brutal efficacy.Formed in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 2001, the group consisted of guitarists Chris Daniele, Daniel Daponde, and Daniel Laskiewitz, vocalist Vincent Bennett, bass player Karrie Whitfield, and drummer Ben Abert. They released their debut, ...And Life Is Very Long, in 2002, followed by 3750 on Prosthetic Records in 2004. After 3750, the band lost Abert (who was replaced by drummer Kevin Boutot) and Daniele, and gained bassist Seth Coleman (Whitfield departed in 2003). In 2006, the Acacia Strain returned with their third full-length album, Dead Walk, on Prosthetic; subsequently, Coleman was replaced by bassist Jack Strong. Released in 2008, Continent found the group operating as a foursome, following Daponde's departure, while 2010's Wormwood introduced melodic hooks into the venomous mix of breakdowns and skull-splitting howling. The live CD/DVD Most Known Unknown arrived the following year. The Acacia Strain signed to Rise Records in 2012, releasing Death Is the Only Mortal by year's end. Longtime member Laskiewitz left the band in 2013, and was replaced by Devin Shidaker and Rich Gomez, both of whom contributed guitar to the Acacia Strain's seventh full-length album, 2014's Coma Witch. In early 2017, the group issued "Bitter Pill," the first single from their eighth studio long-player, Gravebloom, which arrived later that June. In late 2019, the band released It Comes in Waves, a doomy, taut, and atmospheric seven-song set with single-word song titles that, when put together, construct the sentence "Our only sin was giving them names." The following year saw the Acacia Strain issue a series of pummeling 7" releases (A, C, E, D, Y) that went on to form (and spell) the full-length Slow Decay, which arrived that summer. We want to hear from you! Speaking of the Arts

Today is the first episode of a new mini series I will be doing where we will be featuring some of our artists during this time of quarantine. My first guest is Kat Edmonson and we actually had Kat on the show almost exactly 2 years ago so if you like what you hear today then please check out that interview which is episode 34 (http://www.speakingofthearts.com/episode34/). Today, I speak with Kat to learn about some of the unique things she is doing from home to stay creative and active as an artist. For example, Kat has created a new live show that she streams from her apartment in NYC every Sunday night at 7PM Eastern. You can tune into Facebook to catch that and you can also check out her new website http://www.kat.live where she is archiving each episode as well as other new content. Our conversation is wide ranging and covers a lot of topics and emotions that I would imagine many artists are going through right now so I hope everyone finds this helpful. On a side note, I wanted to update everyone who listened to our last episode with Brice Rosenbloom where we highlighted the Jazz Coalition Commission Fund (https://www.jazzcoalition.org/). As I record this, the fund has raised over $25,000 so thank you to everyone who is supporting it. More on Kat: Dreamers Do, Kat Edmonson’s 2020 record, explores the common human struggles around daring to dream, including a range of emotional and psychological consequences. The album begins with a promising invitation to settle in for the night and dream. Joy and magic are revealed before an eventual left turn is taken, and a wild night ensues. A question gets raised in Kat’s vulnerable original, “Too Late to Dream”: “Are the messages we receive as children about following our dreams relevant through adult life?” Self-despair is explored, however all doubts are ultimately laid to rest in a stunning duet with guitarist Bill Frisell on the song “Age Of Not Believing.” Dreamers Do follows the release of 2018’s Old Fashioned Gal, which Billboard calls “an intimate journey from doubt to resolve and implied triumph.” In 2014 Edmonson released The Big Picture, which debuted at 1 on Billboard’s Heatseekers, 1 on Contemporary Jazz Chart, and 2 on Total Jazz Chart. She went on to tour worldwide with high profile acts including Lyle Lovett, Chris Isaak, Gary Clark Jr., Shawn Colvin, Willie Nelson, Smokey Robinson, Nick Lowe and more.

Sacramento rapper Hobo Johnson had already released two albums of quirky, affable, pop-infused hip-hop when a live video for his song, "Peach Scone," went viral in 2018 as part of NPR's Tiny Desk Contest. Riding a wave of newfound recognition, he issued his third album, The Fall of Hobo Johnson, the following year. Johnson was born Frank Lopes in 1996. As a teen, he was kicked out of his family home and lived in his car for a time, adopting the nickname Hobo Johnson. While working at a pizza place, sleeping in his Toyota Corolla, and showering at a nearby gym, Lopes, just 19 at the time, developed his musical persona. He crafted songs with sincere themes about chasing love and relationships and dealing with everyday trials and failures. In 2015 he relocated to Oak Park, California and released debut album 1994 Toyota Corolla, followed in 2017 with The Rise of Hobo Johnson. In March 2018, along with a band of friends, Hobo Johnson released a video online for the song "Peach Scone," participating in NPR's Tiny Desk submissions contest. The video quickly went viral, collecting millions of views in a few short weeks. The online interest in the project shot The Rise of Hobo Johnson into the Billboard charts, and the album reached number 11 on the Heatseekers list. In June 2019, Johnson returned with the single "Typical Story" and embarked on an extensive North American tour that autumn in support of his third album, The Fall of Hobo Johnson.

This week it was time to "Welcome Back, Jim Gordon" to the Gotham City Police Department as we discuss Episode 13 of Gotham which aired in the UK on Monday 23rd March 2015. In this episode of Gotham Jim Gordon returns to the G.C.P.D. and carries on exactly where he left off before his demotion to Arkham Asylum. He starts an internal investigation among his fellow officers and detectives following a killing of a low-level and seemingly insignificant drug gang member. Oswald Cobblepott's dreams come true, for a moment as he takes ownership of Fish's old club; and we really get a taste of Gabe, Oswald's right-hand man, as he acts on a favour for Jim Gordon by The Penguin. Whilst at Wayne Manor Cat has some bad news for Master Bruce. We discuss our top five case points for Episode 13 of Gotham including the emergence of the right hand men (Butch Gilzean, Victor Zsasz and Harvey Bullock), the reshuffle of the gangster elements in Gotham, Jim Gordon's support group, Edward Nygma and Kristine Kringle's blossoming relationship and of course that final showdown in Fish Mooney's club. Feedback As was pointed out by Detective Dillon The Electocutioner/Jack Gruber really reminds us of some versions of Hugo Strange from the comics. HUGO STRANGE - JACK GRUBER We also had some great twitter feedback from Channel 5 viewers, listeners and some of the actors on Gotham during our live tweet of Gotham Welcome Back Jim Gordon including Zabrena Guevara, Erin Richards, Drew Powell, J.W. Cortez and Tom Calderone. The music at the end of this weeks episode is Hanni El Khatib's song Family from his album Heatseekers. This song was used in Fish Mooney's club in Welcome Back Jim Gordon when Oswald has had a bit too much champagne. Join us again next week as we discuss episode 14 of Gotham The Fearsome Dr. Crane. Directed by John Behring and written by John Stephens who also wrote The Baloonman and The Mask. We're excited to see the back story of one of our favourite Batman villains.
