Season 10 Ep. 48: On A Quick Note: I cannot believe that the 150-year old University of the Arts in Philadelphia is closed. Here am I referring a young mentee to the college and when I checked, it's closed.Such a staple university focusing on the arts closed abruptly in June 2024 and filed bankruptcy in September 2024. The university closed because its leaders lacked the vision and the passion that would create innovative strategies to sustain the school.First of all no one knows about the school, that's why they suffered from low enrollment, and they were not profitable because they lack the Innovation to create new programs by working with the local niche communities and businesses in Northern liberties Philadelphia that were becoming the fashion and arts capital of the Eastcoast; with young professional New Yorkers moving to Old City and Northern Liberties. Now The Eagles are are dominant team and the Sixers are contemplating building a huge new stadium in Center city. The university could've taken advantage of these opportunities. Their prowess in the arts would have been ideal in helping to:1. develop the area utilizing the school's artists and professors and2. developing programs with the city and the stadium developers that serve to develop artists and designers who'd contribute to the stadium and the transformation of the city into the 21st century.Re-open the school @PhiladelphiaGovAnd return Kilmar Abrego Garcia to the US. We can't pay El Salvador 6 million dollars to hold him for us then say due to international policies we cannot interfere in El Salvador and if they want to release they should. When Greyhound shuttered its 35-year-old bus station on Filbert Street in 2023, inter-city buses shifted to curbside service on the corner of Sixth and Market Streets. But that location had no bathrooms, places to sit, or shelter. So the city opened what was supposed to be a temporary location along Spring Garden Street near Front Street in Northern Liberties. But more than a year later, the temporary bus stop is still there, and business owners are fuming. They say passengers are constantly coming through their doors to use – and abuse – their bathrooms. They also have complaints about traffic safety, trash, and parking. Thoughts on where a permanent bus terminal should go? From Bethesda Project, Tina Pagotto, MSW, Chief Executive Officer, and Kharisma Goldston, Director of Shelter, discussed the non-profit, which celebrates its 45 year of service this year. Founded in 1979 as a one-time service project for women, the mission has grown to 11 sites throughout Center City Philadelphia for individual adults who are chronically homeless and struggle with severe and persistent mental illness, serious medical conditions and/or addiction receive food, shelter and referrals to much-needed services. Bethesda Project staff reach out to those most reluctant to enter shelter with tenacious, dignified care and help them transition to housing. These sites range from emergency shelter to safe haven provisions to supportive housing to independent living spaces. Tina discussed their three concentrations, emergency shelter for any individual who is in need of shelter, entry level housing for those experiencing chronic homelessness through mental illness, addiction or other causes, and supportive services to help maintain their housing. Once in shelter, Bethesda Project meets needs from clothing, medical attention, and meal services while connecting their guests with support programming. Kharisma discussed Bethesda Project’s Our Brothers' Place, run in conjunction with the City of Philadelphia and provides emergency shelter for 149 men and supportive services for an additional 50 daily. Individuals experiencing homelessness receive warm meals and social services, taking the first step in accessing housing in the community. She encourages everyone to keep the emergency shelter number ready – 215-232-1984 to help get the homeless off the street and into safety during the winter. They talked about the increasing numbers affected by homelessness in Philadelphia, causes include the affordable housing crisis - lack of inventory, high rent and low incomes, and the lack of adequate access to mental health and medical services. They ask our support, in cash, in volunteering and for in-kind donations. Their Young Professionals have a events and activities throughout the year including Trivia at Future Days Beer Co. in Northern Liberties on January 23, with $2 per beer is donated back to BP, and Bethesda itself will celebrate their 45th Anniversary Dinner at Daylesford Abbey with their Founder Abbot Domenic Rossi — Bethesda Project. Their annual festival was set to kick-off on March 22, 2020, but was postponed to the fall due to the global pandemic. Philadelphia Pride was subsequently postponed, and out of that, PrideFLIX was born. Rooted in its 26-year history, qFLIX proudly continues its tradition of sharing the stories of LGBTQ+ people. The virtual film festival will launch on Monday, June 1 2020, and promises a stellar line up of LGBTQ+ documentaries, feature films, short films, and web series. One of the highlights will be a screening is that of gay writer/director Mike Mosallam’s rom-com, “Breaking Fast.” The film stars out actor Haaz Sleiman as Mo, a heartbroken gay Muslim who meets — and eats with — Kal (Michael Cassidy) during Ramadan. Because the Holy Month forbids impure thoughts and activities, Mo is forced to practice self-control. Mosallam’s clever conceit allows Mo and Kal to fall in love as their relationship develops over numerous romantic meals and dates. Sleiman and Mosallam, who were to be honored for their work at the fest in March, have been invited to participate in a post-screening talkback via zoom on June 29 along with Seth Hauer, the film’s producer. Several of the films will include talkbacks with filmmakers and/or talent. In addition, PrideFLIX is planning a weekly moderated discussion of specific titles on Sunday nights in June to help foster a sense of community during this period of social distancing. Ticket prices will range from $7-$10 per viewing, with $1 of each viewing going towards local LGBTQ+ non-profits. There will also be an option to purchase a festival badge to view all the films. Visit https://www.qflixphilly.com/qflix-presents-prideflix-the-virtual-pride-film-festival/ 5) William Way LGBT Community Center Benefit Kick-Off Starts June 1, 2021 Sofitel Philadelphia at Rittenhouse Square 120 S. 17th St. Philadelphia, PA 19103 215-569-8300 Every year in June, Sofitel Philadelphia announces a year-round benefit for a local LGBTQ charity. The pain of suffering through the pandemic, the shifts in our relationship with technology, the immense amount of loss, the calls to action, and our strength to carry on as a community are all themes explored by artists of this show. During this long period of uncertainty, there were times we found comfort in the care of others, through loved ones, and through members of our communities. We’ve seen the artistic landscape change completely, with in-person shows adjusting, shifting to online formats, and many artists spending more time at home, embracing new mediums. There is no singular way to describe this past year’s traumatic experience just as there is no singular way to depict or process such events. It is together as a community that we can begin to rebuild and maintain a renewed sense of hope. SOMETHING came from Baltimore the Podcast" is now has it's own show called, "Something came from Baltimore THE SHOW!" You can hear the show on exclusively on "TheBocX.com" Thursday's at 7:00pm EST. I recommend that you check out this radio station, it has a sound that I really love. There is something special going on. I am a big fan of Joey DeFrancesco I used to watch him when he was a young guy in Philadelphia with his Dad at the Orltibz Jazzhaus. It was in Northern Liberties which was totally run down at the time and down right scary, but you would hear the music a block away and when you opened the doors, there really was not a stage, but the band was basically in your face it was a long room and you had to walk around the band to get to a seat. Papa John and Joey D had duel Hammond B, it was pretty awesome. What did not make the interview was that I saw Joey in a Soul Food Restaurant in Atlantic City and he said that was one of the worst sets up ever and they still talk about it. It was a mess, I paid $25 to sit behind the band. "In the Key of the Universe" was my favorite album of 2019, I will always be a fan of Joey D's. I had radio show at Morgan State Radio 88.1 FM, Baltimore MD, called, "Jazz 101". "Jazz 101" had interviews with musicians to explain why jazz is so special. "Just be your authentic self. That’s the biggest advice I would give. At the end of the day, if you can accept yourself and know who you are, that’s going to take you further than trying to fit in." - Meleki Wamalume Meleki Wamalume (@iammeleki) is a wellness coordinator at Drexel University and fitness coach at F-45 Northern Liberties. Meleki was born and raised in Zambia, and was forced to grow up quickly because of the challenges he faced. However, through and from those challenges, he evolved into one of the most self-reliant and (authentic/self-aware) people we know. In this week’s episode, he shares the story of his American immigration process, his struggles accepting an African identity, as well as the powerful idea of curing loneliness through deep self-exploration and self-acceptance. We also discuss a wide range of topics including, the unifying role of sports, the subjective nature of trauma, the transformational power of vulnerability, and much more. We’d really appreciate it if you could leave us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts, as it really helps the podcast grow. We hope you enjoy this episode of Discover More, with us and Meleki Wamalume. Thank you.

In Episode 11 Paige and Ryan give a recap on the past 3 episodes: Hudson Table with Allen Bari located in Northern Liberties. You can follow them on Instagram Punch Buggy Brewing Co with John Riley and Rob Clark. Follow them on Instagram Tula Yoga Studio with Carly and Jenn. The Yoga Studio is located in Northern Liberties and they are offering virtual classes. In the last part of the episode Paige and Ryan do a quick 6 pack of questions where they discuss long term and short term goals for Tails and Ales and the Behind the Leash podcast. It is during this segment that we ask for some feedback and ideas related to inclusive community spaces for dogs and humans. Individuals in the Philly community have shared their stories about experiencing racism within the dog community, specifically at dog parks. I have received private messages myself after sharing articles and posts specific to the the Philadelphia dog world. To the protesters, the leaders, the citizens of Philadelphia and the Black Lives Matter Movement: Your voices are strong and you have tremendous support from the city. For the past 3-4 weeks Ryan and I have been taking the time to educate ourselves and listen. There is injustice that is rooted within our country and cities and across the globe. Discrimination and racism is experienced everyday. Black. Lives. Matter. And there is no place for hate. To see change we have to continue to do the work. There isn't a quick fix for the work that is being done. The battle might be uphill, but the climb is necessary and mandatory if we want to truly be the land of the free and the home of the brave. If you own a dog in the Philadelphia area, specifically the Brewerytown and Fairmount area and you feel comfortable DMing or emailing Tails and Ales, we want to hear your feedback on how the community can create this space- physical or virtual. This country as a whole needs to do better and we want to do what we can within our community without doing harm to the educators and leaders making strides toward reform and change. You can email Ryan and Paige at: tailsandalesphilly@gmail.com Follow us on Instagram Learn more about Tails and Ales on our Website
Carly and Jenn, co-owners of Tula Yoga Studio located in Northern Liberties, joined Paige and Ryan on the Behind the Leash Podcast. As community space owners, yogis and destined best friends, Carly and Jenn share their story of friendship, business and togetherness. Tula means balance, and Carly and Jenn offer a lot of balance when it comes to their classes and services. Although their classes have been moved to the virtual atmosphere, they still have created a space for inclusion via zoom. Members and class participants get the opportunity to talk virtually after class, together. In this episode Jenn touches on the importance of creating connection outside of your home right now. It's not the easiest, but we all need to find an outlet, like yoga, to let out some energy and unsure feelings related to the coronavirus. Carly and Jenn brought such a positive energy and light to the show, after listening, you are going to want them to be your best friend, too. It was such a pleasure getting to speak with them over nice cold beers and learning about their 4th Friday of the month happy hours….with beer! I know we can't wait for the day they can reopen and we can attend one of those…oh, and of course the yoga class, too! IMPORTANT: You will want to listen all the way to the end to hear what Ryan will be trying in the upcoming weeks. Seriously though, Carly and Jenn, we can't thank you enough for being on The Behind the Leash Podcast, we hope we can meet over a nice beer from Urban Village sometime in the near future. Punch Buggy Brewing Company is located at 1455 N American St, and borders Northern Liberties, Fishtown but is in the East Kensington area. After just a few short months, PBBC had quickly become “a local spot”. Opening in August 2019, Punch Buggy is just a few months shy of their 1 year anniversary. Ryan and Paige frequented Punch Buggy on the weekends and had seen their community grow, seen the immense support they receive and have had one too many beers, too. It was an absolute honor and pleasure to have John Riley and Rob Clark, two of the five founders and individuals involved in running the brewery on the Behind the Leash Podcast. Pat Coyne, the CEO of Punch Buggy was unable to make the podcast recording, but I wanted to make sure he was represented in the show notes. They have had such amazing success and I hope to see more of their wins in the future as we all overcome this pandemic and can eventually go back to a "new normal". Punch Buggy Brewery was named after Pat's orange punch buggy from college that he would deliver home brewed beer in... hence the name. To find out more about Punch Buggy you can: 1. Listen to the podcast 2. Read this blog post 3. Support them by ordering beer online and going to their pick-ups on Saturday between 12 and 4:30 4. Follow them on Instagram and Facebook
Allen Bari, Owner of Hudson Table in Northern Liberties, Philadelphia (with a location also in Hoboken, NJ), opened his doors just a little over a month before the pandemic caused mandatory shut downs. Being the quick thinking businessman that Bari is, he was already creating a sustainable business plan to get his business through the pandemic- Meal Kits. Hudson Table is an experience. It is a place you book with a group of people for a chef's night and/or cooking night out. With many different services, Hudson Table's main priority is creating a one of a kind experience with top chefs and delicious food. In this episode Allen Bari sits down with Paige & Ryan over a beer to talk business, COVID-19 and the background of Hudson Table. Being new to the Philadelphia area, Allen has already felt the huge sense of community in Northern Liberties, but if you are listening to this episode and are in the position to support local business, try Hudson Table. Meal kits are offered Friday, Saturday and Sunday and the menu rotates. Soon Hudson Table hopes to offer coffee and breakfast meals to go, too. Stay tuned by keeping an eye on their social media and website and when they do open coffee and breakfast sandwiches to go, Tails and Ales Philly will also post to their social media-- Ryan can't resist a good sandwich with bacon and Paige is a sucker for a good coffee and a morning stroll. LIMITED SOLUTIONS - these cases being solved are highly improbable - most unfortunately.Danielle Imbo and Richard Petrone were two people just hanging down at Abilenes on south street in Philadelphia (2005)- they walk to their truck and disappear into the night - FOREVER - what happened to them? The case of Amber Long and her mother, Stephanie is similar in that while Amber alone was the one who was killed, and there was an eyewitness (her mother) there's never been any other leads for this young Philadelphian architect. They were walking back to the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia when they came across two men who robbed them, shot Amber and took off into the night, in a car, never to be seen or identified. Finally, the strange and tragic mystery surrounding the murder of Su-Ya Kim, so devastating to the family, yet her murder has never been solved, even with an eye witness present. Also - info about south street read on this program was obtained through the Philadelphia online Encyclopedia.Follow these strange and unusual mysteries on another episode of the Right Shoe with Debbie Q.

What a great time I had with one of the owner/operators of Creep Records, Mark Tawney. We broadcasted live on facebook from Creep Stage. We covered everything from Art to egos in the art world. Marks love of art is what really inspired this multifunctional store. Creep Records began as a record label in 1993 and has since expanded to a retail space in the Piazza in Northern Liberties. The record store portion of our store is vinyl-focused. We also have CDs and cassettes. While many record stores focus mainly on used vinyl, our store maintains a true balance between new vinyl and a constant influx of quality used vinyl. Our selectection has genres ranging from indie and punk to metal and hip hop. Our focus has and always will be on bringing in great music to the store, whether its mainstream or underground, and our customers having a great record shopping experience. Stay tuned for an upcoming Comedy Fundraiser Show for #TuffysFight.
Wait, what? The Borgata is not in Philly. This is an outrage! However Ron made it to Northern Liberties for dinner at Jerry's Bar and a show at the Fillmore. Also, Gary Gulman was hilarious as always but was he as funny as the last time they saw him in Philly? Also Andrea blacked out so Ron helps fill in the fuzzy details.

AC Primetime w/ Mel Taylor. Atlantic City News, Info, Events.
Short Life for Dance Club The WAV nightclub is no more. The barely broken-in club on Atlantic City's Playground Pier has reportedly closed it's doors. The WAVac website is also offline. Opened with much fanfare in April 2016, WAV was supposed to be a magnet for 20-somethings. The slow-growing Playground Pier in front of Caesars Casino on the Boardwalk really needed that kind of traffic boost. The many bars, retailers and eateries inside the Playground would supposedly benefit from the hundreds that would shop, eat & drink before heading into the WAV for a night of dancing. LISTEN> ACprimetime Radio 7.6.2016 Playground Pier is the brainchild of Bart Blatstein and Tower Investments. Blatstein purchased the struggling 'Pier Shops' at Caesars for $2.7 mil in November of 2014. The deal was not a friendly one, which may explain why Caesars does nothing to encourage their guests to walk across the Boardwalk to enjoy Playground offerings. This bad Playground news dampens the excitement of Blatstein's new Showboat Hotel, opening on July 8. Observers noted: if Playground would clone Tropicana's 'The Quarter', they could have winner on that side of Atlantic City Boardwalk. ALSO CONFIRMED: the GUESS retail store has exited their Playground location. ( is Starbucks next?) Blatstein and Tower Investments is well known for the Piazza at Schmidt's project in Philadelphia's Northern Liberties section. After an exciting debut, The Piazza faltered and Bart sold out. According to Philly.com, Caesars and Blatstein had quite the legal tussle with this prime piece of Boardwalk Real Estate. Our 2 Cents: Dance clubs might be maxed out in Atlantic City. Plenty of competition in this space. Also, it's well known that poorly named 'Playground' was poorly marketed too. PR / advertising campaigns never connected with fun-seekers, and at times seemed non-existent. Still, that pier in front of Caesars is spectacular... it just needs proper management / creative leadership. Is Blatstein over-leveraged? That's what some are asking. With Bart on a buying spree in AC, does the Philly developer have the cash to properly manage his acquisitions? Will Blatstein have the time and resources to properly develop the volleyball court and Garden Pier parcels if those deals close? We look forward to Glenn Straub's next move with this situation. What do YOU think? Leave a comment below.
